Where Passion Meets Possibility

As the premier catering service in Rochester, family-owned and operated Food by DeLeo Catering is in the business of creating unforgettable culinary experiences. Jason DeLeo started the business 23 years ago, and if anything, he and his wife, Nicole, along with their son, Antonio, are only getting started.

Antonio is Food by DeLeo’s Executive Chef, and he and his father are both graduates of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), one of the most prestigious culinary schools in the world. Antonio has worked at Michelin star restaurants and brings passion to the plate. DeLeo’s Sous Chef, Dave Degroat, is also a CIA alum, rounding out the team with strength, technique, and precision.

With Julia Nuccitelli as the Culinary Events Coordinator and Nicole as co-owner and lead administrator, Food by DeLeo focuses on family while prioritizing exceptional world-class service for its customers. They have a 10,000 square-foot building in the heart of Rochester including two 3,500 square-foot kitchens, as well as a pizza trailer, a taco truck, and a 24-foot mobile kitchen.

“We bring the restaurant to you.”
“If it’s not on the menu, we’ll make it anyway.”

A Fully Customizable Experience

When it comes to picking a catering service for an event, the choice is very personal for the customer. Whether the occasion is a high school graduation, a corporate event, or a wedding serving hundreds of guests a plated dinner, Food by DeLeo makes every experience seamless, memorable, and delicious.

Above all, Jason and Antonio prioritize professionalism and flexibility, ensuring the customer’s needs are met from the moment they submit an inquiry all the way through the event’s execution.

Customization is key, Antonio says. A quick visit to DeLeo’s website (foodbydeleo.com) reveals dozens of appetizers, several options for plated dinners, including vegetarian and vegan options, full buffet menus, desserts, and much more. However, if a customer is looking for a type of cuisine or a dish not listed on their website’s menu, Jason, Antonio, and Dave guarantee a personalized menu.

Weddings are Food by DeLeo’s “bread and butter” (pun intended). The team understands the emotional, financial, and time commitments involved in creating that magical day. In addition to the two kitchens in DeLeo’s 550 Bernard Street building, a private room is devoted to tastings before a wedding. Jason says that when it comes to sharing the menu with their customers, “We don’t want any surprises.” Couples can schedule an evening in which Jason, Antonio, and Dave prepare the wedding’s entire menu to ensure every detail is perfect.

Food by DeLeo is excited to announce that it has recently obtained its New York State on-premises liquor license in Rochester, NY. Beginning this fall, the farm-to-table culinary team will offer curated beer, wine, and spirit pairings at both private and public events—elevating the catering experience to a full-service, dine-in level. This new offering paves the way for intimate tastings, winepaired dinners, and venue-hosted events featuring thoughtful beverage pairings—all under the same roof of impeccable food and hospitality that Food by DeLeo has built its reputation on.

The team stresses the importance of getting to know their customers. As classically French-trained chefs, Jason, Antonio, and Dave have mastered flavor profiles and can cater to any palate. From traditional Italian staples to Pakistani-inspired dishes, the DeLeo chefs deliver a world-class menu that goes above and beyond.

Additionally, everything that DeLeo serves is homemade. From the perfectly leavened dough for their wood fire pizzas to a red wine demi-glace that takes three days to make, attention is in the details. They source local produce and meats whenever possible, with a few favorites including mushrooms from The Fun Guys Inc., organic microgreens and lettuce from Rochester Microgreens, and fresh fish from Captain Jim’s.

The best part? With their mobile kitchen, Food by DeLeo can offer exceptional service and mouthwatering flavors at nearly any venue, giving the customer incredible flexibility and invites creativity in both location and cuisine. If there are any doubts about what the team is capable of in this space, sweep away doubts – Jason, Antonio, and Dave have served a plated dinner for 500 guests out of the mobile kitchen without missing a beat.

Passion, Teamwork & Possibility

Such motivation for excellence is fueled by the customer. Jason and Antonio agree that creating an authentic experience for their clientele is paramount. They love to work with self-described “foodies” who put their trust in the DeLeo team to build a menu and provide the highest level of hospitality.

Antonio says, “A chef puts their heart on a plate,” and it is that passion to serve and create experiences that drives Food by DeLeo every day. Since Antonio returned to Rochester in 2022 to join his dad in the family business, they have seen exponential growth each year and have no plans to slow down. It is not uncommon to work two weeks straight through, they say, but Antonio says, “You don’t do this grind unless you love it.”

With such opportunity comes the promise to maintain their DeLeo standard of excellence, which is a team effort. For every catered event, whether it be a small birthday party or a wedding with several hundred guests, either Jason, Antonio, or Dave will be present. Julia and Nicole work diligently to schedule all inquiries and tastings, and coordinate all details besides food, such as linens and tables as desired. Everyone has a role, and as Jason asserts, “We can’t do it without each other.”

