MAKING THE SWITCH TO EARLY-MORNING WORKOUT

Skip afternoon caffeine and evening alcohol. Getting up early to exercise will likely require an adjustment period. One way to make it easier to rise and shine a few hours earlier is to limit behaviors that can make it hard to get out of bed. Coffee and other caffeinated products can make it challenging to fall asleep at night if consumed too late in the day. Alcoholic beverages, while they may cause you to fall asleep faster, adversely affect sleep quality. When sleep is compromised, you may be more inclined to hit the snooze button.

ONE TIP TO TO UPDATE A RESUME TO ALIGN WITH THE MODERN JOB MARKET

Don’t forget the person who will read your resume. Though ATS software plays an integral role in modern hiring, eventually a human being will see the resume if it gets past the ATS portion of the vetting process. Before submitting a resume, read it several times to ensure it reflects your accomplishments, talents and aspirations and not just the keywords that will get the document seen by human eyeballs. Numerous resumes will get past the ATS software,so it’s imperative that the resume illustrates a candidate’s qualifications and talents.

I wrote a check to give to my child’s teacher. I don’t know whether it fell out of her pocket on the bike ride to school, in front of the school, in the school, or in the garbage with scrap paper as she thought it had, but thank you to whatever good human put it in my mailbox. It’s not a large sum of money, but anyone could’ve written cash and cashed it. Instead, it was put in my mailbox carefully. Thank you! We all need a little reminder that there are good people and this was mine for today.

E oy your breakfast

We were out to eat at a smaller, local restaurant for breakfast this past weekend when a large group coming in needed a few of the tables together. While they were in the process of moving things around a older couple came in to eat and was told they didn’t have a table to seat them. That’s when a younger couple sitting at a table in the middle offered up their available 2 seats to the older couple to all enjoy breakfast together. Truly a sweet sentiment.

Why is it that most gas pump handles don’t have the little hook that catches the handle so that the pump continues to fill your car without you having to hold the handle? Spring is finally upon us, but during the Winter months I actually seek out the pumps (and I know where they are) that have this handle hook! Once you have the handle ‘hooked,’ you can return to the warmth and safety of your car until your tank is full. So simple an idea ... and why do you need my zip code and bonus card number and want to know if I want a car wash... a waste of my time.

ere are good people out there! Bring back the kindness

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like basic kindness doesn’t exist around here anymore? I’ve noticed lately that so many parents seem to avoid eye contact, rarely say hello, or even acknowledge each other - and I’m genuinely curious why. No smiles, no ‘excuse me,’ no ‘thank you.’ It feels cold and honestly, it’s sad. I’m not posting this to point fingers or judge anyone - life is busy and we all have our moments. Our kids are watching. They see how we treat each other. But we can do better for each other and for our children. Have you felt this too? How can we help bring back a bit more kindness and warmth into our day-to-day interactions?

Caring for your pets in the warmer weather

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner. Can you please remind people that leaving pets in a hot car is a deadly mistake? -- Carol in Syracuse, New York

DEAR CAROL: Absolutely. Folks, even if the weather outside is just warm -- not hot -- the inside of your car can become extremely hot when it’s parked in the sun. Even with the windows cracked a bit, the temperature can still rise by 20, 30 and 40 degrees higher than the outside air temperature. So, if it’s a balmy 65 degrees outside, the interior of your car can reach 105 degrees or higher -- enough to cause heat injury or death for a pet.

That’s why 31 U.S. states now have laws banning pets in parked cars. It’s why police and even private citizens, in some areas, can smash a car window to save a pet. And it’s why pet owners who leave their animal in a parked car may face fines and, in some states, prison. Those laws do not make exceptions for cars that are left running to keep the air conditioning on. If the car stalls or has an automatic switch-off, the interior will heat up dramatically even on a cloudy day.

So, as we roll into the warm spring months, it’s important to have a plan for your pet if you need to take them along for the day. If they can’t come with you into the store or the salon, leave them safe at home.

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS

Set a realistic budget and expect to offer over asking price. A financial planner and/ or real estate professional can help first-time buyers determine how much they should be spending on a home. In the current market, buyers should know that they will likely need to pay more than asking price for a home. For example, the NAR reports that 28 percent of homes sold for above list price in October 2023. With that in mind, firsttime buyers may do well to look for homes that are under budget in anticipation of offering more than list price after seeing a property.

know more about this but can’t really find anything about it, except that it will eventually get worse if it’s not treated. I was checked twice in the past 15 years for asthma, and I wasn’t diagnosed. However, I’ve not been diagnosed with any acid reflux or postnasal drip. -- D.S.

ANSWER: Although most people think that asthma causes wheezing, cough is a very common symptom of asthma. You’ve named the two other most common causes of chronic cough: acid reflux and postnasal drip. It can be tricky to make these diagnoses.

