Despite the risk to people eating contaminated fish, the public was not told of the spill for more than a month. Fish in the area displayed mutations for several years afterward.

I want to thank my neighbor across the street on Broxbourne Drive in Fairport for helping to plow my driveway after the snowstorm on February 16 when he saw that my snowplow was too small to tackle the amount of snow that had piled up on my driveway. He wouldn’t even accept the money I offered him for his troubles. I want to thank the Webster Goodyear on Empire Blvd. for filling my tires with air when they were low on February 13 during the coldsnow spell we had that weekend. The man not only filled my tires, he didn’t charge me for it. I was on my way out to Hilton to see my girlfriend and I made it with plenty of time to enjoy together! I wish to send a big shout out THANK YOU to the snow plow driver who pushed the snow out of my

Page 7

driveway Tuesday 2/16/16. I was out shoveling the remaining piles from an earlier plow, when you stopped and pushed it out of the way! What a blessing it was to me! You are an angel! Thank you from the house near the LeRoy American Legion! I’d like to thank all those good citizens who helped me round up my two horses when they decided to make their great winter escape on Wednesday morning 2/17/16. They trotted down snow covered roads, Jackson & South, Holley. Cindi Davis saw me trying to catch the rouge ponies and gave me a ride to keep up with the horses. Once I caught the horses I had to walk them home. Cindi stayed behind me with her car flashers on to warn traffic. Two other good citizens helped, John Carp & a red SUV; I was unable to get her name. A big THANKS to all!!

I will make this short because it is sad. My wish is that whomever owns our town cemetery will put a covering over the fence spikes so the baby deer don’t get caught and die. That’s what happened recently. Please do this good deed because it will come back to you. The wildlife deserve to be protected. To the vent about Volunteer members picking up meals and shopping with ambulance. Join us there is a U in VolUnteer and we need U. We are ON DUTY waiting for a call many hours a day as VOLUNTEERS. We have radios ON and drop everything immediately to respond to the incident. Many times we are also training NEW members in the roads, properties, churches, schools, childcare

centers, stores, markets, playing fields, doctors offices, business offices, dangerous structures, emergency access points for trails, airports, fire houses. All places we receive calls from multiple times a year. As a volunteer member over 40 years, I find that every time we are in the community we see and do something different. Join us, we need more U’s or soon we all will be paying more taxes.lf is it worth it?! I think not! Is this true? When a person is not employed--at all on any books anywhere-and has a few side jobs and earns cash--does that person file taxes AND GET A REFUND? What a scam, if true, when our military people don’t always receive a paycheck on time... Family members of the local mobile home park get special treatment from the employees who work for the park. And the employees happen to be relatives. They get their driveways plowed for free. Work done on their home for free. They can use empty lot parking for free – where we get charged $25. The rest of the residents have to pay for everything! And get rent hikes!! In this mobile home park – there is no justice!

FHS teacher nominated for LifeChanger of the Year Award Michael Mallaber, social studies teacher at Fairport High School, has been nominated for the 2015-16 national LifeChanger of the Year award. Mallaber was nominated by colleague John Baynes, English teacher at Fairport High School. Mallaber excels as a teacher, coach, advisor and district leader. An experienced Advanced Placement American History and Politics teacher, Mallaber spearheaded the school’s leadership course, where students spend the summer working on public policy projects. Each year, he leads a trip to Washington, DC to encourage students to dig into complex topics like nuclear disarmament and cyber security. “His students adore him,” said Baynes. “His enthusiasm is infectious, and his moral center is unwavering. He expects that every student will exemplify self-respect, integrity and concern for others. He insists on it. Colleagues who have spent time with his students have witnessed first-hand the deep respect they have for him.” Outside the classroom, Mallaber works with the District’s attorney and human resources department to negotiate districtwide items such as curriculum changes and hiring decisions. He also organizes a senior citizen prom that brings together students and community members for a lively event, complete with performances by the school jazz band. Mallaber also coaches modified basketball and supports the varsity and junior varsity basketball teams. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, the LifeChanger of the Year program recognizes and rewards the best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are making a difference in the

Michael Mallaber lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership. Each school year, the LifeChanger of the Year program receives hundreds of nominations. For 2015-16, a total of 16 winners will be chosen by the selection committee to receive cash awards that are split between the individual winner and their school. The national grand prize award is $10,000. The top five winners will also be honored at a national awards ceremony. Winners will be announced in spring 2016. To view Mallaber’s LifeChanger of the Year nominee profile, visit www.LifeChangeroftheYear.com.

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with

age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

Milford I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. They fight for honor at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvelous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying. ~George Bird Evans

is a mini lop eared bunny. He was acquired at an auction. Milford has been trained and uses a litter box as a house cat does. Milford is so soft and when he chooses to cuddle he is a great “snuggle bunny.” He is sure to let you know when his dish is empty or needs more snacks - he thumps very loudly!! Aside from his bunny food his favorite is popcorn! He is the best $1 investment I have ever made!!!

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M. ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S. ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broadspectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. It’s worth discussing further with your urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Go Easy On The Alcohol Fans of the AMC television series “Mad Men” might feel the best business deals are those consummated over a couple of bottles of scotch. Though that might have been the norm in the 1960s, such an approach is largely outdated. A sipping drink, such as a glass of wine, is most appropriate, and limit yourself to one or two glasses. If the waiter is liberal with the refills and the client is taking full advantage, don’t be afraid to excuse yourself from the table and discreetly ask the server to stop refilling glasses or offering another bottle.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Invite Early When hosting a business dinner, it’s best to give prospective or existing clients at least one week’s notice. Anything less than a week will seem too lastminute and might give clients the impression, whether true or false, that a host and his company are disorganized and sloppy. When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance.

Eco- Friendly Ways To Alter Your Professional Life Forget you have a printer. Now adays, few er and few er people rely on printed documents to get through the w orkday. Advances w ith regard to computer technology has made it just as easy to read documents on a computer screen as it is to do so on a sheet of paper. If you’re among the last to embrace this grow ing trend, think of the environment before you print your next document and opt to read documents on your desktop rather than printing them out. Instead of leaving notes for cow orkers, send them e-mails instead. This saves paper, w hich in turn w ill save your company money, and it also reduces your reliance on ink that can potentially harm the environment. W hen making presentations, do so using slides rather than printing materials and handing them out in a packet. E-mail cow orkers the presentation in advance and print out a single copy for the meeting rather than printing multiple copies. If you and your cow orkers simply must print documents, try to use tw osided printing and copying to reduce your paper usage. And urge your office manager to order supplies made from recycled materials and discard of any potentially harmful products, including ink cartridges, in an eco-friendly w ay.