Beyond maintaining their packed schedule, Food by DeLeo gives back to their neighborhood and the city. Bringing meals to community spaces and rehabilitation centers, and donating a percentage of sales during the holiday season to organizations such as Toys for Tots, they are focused on the “community model” and believe in extending a helping hand whenever possible.

Looking ahead, the team is excited to continue growing and serving Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. For those interested in Food by DeLeo’s services, Jason recommends reaching out 12-18 months prior to a wedding, and 4-8 weeks before graduations, celebrations, or corporate events.

Often, guests will ask where they can get DeLeo’s delectable food outside of an event. For now, Jason, Antonio, and team don’t have a brick-and-mortar location, but when asked if that could be in the future, Jason says, “Keep an eye out.” With such passion comes possibility.

SIMPLE fallPLEASURES

There’s a hidden path in the village of Honeoye Falls where the woods kiss the creek, and the sun beams through in just the right spots. Golden light bounces off the changing leaves, painting a scene that feels like apple crisp brushed across the trees.

As summer winds down and autumn makes its entrance, locals savor the lingering warmth while embracing light-knit sweater weather. The key to welcoming this transition lies in simplicity.

During any season of change, I find myself drawn to simple joys—moments of care and quiet gratitude. Change is often hard to describe, but through experience, we learn how to give it words.

Some simple things I love to experience include scenic outdoor spots with delicious bites, taking easy hikes, and browsing local shops for the latest autumn trends.

Honeoye Falls Rotary Park is a local hidden gem—inviting a gentle stroll in nature. Listen to the creek streaming through the village and find a quiet log to sit on, soaking in the silence and solitude.

There’s nothing quite like cozy outdoor seating—whether you're eating, sipping, or just soaking in the view. Star Cider in Canandaigua is a must-visit. They serve craft ciders, cocktails, and eats in a space that feels like a giant backyard. It's got a laid-back, family-friendly vibe and tons of events happening all the time. It’s an easy and fun gathering spot. My favorite? Their boozy root beer floats—it’s like a dessert in liquid form.

As summer fades, it's always fun to refresh your wardrobe or add a new accessory. I love stopping by Figgy Studio & Shop on Park Ave. The moment you walk in, you’ll want to say, “SO CUTE!” From handmade jewelry and quirky stationery to vibrant clothing, this shop is a celebration of artisan-made fashion and local creativity.

In times of transition, simple pleasures and small joys become soul-soothing. Take a walk. Browse a boutique. Sip something fizzy. And wherever you are—Rochester or beyond—take in the simple, yet meaningful beauty around you. These everyday experiences are gifts you never knew you needed.

REFLECTIONS FROM LOCAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Let’s be real. Being a woman in business is equal parts chaos, coffee, and courage. Some days you’re crushing it. Other days you’re questioning everything. But then someone thanks you, buys what you’re selling, or says you lit a spark in them, and your whole day turns around.

Look for these little pieces of insight throughout the Women in Business section. They’re reminders of what we’ve learned, what we’re still figuring out, and what we’d tell our younger selves with love, laughter, and maybe a little side-eye.

A BOUTIQUE BUILT ON LOVE, LEGACY, & CLOTHES THAT FEEL LIKE HOME

Since 2002, The Enchanted Rose Garden in Penfield has been more than just a boutique. Run by a passionate, all-women team, it’s a cozy spot where neighbors become friends, customers feel like family, and the people behind the counter truly love what they do. What started with Eileen Wrona and her mom has grown into a multi-generational labor of love, now carried on by Eileen’s daughter Jessie.

The boutique prides itself on old-fashioned customer service, giving every visitor individual attention. From stylish clothing including popular Judy Blue jeans, to shoes, accessories, jewelry, and bath and body products, there’s always something special waiting to be discovered. You’ll also find home décor, pantry treats, a delightful baby and kids section, party goods, and local gifts. Plus, plenty of cheeky surprises—funny adult-themed tea towels and quirky mugs that always bring a smile. And their candles? A customer favorite for adding warmth and comfort to any home.

Every Sunday and Thursday evening, Eileen, Jessie, and their team host Facebook Live shopping events where they model clothes on real bodies in real sizes. “We’re just being ourselves,” Jessie says. “No fancy filters or models here. Just real women trying on sweaters, scarves, and everything in between.” These shows have become a cozy, friendly way for customers to connect, laugh, and discover new favorite pieces.

The boutique thrives on personal connection. Customers often stop by or shop online, with curbside pickup and nationwide shipping making it easy to get their favorite finds no matter where they are.

