Envisioning the Possibility Within

“If you can envision it, we can make it happen.” That is Julie Muscato’s motto. Owner of Julie Muscato Home & Gifts in Lockport, she makes it a habit of creating dreams for homeowners. The showroom, located at 1 Walnut Street along the beautiful and historic Erie Canal, is 7,000 square feet of inspiration. Along with a gift shop that ensures locals and tourists alike have the perfect gift for any and all occasions, Julie Muscato Home & Gifts is a staple in Western New York.

Exceptional Offerings for Every Style

As a women-owned small business, Julie Muscato Home & Gifts stands out from the crowd. Most of the upholstery and furniture in the showroom is American-made, with limited exceptions for certain case goods. The showroom focuses on creativity and strays far from trends that may be common for larger corporations.

From mid-century modern to classic traditional and every style in between, Julie and her team think outside the box and help each customer arrive at their interior design destination. With limitless creativity, Julie Muscato Home & Gifts is a luxury brand that offers many different price points, making it simultaneously elegant and accessible. When Julie and her team finish a room, it won’t look like many others, and that is the point. Each project is unique and caters to the customer.

The showroom is versatile and features one of the largest fabric libraries in Western New York, along with an incredibly large wallpaper library that rivals anyone in the region. Julie says, “We have several different upholstery lines that offer all sorts of different styles.” Custom window treatments and bedding, along with beautiful, reupholstered pieces of sentimental value, invite unique patterns, textures, and palettes into each room.

While the sky is the limit with creativity at Julie Muscato, she and her team are careful to focus beyond current trends. As she explains, interior design is a significant expense, and investing in a room in one’s home means it should be an investment that stands the test of time.

“Stick with your classics – in all genres,” Julie encourages. Whatever the customer’s style, sticking with tried-and-true pieces that fit the style will create longevity. If a current trend speaks to a customer, Julie works to carefully incorporate those elements to provide a balanced, fun, and approachable room.

Women-Owned, Team Oriented, Proven Success

Julie Muscato Home & Gifts is currently in its fourteenth year of business – a feat that reflects the impact it has had on the Western New York region. To Julie, this has only been possible through dedication and hard work. She describes getting up every day, loving what she does, and serving her community.

As a women-owned, women-led business, Julie and her team of five are small but very mighty, and she says, “We inspire each other every day.” Team members come from different backgrounds and bring a diversity of talents to the work. Each year since inception, the business has grown, and Julie loves being able to take the team with her on this path of success. Each member has an equal place and collaborates openly on every project, a teamwork model that is at the heart of the business.

Julie acknowledges that there were few local womenowned interior design businesses when she first started, and she hopes to create space for female business owners or those who wish to begin the journey of starting their own business. Additionally, she is a member of the Interior Design Association of Western New York, which brings together many other vendors and womenowned businesses to connect and collaborate in creative environments.

In addition to a dedicated team, communication is crucial when working with customers, Julie says, as “Our customers invest a lot in us. The communication between us and our customers through the entire [design] process is huge.” A project for a single room in a customer’s house could involve upwards of twenty different vendors. To make each project come together in harmony, Julie and her team focus on strong organization and transparent communication between many moving parts. Working closely over the course of days, weeks, or months with customers, they remain detail-oriented and steadfast in building trust with each client as they ensure their dream space becomes reality.

Fall Into Place

With fall around the corner, this is the perfect time of year to work on an interior design project. As the leaves turn bright red and crisp orange, cooler weather brings many of us indoors to reflect on changes and hopes for the home. Starting a project with Julie Muscato in autumn – before the busyness of the holiday season – provides homeowners the opportunity to reinvent their space while getting everything in order before family converges.

If an interior design project is not on the horizon this season, Julie Muscato’s gift shop has home accessories to brighten any room in the house. From needlepoint-chic pillows with clever, funny quotes to beautiful clothing and jewelry to fancy pink coup glasses, the gift shop is a destination for those looking for variety.

