Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.
Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.
Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimatelypatronizerestaurantsthatwon’tcompromisetheircommitments to eating healthy.
Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers getenoughtoeatanddon’tfeelcheatedwhenthebillispresented.Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.
Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-styledessertsathome.Thatmakesdessertsevenmorespecial when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit.
Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

The National Safety Council says more than 90 percent of nonfatal poisonings and 99 percent of fatalities attributed to poisonings occur in adults older than 19.The NSC says that,in 2019,the most recent year for data, there were 65,773 preventable poisoning deaths in the United States.

Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.
Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Exercise caution with private sellers. Buying from a private seller is a bit riskier than utilizing a dealership. That’s because the due diligence falls on you as the buyer. Ask for a vehicle history report (commonly known as the CARFAX®) for any vehicle you’re considering, even if it means paying for the report. The report will list any accidents and other red flags. If a seller refuses to offer the report, pass on the deal.
Drive in moderate weather: The software experts at Geotab note that cold weather affects EV range. Though battery thermal management systems have been designed to keep batteries within an optimal temperature range to minimize loss in battery performance, battery range is adversely affected when driving in extreme cold. Geotab notes that 70 F is the trip efficiency sweet spot.
Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion.
Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.
Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield.
Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly.
Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

e Village of Churchville has a new slice of something special. In January 2025, Salvatore’s Pizza officially opened its doors at 48 South Main Street, offering the brand’s signature menu in a vibrant, welcoming space designed to bring people together. At the heart of the new location is Kayla Kent-Moreira—longtime Salvatore’s executive, local mom, and now franchise owner/operator.
Kayla has been with the Salvatore’s Pizza Family since 2012 and currently serves as the company’s President of Business Operations and CFO, and leads this new venture with her husband Marcelo Moreira, children Jilliana, iago, Gabriella, and a team of family, friends, and dedicated staff.
As only the second female franchise owner in Salvatore’s history, the moment carries personal and professional meaning for her, as she says it “adds another layer of responsibility and pride. It’s a reminder that I’m part of something larger than myself—helping pave the way for other women who may one day want to follow the same path.”
Morethanabusinessmilestone, thisnewlocationrepresents a family endeavor rooted in passion and purpose. Kayla and Marcelo are partners in business and in parenting, raising a family of five, and as a mom, Kayla sees her franchise ownership as an opportunity to lead by example, saying “It’s empowering to show [my daughters, Jilliana and Gabriella] that women can own, manage, and excel in spaces that are o en male-dominated.”
Kayla’s road to Churchville began in Lyndonville. Earning a degree in Sport Management from then St. John Fisher College, she began working with the Rochester Lancers and LadyLancersindoorsoccerteams, alsoownedbySalvatore’s CEO and founder, SoccerSam Fantauzzo. Over the last 13 years since then, she’s grown into one of the brand’s most influential leaders, helping oversee franchising, finances, marketing, and day-to-day operations across the company.
“I had no idea that my career would end up in pizza, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Kayla reflects, adding, “ e journey has been fun and rewarding, but it hasn’t come without sacrifice.” With 60+ hour work weeks, she admits it’s a challenge to balance her personal and professional roles, but she finds it “an opportunity to inspire and be a role model for my girls and for other women and moms out there who may think being a mother limits their professional aspirations. It’s about breaking barriers and creating more representation for women in business, which is incredibly important to me both personally and professionally.”
When the opportunity came to own and operate the Churchville location near their home, Kayla felt “it was the next best thing for [her] career.” As a Salvatore’s executive, Kayla knew and understood the business side, but she sought to communicate with owners and actually understand what they experience, so it was time to open her own location.
is hands-on perspective, combined with her corporate experience, positions Kayla uniquely for success. According to SoccerSam Fantauzzo, “Kayla has been an integral part of Salvatore’s corporate for years... Her loyalty and dedication to all our brands is unmatched. I am so proud of her as she takes on this new challenge while also continuing her corporate career.”
Silvio Fantauzzo, President of Restaurant Operations, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Getting to know Kayla over the years, I have no doubts in her ability to be successful. Churchville is SO lucky to have her, and the Salvatore’s Pizza Family is SO happy to be in Churchville!”
Kayla is equally enthusiastic about becoming part of the local community. She says “I’m excited about getting involved— whether it’s sponsoring local events, partnering with nearby schools, offering paint nights, live music, and more. It’s about showing that this location is not just a business, but a place that cares about bringing people together.” Kayla looks forward to building lasting relationships with guests, saying, “I want everyone who walks through our doors to feel like they’re part of the Salvatore’s family.”
“Salvatore’s as a company has always been about family, quality, giving back, and bringing people together, and that’s something I’m proud to continue here. It’s more than just serving great pizza—it’s about providing a place where memories are made, whether it’s over a casual dinner, a birthday party, or a spontaneous get-together with friends. With Kayla KentMoreira at the helm, this is more than just a new franchise opening – it’s the start of something special for Churchville and beyond.

By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one.
Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.
This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.

ANSWER: : Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.