For Eileen, the boutique is about more than selling clothes. “My mom helped me start this place, and now with Jessie here, it feels like the circle is complete. We’re sharing stories, laughter, and a little piece of our family with everyone who walks through our doors.”

When asked what advice she’d give other boutiques, Eileen says, “Embrace your unique story and build genuine relationships. People want real connections, trust, and a sense of community. Be authentic, show the real people behind your brand, and engage customers in meaningful ways. That’s what helps a small business thrive.”

“We’re not just selling clothes, we’re sharing stories, laughter, and a little piece of our family with everyone who walks through our doors.”

“We want every customer to leave feeling like the baddest babe in the room!”

AUTUMN ELEVATE YOUR

As the air turns and pumpkin spice begins its seasonal reign, it’s time to swap out your sundresses and sandals for cozy knits, structured layers, and rich textures. Whether you’re revamping your closet or just looking for some fresh outfit inspiration, these fall style tips and curated looks will keep you feeling confident, cozy, and on trend all season long.

Master the Art of Layering

Fall weather can be unpredictable. That’s where layering becomes your secret style weapon. Start with a foundation—a fitted tee, turtleneck, or lightweight sweater—and build from there. Think oversized cardigans, vests, blazers or classic trench coats. Kyla was able to show a vary of styles in this format and even used some pieces more than once! Layering isn’t just functional—it’s fashionable.

Play With Rich, Moody Tones

Embrace the earthy palette that fall is known for: rust, olive, mustard, browns, and burgundy. These hues add warmth and sophistication to any look and pair beautifully together. Kyla incorporated these tones into her styling at the boutique, with the occasional pop of color to blend it all together.

Try this: Swap your basic blazer for a camel or tan option. Pair it with dark denim and gold accessories for an elevated neutral look.

Reimagine Your Summer Favorites

Don’t box up your summer wardrobe just yet. Some pieces can easily transition into fall with the right styling. As seen on Kyla, midi skirts can pair beautifully with chunky knits or unstructured tops and boots. A summer base + fall texture + layered warmth = chic transitional outfit.

Lean Into Statement Outerwear

Outerwear isn’t just about practicality – it can pull your whole outfit together! This fall, make your jacket the main character. In the trench outfit, Kyla uses the coat as the main statement piece – and it pulls the entire outfit together.

Closet Tip: A well-fitting leather (or vegan leather) jacket instantly adds edge and polish to any outfit.

Accessorize With Intention

Fall accessories add texture and personality. Swap straw bags for suede crossbodies, trade in beachy jewelry for chunky gold hoops, and layer up with scarves in cashmere, plaid, or even animal prints. And don’t forget about your head - hats are underrated in fall. A wide-brim fedora or knit beanie adds both function and flair to your look.

Footwear that Transitions

Footwear can make or break a fall outfit. This season, bring out the boots—ankle, knee-high, lug sole, or westerninspired. Pair them with everything from midi-dresses to oversized trouser pants.

Trending now:

• Chunky loafers with socks

• Cowboy boots with flowy skirts or denim

• Combat boots with leggings and oversized sweaters

Play With Proportions

Fall is the perfect time to experiment with silhouette. Balance a bulky knit with slim trousers or wear wide-leg pants with a fitted bodysuit. Oversized pieces are having a major moment, so don’t be afraid to size up on jackets or sweaters for that intentionally relaxed look.

Fall fashion is all about embracing change—of seasons, styles, and mindset. As the leaves shift, let your wardrobe do the same. Invest in key pieces, get creative with layering, and most of all, have fun expressing your personal style! This is the season of cozy confidence and elevated ease, after all!

Find these pieces and more at Second Look Boutique in the South Wedge, Rochester NY. Learn more at www.secondlookstyling.com. You can also reach out to Kyla for styling services at www.itskylanotkayla.com

INSIGHTS from the top

A Conversation with The NXT Level Collective

The NXT Level Collective has become a powerful force in the Rochester business community. Can you tell us what makes this collective so unique?

At our core, we’re built on the belief that women thrive in community—not competition. What sets us apart is our inclusivity. We intentionally welcome all women in business—from non-profit founders and first-time entrepreneurs to seasoned executives and industry leaders. If you’re a woman building something with purpose, there’s a seat for you at our table.

What is your community built around and how does this show up in practice?

There are 3 pillars that are at the foundation of everything we do.

Education: We offer real value—workshops, masterminds, and actionable resources that help women move forward, no matter their stage of business.

Philanthropy: Giving back and lifting others. We believe in using our collective success to drive change and support the broader community.

Social Events: Our gatherings aren’t just fun—they’re designed for authentic connection. We create space for women to celebrate wins, navigate challenges, and build relationships that last.

You recently hosted your first awards gala. What was that experience like?

