Survived by children, Robert Feely (Lauri Nevol) of Henrietta, Lori (Mike) Bailey of Webster, Nanette Wong of Canandaigua, and Onnolee Hanna; grandchildren, Hillary (Terry) Nevin, Amanda Doyle, Shannon Feely, Allison Feely, Thao Hanna, Rachel Wong, Jason (Angel) Wong, and Carlyn Nevin; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Judy (Russ) Waltz; and many other loving family and friends.

Gwen worked for the Rush Henrietta School District and then worked for Hammer Lithograph, a printing company in Rochester, NY. She used to go bullhead fishing with Ted and she loved to feed and watch birds. Gwen was a very strong and loving mother and wife and was also very kind and caring. She loved family and especially to see her grandkids.

A graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, Henrietta, NY in the summer, the date will be announced in the future. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmot Cancer Center, 601 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14642.

Remote Learning

Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules.

The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning.

KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time.

ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help.

EXPLORE EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Many companies are offering free educational services while kids are home from school. Scholastic.com is offering online courses, Nat Geo for Kids, Fun Brain, PBS Kids, and Highlight Kids are other places to turn to for activities.

The Carbonel Family Impacts Lives with Rochester Inspired Masks

I

t was a time of uncertainty. COVID-19 had spread to the United States. There was talk of restrictions and quarantine, of ventilators and expected death tolls. For the Carbonel family of Honeoye Falls, the sounding of the alarm was their call to action, founding Rochester Inspired Masks.

Jennifer Carbonel, mother of three, recalled those early days. “There was such a feeling panic everywhere, and we were asking how we could help,” she said. “I know how to sew, and that made making masks a good choice.” Carbonel said she learned to sew at a young age. “I knew I could quickly teach my children to sew, too,” she added. “We started the first Monday after our children were sent home from school indefinitely.”

“My sister is a nurse at Strong,” she explained. “She volunteered to work in the COVID unit. Having a family member on the frontline definitely played a part. This need is near and dear to our hearts, and sewing masks was a way to have a purpose during this time, a way to do something positive.”

Carbonel began making fabric masks with her daughter Tatiana, a sophomore in college, her son Xavier, a student at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School which Carbonel and her parents had also attended, and her son Harrison, a middle school student at Honeoye Falls-Lima. “None of them sewed a stitch in their lives before this started!” exclaimed Carbonel, praising each of her children. “Tatiana created our logo, and she helps monitor and update our social media as well as fielding questions, organizing, tracking the requests and so many of the administrative pieces here.”

Mask numbers quickly soared into the thousands. “It grew much bigger than we could ever have imagined,” said Carbonel. Rochester Inspired Masks reached out to the community for support. “When I put it out to the community, I was completely in awe of how many people wanted to help in whatever way they could,” she shared. “Our volunteers number well over 100 people now.”

“If I post saying, ‘I received a delivery of elastic; who can cut,’ immediately, half a dozen people offer to do it,” said Carbonel. “I have received donations of material, bags and supplies from as far away as California, from people I do not know and have never met.”

The Carbonel kids sewing masks for those in need! shared. “We used ‘Rochester’ because we didn’t want anyone outside of town to think we wouldn’t help them. We are happy to help whoever needs masks, no matter where they live.” They even sent a mask to an exchange student in Spain.

As the tremendous need for masks continues, so do the Carbonels, reaching mask 5,117 on May 6th. “We lost track of the days and hours and weeks,” said Carbonel. “I have my work responsibilities, and my children have school, but we fit it in.”

Love and support for Rochester Inspired Masks flows in. “We receive cards, flowers, photos of families wearing our masks, notes,” shared Carbonel. “I collect all the notes and keep them in a box.” She adds that she has been embarrassed by personal attention. “There is literally an army of people helping every single day, not just me,” Carbonel insists. “I could never have made over 5,000 masks by myself with my children.

It is truly the definition of awesome!”

For now, Rochester Inspired Masks plans to continue as long as there is a need and as long as they are able. “If you need a mask, we will help you,” said Carbonel.

“People can’t comprehend that there is no charge, although we are very grateful to those who donate to keep us going. I don’t want anyone to have to decide whether they will buy necessities like food or buy face masks. We are in this together.”

“Laurie Talbot, a math teacher at the high school, cuts fabric for us.

We have several people who cut fabric. Laurie’s group will cut as many as 600 pieces of mask fabric in an evening. It is incredible, and there are many more! There are so many names I want to say; so many people who are doing amazing things every day. You would think by now they would be tired, but they don’t stop. They keep cutting, sewing, ironing, and packaging. I have sheer gratitude for each and every person who has been a part of this ongoing effort.”

The volunteers are a testament to the Honeoye Falls community.

