Distracted Driver!

I am so very thankful to the kind man, lady & yellow lab in the red pickup truck towing a trailer in Hamlin! I was distracted—not from texting or talking on my cell, but mentally not focused on driving due to a recent death of a family member. I went through a stop sign & cut him off. He skillfully maneuvered his truck to avoid a collision. I apologized but want him to know how very thankful I was of his skill & kindness! I also want to make people aware of how we can become a “distracted” driver due to many circumstances. Please don’t drive if you physically or emotionally aren’t up to it. Some folks may be immunodeficient because of cancer, or chemotherapy, and perhaps other conditions as well. These people are still friendly & peaceful; and challenged. Hands may transmit any virus, as well as Covid-19, bacteria, fungus, etc. It is now cold & flu season; please cover your sneezes and coughs but ideally not with your hands. And wearing a mask is also mandatory for some of us.

It’s bad neighboring to leave your dog chained in the front yard all hours of the day to bark menacingly at everyone and everything, even at 6:45am! It’s also animal cruelty. The poor thing is NEVER walked, just plopped out there to suffer in the sun, rain or snow. Grow up!

Pulmonary Nodules Appear, Leading To Concern About CANCER DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman in what I thought was excellent health. On a recent coronary calcium CT scan that was ordered because of my age and slightly elevated cholesterol, an incidental finding was described in the report as “innumerable, tiny noncalcified pulmonary nodules bilaterally.” The largest of these is in the “left lower lobe with multiple additional 2- to 4-mm nodules,” and they recommended “clinical correlation and a consideration of a dedicated chest CT.” I found the report quite scary, especially considering my mother and grandfather died of lung cancer (although they were smokers and I never smoked). My primary physician has ordered the chest CT but wants to wait four weeks. She says that the nodules could be caused by inflammation or infection and might resolve on their own.

My fear is that they’re actually lung cancer and waiting four weeks might be problematic, not to mention extremely anxiety-producing. I would appreciate your input. -- M.S. ANSWER: I certainly understand why you are concerned about lung cancer given your family history, but primary lung cancer is very unlikely. Since there are so many of these tiny nodules, I agree with your doctor that these are highly unlikely to be lung cancer, which is generally only a single nodule.

Your doctor is correct that there are inflammatory and infectious conditions that can cause a similar appearance on a chest CT. Some of these infections are serious (including tuberculosis), but people generally have symptoms. So, I think this is unlikely. Exposure to lung toxins, especially silicosis and asbestosis, are generally occupational, but they are another potential cause.

Some cancers can spread to the lungs. While the appearance of nodules on a CT scan in a person with no known cancer would be unusual, if the CT scan in four weeks shows that the nodules are enlarging, then this would be concerning.

Getting another scan in less than four weeks might not be enough time to see a change.

I am sorry about the unavoidable anxiety in waiting for the scan, but it’s likely that the scan won’t show a change and you will be able to stop worrying.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was experiencing hoarseness while taking ibuprofen. A friend got intestinal bleeding due to taking it. My doctor gave me 7.5 mg of meloxicam daily, but I’m not sure it’s OK for long periods of time. I’m 73 with osteoarthritis and osteopenia.

I exercise daily and eat a healthy diet, and I have high blood pressure that is controlled with losartan and amlodipine. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: Ibuprofen is generally a safe drug, but it does have the potential for side effects -- some of them being serious.

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a serious one, and it is most common in older women. I would not try a second nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) like meloxicam in a person who has a history of serious bleeding with any other similar drug.

Hoarseness could be due to an allergy, due to direct irritation of ibuprofen on the throat, or from the worsening of acid reflux, which can cause hoarseness if acid gets all the way into the throat.

Meloxicam is also an NSAID but is chemically in a different class from ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil and others) or naproxen (Aleve and others), which are closely related. It’s reasonable to give it a try, but if it causes hoarseness again, then an NSAID probably isn’t a good choice for your arthritis. You could consider acetaminophen (Tylenol) or topical NSAIDs, which do not get absorbed enough to cause an increased bleeding risk.

The stockings, hung with utmost care, and the ornaments and candles, with all their flair, are now carefully packed away in boxes padded with extra care. The paper and bows, neatly arranged in their designated space, bring hopes that they won’t be misplaced.

Amidst the excitement of unwrapping gifts, some treasures we’ll keep, for their worth is deep. Though returns may loom ahead, the joy of food and cookies we’ve fed, now lingers as a satisfying belly ache.

As the jolly old Saint Nick peacefully slumbers, knowing his work is done, we can all relate. But when he awakes, it’s back to work again, spreading cheer without a break. Our merry and bright day off fades with the morning light, reminding us that a year of anticipation has just begun. As the year comes to a close, we look forward to a New Year to come, without feeling downhearted, as 355 days will swiftly fly by, unlike the endless days of childhood.

My cat, “Gerard,” is 6 years old and has become very overweight. I can barely pick him up! Since October, I have been working with Gerard’s veterinarian to manage his weight, and things are turning around. I hope that this year, readers will focus on their pets’ whole health. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.

Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy.

Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.

Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.

Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu.

Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.

Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit.

Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

PICKUP TRUCKS REMAIN POPULAR Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups.

A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America.

While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise.

According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars.

Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks.

A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer drivers of black pickups.

Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a host of factors as they begin looking for trucks.

Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be heavier.

As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for braking and do not tailgate.

Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice when changing lanes or making turns.

Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed to doing so in a truck.

Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and safety is not compromised.

Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in truck beds before driving in poor weather.

Eggnog Makes 4 servings 6 egg yolks 1⁄2 cup confectioner’s sugar 11⁄2 cups milk 3⁄4 cup light cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1⁄2 cup whiskey or rum 1⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg

One of the more notable aspects of the holiday season is the reemergence of foods and beverages that might not be enjoyed at any other point during the year. Eggnog certainly falls into the category. Though it might not be broken out after December, the following recipe for “Eggnog” from Lines+Angles makes a go-to holiday season beverage.

1. In a medium bowl, whisk egg yolks until light in color. Add confectioners’ sugar and whisk together until fluffy. Set aside.

2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine milk, cream and vanilla. Stir occasionally and gently heat for 5 minutes. Increase heat to medium and slowly bring mixture to a boil. Remove from heat.

3. Slowly incorporate milk mixture into eggs by adding a little at a time, whisking together constantly to avoid cooking the eggs. Continue to add the hot milk into the eggs and whisking until thoroughly combined.

4. Pour the combined mixture back into the saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick, without bringing to a boil, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

5. Allow mixture to cool for about an hour, then add to a jar with a tightfitting lid. Add whiskey or rum. Refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight.

6. When ready to serve, shake jar, add eggnog to serving glasses and top with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Avoiding Medicare fraud Medicare is a pot of gold for scammers. There is a lot of money to be made by those who successfully commit fraud against seniors.

You, however, can stop them in their tracks by not falling for the scams.

Here are just a few of the scams: Genetic testing is a hot topic for those who want to be screened for a variety of potential illnesses. If you get a call offering genetic testing (or even at a booth at a senior fair), don’t believe the scammer who says that Medicare will pay for it, and that all you need to do is provide your Medicare number. Never give that number out! The only legitimate way Medicare will pay for genetic testing is if your doctor thinks it’s medically necessary and orders it.

Even your medical provider shouldn’t be completely trusted.

When you receive your Medicare Summary Notice showing what was billed and what Medicare paid, look closely at it. Check the dates and services to be sure that you really did receive those services. While errors could be honest mistakes, maybe they’re not. Call your provider and ask them to send you an itemized bill so you can see how they came up with their numbers and to send a corrected bill to Medicare. If they don’t, or if you suspect fraud, report it. Call Medicare at 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227).

According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011.

The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

Gray and DiQuattro Commit to Collegiate Soccer on B-B Fall Signing Day B Y G R E T C H E N S P I T T L E R , B Y R O N - B E R G E N C S D C O M M U N I C AT I O N S P E C I A L I S T

Byron-Bergen seniors Grace DiQuattro and Mia Gray committed to play soccer at Felician University and the University of Florida respectively. During their time at Byron-Bergen, both athletes contributed toward five Section V Championships, four Regional Championships, and one State Championship. After finishing their senior season on the Byron-Bergen Girls Varsity Soccer team with another Section V brick and trip to the New York State tournament, the two athletes and teammates prepare for the next step in their academic and athletic careers.

DiQuattro posted 71 goals and 72 assists in her varsity career. She is a two-time Genesee Region All-Star, two-time Section V All-Star, and was named to both the All-Greater Rochester and All-State teams. Outside of sports, DiQuattro is Senior Class President and a member of Varsity Club.

After graduating in June, she will attend Felician University, where she plans to major in marketing and minor in sports management. She would like to thank her coaches Matt Waddington, Issac Kissi, and Wayne Hill, as well as her family for their continued and constant support throughout her athletic career.

“Grace is an awesome young lady and an extremely dedicated and hard-working athlete,” says ByronBergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “Her skill and poise on the field set her apart from the competition.

She is a tenacious competitor and does all that she can to help her team achieve its goals. She is a phenomenal teammate and is a great mentor and role model to younger players. It has been a pleasure watching her come through the program, and we will miss Grace on and off the pitch when she moves on to Felician University. They are getting a great one in Grace DiQuattro. I cannot wait to see what she does in the next portion of her soccer career and beyond!”

Gray posted 191 goals and 127 assists in her varsity career. She has been named Primetime Small School Player of the Year, NYS Class C Player of the Year, a five-time Genesee Player of the Year, six-time Genesee Region All-Star, and was named to the AllGreater Rochester Team and All State team five times.

Additionally, she was named Ohio Valley Conference Player three times in club soccer. In addition to soccer, Gray participated in basketball, track and field, and is a

member of Varsity Club. After graduating in December, Gray will attend the University of Florida, where she will explore options for courses of study. She would like to thank her parents, family, and coaches Wayne Hill, Issac Kissi, and Eric Dade.