The Spring 2025 “Determined to Rise” Awards was nothing short of magical. It was our first, but it felt like a legacy event from the very beginning. We honored women across all sectors—from those just launching a dream to those leading non-profit missions and scaling established companies. What made it so special was how personal it felt. It wasn’t about titles or accolades—it was about impact. It’s quickly become one of our most cherished traditions, and we’re already planning how to make the next one even more meaningful.

For women who are interested in joining, what does membership look like?

We offer four levels of membership, from free access to our wider community, all the way up to our exclusive tier for industry leaders. Each level is intentionally designed to meet women where they are, and provide support, resources, and access accordingly. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re looking to lead from the top, there’s a place for every woman to grow, contribute, and thrive.

What’s the big-picture mission of NXT Level?

We’re not just building businesses—we’re building women who build legacies. Our mission is to create a nurturing, innovative space where women can evolve both personally and professionally. It’s about real growth, deep support, and a community that celebrates every stage of the journey.

STORIES BEHIND THE PLATE

with @TableforOne_Rochester Stone Tolan Working Class Coffee

Who is Table for One Rochester?

Erica Larsen launched Table for One in 2018 to merge her passions for food and photography. With a background shaped by both creative and analytical influences, she uses storytelling to spotlight local, familyowned food and beverage businesses across Rochester and the Finger Lakes. Passionate about the roots of food, Erica highlights dishes that tell a story, from holiday cookies to farmto-table meals, while helping others discover the local food scene and special events in the region.

Each season brings a new rhythm and a gentle shift. Autumn welcomes in cooler air, golden leaves, and invites us to slow down and savor. It encourages us to settle in as we gather with loved ones and linger a little longer around the table.

For local foodie, Erica Larsen, autumn is the perfect season to celebrate the heart of our region’s food community. As a devoted supporter of local, family-owned businesses, Erica shares her passion with the community by dining at local restaurants and sharing her experience on social media @TableforOne_Rochester.

For more than seven years, Erica has explored everything from beloved hometown staples to hidden gems that define the area’s rich food culture including restaurants, events, and supper clubs. She offers insight on supporting farm-to-table dining and recounts a few unforgettable stories along the way. To top it off, she collaborated with local chef and coowner of Wildflour, Taylor Wilde, to share a seasonal recipe that captures the cozy, communal spirit of fall.

The Resurgence of Supper Clubs: Why This Timeless Tradition is Making a Comeback

While the term supper club may be new to some, the concept dates back to the 1930s, when these gatherings became popular after Prohibition, offering a more refined dining experience. Today, supper clubs are making a comeback as people seek more authentic, intimate social experiences, especially ones that combine fresh food, great drinks, and good company at a slower, more intentional pace.

Working Class Coffee’s monthly supper club, hosted by chef and owner, Derrick Deporter, offers exactly that. Featuring favorite dishes, seasonal ingredients, and thoughtful wine pairings, events provide a unique culinary experience. For Erica, supper clubs like this are the perfect blend of her passions: food and photography. Typically set in a cozy, communal setting, these fixed multi-course meals give guests a chance to connect—with each other, the chef, and sometimes even the farmers or sommeliers involved. Chefs often share the story behind each course, creating a sense of community and celebrating regional, seasonal ingredients. For Erica, it’s also been an inspiring way to deepen her understanding of food.

“THE FARM-TO-TABLE MOVEMENT IS A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE THE REGION’S BOUNTIFUL HARVEST AND OFFERS BENEFITS FAR BEYOND WHAT’S ON THE PLATE.” - Erica

Eating with Intention: Fresh, Local & Purposeful

While traditional supper clubs focused on comfort food, today’s versions often lean into farm-to-table values, connecting diners with local food culture and the importance of seasonal ingredients. Chefs work directly with local farmers, wineries, and producers to design themed menus based on what’s fresh and available. Meals pair culinary creativity with storytelling, highlighting where food comes from and why it matters. Local venues such as Good Luck, New York Kitchen, and Hurd Orchards regularly host farm-to-table dinners and luncheons that showcase the region’s best flavors.

By sourcing local, in-season ingredients, these meals are fresher, more flavorful, and often more nutritious. They also support local farms, boost the regional economy, and reduce the environmental impact of long-distance transport and packaging. Seasonal menus not only highlight ingredients at their peak but also help diners discover new dishes tied to a specific time and place. At its heart, farm-to-table is about connection—between people, food, and community.

Some of Erica’s favorite experiences include the Rochester Supper Club, Seasonal Pantry, and the one-of-a-kind Outstanding in the Field, a “restaurant without walls” that brings dining to the source. These events occur in locations like farms, vineyards, orchards, beaches, and barns, where guests gather at long communal tables to share a meal with farmers and chefs.