“I was born and raised here,” she said. “It is funny because a lot of people call it Mayberry, and it really is. When there is a need, so many people will step up and help.”

As its name implies, these masks have gone far beyond Honeoye Falls. “We liked ‘Inspired’ because it can mean so many things,” Carbonel

Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it.

Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable.

• Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns.

That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates.

Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums.

Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low.

• Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums.

• Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save.

• Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar.

Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

Sheltering Pets During a Disaster DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just moved to a new part of the country, where natural disasters like floods are more frequent than I’m used to.

When checking out available emergency services, I found out that there is no emergency shelter nearby that allows pets.

What can I do? -- Charlie B., via email DEAR CHARLIE: Knowing ahead of time what emergency services are available in a disaster is an excellent move.

You won’t have as many unpleasant surprises during the high stress of a natural disaster. But it is a bummer that the local disaster shelter doesn’t accept pets.

First, locate the nearest disaster shelter that does allow you to shelter with your pet.

Develop a contingency plan for evacuating to this shelter, if possible. Another option is to identify pet-friendly hotels within an hour or two of your home; if you need to leave for more than a day, these may be an option.

Next, find out if there are designated shelters just for pets during or after a natural disaster. You wouldn’t be able to stay with your pets, but they would be safe.

Third, get engaged with the local government and animal shelter. Talk to your new veterinarian, too. Find out if there’s a local emergency management office and call them. Are any plans in place for taking care of pets in a disaster? If not, ask for steps to be taken to include this contingency.

During California’s wildfires in 2018, there were very few facilities just for animals, and no shelters allowed them. The need was so great that empty strip malls were repurposed to care for pets and abandoned animals. Urge local government to create a plan now, before a disaster, so all pets in the area will have a safe place to stay.

Joint Pain Not Usual Statin Side Effect ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old white male. I take one 20-mg pravastatin per day to manage my cholesterol. One of the side effects is joint pain. Are you aware of a substitute that does not have this joint pain side effect? -- H.L. ANSWER: Statins are one of the most common medicines used, and although they have relatively few side effects, so many people take them that there are many reported untoward effects.

Muscle aches are common. Muscle breakdown is serious and, fortunately, rare. But joint aches are not a common side effect. In the package insert, “arthritis” is listed in less than 1% of people.

Of all the statins, pravastatin tends to have relatively few side effects. It is metabolized differently from how the others are, so have a discussion with your doctor about taking a different statin, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lipitor is much more potent than pravastatin (Pravachol), so the dose you will need is likely to be much lower. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion on screening for ovarian cancer in a woman with a family history (in my case, a sister)? One gynecologist stressed an annual ultrasound, while the other discouraged me from doing so. I am worried that if I wait until symptoms develop, the cancer might be pretty advanced.

-- W. ANSWER: I really understand why people with increased risk for ovarian cancer are interested in screening. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any screening tests, such as an ultrasound or CA-125 blood test, that are good enough to recommend yet. I hope this changes soon. Promising work is progressing.

Consider genetic testing for a familial cancer syndrome, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome. People with one of these cancer syndromes are at high enough risk that screening may be of benefit, and there are ongoing studies to help identify the best strategy. Speak to your gynecologist about a referral to a genetic counselor. If you test negative for these genetic syndromes, you are at lower risk (but unfortunately, even low-risk women still may get ovarian cancer).

You certainly should be vigilant for even mild symptoms of ovarian cancer; these are nonspecific and may include abdominal discomfort, bloating or swelling. Urinary urgency (a sense of needing to get to the bathroom right away) also should prompt a visit to your gynecologist, more so than in people without a family history. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible that when immersed in water, you absorb it through your skin? Whenever I spend more than 30 minutes in the pool, I later have to urinate more than when I don’t spend time in the water. Can the absorbed water travel to kidneys?

Can the chemicals added to pool water do some damage? -- E.M. ANSWER: Water is not absorbed to any appreciable effect when the body is immersed. The reason you urinate more may be due to unnoticed swallowing of pool water, which is very common in swimmers.

Don’t worry about the chlorine in pool water. The amount of chlorine is similar to or only a bit higher than most tap water, and is not enough to be dangerous. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

Thank you to local school districts for working tirelessly seven days a week to provide learning activities and support to children and parents. The decision to keep our kids out of school has caused tremendous sadness for teachers. We hoped NYS would allow us to finish our school year face-to-face in class with our kids. Teachers are putting extended time into preparing lessons, creating activities that can connect to curriculum, attending virtual meetings with staff, training themselves on the digital environment, volunteering to pass out food and supplies

so judgmental. Also, to the person complaining about people going out in public, you are out in public as well.

