Featuring the experience and ingenuity of Porter Hunt, who comes to us from Wegmans Organic Farms, we produce the most flavorsome fruits and vegetables, including heirloom varieties, with our sustainable growing methods. This produce -- including garlic, potatoes, onions, squashes, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salad greens, melons and cucumbers – will be offered seasonally.

We grow our produce and raise our livestock in small quantities, focusing on quality, flavor and sustainability. We use only organic seeds, fertilizers and pest control methods in our gardens which are hand-tended by the monks who live here. Our pigs and heritage turkeys are raised on a carefully selected non-GMO feed mixture as well as their pasture and woodlot foraging. Four Scottish Highland cattle are also joining our farm this year, and we will be offering shares of succulent, grass-fed beef in the future.

This year’s pork shares are selling fast with only 5 of our 20 pigs still available. Our heritage turkeys, new this year, will be ready just in time for Thanksgiving and are sure to move just as quickly.

COLD, PAINFUL FINGERS CAN MEAN A SERIOUS DISEASE (NAPSI)—“Zombie Hands.” That’s what can happen to an estimated 5 to 10 percent of the population when temperatures start to fall.

In a typical case of Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s disease or syndrome, sufferers experience numbness and pain in their fingers, toes and other extremities. Fingers turn white, blue or red as the small blood vessels go into spasm within minutes of exposure to cold or stress, and they appear to be “dead” as blood flow is constricted.

Named for the French physician Maurice Raynaud, who first recognized the condition in 1862, it causes an interruption of blood flow to the fingers, toes, nose or ears.

There may be associated tingling, swelling or painful throbbing. The attacks may last from minutes to hours. In severe cases, the area may develop ulcerations and infections, which can lead to gangrene.

Raynaud’s can occur as a “primary” disease—that is, with no associated disorder—or as a “secondary” condition related to other diseases, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

“Ninety percent of Raynaud’s sufferers don’t seek treatment and too many physicians pay short shrift to those who do,” says Lynn Wunderman, founder and chair of the Raynaud’s Association.

“Treatment is important because some sufferers may have an underlying condition such as systemic scleroderma or lupus.

Awareness of such a problem may allow for earlier medical intervention.”

Simple blood tests can rule out the presence of antibodies associated with diseases that have Raynaud’s as a component.

No Caffeine After 50?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently heard that after age 50 you should not take in any caffeine. I do enjoy a cup of regular coffee with breakfast. Is this dangerous? -- Anon.

ANSWER: The majority of people over 50 continue to drink and enjoy caffeine in coffee, tea and other drinks. At reasonable doses it is very safe, and previous studies showing links to cancers have been pretty thoroughly discredited. I am all in favor of maximizing enjoyment of life in ways that aren’t harmful, and a cup of coffee in the morning is not harmful and is a big source of enjoyment to many.

As we age, many drugs (I’ll consider caffeine a “drug” for this purpose) are metabolized more slowly by the body, so some people may find that the same “dose” affects them more. This may occasionally cause a problem with sleeping for people who drink caffeine later in the day or at night, in which case the solution is to drink less or drink earlier.

Finally, age 50 seems pretty young, to me, to be concerned about changes in drug metabolism.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I think I may have herpes, but I’m not sure. What are the symptoms of the virus? When I go to the doctor, what do I say? When I was there last time, I was given a urine test for STDs, which was negative, but now I urinate a lot and have a bump on my penis. -- M.G. ANSWER: When we are discussing herpes as a sexually transmitted disease, we usually refer to herpes simplex virus type 2. Even though other herpes viruses can be transmitted sexually, HSV-2 is the most prevalent, with approximately 50 million people in the U.S. infected. HSV-2 usually is asymptomatic, but in both men and women it can be associated with periodic outbreaks of blisters, classically filled with clear fluid and painful. During this time, the virus can be accurately identified by a laboratory.

However, it is often not a classic appearance, and it’s wise to consider the diagnosis of HSV for any genital lesion. The quality of the herpes blood test has improved in recent years, and it is a good way to make the diagnosis in someone who doesn’t have a lesion at the time they see the doctor.

Two other STDs -- gonorrhea and chlamydia -- can be diagnosed using a urine test, but not HSV. When you go to the doctor, ask for a blood test to rule out herpes definitively.

Urinating a lot is not a usual symptom for STDs, but painful or uncomfortable urination is.

DEAR DR. ROACH: We often are advised to get plenty of fruit in our diet. Is dried fruit (apricots, dates, figs, prunes) considered healthy? -- N.M.G. ANSWER: Most dried fruit is healthy; however, there are two concerns: The first is that they have about the same amount of calories and sugar as whole fruit, and easily can be overeaten.

The second is that you should beware of dried fruits with added sugars. Some dried fruits are preserved with sulfites. Sulfites, as I have mentioned, cause allergic symptoms in some people, but are tolerated by most.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services.

An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.

“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.”

He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year.

Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected.

Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.

Mama Medium Star Provides Message of Healing, Hope and Laughter

PS states 9:33 as the arrival time, but the meeting is at 9:30. No phone call is necessary. She is a psychic after all. Actually, an empathic, psychic, clairvoyant is how the Bergen native and star of the new TLC show, Mama Medium, describes herself.

What strikes others immediately is how friendly and nice Jennie is. She has a warm smile and when she says that it’s nice meeting you, there is a sense that she genuinely means it. She and her husband, Mike, are exactly as they appear on TV: they have a sweet and fun rapport with each other, joking and laughing. They talk with those around them like they are visiting with old friends.

Mama Medium, Season 1, premiered in November with six episodes. The show aired nationwide and internationally: in the US, Canada, UK and even South Africa. Since the show started, Jennie has gotten messages from all over the world. Her demand for readings has increased from a waiting list of 700-1,000 people to 25,000 people and a current five year wait.

She describes herself as an empathic, psychic, medium and 4th generation clairvoyant.

Being empathic means she can communicate with those who can’t communicate; being a psychic means she can see the future, and being a medium refers to her ability to communicate with the dead and clairvoyant is how she receives messages from loved ones, through images.

Jennie was born in Rochester, but grew up in the town of Bergen, in Genesee County.

“Growing up, we didn’t talk about it,” said Jennie. “Every medium has different gifts and I’m the only one in the family who is public with mine.”

Just as on her show, Jennie is a doting wife and mother with a funny and likeable personality. She jokes about being referred to as a medium, saying she’s actually an XXL. Clearly, she has a sense of humor. She loves to make others laugh and believes that she was a comedian in a past life. The Jennie Marie , “Mama Medium” series follows Jennie as she helps people communicate with their loved ones who have passed, or who have suffered life-altering events and cannot communicate on their own. It also chronicles her family life in Greece, NY. “Mediumship is a part of my everyday life. I ask God, my guardian angels, spirit guides and past relatives for guidance,” Jennie states.

She lives in a busy household with her husband and four boys, who also carry the family’s spiritual gifts. “It’s a blessing and a challenge and meditation is a big factor in balancing my energy.” From studying Business Administration at Genesee Community College, to working in retail, being a flight attendant, real estate agent and hairdresser, Jennie has done many things and lived all over Western New York. From Bergen to Pavilion to LeRoy to Churchville with several moves back to Bergen, until ultimately settling in her current location: her husband’s hometown of Greece.

Yet, her soul knew she would do more.

“I can’t tell if I manifested it or if it was a premonition. I told my husband I would have a show four years ago,” Jennie said. “It was all in a joking way, and he said no. I would bring it up every year, and he would still say no, but it was lingering. And then it came together.” It is this trifecta - empathic, psychic and clairvoyant, which sets Jennie apart from other psychics.

“I was seven when I realized I was a medium,” she said on her TLC

I figured out I was an empath, I think, right around 11 ... some of my friends, we started playing soccer, and some of them started getting hurt and I remember feeling the pain in my body or crying for them.” In her twenties, she started experiencing moments that connected her with the other side. At this point, she had realized what she had was special and decided to meditate and let her power grow. By her thirties, she was working as a hairdresser and sharing her insights with clients. When they came back and expressed how her messages helped them heal, Jennie decided to devote her career to her gift and become a full-time medium.

She is well-aware of the skeptics who ask why psychics don’t win the lottery. “Do you think that God gave me this gift so I can gamble?” Jenny quips. “I use it to help other people. I say to critics that we are all entitled to our own opinions - give me five minutes when someone close to them passes, then call me.”

Jennie says the best part of the show is all the support she has gotten from the community. “People recognize me and tell me how much they like the show,” she says. The meeting at a local restaurant was interrupted several times by fans wanting to take pictures with her. Always gracious and kind, she obliges, while her husband stands by proudly. He joked that his job is to take pictures for fans when they go out.

Throughout the conversation, Jennie interjected with messages and insights that she could not have known. Maybe she did know the interview would start a little late that morning, and maybe she has some special intuition as to whether or not TLC will pick up her show for another season. Whether a camera crew is following her or not, Jennie will continue to provide her message of healing, hope and laughter through her readings and public appearances.

Eight Tips For Caregivers To Help Ease The Risky Business Of Caregiving (NAPS)—Millions of unpaid, family caregivers may be putting their own long-term health and financial security at risk when providing support for relatives or friends who need help taking care of themselves.

Research from nonprofit Transamerica Institute® finds that 69 percent of caregivers gave little or no consideration to their own financial situation when deciding to become a caregiver, and 55 percent say their own health takes a back seat to that of the person they are caring for.

“Caregivers play a vital role in our society. It is imperative that we raise awareness of the issues and risks they face and offer meaningful solutions that can help them better manage their responsibilities,” said Catherine Collinson, CEO and president of Transamerica Institute. These eight tips can help you maintain your own well-being while caring for your loved one.