WHAT IS A SUPPER CLUB?

A UNIQUE, INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE THAT COMBINES THE ELEMENTS OF A RESTAURANT AND A SOCIAL GATHERING WITH COMMUNAL SEATING AND FIXED MENUS, OFTENTIMES SERVING FRESH, LOCAL FOOD.

“I am so grateful for all the experiences I’ve had and for the chefs and sommeliers who have opened up their kitchens, businesses, and hearts to me. I’ve learned so much about different ingredients and flavor profiles as well as how the climate impacts the flavors of seasonal harvest grown in our region.”

ROMANO BEAN & CREAMY DILL SALAD Fall-Inspired

SERVES 6-8

For the salad:

16 oz bag of Farro, boiled for 14 minutes in salted water; strain and toss with olive oil, chill in fridge

10 - 14 oz fresh beans, quickly blanched and sliced to preferred size

2 bunch kale (lacinato or whatever you prefer)

1 head radicchio, washed (I like to cut them to the same size as the beans)

Sunflower seeds, roasted and salted

Breadcrumbs (You can throw your favorite croutons in the food processor!)

Pecorino Romano

For the dressing:

8 oz mayo (I like Duke’s)

.5 oz fresh dill, chopped

.4 oz pecorino romano, grated

1 tablespoon heavy cream

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon whole grain mustard

1 teaspoon water

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

¼ teaspoon sugar

Mix in a bowl and reserve for assembly. Makes about 10 oz dressing. Add half to the salad just before serving and taste before you serve (You can always add more!) Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl. I like to mix some breadcrumbs into the salad as well as grate some pecorino right into the mix and garnish with both on top. As always, taste and adjust to your liking. Chilled serving bowls and fresh cracked black pepper on top is always a nice touch!

Best Friends, Big Laughs, and the Espresso Martini Mission Taking Over Rochester

You know those friendships where everything just clicks? Where laughter comes easy, selfies are second nature, and even spilled drinks turn into core memories? Meet Natalie Rae and Breezy Sloth — Rochester besties who’ve turned their shared obsession with espresso martinis into a citywide sip-and-review series that’s equal parts cocktail critique and feel-good friendship goals.

They call it “Sip Happens,” and what started as a spontaneous spin-off idea has grown into a joyful ritual — one martini at a time.

The inspiration? French onion soup. (Naturally.)

“A couple years ago I was reviewing French onion soups on Instagram, and people loved it,” Breezy explains. “One night, Natalie and I were out — doing what we do best — drinking espresso martinis. And we just thought, why not turn this into a series too?”

From that very first buzzed brainstorm, “Sip Happens” was born. No pressure. No pretension. Just two stylish, sharpwitted women documenting their martini missions across the city — foam, beans, fails, and all.

NATALIE RAE
“It started as a joke. Now we can’t stop ordering espresso martinis everywhere we go.”

The Anatomy of the Perfect ‘Tini

Of course, once you commit to the bit, the standards get serious. So what makes the ultimate espresso martini?

Breezy says, “For me, it’s got to be sweet and creamy, a hint of vanilla, light on the coffee flavor. Foam is non-negotiable — it makes the drink — and it’s got to be topped with three espresso beans. Always. Beanless ‘tinis are a red flag.”

Natalie, of course, has a totally different take, saying, “I’m a coffee girl first, martini drinker second! I take my coffee with cream, no sugar, always. So when it comes to an espresso martini, I need it to taste like coffee, not a milkshake. It should be unapologetically coffee-forward. Think less dessert, more after-dinner power move.”

Her ideal ‘tini is bold, rich, and creamy, but balanced. “I want that just-right ratio of espresso to cream where the coffee still shines but the cream smooths it out like velvet. Never sweet. If I wanted dessert, I’d order it. And I usually do. I’m also a big gluten-free dessert lover.”

That said, there is one place where they agree: “The three espresso beans on top are non-negotiable,” Natalie confirms.

“We’re opposites in all the best ways,” Natalie adds. “She’s vanilla and sugar, I’m deep roast and cream. She likes her martinis light and sweet, I want mine strong enough to wake me up and smooth enough to sip slow. It’s why our reviews work — we’re giving both sides of the espresso martini spectrum. You’ll always know whose team you’re on.”

So far, they’ve reviewed over 20 local spots, with wildly different results which they find both delightful and mildly chaotic.

Breezy says, “Every place makes it their own. It’s exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking when you’ve got expectations. That said, our top three right now? Pourin’ Joy, Tin Cup, and Branca in the Basin.”

They’re not stopping there. Breezy says, “We’ve joked about going national with it. A girls’ weekend in NYC? Hitting every espresso martini we can find, responsibly, of course. The options are endless!”