Fall

in Western New York is honestly our favorite time of year. There's nothing like driving through the Finger Lakes when the leaves are changing, or spending a Saturday afternoon at a local apple orchard with the kids. The whole region just comes alive in autumn, and our neighborhoods look like something straight out of a magazine, which is pretty perfect for what we do! All three of us are lucky enough to live right between Rochester & Buffalo, giving us the opportunity to enjoy so much fun from everywhere.

At Buffalo Home Magazine, we get to combine our love for this area with our passion for showcasing the amazing local businesses that make WNY so special. We're not just putting together a pretty publication, we're connecting our readers with the talented contractors, designers, and shop owners who can help make their house dreams come true. Every time you choose to work with one of the local businesses we feature, you're supporting your neighbors and keeping our community strong. That's what gets us excited to come to work every day.

A note to my younger self...

REFLECTIONS FROM LOCAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Let’s be real—being a woman in business is equal parts chaos, coffee, and courage. Some days you’re crushing it, other days you’re questioning everything. But then someone thanks you, buys what you’re selling, or says you lit a spark in them, and your whole day turns around. These are the things we’d go back and tell our younger selves:

Kathleen + Claudia Unique Excursions with Bear Kathleen: “Show your joy. Trust your gut. Tell your story. Don’t wait—we never get enough time in this life.”

Claudia: “You don’t have to see the whole path to take the first step. Trust your instincts, stay curious, and let each phase of life teach you something. The passions that light you up will be your best guide."

Nora Saintz

"Travel far and frequently. Those days of freedom don't last!"

Austyn Galmarini

"The world isn't ending if it all doesn't go according to plan. As long as you put forth the effort, it all will work out! And don't forget, it's not the size of the village but the people who are in it that matters the most."

Peggy Tyrrell

Darien Country Cottage

"Start small. Say a prayer of thankfulness for each new day, and use that time to grow, succeed, and share your passion with others. Follow your heart, be confident, and find joy in what you do every day."

Colleen

Jen + Madison Andrews

Thee Mercantile

Jen: "Don't be afraid of failing. You will if you don't try!"

Madison: "People will always have reasons why you shouldn't follow your heart. Don't let their doubts influence your dreams–the reward is far greater than wondering what could have been."

Pandy & Jillian Cannan

Buffalo Holiday Market

Colleen: "People evolve through experience, relationships, hardship, and reflection. Sometimes it’s slow and subtle; other times it’s sudden and radical. But change is both possible and necessary. Be the change you wish to see, if you can’t share your accomplishments with people, then they aren’t your people!"

Jillian: "Trust your heart. Plans will change— that’s inevitable. But if you stay true to who you are, the path ahead will always lead you to where you're meant to be.

Elizabeth Maute

Graphic Poetry

"I was on a different path for my career in my early thirties. I would get very frustrated and have lots of self-doubt when things didn't work out, no matter how hard I worked. What I didn't understand was that everything I went through was a small stepping stone and lesson that was leading to the bigger picture. I would tell her she needs to be patient and have faith. Trust the process, learn to let go, and keep your head down. It's all going to work out the way it's meant to."

Jess Croce

The curtiss Hotel

"If I could give my younger self advice, it would be to appreciate every day and the loved ones around you... you don't get those days back! Every new day is a gift, learn to be kind to everyone (they all have their own story) and to live in the present moment with no regrets."

Swing Into Sisterhood

What started as one woman’s dream to make golf more fun, social, and inclusive has turned into a powerhouse community with over 3,000 Instagram followers and counting. Lady Links of Buffalo, founded by Dana Szymkowiak, is shaking up the old notion that “golf is just a good walk spoiled.”

On July 14, 2025, Lady Links celebrates two years of teeing up good times. Inspired by a family full of golfers, Dana created Lady Links to be more than a game. It’s a warm and welcoming space for women who are picking up a club for the first time, getting back into the swing of it, or just looking to make some amazing new friends.

With events that mix skill-building with plenty of laughs, Lady Links is where friendships flourish and confidence grows both on and off the green.

“Golf can be intimidating. It’s still such a male-dominated sport. I wanted to build something different! A safe, fun space where women can show up, learn, laugh, and feel like they belong.”

let’s golf girls.