Very often, primary care doctors will do a “therapeutic trial” that involves a short-term prescription to see if there is improvement. For acid reflux,it might be an H2 blocker like famotidine (Pepcid), which acts faster than a proton-pump inhibitor like omeprazole. This is often faster, easier, and much less expensive than a diagnostic test like a 24-hour pH monitor (the gold-standard diagnostic test). Similarly, a physician might give a trial of asthma medication (such as a bronchodilator like albuterol) to see if it stops the cough, rather than immediately testing a person’s pulmonary functionwithatrialofbronchodilators--astandarddiagnostic test for asthma. Sometimes a pulmonologist will order a “methacholine challenge test” where an airway irritant is given at very low doses to see if it will trigger an asthma response in the lung. Postnasal drip can sometimes be confirmed by a physical exam, but a fiberoptic laryngoscopy is seldom necessary to make the diagnosis. When therapeutic trials are not helpful, diagnostic tests become necessary. I personally order lung testing before and after bronchodilators on all patients with suspected asthma, as the tests give important information beyond a diagnosis. Lung testing can be used to follow the course of the disease and identify whether there may be a separate problem in addition to asthma.

Q.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old male. I exercise five days per week and eat healthy. I take losartan, simvastatin, Xarelto and metoprolol. I have gotten the COVID and flu shots yearly but still end up catching the flu. What gives? -- J.L.P.

ANSWER: I wish the flu shot was perfect, but it isn’t. Each year, the flu shot is usually around 30% to 50% effective at protecting people from getting the flu. Still, 50% protection is a lot better than no protection at all. Furthermore, if you do get the flu, people who have received the vaccine tend to have milder cases, which is very similar to the COVID vaccines. The flu is pretty contagious, so if you are in close contact with a lot of different people, you are likely to get exposed. You can reduce your risk of the flu (and COVID) by keeping away from large groups or wearing a mask, in addition to getting your yearly vaccine.

RAISE THE STAKE OF FAMILY GAME NIGHT

Gather for the right reasons. Game night should focus on having the entire family together laughing and competing in a good-natured way. It should not be a strict competition where winning is the only goal. Avoid the potential for sore losers who can sour game nights in a flash by letting everyone know that fun is the foremost priority of the night.

Few individual accomplishments in sports may be more coveted than sinking a hole-in-one on the golf course, but golfers from all walks of life may not want to hold their breath hoping to accomplish that feat the next time they hit the links. According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the odds of the average player making a hole-in-one are 12,500 to 1. Even professional golfers may want to temper their expectations of sinking a hole-in-one, as the Registry cites the odds of a pro accomplishing the feat as 3,000 to 1. Golfers who like to play in foursomes should know that their odds of sinking a hole-in-one if someone in their group has already done so are especially long.According to the Registry, the chances of two players from the same foursome sinking a hole-in-one are 17 million to 1.

RISK FACTOR FOR MOLD INFESTATION IN A HOME Outdoor drainage: Maintaining effective outdoor drainage is another way to prevent mold growth in a home. This typically requires maintaining gutters and drains so they do not become clogged during or after rainstorms. Gutter guards can prevent gutters and drains from clogging. Homeowners also may want to work with a landscaper or landscape architect to ensure soil around the house slopes away from the foundation, which can prevent water from pooling near the walls. When water pools near the walls, this can contribute to foundation problems and make it easier for mold to grow.

says most cataracts develop with age, as more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to remove them. But cataracts can occur for other reasons, such as after an eye injury or after surgery for another vision problem. The American Academy of Opthalmology says cataracts can make it seem like a person is looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Everything is hazy, blurry or less colorful. Additional vision changes associated with cataracts include extra light sensitivity; seeing bright colors as faded or yellowed; seeing double or a ghosted image; and difficulty seeing at night. Using brighter lights at home or getting a new eyeglasses prescription can help manage cataracts in their early stages. An eye doctor may suggest surgery if cataracts are getting in the way of daily activities. Surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a new, artificial lens.

DID YOU KNOW?

Drivers can thank the military for the introduction of sport utility vehicles to the mainstream market. Predecessors to modern SUVs date back to military models from the late 1930s, and four-wheel-drive station wagons and other vehicles that were introduced in the late 1940s. However, many car enthusiasts feel the 1984 Jeep Cherokee was the first SUV in the modern style. In 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that SUVs made up 44.67 percent of all light-duty vehicles produced that year, compared to 25.69 percent of market share for sedans and wagons. In fact, as of 2023, many major automakers had announced plans to phase out many of their popular sedans. General Motors dropped nearly all passenger cars from its North American portfolio. Dodge dropped the Challenger and Charger; Acura removed the ILX model; the Chrysler 300 is no more; and Nissan no longer offers the Maxima. These are just some of the effects of the popularity of SUVs and also part of a larger shift toward the production of electric vehicles.