A Friendship with Foam and Sass

While the martinis make for great content, the real magic is their friendship, the kind that lights up a room and never takes itself too seriously. Natalie says, “Our friendship is a perfect blend of laughter, loyalty, silliness, and a little bit of sass. We hype each other up, whether it’s business wins, fitness goals, or the perfect foam on a cocktail.”

That energy translates into their videos, which feel more like watching two sisters riff than a polished influencer duo. Natalie says, “People can tell it’s real. We’re just two best friends having a great time. We love being out and about in Rochester and connecting with people. And others want to be a part of it.”

Their Instagram accounts, @NatalieRaeNY and @Breezyonair, have become go-to follows for local women looking for authentic, fun-loving takes on where to go and what to drink.

But “Sip Happens” has grown beyond reviews. It’s now a way for them to slow down, catch up, and reconnect in the midst of their busy lives.

“Life gets hectic, we’re both entrepreneurs, so setting aside time to laugh and sip something delicious is therapeutic,” Natalie says. “It’s more than just a drink. It’s self-care with a twist.”

Fall Vibes & Favorite Places

When they’re not chasing martinis, the pair leans hard into Rochester’s cozy season. Natalie says, “You’ll probably find us at Schutt’s for warm fried cake donuts. They’re the highlight of fall for me.” Other favorites? Genesee Valley Park for crisp autumn walks along the water, browsing local boutiques like Shop Peppermint, or hitting the Clothesline Art Festival.

And naturally, Panache Consignment and Panache Home, Natalie’s shops, are frequent stops. She says, “We love supporting local artists and makers. That’s a huge part of what we’re about.”

Sip Fails, Sun Disasters, and the Bean Controversy

Of course, no great series is complete without a few unforgettable outtakes. Natalie recalls, “One time, we filmed outside for the lighting — but didn’t realize the sun was baking my phone. It shut off 30 seconds into filming, and we had no clue. We went through the whole review, thought we nailed it, only to find out it never recorded. We just looked at each other and burst out laughing.”

Another time a bar tried to get creative with an orange slice garnish, and she says, “It was all we could taste. We ended up plugging our noses mid-review to see if it helped. Spoiler: it didn’t.” The clip was hilarious but it never made it to the ‘gram. “Some reviews are just for us,” Natalie says with a wink.

Start Your Own Sip Tradition

Asked what advice they’d give readers looking to start their own “Sip Happens” adventure, Natalie doesn’t hesitate, saying, “Do it! Don’t wait for a special occasion. Make time for fun. Pick a theme, set some loose rating criteria, and enjoy it. It’s not about being influencers. It’s about friendship, laughter, and discovering new places together.”

And at its core, that’s what makes this series and this duo so magnetic.

“Being a woman entrepreneur can feel isolating sometimes,” Natalie says. “But having a friendship like ours reminds you that you don’t have to do it all alone. Supporting each other, whether in life or over martinis, is what makes the journey joyful. And the Rochester community has been such a big part of that. We’re grateful to explore it, one sip at a time.”

1 shot of fresh espresso (or cold brew concentrate)

1 shot of Tito’s Vodka

0.75 oz Coffee liqueur Mr. Black

0.5 oz Baileys or a splash of unsweetened oat milk cream (depending on how spicy we are feeling!)

Garnish with 3 espresso beans for good luck!

“These outings are more than just drinks –it’s self-care with a twist.”
- Natalie

LIVINGSTON LIVINGSTON

Small Town Charm. Scenic Wandering.

As summer lake life quiets down, Livingston County transforms into a fall wonderland where the rhythm of local life kicks in. Kids prep for school, families cozy up for chilly nights, and the landscape bursts into fiery hues of red, orange, and gold. It’s the perfect time to hop in the car and take in the variety of great scenery, farms, and farm stands scattered along the way to this gem of a destination.

In this fall feature, we hear from local resident and photographer Gina Horan, owner of Gina Horan Reflections Photography Studio in Hemlock, NY. Through her lens and her love of the land, Gina captures what makes fall in Livingston County so magical.

Nature lovers, you’re in for a treat. Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, pristine watershed lakes untouched by development, offer serene beauty from every angle. Whether you're paddling a kayak, cruising in a small watercraft, or strolling along peaceful trails, the stillness and scenery are unbeatable. And, if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring above or perched proudly in the trees, just as Gina often does while photographing their nests across the area.

In Livonia, fall isn't just a season, it’s a celebration. The Village goes all in for Halloween, with generations of families decorating

historic homes, trick-or-treating, and adding their own flair to the festive fun. Don’t miss the “First Flight” eagle mural in town, a burst of sunset color by artist Justin Suarez that captures the spirit of the season and the majesty of local wildlife.