Join the Fun

Lady Links focuses on making golf fun, accessible, and affordable for everyone. Throughout the year, members can attend group lessons and clinics. Once players grasp the basics, they’re encouraged to book individual lessons with one of the many PGA professionals who partner with Lady Links—pros who love what they do, getting new people “hooked” on golf.

No clubs? No problem. Some participating courses and ranges offer rentals, and Lady Links also keeps a donated set of right-handed clubs on hand for events (just give a heads-up in advance). Starting with a beginner set is a smart, budget-friendly way to learn. As you start finding your swing, you can upgrade piece by piece—maybe a new driver here, a favorite hybrid there. Ask friends what they love, or book a fitting session to find clubs that match your game.

Even with the right set of clubs and lessons, many women are hesitant to hit the course. That’s why Lady Links created a laid-back, non-competitive summer league June through September, in which women sign up to play weekly. Experienced and new players support one another—fostering a judgmentfree, encouraging environment.

From Scrambles to Socials

Like the game itself, Lady Links just keeps gaining momentum. What started in 2023 with just a handful of women meeting up to play—sometimes as few as 8 to 12— has grown into a thriving community. Fast forward to June 3, 2025, and the Women’s Golf Day Tournament at Ironwood Golf Course welcomed 140 women, making it the group’s biggest event yet.

One of the most memorable outings? Birdies, Bites, and Botox—a lively, social event that highlights Dana’s dedication to supporting local and women-owned businesses. These creative partnerships have helped Lady Links build stronger community roots and a growing network of like-minded women.

Not even Buffalo’s unpredictable weather can slow things down. The Lady Links & Drinks nights at The Dome on Wehrle regularly draw more than 60 women for casual swings, conversation, and connection. Off-season meetups at local golf simulators keep the energy going year-round, helping players stay sharp and keep friendships strong.

As member Sheleka Massey puts it, “My favorite outings so far are the ones held at the Dome. It has allowed me to meet new women who share this passion with me. Everyone is so encouraging, friendly, and inspiring. At the last event, I was able to exchange numbers with another Lady Link babe. I am so excited to get out on the course and learn from each other. I love that these women help to build your confidence and also celebrate your wins ”

“I genuinely can’t believe how many wonderful friends I’ve made from Lady Links and how supportive and warm the environment always is at all of our events. Lady Links has given me so many opportunities to learn and improve my game! It’s gotten me to love golf even more!” - Luci Ellis
“If you love the game of golf and want to play with uplifting, motivating, inspiring women—these ladies are your tribe.”

Level Up Your Game

Since Lady Links provides so many opportunities to play consistently, golfers improve. Lady Links helps women embrace their competitive spirit with casual, fun tournament formats—usually 9-hole scrambles where everyone hits and the group plays the best ball. Dana hosts monthly themed scramble tournaments at their Monday Ladies League. Look for an End of Summer 9-Hole Scramble at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in September.

For most, these tournaments aren’t about the leaderboard. They’re about laughter, teamwork, and simply enjoying the day. In 2024, Lady Links sponsored the Olmsted Open at Delaware Park, raising funds to support Buffalo’s public parks. “This cause is near and dear to me,” Dana says. “These public parks and golf courses are such a great way for new golfers to get out on the course affordably.”

Although golfers will remember their best rounds, they quickly forget their score, whether accomplished or mediocre, as they book their next tee time. Lady Links golfer, Chloe Benzin, says it best, “I found Lady Links of Buffalo on a whim! Showed up to Wehrle Golf Dome on a random Friday night and found the best community. I truly think everything happens for a reason, and that was no coincidence! I’ve made so many new friends, connected with like-minded women, and fell in love with the game of golf. It’s a sport that has truly inspired me. You’ll always have good shots and bad shots, but it really is you vs. you every time you step on the course.”

Event announcements are shared on Instagram and Facebook, and as friendships grow, players often coordinate their own tee times to explore new courses or return to old favorites. Lady Links helps make that easy with group chats and email lists so players can connect and plan their next round together.

the big C word.

