RISK FACTOR FOR AFIB

Existing heart conditions: Heart valve problems; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is marked by a thickening of the walls of the heart chamber; acute coronary syndrome, an umbrella term used to refer to conditions in which blood supplies to the heart are suddenly blocked; and a history of heart attack are just some of the heart conditions that increase a person’s risk for AFib.Anyone with a personal or family history of these and other heart conditions is urged to discuss AFib with their physicians.

Friday and Saturday night might be the day people most identify as the best night to dine out at a restaurant, but a recent survey found that Sundayreignssupremeamong diners. According to a 2022 survey from Real Research, just under30percentof dinerssaid they eat out on Sunday, which makes the first day of the week more preferable than Friday (18.9 percent) and Saturday (15.4 percent). Perhaps more surprisingly, a greater number of respondents indicated they prefer to dine out on Monday (23 percent) than Friday or Saturday. Hair loss can affect quality of life and self-esteem. While it is common to lose some hair each day as part of the natural growing cycle, hair lost during the growth cycle will grow back for most people. But with hormonal conditions, illnesses, aging, and inherited conditions, new strands of hair don’t always grow back. The Cleveland Clinic says that a person cannot prevent all types of hair loss, but there are steps to keep hair healthy and minimize loss. Coping with stress in a healthy way; managing thyroid diseases or other hormonal conditions that could lead to hair loss; eating a diet that includes enough calories, protein and iron; avoiding hairstyles that pull tightly; and trying a cooling cap during chemotherapy treatment are steps one can take to minimize hair loss.

POSSIBLE MIGRAINE TRIGGERS

Dehydration: Dehydration can contribute to a host of adverse side effects, including migraines. According to the AMF, roughly one-third of people who suffer migraines report dehydration is a trigger for their headaches, with some noting that even slight dehydration can quickly cause debilitating head pain. Drinking sufficient amounts of water each day may help reduce migraine riskandfrequency.

Q.

Picky Eater

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Jonesy” is 11 years old and has suddenly become a very picky eater. He is barely touching his dry kibble, and he will only eat canned pate or fresh chicken, shredded very fine. Is this something to be concerned about? -- Martha Y., Tallahassee, Florida

DEAR MARTHA: Sudden, unexplained changes in a cat’s behavior -- especially around food -- often signal a change in their health. Call the veterinarian and describe your cat’s symptoms; the vet will likely ask you to bring Jonesy in for a look.

One possible cause is a dental infection. After age 4, more than half of cats begin to experience some degree of dental problems, like gingivitis, tooth infections and tooth resorption. Symptoms of dental disease include bad breath, excessive drooling, blood-tinged saliva, pawing at the face, dropping food from the mouth, lack of appetite and several more -- all requiring a visit to the vet.

Your cat’s vet will give him a complete physical exam to determine if something else is causing his lack of appetite, and will take a close look at his teeth. X-rays may be ordered to determine the extent of the problem.

If Jonesy’s issue is an infection, antibiotics will be prescribed. If a tooth is involved, the vet will probably recommend pulling it; this is done under anesthesia, and will provide so much relief to your cat.

Once your cat has recovered, the vet will likely set up a toothbrushing routine -- a finger brush and flavored toothpaste made just for cats work best. They may recommend a dry cat food that helps fight plaque buildup. There are many more preventive treatments available for pets today than in the past, so ask your vet how you can keep Jonesy happy and healthy through his senior years. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and immediately changed my diet and exercise regimen. I was able to lose 17 pounds in about two months but have started to experience a feeling of something being stuck in my throat. Could the sudden weight loss have brought thison?Iwassenttogetanultrasoundonmythyroid, and it came back negative. -- V.J.

A.ANSWER: A sensation of something stuck in the throat is common in clinical practice and can have many causes. It is referred to as a “globus” sensation. An ultrasound is a very reasonable test as a large thyroid mass (goiter) can cause a mechanical effect on the esophagus, which then leads to this sensation. Similarly, abnormalities in the esophagus, oropharynx and larynx may also lead to this sensation. Most experts recommend an evaluation with an endoscopy and a laryngoscopy for people with a persistent globus sensation.

Unintentional weight loss is a red flag in people with a globus sensation because if the cause behind the globus sensation is also leading people to lose weight, this means that it is more likely to be something serious. But this is not the case with you, so I can’t think of how losing weight could have been the cause behind your globus sensation.

Ifthesensationofsomethinginyourthroatcontinues, I recommend further evaluation by an ENT physician.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have high liver enzymes and bilirubin, most likely due to Gilbert syndrome. I’ve had elevated numbers since at least 2006 when I started to track them. I was recently prescribed a lowdosestatinafterreceivingaslightlyelevatedcoronary calcium score (49).

The statin did great at lowering my cholesterol but seriously elevated my AST and ALT numbers. (My AST and ALTlevels were 12 and 20 U/Lrespectively before treatment, then 41 and 32 U/L while on the statin. Normal is less than 35 U/L.) So, I discontinued its use. Are there any options other than statins to help reduce cholesterol? -- S.M.