Pop into Simply Positive, a charming gift shop filled with locally made art and one-of-a-kind wood creations. Right next door, Lake Bistro serves up handmade cinnamon rolls and lattes in an atmosphere as warm as the bread they bake fresh each morning. For a dinner you’ll want to write home about, Ember Wood Fire Grill offers unforgettable wood-fired cuisine inside a historic train station.

Fall is for adventure, and Livingston delivers. Hike the trails around Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, peaceful, untouched, and bursting with color. Or head to Letchworth State Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East,” where waterfalls tumble through glowing forests. If you're lucky, you’ll catch a hot air balloon floating past at sunrise — or better yet, ride one yourself for a memory you’ll never forget.

Come fall, Livingston County isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a place to experience. Breathe it in, photograph it, and let it surprise you.

Shopping, Living, Loving Local

who is bianca?

Cynical optimist. Wise-ass Virgo. Cat mom. Entrepreneur. Rochester native with a soft spot for sarcasm, good coffee, and all things local.

“When you buy local, you’re supporting a real person, not a warehouse algorithm. Rochester is packed with incredible food, drinks, makers, and spaces—so why not invest in your own community?”

- BIANCA

Downtime Activities

Procuring new tchotchkes, spending time with my husband and cats, reading, watching true crime documentaries, hanging with friends and family, and exploring Rochester.

Favorite Season

Fall, winter… I can’t choose one! I want to see leaves change color and I want Hallmark snow outside my window. Plus, it’s prime market season!

ADVICE FOR local vendors starting out:

“Find your people. Follow other vendors online, say hi at events, ask questions. The Rochester maker scene is super supportive. Don’t be afraid to connect. ”

Go-To Coffee Order I love a flavored latte or iced coffee. The french toast latte at Winter Swan is my everything.

My husband and I at the yearly Mortalis + Swiftwater Brewing Luau, one of our favorite summer activities!

It’s no secret that Rochester is synonymous with arts and festivals in WNY, no matter the weather. Bianca Piazza perhaps knows this better than anyone. The face behind @RocOnlyEvents, she tirelessly works to bring together local artisans and vendors for various pop-up events throughout the seasons.

Our Home Team member Kaitlin Donnan sat down with Bianca to chat about the ins and outs of vendor fairs, some of the city’s best spots, and the importance of supporting local.

What inspired you to start RocOnlyEvents? I was (and still am!) a vendor. I started Harsh Astrology during the pandemic because everything felt heavy and serious, and I needed a little laughter (and a lot of sarcasm) to help lighten the mood. As a lifelong astrology nerd, I thought it'd be funny to roast people based on their signs. After a couple of years selling at markets all over Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo, I decided to put my overly organized Virgo brain to the test by running my own events. As a contributor to Unlock the Roc (RIP), I’ve always loved spotlighting what makes this city tick, so RocOnly became the natural next step—bringing artisans and venues together to create events that are fun, thoughtful, and uniquely Rochester.

What happens when you mix local businesses with passionate vendors? I love collaborating with venue owners who aren’t just offering their space: they’re excited to help create something memorable. I’ve been lucky to work with places that go all-in, and we’ve built strong relationships that turn pop-ups into real community events. Some of my favorite partners: ARTISANworks, Iron Smoke Distillery, The Strathallan Hotel, 20 Deep Winery, Star Cider, New York Kitchen, Three Brothers Wineries & Estates, The Old Farm Cafe, and Long Acre Farms.

Vendors and organizers have been a match made in heaven. The market scene here is full of kind, creative, and supportive people.

Sell a visit to the Flower City in 60 seconds. Go! Rochester’s got the energy of a big city with the warmth (and weirdness) of a small town. You’ll find killer food, beautiful parks, some of the best festivals in the state, and a community that shows up for one another. Plus, we throw a pretty great market, if I do say so myself.

Favorite Rochester spots: ARTISANworks - I love it so much I was married there. I see something new every time I walk into the space and I really think it's one of Rochester's best kept secrets. You can't say it's just an art gallery…because it's so much more than that.

Restaurant Good Luck - Always my go-to for a special night out. Great vegetarian options and consistently amazing food.

Winter Swan - Coffee, florals, and fairytale vibes. A dreamy spot for meetings or getting work done.

Turning Point Park - My favorite spot to walk/ride my bike. You get a boardwalk, a forest, and Charlotte Pier all in one go. There is no shortage of beautiful scenery to look at and it's a great workout too!

