Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.
Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

Soundproof Your Home
What’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding which rooms have the least amount of sound resistance.
To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and windows. Take a quick walk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate which ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room where volumes will be blasting on TV’s and stereos.
With this information, you should have a good idea of where you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet:
• Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help with the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow down the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home.
• Insulate your walls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors won’t just drive away excess noise, it will also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold months.
• Seal up all cracks and holes around windows and doors, and add double glazed windows to your current glass panes.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
Establish the budget. Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS
Offer bees plenty of flowering choices so they’ll be happy to come investigate. Native flowers are best because they will be most familiar. Try to plant an array that will flower at different times of the year. Simple flowers will offer more readily available access to pollen than hybrid or exotic varieties bred to produce mounding petals.
Control mold when using air conditioning
Keep equipment clean. Routinely clean dirt and debris out of air conditioning ducts and equipment. Pay special attention to organic matter, such as dirt, that may come in from outdoors.
WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Handrails, grab bars, nonslip stair treads, and many other devices can make homes safer for people of all ages and abilities. Outfit cabinets and closets with organizers that put frequently used items within easy reach. A sturdy step stool can reduce the risk of injury while reaching for items stored on high shelves.

Dog Makes Odd Breathing Noise
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, I had my 9-year-old, part-poodle/Maltese dog’s teeth cleaned. The vet had to pull two teeth as well. Since this was done, “Scoobie” seems to make an odd noise as he is breathing. I feel like this is due to the tube they put down his throat as they cleaned his teeth. When I got him home, he had a hacking cough, which subsided about three days later. But the noise he makes when breathing continues. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, though. I like our vet a lot and hate to question him, so hopefully you can help me out or let me know what I could ask the vet. -- Valeeta R., Montgomery, Alabama
DEAR VALEETA: A good veterinarian will not mind extra questions from a pet owner,so I encourage you to contact your vet and describe Scoobie’s breathing noise.
In fact, you should go ahead and bring Scoobie in to have thevetcheckoutthenoiseinpersonsohecanruleoutany serious issues.Pets that are put under general anesthesia for certain procedures (such as the tooth scaling Scoobie had) can develop complications afterward, ranging from stress reactions to major health emergencies. Don’t be worried about bothering your vet -- your dog’s health is the most important thing here.
Ask lots of questions, and insist on straightforward answers from the vet -- not answers designed just to make you feel better. If afterward you feel that you didn’t receive satisfactory answers, or if Scoobie doesn’t improve, take your dog to another vet for a second opinion.
Warsaw’s David Hawley Memorialized at Camp Sam Wood’s Nature Pavilion
BY CHARLOTTE CLARK
Great Falls Council of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, July 19th, to reveal the new David Hawley Memorial Nature Pavilion at Camp Sam Wood. e pavilion is one of several upgrades to the camp property over the past year, many of which have been funded through the generous bequest of Mr. Hawley, an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster, camping chair, and board member since 1985 of the local Scouting America council.
Mr. Hawley, of Warsaw, N.Y., a former teacher at Pioneer Central Schools, passed away in November 2023, but he le the council with a legacy gi to help cover maintenance and project expenses at Camp Sam Wood in Pike, N.Y., which is one of three Scout camps operated by the Great Falls Council.
e Dave Hawley Memorial Pavilion was constructed over the past nine months and replaced a previous structure that was suffering the effects of time and decay. e pavilion serves as a designated space for programming, ceremonies, meals, and fellowship for campers and visitors to Camp Sam Wood.
“His memory is celebrated by many in our Scouting community, and we truly miss him being around.”
JIM MCMULLEN
Gary Decker, CEO and Scout Executive for Great Falls Council, says, “Dave’s legacy is much more than a pavilion. Dave was the Scoutmaster of Troop 4055 in Arcade for nearly three decades and was actively involved on the board of directors for Genesee Council, Iroquois Trail Council, and Western New York Scout Council before his passing. He made a huge difference in the lives of so many young people during his years as a volunteer. We are honored to name the pavilion in his memory.”

Whitney Houston - With a big voice and personality, Houston was incredibly popular during the 1980s and 1990s. While she is known for many chart-topping hits, her fame reached a new level when she covered Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” for the movie “The Bodyguard,” in which she also starred. Houston’s version bridged the gap between country and R&B/pop.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Reasons to smile
With all the negative, questionable and just plain bad news out there lately, I’ll take good news anywhere I can find it.
And one place is the website Good News Network (www. goodnewsnetwork.org). GNN, started in 1997, currently has 21,000 good news stories from around the world. Categories range from life, to gardening, to health, business and more.
There’s a free app for the phone, and if you don’t like to see ads, you can pay a yearly fee of $15 to get rid of them. Or click the “Subscribe” button to get a free bit of good news in your email each day.
There’s even a GNN book: “And Now, The Good News: 20 Years of Inspiring News Stories,” by Geri Weis-Corbley, available on Amazon in paperback. The reviews for the book are great, saying that the short stories are real mood-lifters. I’ll be ordering it. Here’s an example: The bank that lost 66 of its employees on 9/11 have paid to put all those employees’ kids through college. How great is that?!
What to watch & where to watch it:
ON NOW: “The Phoenician Scheme” (PG-13) Peacock
ON NOW: “Love Island: Beyond the Villa” (Season 1) Peacock
13-Aug: “Fixed” (R)
13-Aug: “Songs From the Hole” (Documentary)
14-Aug: “Miss Governor” (Season 1, Part 2)
15-Aug: “Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser” (Docuseries)
Here’s another one from the book: A piece of a family farm was being sold at auction and a very young family member wanted to bid and hopefully win back the property. By common agreement, all the other 200 farmers at the auction stayed silent while the young family member was bidding. He won back the family’s farm land.
The Good News Network isn’t the only bright spot. Positive News (www.positive.news) will send a good news email once a week. The categories range from society to science to economics and more. It’s British, which makes it even more interesting.
If you’d rather look around on your own, do an online search for good news, positive world news or even good news for seniors. You’re sure to find something to smile about!
Obey the rules. By veering off course, park visitors may inadvertently disturb local plant and wildlife.