You should not be so judgmental about a person that needs to go to work. They might not have the luxury of being able to stay home.

Filing for unemployment is not an option now because of all the people who are out of work. They may have a family they need to feed, a house to pay for, bills to keep the gas and electricity on. People are becoming so nasty anymore. If someone must work, then that is what they must do, if someone must go to the store, do not be rude about what they are buying.

I want to thank the Farmington TOPS for their above and beyond efforts for maintaining COVID-19 precautions and sanitizing. They wipe down every cart after use and have areas for cleaned carts.

They wash the carts after they are brought back inside. This is time consuming and a lot of work. There is tape on the floor at registers to help give people the 6ft distancing. Isles and spaces are much more open. They have some dedicated shopping hours for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like many other stores, they close early have to

work, March 15th. I am selfemployed and have no income.

I cannot work under new Pause order. Also, I have preexisting health issues that prevent me from taking an essential worker job. After many calls to complete an application, I received a call on April 17th. It took 20 minutes for the lady to say that I am approved, and I will get money in a few days, but I must recertify by Sunday. I did so only to be told I cannot recertify because my application is not complete, and that I must call the other number. I have called many times so far and have been hung up on each time after the systems says to hold. If it were not for food pantries, I think a lot of New Yorkers would starve to death! Each day that passes is one day closer to my company going bankrupt.

Shame on you. People put a lot of time and love into the one spot they can go and visit their loved one. If it ever happened to you, how would feel? The grave sites of loved ones are so private and personal to whoever visits, and to think someone would destroy their love and hard work is sad and unbelievable. It is against the law, and you can only hope that no one saw you and will not go to the police with the information. With all that is going on in the world right now, we have people like you doing more destruction to this world in just another way.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn.

When to aerate depends on the type of grass. 6 ways to prevent falls around the house

Help Fill the Hours With an E-Reader I don't often recommend specific products in this column, but there's one that many of us could use right now: a Kindle.

The Kindle is a handheld reading device, also called an e-reader, that holds thousands of books. Books can be downloaded into a Kindle -- both books you buy (or read for free) from Amazon, and free books from your local library. With Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, for $9.99 a month, you can read as many books as you like, or many books are $2.99 or less.

For the device itself, consider the Kindle Paperwhite. Go to Amazon and read the reviews, questions and technical specs, such as WiFi versus WiFi+Cellular Connectivity, audio capability and storage size.

If you already have a tablet, you can read e-books as well. You'll need an app, available for free on Amazon, if that's where you're going to order books. In the search box on Amazon, type in Kindle app.

The biggest difference between reading on a tablet and reading on a Kindle is this: The Kindle has one purpose, which is reading. The screen doesn't have a glare (unlike the shiny glass on a tablet), and you can easily increase the size of the type font.

If you want to download free books from your library, either onto a Kindle or a tablet, you can likely get help if you need it. Many libraries are technically closed now (the public can't go in), but staff are still there, some of them specifically to offer technical help. Call to ask for the specific e-reader app they use.

Despite all of the potential hazards around a house - from electrical issues to fire hazards to carbon monoxide - the National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents.

Falls are responsible for one-third of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone.

A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. As a result, seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls. These steps can minimize risk at home.

1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms and hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place nonslip materials beneath rugs.

2. Install grab bars or railings. Install grab bars in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets and bathtubs and in stairways and hallways.

3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly and have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery.

4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets and other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them.

5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way.

6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, and check that exterior handrails are secure.

Falls can cause serious injury or death, particularly for aging men and women. Simple fixes around the house can make things more secure and reduce the risk for falls. TF206001

As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort.

Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted.

Position Responsibilities/Requirements include, but not limited to: • Knowledge of Fair Housing, ADA and other specialized governmental requirements for operation of publicly-financed Rental Housing with both NYS and Federal level guidelines.

• Ability to collaborate with support agencies and services providers for special populations (i.e., the Elderly, Disabled, Veterans, etc.).

• Ability to oversee & guide the work of multiple Rental Site Managers/Site Caretakers and property maintenance contractors.

• Work with an in-house Supported Housing Services team led by Regional Services Coordinator for certain services-enriched properties for the Elderly, Frail Elderly and Disabled.

• Prepare regular, highly accurate compliance reports for various agencies/lenders, both private and public.

• Develop and implement required Marketing Plans for target markets and ensure maximum occupancy.

• Supervise and train Site Staff; Assist with tenant relations, eligibility certifications and other landlord/ tenant matters.

• Assist with preparation and tracking of Annual Budgets for properties and monitor expenses.

• Reliable transportation for regional periodic travel (day travel primarily).

• Reliable judgment, ability to meet deadlines, and problem solving skills within company and regulatory guidelines.