When faced with a cancer diagnosis, some people retreat inward. Others, like Buffalo locals, Kimberly and Sophia, choose to lean into their communities and use their experiences to lift others up. Their stories show how finding your tribe, and helping others find theirs, can transform not just a diagnosis, but an entire community’s approach to facing life’s biggest challenges.

A Note from Our Editors:

While we typically focus on uplifting content, cancer has been hitting our hearts a little heavier recently, affecting our friends, families, and locals we care about. We felt called to address this difficult topic because sometimes the most meaningful support comes from acknowledging hard truths alongside hope. If this article brings comfort, guidance, or even a moment of connection to just one person, then we’ve done our part. – Sarah & Kara

KimberlyLaRussa

If you’ve been in Western New York in recent years, chances are you’ve come across Kimberly LaRussa’s work— whether or not you know her name. She’s the force behind Sweet Buffalo, Buddy’s Second Chance Rescue, Ten Lives Club promotions, and even those hidden, painted rocks with uplifting messages.

Photo Left: Tailor Mayde Photography

Nine years ago, Kimberly launched Sweet Buffalo (@SweetBuffalo716), a digital platform focused on sharing good news and supporting kids, families, animals, and non-profits. Her background in journalism, public speaking, and public relations helps drive her mission in this lasting network of care and community. From Sweet Buffalo Monday on News 4 Buffalo to segments supporting Buddy’s Second Chance Rescue, Kimberly uses her voice and skills to help others. She also founded Sweet Buffalo Rocks to raise funds and spread kindness, efforts that now inspire businesses and individuals to reach out for help achieving their own goals.

In December 2024, Kimberly received the diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma HER2 positive, a type of breast cancer. To date Kimberly has undergone 12 weeks of chemotherapy, entered a clinical study at Roswell to receive targeted treatment for her type of cancer, and a lumpectomy. She is currently cancer free but still faces another year of targeted treatment and radiation. Through it all, she has continued to work. She said her work helped with her treatments, inspiring her to keep going. Additionally, as part of the study, she had a service dog with her during treatments, which she says also made a huge difference. Before her diagnosis she already had a strong drive to help, but after experiencing it herself, “I understand so much better and can help so much more.”

This year she is the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Executive Ambassador. Her goal is to raise at least $10,000, and no surprise, she’s not waiting until the walk in October to do so. She is working through the “Pink Summer” with the Pink Buffalo Club to maximize the time to raise funds for the event as well as to raise awareness. One of Kimberly’s main goals is for people to understand they don’t need to suffer alone; everyone should have a tribe, and the work she does is to help provide people with a tribe of their own.

Kimberly was already a strong community builder, and her experience with cancer let her experience first-hand the community she’s helping create. It has helped give her the courage to keep going and has spurred her to continue her work with an even stronger sense of purpose.

SophiaBaudo

Sophia Baudo is NOT your average teenager. At least, not the picture many of us have in our heads of millennial teens. Sophia IS, however, very much a Gen Z teen. True to her generation, she desires to create positive change, is open about discussing mental health and prioritizing well-being, seeks a career that offers meaning and purpose, and is incredibly authentic. And, oh yeah, she’s almost one year into remission from Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Sophia wasn’t feeling great when she started her senior year of high school at Nardin Academy, but she just assumed it was a cold. By January 2024, they found out it was much worse: she had cancer. Initially, Sophia says she felt scared, terrified, and angry. After a week or so, she spoke with her dance instructors from Company Eight Dance Studio, Miss Jen and Miss Colleen, and they helped her realize that in dance they are constantly fighting in technique, truly fighting for everything in competition. From those conversations, Sophia resolved to just “fight the diagnosis just like I learned to fight in dance.”

And fight she did. Her mindset went from fear and anger to opportunity. She saw her experience as a way to show people that her diagnosis didn’t have to define her or be the end of her life. She thought hopefully they would feel the same if ever faced with such a diagnosis. When she posted on her socials after losing her hair with chemotherapy, non-profit groups such as Sweet Buffalo reached out with help. Sophia and her family were incredibly grateful for the financial support that came, but even more so for the emotional support they offered her entire family. Sophia learned first-hand how important it is to have a tribe to support you.