PROBLEM AFFECTING THE WORLD’S OCEANS Deep-sea mining: Mining in the oceans involves dredging the bottom of the ocean and extracting minerals like manganese, nickel, cobalt, zinc, copper, and gold. Removing this level of the seabed can destroy habitats for coral, sponges and other marine life, says EcoWatch.

What is perimenopause? Some people incorrectly describe the years leading up to the last menstrual period as menopause. However, menopause only occurs after the last period has occurred. It is a finite date. The menopausal transition before that takes place is actually called perimenopuase. It is a period of time that most often begins between ages 45 and 55. The National Institute on Aging says perimenopause traditionally lasts seven years, but it can go on for as long as 14 years. The duration may depend on lifestyle factors, race and ethnicity. Duringperimenopause, productionof estrogenandprogesterone made in the ovaries varies greatly. That can mean menstruation can be heavy at times or light. It may occur once a month or even multiple times per month. The menopausal transition affects each woman differently. It is a good idea for women to use a menstruation tracker and remain aware of symptoms to discuss with the gynecologist.

RISK FACTOR FOR AFIB

Alcohol consumption: Binge drinking increases risk for AFib, according to the AHA. The organization defines binge drinking as five drinks in two hours for men and four drinks in two hours for women. If individuals want to consume alcohol, Johns Hopkins emphasizes the need for moderate consumption, which is defined as one drink or less per day for women or two drinks or fewer per day for men.

SIGNS

IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR

TIRES

Poor grip: Drivers may be able to feel certain tire problems, including poor grip, while driving. In such instances, tires may feel as though they are slipping. The tire experts at Firestone note that low tread can reduce tire traction and cause wheels to slip, which may be more noticeable when accelerating from a stop or driving on wet roads. Drivers who feel their tires are slipping can test the tread and replace tires that are low.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING REFRESHER COURSE

Driving affords people the freedom to travel wherever they desire so long as they have access to a reliable vehicle. However, soon after the “new car smell” of that freshly minted license wears off, motorists may realize that many roads can be chaotic and populated by erratic drivers. Defensive driving strategies can help any motorist feel safe on the road, and it can help anyone to revisit a defensive approach from time to time.

What is defensive driving? The insurance firm Progressive notes defensive drivers employ techniques that can reduce accident risk. These techniques promote alertness,a recognition among drivers of the significance of controlling what they can, and a commitment to always expect the unexpected. The crux of defensive driving is realizing not everyone else drives well. Aggressive drivers are hazards, as are those who are distracted behind the wheel. Driving defensively serves to mitigate some of these hazards.

All good kids like milk? There are various defensive driving techniques, and various driving schools or organizations may promote their own. Harold L. Smith was a World War II veteran who founded the Smith System® driving school in 1952. Smith felt that driving schools only taught how to mechanically operate vehicles, not how to drive safely to avoid accidents. Smith’s system uses the mnemonic “all good kids like milk,” which refers to:

But though his thought and talkwereallbookishandsmelt of the lamp, yet they were as racy with the elements of every-day life as they were flavored with the essence of all good literatures. The truth was, he lived two lives: one alone with his library, the other active in courts; the one led him in silence through the memorable thoughts and splendid epitaphs of the dead; the other in noise and confusion through the jealous heartsandsquabblingtongues and tedious narratives of the living. By both he educated himself...

Edward G. Parker, Reminiscences of Rufus Choate, The Great American Advocate,1860

• Aim high in steering®: Look ahead a minimum of 15 seconds to scan the road.At 60 miles per hour you want to look a quarter-mile ahead. This helps you make timely decisions.

• Get the big picture®: Keep a minimum following distance by picking a fixed object ahead and making sure you’re at least seven seconds away. In addition, scan mirrors every few seconds.

• Keep your eyes moving®: Avoid focusing on one object for more than a few seconds. Driving on autopilot or under “highway hypnosis” is dangerous.

• Leave yourself an out®: The “space cushion” terminology is something you may have heard. You always want to anticipate potential hazards and ensure a way to avoid them; otherwise, you may be forced to make a quick, and potentially dangerous, decision.

• Make sure they see you®: Drivers who can’t see you may make their own maneuvers thinking the coast is clear.Try to make eye contact with other drivers, use headlights, your horn, and signal your intentions.

Take a defensive driving course: You can follow the Smith method outlined here or enroll in a defensive driving course to further hone your skills behind the wheel. Also, it may be worth it to check with your insurance provider to see if taking a defensive driving course will qualify you for a discount on your automotive policy.

Defensive driving is important, as it can keep drivers and their passengers safe and potentially prevent accidents and injuries.
