According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. AI-assisted scams against seniors It’s not that scammers are getting smarter, but they have a new tool now: AI, artificial intelligence. For our own protection, we need to learn about AI and how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

If you’ve posted any pictures on social media, take them down.

Make it your task for January to remove any photos you’ve put up, especially if -- heaven forbid -- there are snaps of your children and grandchildren.

If you routinely attach photos in emails to friends and family, and if they tend to post those on their own social media, ask them to remove the pictures. If they don’t comply, stop sending them photos. I know, that’s harsh. But you have to protect yourself and those dear to you.

Photos are the tip of the iceberg, however. Consider what scammers can do with innocent information about a vacation you took. They can personalize their scam against you and pretend to have met you on that trip. If you’ve posted the names of family members, or even the name of your dog, they can pretend to actually know you. It will sound so innocent if they then ask for your home address or the correct spelling of your name so they can send you a souvenir.

It gets worse: Scammers can clone voice samples they find online. If you’ve posted a video of a teen grandchild, scammers can convert that into a fake video call wherein the child appears to be upset and asks for help, which is another version of the grandparent scam.

One of the best sites I’ve found to learn about AI scams is McAfee’s Guide to Deepfake Scams and AI Voice Spoofing at www.mcafee. com/learn/a-guide-to-deepfake-scams-and-ai-voice-spoofing.

Also go online and search for “how scammers use AI against seniors.”

BRINGING MYSTERY TO LIFE:

Sophie Houseman’s Immersive Shows Captivate Batavia B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

In early November, a cast of literary characters came to life in an interactive murder mystery show at the Richmond Memorial Library. Lady Macbeth, Sherlock Holmes, Alice from Wonderland, and other famous figures from classic books found themselves embroiled in a murder mystery after encountering a magical book that can alter stories. The show, entitled Murder in the Library, was written and directed by Batavia resident, Sophie Houseman.

Houseman moved to Batavia after graduating from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in communications and musical theater. Originally from the United Kingdom, she came to Western New York to study at Monroe Community College. She’s been an active part of the local theater scene ever since, participating in numerous productions with the Batavia Players, an entirely volunteer theater group based in the Main St. 56 Theater. Murder in the Library is the third murder mystery show written and directed by Houseman.

Then, audience members take on the role of detective, interrogating the characters considered suspects and deciding who they think the murderer is before the killer is revealed in a concluding scene. The result is an immersive, interactive theater experience like no other.

Houseman’s first murder mystery, Murder at the Carnival, began at the Main St. 56 Theater and sent the audience out to nearby local businesses and organizations to interrogate the characters. For her second, Murder at the Café, Houseman wrote a show that could take place in the Eden Café while about 25 guests ate dinner courses between each scene. To accommodate the smaller venue, the cast was just three characters. The show quickly sold out of tickets for the single planned performance, so they added two more nights.

Due to the success of her first two shows, the Richmond Memorial Library initially approached Houseman to create a show specifically for the library space. For Murder in the Library, Houseman had to consider how to make the best use of the space. “The cast is moving in and around the audience, they come up the aisle, they enter from the back of the room,” Houseman said. “We’re using every inch of that room that we can.” The library itself became the set Houseman had to work with. “There’s no special lighting or sound effects beyond what we can create at the library,” she said. “We’re not bringing the theater to the library. The library is becoming the theater.”

Houseman will write and direct another murder mystery in 2026, which will start at the Main St. 56 Theater and move to local businesses. She also hopes to write more interactive shows for unique community spaces and see more people enjoying theater in Batavia. “There’s plenty of opportunities for people to do theater,” Houseman said. “There’s also a lot of opportunity for people to come and see high quality theater. A lot of people think you have to go to Buffalo or Rochester for that, but it’s right here in Batavia too.”