As a senior in high school, Sophia really didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life. For college all she could think about was majoring in dance at the University of Alabama and being a member of their dance team. While her diagnosis changed things, dance was not out of her life.

Company Eight Dance Studio went out of its way to make sure she could still dance throughout her 12 weeks of chemotherapy and beyond. They offered to

do whatever it would take to make her comfortable so she could keep dancing, which helped her so much through the treatments. As a competitive dancer, attendance is key, but she wasn’t pressured, simply allowed to do what she loved as she could.

As a dancer, Sophia was familiar with the non-profit Dancers Give Back (DGB), because she had danced at their events. DGB began 14 years ago to support the Jacquie Hirsch for A.L.L. Foundation, founded to honor Jacquie Hirsch, a friend who passed away due to Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at age 23. The event includes studios and dancers from across New York and has raised nearly one million dollars for cancer patient support and research. After Sophia’s diagnosis, DGB reached out to Sophia’s family, offering financial support and the opportunity to volunteer teach a class for them. Her passion for dance and giving back became key parts of her fight. What may have had the largest impact on Sophia, though, are the psychologists she worked with at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Oishei Children’s Hospital. Sophia now attends the University of Buffalo, aiming to be a psychologist like the ones she worked with through her treatment.

While Sophia still has many scans and doctors appointments ahead of her the next few years, she is energized to be a positive force. Besides school and a nannying job, she keeps busy teaching dance, helping with Kailee’s Kindness events, and volunteering with groups like Ride for Roswell, Courage for Carly, anywhere she can help. Her passion is contagious, and it is no surprise to find that her friends, her tribe, are by her side, volunteering every step of the way. •

A DAY IN YOUNGSTOWN A DAY IN YOUNGSTOWN

There’s something undeniably special about Youngstown. Just ask Sue McNaughton, a lifelong resident and proud ambassador of the village, who says, “I love the village. This morning, I saw the usual group of men gathered on the porch of the coffee shop. One of them walked up the steps with a leaf blower—maybe the porch needed cleaning, or maybe he just wanted to show off his new toy? Then I headed into the Youngstown Diner and settled in at the counter to catch up on local news, hear what’s interesting on the History Channel, and learn who’s feeding peanuts to the squirrels. After that, I put the OPEN sign out at my shop, and a neighbor stopped by with plates of Iris Toes from her garden, free for anyone to take. It’s life in a small town.”

Sue recently welcomed travel blogger Carly Marie for a day-long tour of her town, and Carly was quickly enchanted, saying, “Youngstown is charming and quaint, with a really adorable small-town USA vibe. It’s one of those underrated destinations you don’t know about unless you have a reason to visit.”

Carly had been to the area once before with her father to visit Old Fort Niagara. They’d made a short detour down Main Street but didn’t explore further, so when Sue gave her a tour, Carly says, “I’m so glad I came back. There’s so much to see and do.”

COFFEE, WATERFRONT VIEWS, + PILATES BY THE LAKE

Sue and Carly’s day began at Hill of Beans Coffee Shop, a cozy café housed in a historic building. The owner, Lou Beans, a Texas transplant, has created a beautiful space filled with warmth and local flavor, a perfect place to start the day.

From there, Sue introduced Carly to Youngstown’s scenic waterfront, home to the Youngstown Yacht Club and a hub for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and all things water. Sue says sailing is huge here, and Carly emphasizes it’s a hit for young and old. Sue is a former racer who’s stepped back from competition now but still beams with enthusiasm as she tells Carly about the village's sailing programs and summer regattas.

The pair’s next stop was Studio A Pilates, a stunning space inside a historic building with panoramic views of the lake. Carly says, “It’s just absolutely beautiful. Practicing with that view—just incredible. Studio A is a fantastic addition to the village.”

SHOPS, SCOOPS, AND SMALL-TOWN HOSPITALITY

Sue then led Carly to her own shop, Everything Youngstown, which she and a friend opened just before the pandemic. Full of local pride, the boutique carries Youngstown-themed apparel, gifts, home goods, and souvenirs. Carly says, “It’s a celebration of the village. Definitely stop by while you’re in town.”