The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life.

Examining the Common and Available Treatments for Gallstones &body mind
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Q. A.
DEAR DR. ROACH: What advice do you have for the treatment of gallstones? -- N.W.
ANSWER: Gallstones are common (6% of men and 9% of women will get one over a lifetime) and are mostly composed of bile salts and cholesterol. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and the risk of complications. Depending on the size and composition of a person’s gallstones, there are different therapies available.
Themostcommontreatmentforsymptomaticgallstonesissurgery. Surgery is highly effective, although there are complications such as bleeding, infection and leaks. About 10% of people will develop diarrhea after surgery, which tends to get better over weeks to months but sometimes requires treatment with a bileacid-binding drug like cholestyramine. Surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means faster healing times.
For people who are not good candidates for surgery (such as those with significant medical illnesses) or people who do not want surgery, there are other options. Medications given by mouth, such as ursodiol (Actigall), can dissolve gallstones, but this can take a long time, usually several years. People with smaller stones that are mostly made of cholesterol can be good candidates for this treatment. However, it is not 100% effective.
Another option is a tube placed into the gallbladder through the abdominal wall to drain bile, which is also sometimes done to remove stones, but I have seldom seen it done. Similarly, shockwave treatment, which is commonly used for kidney stones, is rarely used but can be a reasonable option in people with only one or two stones.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE
Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.
MICROCEPHALY BROUGHT INTO THE LIMELIGHT
Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects.
Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities.
Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.
AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT
Confirm your technique is the right one. Exercise science is continuously evolving, and that means workouts and fitness machines are evolving as well. When using a piece of equipment for the first time or altering a workout routine, men and women should consult with a gym employee or personal trainer to learn the correct technique. Incorrect technique can lead to minor and serious injuries because muscles are used in ways they are not intended to be used when exercises are performed properly. Research appropriate techniques, taking advantage of online video tutorials if you don’t exercise at a gym, to ensure the exercises you want to perform are done properly. When beginning a new routine, ask a friend or gym employee to observe your workout and let you know if you are doing anything incorrectly.
The Senior Stretch
Stretching regularly can help alleviate pain, protect joints, prevent injury and maintain mobility as we age. Incorpora ng stretching sessions into your daily or weekly rou ne is a simple and effec ve way to enhance your health and well-being; a er all, you can do it anywhere, any me, without the need for any equipment. Here are a few ps to help seniors – or anyone – stretch safely:
• Warm up your muscles before stretching by walking or moving around for at least five minutes.
• Stretch gently and slowly, taking in a deep breath and exhaling as you stretch.
• Hold stretches for about 30 seconds, allowing muscles me to relax.
• Avoid bouncing while stretching, and never stretch to the point of pain.
Science-Backed Benefits of Strength Training 5
Experts generally recommend 20 to 30 minutes of strength training two or three mes per week. Here’s why:

Strengthen bones.
Strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
Manage weight.
Increasing your metabolism and muscle with weights helps you burn calories more efficiently.
Maintain flexibility and balance.
Weight-bearing exercise can protect your joints from injury and reduce symptoms of arthri s, while also lowering your risk of falls by improving balance.
Enhance mood and quality of life.
Strength training can help reduce symptoms of many chronic condi ons like depression, back pain, heart disease and diabetes. Research also suggests that exercise may help support cogni ve func on in older adults.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money.
Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.
Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

Libraries
A heartfelt thank you to the parking and office staff of the Orleans County 4H Fair for their courtesy, thoughtfulness, and follow-up. Our precious granddaughter lost an item that is very special to her at a few levels within minutes of walking away from our parked car. With heavy hearts, we went to the fair office to inquire about lost and found, and our number and the item description were taken with a promise to call if it was found. As it is a high demand item, we expected nothing, but to my surprise, I got a call two days later that it had been found! A very, very special thank you again to fair staff for follow-through and honesty. These lessons are more valuable than the item itself and I thank you all for being a part of the village it takes to raise a child right! We also had a wonderful time at the fair! Great job, as always!
Trespassing
I live in [local town] on a side street. The complex behind me thinks it’s okay to use my driveway and lawn to cut through to their apartment. If that isn’t bad enough, dropping trash along the way. Then it’s all hours of the day and night. I hear their convos on phone with each other and their loud music. If you live in [town] please think of your neighbors.
Free recycling on Saturday
Becauseyouareextraspecial?Tothepeople who broke open the recycling receptacle on SaturdayJuly5thanddumpedtheirgarbage in. There are cameras on the DPW building!! This is a free service for our community and was closed due to the holiday weekend with signs posted in advance. The kind gentleman that worked that morning had to crawl in and retrieve your garbage! I hope it was worth it for you. Shame on you!
I am so grateful for our libraries. I have the fondest memories of weekly trips to the library with my father. Now I can share that experience with my grandson. We attend the weekly story time at two libraries. He is able to enjoy fabulous stories, engage in craft projects, and/or dance and play with other children. Of course, libraries offer more than that. They provide internet access for those who do not have it at home. They provide employment resources for those looking for jobs. They offer a variety of fun classes and build community. Of course, you can always find a good read there. Our communities are enriched by our libraries. And thank you to the librarians who make it happen.