NOTION – Gift shop meets vintage treasure hunt. Nearly everything is made by local artists, and the owner has a great eye for antiques. We team up each summer for the Northfield Common Creators Fest.

pg. 49 Woven in Pink and Blue: A Meaningful Legacy

Loss is never easy. Sometimes it comes in a sudden, life-altering moment. Other times, it unfolds slowly and painfully. While each experience is different, what remains constant is the impact it leaves behind.

Pregnancy and infant loss is far more common than many realize, affecting as many as one in four women. For some, the loss happens so early on, they may not even know they were pregnant. For others, like local Rochester mom and business owner, Jen Chappell, the loss occurs after fullterm labor and delivery.

Jen and her husband, John, are parents to Judah (14), Brooklyn (12), Parker (7), and Cooper, their third child, whose life ended at 38 weeks.

Jen’s pregnancy was relatively smooth until about 33 weeks, when Jen was told she had “more than normal” amniotic fluid. She remembers, “They told me it was fine. They’d just monitor me a little more closely, and they said it would be okay.”

woven in PINK & BLUE

HOW ONE LOCAL MOTHER HONORED LOSS THROUGH A MEANINGFUL LEGACY BY VIVIEN REED

She began going in for monitoring up to three times a week, and by 38 weeks, induction was scheduled. At her final appointment, they checked Cooper’s heartbeat and performed a routine internal exam. Jen felt him move suddenly but didn’t yet know it would be the last time.

She was then moved to another room, where they placed a heartbeat monitor on her belly. This time, they couldn’t find a heartbeat, a shock Jen wasn’t prepared for. Jen and John later learned that Cooper died due to a knot in his umbilical cord. The internal exam likely startled him, triggering a burst of movement. The intense movement Jen felt was Cooper fighting for his life.

“That moment changed me forever,” she says. “The person who walked out of that room was not the same person who walked in. I will grieve for him for the rest of my life. And yet, I also know he changed me, how I see the world, how I love, and ultimately, he made me better.”

"What started as one bracelet became a movement — a way for grieving families to feel seen, to speak their baby’s name, and to know they are not alone."

Grief calls to grief, and in the months that followed, Jen looked for meaningful ways to honor Cooper’s memory and express her sorrow. She discovered October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and she decided to make a pink and blue friendship bracelet to wear throughout the entire month.

She says, “I wore it all month long. And anytime someone asked me about it, I would tell them about Cooper. The bracelet brought me comfort. It gave me a way to talk about our baby and share our story.”

The following year, she invited friends and family to join her in making and wearing pink and blue bracelets. Word

spread quickly; more and more people wanted bracelets. By 2019, volunteers began pouring in from all over the country, each wanting to support grieving families and bring awareness to silent heartbreak.

From that outpouring, The Pink and Blue Awareness Project began alongside The Cooper Project, which sells personalized items like necklaces and mugs to help honor lost babies.

Today, The Pink and Blue Awareness Project is a nationwide effort. Since 2017, more than 95,000 bracelets have been distributed. With support from sponsors and volunteers, the organization sends out around 35,000 bracelets each October to families,

hospitals, and businesses. One of Jen’s favorite parts of the process is that each bracelet shipment includes a baby memorial card. Each volunteer adds a baby’s name to the card, a powerful tribute to lives that, though brief, are never forgotten.

Loss is hard to talk about. It’s deeply personal. For those on the outside, it can be hard to know what to say. One of the most healing things for Jen was being able to talk about Cooper and acknowledge that her loss was real.

She says, “I realized right away that pregnancy loss, though so common, is still taboo. I didn’t like that. And I wanted to change it.”

That’s exactly what The Pink and Blue Awareness Project aims to do: to create space for mothers and families to share their stories openly, to be seen and heard in their grief, and to connect with others who understand.

Jen’s biggest hope is that no family ever feels alone. “I want to give grieving mothers and families hope,” she says.

For Jen’s family and for thousands of others, October is more than just another month. It’s a time of remembrance, a time to honor. She says, “I want October to be known for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness. I want to proudly remember my son Cooper and all the babies who are no longer here.”

To volunteer or support the project, visit THECOOPERPROJECT.ORG

Wearing a bracelet or volunteering time may seem like small acts, but in times of grief, they can mean everything. It says You are not alone.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE

To anyone walking through the pain of pregnancy or infant loss, Jen offers this message: “You’re going to get through this. It may feel like you’ll never feel normal again, that joy or hope will never return, but you will make it through. And your baby will never be forgotten.”

A Note from Our Editors:

While we typically focus on uplifting content, we believe it's just as important to create space for stories that speak to the quiet, often unspoken moments of grief. Pregnancy and infant loss is one of those deeply personal experiences that many walk through in silence. By sharing this story, we hope to offer comfort, understanding, and a reminder that no one is truly alone. If it brings even a moment of connection or peace to someone who needs it, then we’ve done our part.