“IT’S JUST

They made a quick window stop at Petey’s Treats, Youngstown’s beloved ice cream shop, where locals, especially youth after games, line up for a scoop. Next door, they settled in at the Village Diner for lunch. Carly says, “This is truly the heart of Youngstown. Everyone knows everyone. Even as a visitor, I felt that strong sense of community. As soon as we sat down, the waitress brought Sue her usual hot water without her having to ask. It’s the kind of place where you’re instantly welcomed.”

After lunch, they strolled through one of Youngstown’s three village parks, full of kids playing, gardens blooming, and a peaceful hometown vibe. Carly says it’s “so charming and unique, with gardens and landscaping that reflect the time and effort people put into the place they call home.”

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

PARKS, PINTS, + HISTORY BY THE RIVER

The pair toured Griffon Brewery, a local craft brewery. Carly says, “This is where they brew for all [the company’s] locations and it was pretty cool to tour the facility up close.”

Next door is Youngstown Marketside, a family-owned grocery store filled with everyday staples, fresh-made sandwiches, and incredible home-baked goods. Carly raves, “It’s a lovely, classic hometown grocer that has been family-owned for generations.”

Of course, no visit to Youngstown is complete without a stop at Old Fort Niagara. With reenactments in summer, demonstrations, and a museum rich in history, it’s the village’s biggest draw. Carly recommends visiting the museum before touring the fort to fully experience the site. She says, “Everything there is so fascinating for the history, but also just being on the water, seeing Canada across the river… There’s not a bad view there; sailboats out on the water, it’s a very scenic place.” Definitely a must-visit.

EVENING WIND-DOWN: A LOCAL LEGEND

Before wrapping up their day, Sue and Carly stopped at The Stone Jug, a historic inn and bar that’s been around since the 1800s. “It’s the bar in town,” Carly says, and it was a great place to end the day. Carly says the day with Sue in Youngstown was amazing, and it was incredible to take the time to check out the places that make the town special.

Check out Youngstown’s festivals, races, and community gatherings throughout the year. “There’s always something happening here,” Carly says. Whether you’re into history, outdoor fun, local flavor, or just a little peace and charm, this small town has a big heart—and plenty to discover.

CARLY’S TAKEAWAYS

Carly’s favorite part? “The mix of experiencing the charming, small-town feel, and being so close to the water is just so special and magical.”

Top tip for visitors: “Take your time. Don’t just pass through. Youngstown isn’t a 20-minute stop. Take time to explore and fully experience the town. There are so many hidden gems to discover when you give yourself time to do so.”

Do’ Monique, @whatshouldieat
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE MAGIC OF FOOD, DRINK, AND A GOOD INSTAGRAM CONNECTION TO SPARK A REALLIFE FRIENDSHIP. and Emily

Do’Monique (@whatshouldieat_) and Emily (@buffalobeerfluencer) found their friendship in the bottom of oyster shells and IPA glasses. What started as a fun meetup quickly became a genuine bond. Together, they’ve turned Buffalo’s food and drink scene into a playground full of flavor, good vibes, and unforgettable local finds.

We sat down with these two foodies to talk fall favorites, hidden gems, and lessons they’ve learned from each other.

Try, Try Again

Do’Monique: My motto is “try anything three times before deciding if you like it.” Duck is a perfect example. The first time I had duck wings, it was too rubbery. The second time, I didn’t like the sides. The third time, at Billy Club, was perfect. The Rohan Duck Breast with pancetta, beets, mushrooms, and cherries is still one of my favorite dishes.

Beer & Balance

Emily: I love walking. A 30-minute walk to a brewery sounds like a perfect day. Getting steps in before and after a few beers helps me feel energized instead of sluggish. Buffalo’s neighborhoods like Hertel, Elmwood, and Allentown are lovely for walking.

Also, non-alcoholic beers have been a game changer. I’ll start with a hazy IPA and then switch to a non-alcoholic one.