During your next dental cleaning, the hygienist may use an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus (tartar) from your teeth and under the gumline. Ultrasonicscalersareverygentletoyour teeth, gums, and roots, making them a good option for patients with gum disease. They use water, ultrasound, and mechanical vibrations to make tooth calculus easier to remove. They also create shock waves that disrupt bacteria biofilms, allowing bacteria and debris to be flushed by a stream of water emitted from the ultrasonic scaler. Tiny bubbles in the water create an oxygenated environment that further disrupts bacteria. In addition to safely cleaning the surfaces of teeth, ultrasonic scalers are used below the gumline to clean tooth root surfaces without damage.

Stinging insects such as bees and wasps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. However, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importance of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared toward providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) wants to remind homeowners that while creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital everyyear.
People with known allergies to insect stings or with asthma should be especially careful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and wasps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should always be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact with a stinging insect, swatting at it will often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slowly walk in one direction until the insect losesinterest.
Maintaining a garden that serves as a welcome oasis for wild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great way to protect pollinators. Without proper beekeeping training, however, homeowners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property.
If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location where the bees can be allowed to thrive without posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage,as well as attract peststo the property.

It seems that there’s one recall after the other lately, mostly for our foods. To stay safe with what we eat, we need to keep an eye on those recalls.
Some of them have been scarily bizarre. The latest ones include pieces of plastic in sausages, wood in frozen meals, stones in chocolate bars, botulism in juice and tree nuts in cheesecake.
Then there are the undeclared allergens, like the milk that was in tortilla chips and chicken salad, which can affect people who have a dairy allergy.
And we have the hot sauce with undeclared sulfites, which can seriously affect people who have an allergy to sulfites.
Then,in a potentially very dangerous mistake for those with heart and blood pressure problems, ground coffee was labeled as decaffeinated when it actually had caffeine.
And when you thought you’d recover from an illness with some over-thecounter help, we had a cough and cold medication recalled for being contaminated.
Humans aren’t the only ones to be affected by the wrong ingredients in our foods. A recent recall was for a dog snack that was contaminated with salmonella.
Nobody likes extra email to wade through, but in the case of recalls, we really do need to pay attention.

Signing up for email notifications is the best thing we can do right now, especially with the increase in the number of recalls.Go to www.recalls.gov/ food.html,www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls and www.foodsafety.gov to sign up for email alerts. Or if you really don’t want extra emails in your inbox, make a point of going to those sites once a week and scrolling through the list of new recalls.
Even if you think you probably don’t have a recalled item, if you’ve ever bought it in the past, check your freezer and cabinets. That item might still be there.

Cats can become pregnant even during the first estrus cycle. A feline’s pregnancy lasts around 63 to 65 days, or about nine weeks. A cat also can be impregnated again very quickly after giving birth, as nursing kittens will not prevent a subsequent pregnancy. The average litter size is three to six kittens, so it’s easy to see just how many kittens can be born of one cat if she’s left to her own reproductive devices. Females also can be mated by more than one male or even one of their male relatives.
Socialize the pet. Learning how to respond to other dogs and people is an important aspect of canine life. If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. Socialization can begin as soon as a puppy is immunized and able to venture out with others.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a beautiful pup at about 3 months old this winter. Now that the weather is warming up and “Blondie” is about 6 months old, I can’t wait to start going on hikes with her. How far can a puppy that age walk? Do you have any safety tips? – Carl J., via email
DEAR CARL: Blondie sounds like an amazing pup! With the correct training, she will eventually be able to accompany you on some hikes – but not this season.
Puppies at 6 months of age should only take limited walks, ranging from five to 10 minutes max, on level ground. Don’t take them farther – pushing them too soon can cause a host of physical problems because their growth plates haven’t fused. Most experts recommend lengthening walks gradually starting from about 9 months. For longer distances over uneven ground, and when training dogs to carry their own panniers, wait until they are 12 to 18 months old.
So, you won’t be able to take Blondie with you on day hikes this year – unless you carry her. There are special “sport sacks” just for carrying small- to medium-size dogs. Think of it as a fitness challenge for you, and a way for your pup to learn to love the outdoors.
In the meantime, you can work on Blondie’s obedience training. It’s critical that she respond immediately when you call her, especially out on hikes. She should also be well socialized to people and other dogs – this prevents a lot of grief on the trail. Right now is the perfect time to do that, and to bond with your dog so that you have fun whether you’re outdoors or not.

[A couple months ago] my vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road while I was stopped at a signal light. Because my focus was on the red light I did not see the vehicle coming toward me going thru the red light and was blindsided at the impact, with the car then continuing on to collide head on with a 3rd vehicle. She was kind enough to follow this vehicle for quite a distance knowing it would cause an accident and to speak with me and the police as a witness. I am extremely grateful for the time she spent to set the record straight in which some explanations as to who is at fault or what actually happened can be twisted around by some insurance companies.
On a recent visit to my parent’s grave to place an Easter wreath, I was saddened to see so many dead X-mas wreaths and plants still on graves in April. We’re blessed to be able to leave flowers, flags and objects as some cemeteries don’t allow it at all. People need to be more considerate and respectful of the deceased and their families and remove the dead plants in a timely manner or replace any faded artificial flowers and flags. The presence of litter detracts from the peaceful and solemn atmosphere of the cemetery.

Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