Q. A.

ANSWER: Gilbert syndrome is a relatively common liver condition caused by abnormal bilirubin metabolism. People with this condition can get recurrent jaundice and high bilirubin levels. Statin drugs are generally considered to be safe in people with Gilbert syndrome. Many people (with and without Gilbert’s) will have elevations in their liver enzymes (ALTandASTlevels) due to statin drugs. Most authorities recommend reducing the dose or stopping the statin treatment if the liver enzymes go over three times the upper limit of normal -- above about 100 U/L -- which yours didn’t get close to. Since the risk to your liver from a statin is small, and the benefit of a statin in a person with even modest coronary calcium is relatively large, there is more benefit than harm for most people in your situation.

BACKYARD IDEAS ON A BUDGET

Many people enjoy the possibilitiesthatoutdoorliving offers and admit they would spendmoretimeoutsideif the exterior spaces of their homes featured more amenities. According to a 2024 survey by Allstate Protection Plans, Americans love outdoor living and entertaining. Seventysix percent of those who own outdoor products use their backyards, porches, patios, or balconies at least three times a week. About 25 percent of Canadians spent more time in managed landscapes in 2022 compared to 2021, according to a survey commissioned by theTurfMutt Foundation.

It’s clear people from all walks of life value time spent outdoors, but many homeowners cannot afford a major backyard overhaul. Thankfully, there are budgetfriendly upgrades anyone can embrace to maximize style and function.

Source thrift shops: Thrift shops are ideal places to find gently used items for the yard. Scour the aisles for patio sets, planters and more at deeply discounted prices. If you can’t find a matched set, look for patio pieces that have similar lines and materials to create a cohesive look and feel.

Grabsomepallets: There’s an entire craft offshoot involving the repurposing of pallets acquired from warehouses or hardware stores. Pallets can be transformed into everything from tables to sectionals to benches. Visit www.instructables.com/PalletFurniture/ for building ideas, or check out YouTube video tutorialsofferingtipsongetting started. Pallet furniture can be muchmoreaffordableforthose on tight budgets, particularly sincepalletsareoftenfree.

Lend a hand: Taking on some of the backyard renovations yourself can save money. Speakwithacontractor, mason or landscape architect to see if you can pitch in to lower costs. You might be able to tear out existing landscape to reduce labor expenses so that the professional can come in and get started right away.

Reuse and refresh: While thrift stores are one place to find inexpensive outdoor living items, you also can transform older furniture or hand-me-downs with some sanding and a coat of paint. Breathe new life into found items with paint, fresh cushions and enthusiasm.

Renovating an outdoor living space is achievable in a budget-friendly way with some creativity and know-how.

RAISE THE STAKES OF FAMILY GAME NIGHT

Getting the entire family together can take a little effort. There is no shortage of activities that pull family members apart most days of the week, from work obligations to sports practices to school events. The United Kingdom-based media provider Independent reported in 2023 on a study of 2,000 parents with children at home. The study found families are only spending six hours a week together, which is less than an hour each day. Furthermore, they only eat meals as a household four days out of seven. Eking out more time for family may be as easy as scheduling activities that everyone can rally behind. Family game nights give everyone an excuse to gather at least once a week. These tips can make family game night a can’t-miss activity.

· Start with simple games and branch out. The first step to a successful family game night is choosing the right game to engage all participants. This can be challenging when there are young children, teenagers, middle-aged adults, and even seniors participating. Visit an independently owned toy and games store and pick the brain of the proprietor. He or she will likely have some suggestions to get you started. As participants become more comfortable, you can branch out with games.

· Make it a recurring event. Set a firm day of the week for the game night. This way participants will block out that date andtime and make every attempt to attend. Treat game night like any other important appointment.

· Consider games with movement. Game night doesn’t have to mean sitting around a board game, which young children who have trouble sitting still may characterize as a “bored” game. Games that get people moving, whether it’s charades, drawing games or a game such as Twister® can be more engaging. Game night also can take activities to a golf driving range or an arcade.

· Gather for the right reasons. Game night should focus on having the entire family together laughing and competing in a good-natured way. It should not be a strict competition where winning is the only goal. Avoid the potential for sore losers who can sour game nights in a flash by letting everyone know that fun is the foremost priority of the night.

· Offer prizes. Encourage participation with the lure of prizes at the end. Prizes will not just go to the overall winner. There can be humorous awards, such as the player who messed up trivia questions the most, or the one who rolled matching pairs of the dice most frequently. You can customize the winning categories depending on the game played so everyone gets a fighting chance at a prize. Keep awards simple, like candy bars or other appealing treats.

· Identify a “game master.” Every game night should feature a game master who presides over the rules of the game. The rules can be the ones strictly off of the information sheet, or the ones you customize for your own fun. The game master’s job is to make sure the rules are enforced, but also to determine when it’s alright to let things slide. Family game nights are a vital way to bring everyone together at least once a week in a manner that is entertaining and fosters solid family relationships.