The Instagram

Oyster Origin Story

Emily:I honestly don’t remember who followed who first, but I saw Do’Monique posting all this amazing food. She kept sharing oysters, which I’d never tried before. After following each other for a bit, I sent her a DM about meeting up. I wanted her to teach me how to eat oysters. We met at Perla and the seafood was amazing.

Do’Monique: Emily hit me up about trying oysters, so we met at Perla for their seafood happy hour. We ordered oysters, shrimp, and pizza. It was a great first meetup.

About Each Other

Emily: She’s adventurous with food and intentional about supporting diverse businesses. I really admire that.

Do’Monique: Emily’s consistency stands out. She’s thoughtful and intentional with her content. We once talked about goals, and mine was consistency. She’s nailed it.

Emily: Spoke & Dagger Café on Hertel is my go-to for morning coffee. I love their seasonal cold brew with cold foam. It’s the perfect spot to get some work done or read.

For football Sundays, Cole’s on Elmwood is where you’ll find me. I get the Buffalo combo platter — beef on weck, five medium extra crispy wings, and fries — with a fresh IPA or Blue Light.

I’m also excited for the new Chandler Street Breweries in Black Rock. Looks like it’s going to be an amazing spot.

Do’Monique: I’ve been a regular at Mike’s Steakhouse on Bailey for over 20 years. Medium wings, extra saucy and extra crispy, are my favorite.

On Wednesdays, Champions Sports Bar on Wehrle has 75-cent wings. Their hot honey wings are the best. There’s something healing about hot wings on a chilly fall day.

Caribbean Taste on 27 Chandler won me over with their curry chicken pastelito and sesame chicken with rice. And El Punto Boricua on Elmwood is a must. Their Pollo Asado and Bistec Encebollado come with heaping sides, and I always pick tostones. The portions are huge enough for two meals.

Emily: I’m inspired by Ciara and Sue Morreale, the mother-daughter owners of HerStory and HerKitchen on Hertel. They offer plant-based and Blue Zone cooking classes, and their non-alcoholic drinks are thoughtfully curated.

Ultimate Comforts

Emily: Soup is my comfort food, thanks to my grandma. I love spicy pork ramen from Sato or homemade Thai coconut curry. I didn’t used to like darker beers like stouts, but lately I enjoy sharing a bottle with friends or my boyfriend for a

bones on chilly nights. White chili with toppings, served with cornbread or rice, is a favorite. Before Khari’s Cafe closed, their Soul Bowl was amazing. Now, Drunken Noodles with Chicken Wings from Tiny Thai does the trick. When the fall breeze hits, I grab hot apple cider and sometimes add North Ridge’s Forbidden Apple Cherry Brandy to spice it up.

The Supper Club Dream and Hosting Fall with Flavor

I’ve loved hosting themed parties since I was young. Starting the What Should I Eat Supper & Cookbook was a way to create a space where people can try new restaurants and recipes, meet new people, and celebrate Black and POC chefs and cuisines. I want to shine a light on their incredible food and culture.

For a cozy fall menu, I’d make chicken breasts stuffed with spinach, cheese, cream cheese, and artichoke, topped with a cream sauce. I’d pair it with Riesling or, if I’m not in a wine mood, lemonade, which is my go-to drink.

I love pumpkin everything, especially pumpkin beers. I’d make a beer-braised beef pot roast using a Märzen or fall beer, paired with Pumpkinville Latte from Ellicottville Brewing. It’s a pumpkin beer with coffee notes and absolutely incredible.

Food as Community Glue

I’m reading The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs, and it talks about how diverse businesses on a street are essential. Trying food in neighborhoods I don’t usually visit helps me discover new people and understand different Buffalo communities.

Do’Monique: Anthony Bourdain said that meals make society. Sharing experiences at hidden gems or “hole in the wall” spots can boost the restaurant and the community. I’ve found some of the best Thai, Dominican, Puerto Rican food, and wings in unexpected places, and I make it my mission to highlight those spots.

“TALKING TO HER FELT LIKE CATCHING UP WITH AN OLD FRIEND. WE’RE JUST TWO GIRLS WHO HAVE PASSIONS FOR THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE SCENE.”