1. Take care of your own health and wellness. Your physical health is important, too. Eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising, and taking breaks can all help increase your energy, reduce stress and improve your mood. Remember your own medical checkups.

2. Share caregiving and non-caregiving responsibilities. Share caregiving with family members and friends, or seek out community resources, such as adult day programs or transportation services. Ask for help with your own day-to-day responsibilities that caregiving makes difficult.

3. If employed, strive to stay in the workforce while caregiving. Consider all your options before reducing hours, job responsibilities or quitting your job. Taking time out of the workforce could make it difficult to return to work and to find a job at the same level of pay.

4. Ask if your employer offers programs or benefits to help caregivers. Many employers offer the ability to work remotely, flexible hours and compressed workweeks, which can make it easier to juggle work and caregiving. Ask if your employer offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which may include referrals to services for caregivers and care recipients.

5. Learn about the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), a federal law that requires covered employers to provide their eligible employees with protected, unpaid work leave for qualified medical and family reasons. It can help employees balance their job with caring for a family member. To learn more about FMLA visit dol.gov/whd/fmla, and consult your employer’s HR department.

6. Keep your own long-term financial security top of mind. As a caregiver, it is important to budget, keep track of expenses and save for the future. Save for retirement.

7. Explore programs that provide financial assistance to caregivers.

Some states have programs for Medicaid recipients to help pay nonprofessional caregivers, such as Cash & Counseling and In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). Veterans may be eligible for the Veterans Directed Home and Community Based Services (VD-HCBS) program. If the care recipient has a long-term care insurance policy, find out if it enables you to receive payments and what requirements or certifications you would need to receive payments. You may also be able to claim the care recipient as a dependent for tax purposes.

8. Remember patience. Caregiving takes patience, both in being realistic about what you as the caregiver can do, and in communicating with and assisting the care recipient. Relationships often change when the need for caregiving arises—from adult children reversing roles with their aging parents, to shifts in roles between spouses or partners.

RESTORING THE RED OSIER LANDMARK RESTAURANT

Returning to Our Roots (L-R) Owner Tim Adams, Head Chef William Burch and Owner Steve Foster donate to LeRoy Food Pantry Steve Foster and business partner Tim Adams have owned the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant for the past three years, but Steve Foster has been part of the Red Osier Landmark family for over 25 years. New head chef, William Burch, also has a long-standing attachment to the restaurant, having grown up just across the road from it. These two men, both with deep community connections and fond memories of the Red Osier Landmark’s exceptional quality, have united to bring the restaurant back to it gold-standard heritage.

“We are returning the restaurant to its roots,” says Foster. “Even our décor shows respect for its history.” Foster and Adams have already remodeled the entrance area to the restaurant, and the East Dining Room has been redecorated with local antiques, such as glass milk bottles, to reflect the building’s

creamery origins. The West Dining Room reflects a more oceanic theme.

“Most of the paintings hung in this room belonged to my great-great-great grandmother,” explains Foster. Future improvements include opening up the front bar area and adding French doors to the dining rooms.

The most important restoration, to Foster and Burch, however, came with the restaurant’s recommitment to serving only high-quality food. “Unfortunately, before we took ownership, less desirable cuts of beef as well as lesser grade seafood were being served to maintain bargain prices,” says Foster.

“This was not in keeping with the Red Osier Landmark’s reputation. We have worked hard to restore that quality.”

This restoration included hiring Head Chef, William Burch, in January 2018.

Burch brought in an incredible amount of experience, including working at Sear in Buffalo and the Caledonia Inn. Sharing Foster’s vision, Burch is adamant that only quality seafood and choice cuts of meat be served. He also uses only fresh produce and makes everything, breads and desserts included, from scratch. “We are constantly improving our menu and are open to customer feedback,” adds Foster. “We enjoy trying new things.”

We once again offer the high-quality, casual fine dining experience we were known for.” Foster also reassures anyone missing steep discounts: “We still offer specials every month but at prices that will not force us to compromise the quality of our food. The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant has returned to its gold standard, and it’s here to stay.”

Foster and Adams’ team is already rebuilding the restaurant’s once sterling reputation. Its Head Chef leads with passion and skill. The supporting chefs – Sous Chef Sam Malone, Chef Mike Mattern, and Chef Jim Colantonio – also passionate about food, now handle the prime rib area. Its wait staff are experienced professionals. Says Foster, “We carve tableside, create salads tableside, even flambé desserts tableside.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in psychiatric social work, mental health, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling or psychiatric nursing.

EXPERIENCE: • Three (3) years full-time paid experience in a comprehensive behavioral healthcare organization.

Experience must include direct work and clinical assessments with at-risk children, adolescents and/or adults (at least three (3) years) in a range of clinical and community settings that includes crisis intervention, safety planning and service coordination.

• Experience with OMRDD and court involved persons highly desirable. Ability to work effectively with clients, staff and community contacts from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