November 2

The ancient indigenous people of Mexico have practiced rituals celebrating the lives of past ancestors for around 3,000 years. The celebration that is now known as the Day of the Dead originally landed on the ninth month of the Aztec calendar and was observed for the entire month. In the 20th century, the month long festivities were condensed to three days called The Days of the Dead: Halloween on October 31, Day of the Innocents on November 1, and Day of the Dead on November 2.

ank You

On September 31st, a small group of classmates were dining at the Redwood in Naples when a kind person paid our entire tab. It was such a kind and generous thing to do, we all greatly appreciated it. There are not many members of our class left and this get together means so much to us. We will always remember your kindness to us; what a great generation you are! Thank you, this memory means so much to us.

Community Yard Sale Benefit

I would like to thank Kristi for organizing a Yard Sale benefit for my daughter Kate’s dental work. I would also like to acknowledge everyone who donated items for the sale, those that baked and donated items and, most especially, the community for stopping and supporting the sale. Kristi raised a significant amount of money for us to apply towards the dental bill and we will forever be grateful. Please know that we will pay it forward somehow.

ank You

To the person who found my check in the Walmart parking lot and returned it to the bank, I cannot thank you enough. You were my angel that day and I appreciate it more than you will ever know. There are still good people in this world.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

ruway Failure

When are we going to admit the Thruway billings by mail is a complete failure! I have had it with billings that are months late, late fees automatically added because the state is late, and the $2 processing fees that are an added tax. It was better when we were paying cash at the booths. When the Thruway was built in the 1950s it was completed and “grandfathered” in time to have tolls before the moratorium, and the public was told there would be tolls only until it was paid for. The Thruway takes in hundreds of millions of dollars every year only to be mixed in with other wasteful spending the state does. We never needed the rest stops to be torn down and re-built; someone in Albany got really rich from doing that. This is NY. It’s all corrupt. It never had to be this way.

I am a cyclist myself, but I am constantly put off by the reckless behavior of some riders, including E-bikers. Bicycle riders must obey all NYS vehicle and traffic laws. This means riding with traffic (not against) and please no riding on sidewalks! This is an accident waiting to happen. Thank you for your caution and courtesy.

RISK FACTOR FOR MOLD INFESTATION IN A HOME Basements/crawl spaces: Basements and crawl spaces are vulnerable to mold infestations because they tend to be dark and cool, which can contribute to dampness that facilitates mold growth. The Rhode Island Department of Health recommends using a dehumidifier in basements and crawl spaces.

Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as “AFib,” is more common among men than women. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes AFib is caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart. Males are more likely than women to develop AFib, though that does not mean the condition is not a threat to women. In fact, age is a significant risk factor for AFib, and a report from Henry Ford Health noted that women tend to live longer than men, which could explain why there were more women living with AFib in 2020 than there were men.The condition also manifests differently in men than women. HFH notes that high blood pressure and heart valve disease are more likelytoleadtoAFibinwomen, whilecoronaryarterydiseaseand a history of heart attack are most common risk factors for AFib in men.

FAGAN’S FUNERAL HOME

31 W Morris Street, Bath, New York

July 4, 1776, is an important dateinAmericanhistorythatis widelyconsideredthebirthday oftheUnitedStatesofAmerica. But some people argue that August 2 should actually be America’s birthday, since that was when the Declaration of Independencewassigned. The National Archives says that the Second Continental Congress adopted the United States Declaration of independence on July 4, 1776, formally severing ties with Britain. The approved Declaration was printed on July 5. On July 19, Congress ordered that the document be engrossed on parchment, which is a process of copying an official document in large hand. It is surmised that the engrosser was Timothy Matlock, an assistant to Charles Thomson, secretary to the Congress. It was nearly a month after the Declaration was adopted before the document began to be signed by delegates. The signing of the Declaration of Independence occurred primarilyon August2,1776,at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, a building later renamed Independence Hall. John Hancock, who was the President of the Congress, was the first to sign the engrossed copy. Signatures were arranged by states from northernmost to southernmost. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although not all were present to sign on August 2. Some delegates never managed to sign the Declaration, including Robert R. Livingston of New York, who was a member of the Declaration’s drafting committee.

Cancer is often discussed in ways that note the statistics regarding new diagnoses of the disease. That’s understandable, as the World Health Organization notes there were 20 million new cases diagnosed in 2022, when nearly 10 million individuals lost their lives to the disease. But it’s equally important, particularly for newly diagnosed patients and theirfamilies, torecognizehow many survivors of the disease are currently walking among us and, in many instances, living normal and fulfilling lives. Estimates from the WHO suggest roughly 53.5 million people across the globe were alive within five years of receiving a cancer diagnosis. Such a statistic highlights the incredible progress cancer researchers have made in combatting the disease and can serve as inspiration to the millions of people who will receive a diagnosis and begin treatment in the year ahead.