Murder mysteries are challenging to write because the audience is invited to pick apart every line to determine a character’s potential motives for the murder. “You have to make sure every character has a motive and every character can be viewed as a suspect,” Houseman said. “But then you also have to make sure you’re not pointing everyone in the direction of the obvious murderer.” For Murder in the Library, Houseman had the additional challenge of keeping each character true to their original works while also making sense in the context of her show.

While Houseman always hopes at least a few people solve it, part of the fun is for it to be a true mystery that stumps at least some of the audience. It can be hard to see her work analyzed so deeply, but at the same time, it’s a kind of feedback few writers get from their audience. “It’s interesting to see how people interpret text so differently, which I don’t think you get when people watch a regular play,” Houseman said. “You might hear a couple of comments afterward about what they thought and how it was done, but murder mysteries really invite people to talk about how they view it differently.”

It’s not just the audience who engages more deeply with the script, but the cast does too, which is also a big part of the fun for Houseman, who says, “They dive into the words they are saying on an even deeper level than I ever intended them to be. They’re finding things that enhance the motive that I just intended as a funny little quip. The collaborative effort is amazing.”

Here are a few ways to maximize his safety while celebrating.

Talk to your family. Sit down with them and explain that decorations, food and treats need to be placed out of your dog’s reach.

Reinforce basic obedience skills. Work with Max on recall commands and behavioral training.

Stay on schedule. The holidays are super busy, but it is important to keep Max on his regular daily schedule of walks, feeding and training.

Store dog food and treats securely. The pantry often sits open during holiday preparations. Make sure Max can’t get into his dog food and overeat, causing serious complications like bloat.

Create a “safe room” for Max during holiday events. Parties, dinners and the fun of unwrapping gifts can all overstimulate a young dog. During the height of festivities, place Max in a quiet room with his favorite toys and bedding. When the wrapping paper is cleaned up, bring Max out to greet everyone.

Note behavioral patterns for later. Keep an eye on how Max behaves during this strange, exciting time of year. Is he reactive toward strangers or shiny, unfamiliar things? Do you have a difficult time getting him to obey commands? Resolve to work with Max on these issues after the holidays.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

Lynch Syndrome Patient Is Unsure Whether To Stop Colonoscopy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old female who is currently on biannual infusions for osteoporosis and high cholesterol. In 2018, I was diagnosed with Lynch syndrome with an MSH6 deviation. The genetic testing was done after I had breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and a colectomy for three years in a row. Yearly colonoscopies have been included in my preventive care.

In 2022, during my colonoscopy, I experienced excessive vagal tone and needed atropine to restore my heart beat. Since this time, I have been given Robinul prior to the procedure, which has prevented another incident of bradycardia. My gastroenterologist isn’t recommending any more colonoscopies due to this cardiac issue and my age.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily.

These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility.

Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright.

Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

ANSWER: People with Lynch syndrome are at an increased risk for a variety of cancers, especially of the colon but also other parts of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, pancreas and bile duct). People with Lynch syndrome are also at an increased risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer (in women), prostate cancer (in men), and other cancers including skin and brain cancer. Gastroenterologists know that cancer of the colon can arise without a polyp.

For people with Lynch syndrome, a genetic analysis is recommended.

The exact gene may help determine the optimal beginning time and frequency of a colonoscopy. The decision of when to discontinue screening via a colonoscopy is not agreed upon by experts, but clearly when the risk of performing a colonoscopy is greater than the expected benefit, it’s time to stop. This is less about reaching a certain age than it is about underlying medical conditions.

You have a slow heart rate during sedation for the colonoscopy, and it sounds as though your doctors have found a way to do the colonoscopy safely. Your lifetime risk of colon cancer, given your MSH carrier status, is estimated to be 20%, but at age 79, you have outlived much of your risk.

Most cases of colon cancer in Lynch syndrome occur before age 80.

In my opinion, both the risks of a colonoscopy and the risk of developing colon cancer are low, which means that it is difficult to make a recommendation as to which way you should go. Stopping is reasonable, but if you feel strongly that you want to continue, this is also reasonable.
