DID YOU KNOW?

Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude.Thetroposphereiswhere nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’sstratosphereabsorbssome of the sun’s radiation, including theUVandUVBradiationthathas been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, istheoutermostlayerofthe Earth’satmosphere.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME

Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY

Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.

A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.

Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.

Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.

Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money.

Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.

Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

KEEP THE SUN OUT

Ge ing through the winter

The top five items tonight on my local news channel were automobile crashes caused by slick road surfaces. And these weren’t just little fender benders, although there was one of those that happened in a store parking lot. These five crashes produced crushed cars, serious injuries and yes, in one case, death of the occupant of the vehicle ... all because of the condition of the roads.

And while I hate to think of myself as a coward, more and more there are things I just don’t want to risk.

I check the weather news for the temperature before I venture out by car. If it’s too cold (or will be by the time I get home), the roads could be slick. Black ice is hard to see but once your vehicle is on it, there’s no steering. Too cold and I just stay home.

During a recent storm we had yet another power outage. I keep thermometers in the fridge to keep track of how warm the temperature gets. For iffy items, I just don’t take the chance that they might have gone bad. While several sources say to be sure the foods have stayed below 40 degrees in the fridge, the CDC puts a specific time limit on it: four hours in a refrigerator without power. After that time, throw it out.

Instead of waiting for a warm day (which isn’t going to happen soon) to melt the ice and snow on my walk and driveway, I hire someone to clear it, and I just pay the cost, even though it’s not a welcome expense.

And in case you’ve never looked it up, it appears that over the age of 45 is when we’re advised not to shovel snow because of the risk of heart attack! For me, 45 was a very long time ago!

Bird Lover Is Troubled Over the Possible Transmission of Bird Flu

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have two bird feeders off my back deck. They hang from tall poles as a vain attempt to keep squirrels from eating all of the birdseed! But to refill them, I must take them down and handle them, and I recently wondered if I might be exposing myself to the new bird flu.

Is there any information about this possibility? Any possible transmission of the virus might have occurred to other bird lovers, too. -- J.F.

ANSWER: The songbirds you are attracting to your feeders, such as cardinals, sparrows and woodpeckers, are not likely to be infected with avian influenza (“bird flu”). It generally infects waterfowl such as gulls and ducks.

Most experts do not recommend taking down your feeders but do recommend a periodic cleaning of feeders and baths with a diluted bleach (10%) solution. You should wash your hands after refilling your feeders.

Those who keep poultry such as chickens, ducks, geese or turkeys (which may also be infected by bird flu) should not use feeders or baths that attract wild birds.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I see commercials about different kinds of pillows, asserting that they are better for you medically in various ways, especially with enhancing your sleep experience. This implies to me that conventional pillows can be bad for you. Is any of this true? -- W.R.G

A.

ANSWER: No, I wouldn’t say that conventional pillows are bad for you. However, there is evidence that in people with chronic neck pain, pillows made with latex or springs have been shown to reduce neck pain, waking symptoms and disability. They also enhance the satisfaction that people have with their pillows, but studies taken as an aggregate did not show an improvement in sleep quality. It seems that the height and composition of the pillow can affect the alignment of your neck bones.

If you aren’t having any problems, there is no reason to change. But if you wake up with a sore neck or have chronic neck pain, a special pillow might help, although I doubt there is one pillow that is right for everybody.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Q.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes (increased estrogen and progesterone) make a woman more susceptible to gingivitis, or gum disease. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, which can cause soreness and bleeding. According to the CDC, pregnancy gingivitis affects as many as 75 percent of pregnant women. Hormonal changes can lead to gum inflammation because of the body’s decreased ability to fight plaque bacteria coupled with increased blood flow to the gums. While there’s no evidence that shows mild gingivitis is harmful to the fetus or causes premature birth or miscarriages, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis (advanced gum disease), which has been linked to preterm birth and low birth weight. It can also lead to tooth lossifnottreated.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION

Cats can become pregnant even during the first estrus cycle. A feline’s pregnancy lasts around 63 to 65 days, or about nine weeks. A cat also can be impregnated again very quickly after giving birth, as nursing kittens will not prevent a subsequent pregnancy. The average litter size is three to six kittens, so it’s easy to see just how many kittens can be born of one cat if she’s left to her own reproductive devices. Females also can be mated by more than one male or even one of their male relatives.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation

One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Honoring search and rescue dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing to ask if you can call attention to search and rescue dogs, who do heroic work every day -- from the recent fires in southern California to avalanche rescues and more. I just think they’re amazing. -- Carlo in Missoula, Montana

DEAR CARLO: You’re absolutely right: Search and rescue (SAR) dogs do amazing work nearly every day in the U.S. and around the world. They are unique, highly trained working dogs, often specializing in types of rescue or recovery.

SAR dogs must be energetic but even-tempered, as they often work long hours in chaotic environments. They must be confident, motivated and responsive to their handler. Most are selected when they’re puppies, after a period of observation and interaction, and not every SAR candidate makes the cut, even at this early stage. Training can take at least two years, and most SAR dogs retire before they’re 9 or 10 years old, as the physical requirements can be demanding.

There are two types of SAR dogs: air-scenting and trailing. An airscenting dog detects and follows airborne or wind-borne scents over a large area (up to 150 acres or a quarter mile in some instances) and follows them as close to the source as possible; cadaver dogs are one example. They frequently work off-lead and return to their handler to lead them to the source. A trailing dog can discern a specific scent, such as that of a missing person, and follow the exact track of that scent; they usually work on-lead with the handler, proceeding more slowly.

These dogs are so effective that they’re used in 70% of rescue missions worldwide, entering dangerous areas ahead of human teams to pinpoint survivors.

So, hats off to search and rescue dogs! And to their dedicated trainers and handlers.

Is there a working animal you’d like to highlight? Tell me at ask@ pawscorner.com.

“We do not free ourselves from something by avoiding it, but only by living through it....” ~ Cesare Pavese

Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control.

We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it!

By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE

In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year

Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.

3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective.

Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Major Amie Feroleto

A TRAILBLAZING LEADER IN THE NEW YORK STATE POLICE

On January 2nd, Major Amie P. Feroleto made history as the first female commander of Troop A in the 107-year history of the New York State Police. As the 28th leader of the troop, she oversees all patrol and investigative operations across Western New York’s eight counties, managing a force of more than 400 sworn and civilian personnel. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in law enforcement and “sets an inspiring precedent for future leaders in law enforcement.”

A Journey Shaped by Family and Community

Born and raised in Castile, Feroleto’s path to law enforcement was not initially planned. A graduate of Letchworth Central School, eyeing a career in business management or human resources, she grew up in a family deeply involved in the community, with her mother serving as a foreign language teacher and her father as a retired State Corrections Lieutenant. It was her father’s encouragement that led her and her sister to take the New York State Police entrance exam, a decision that would ultimately shape Amie’s career (her sister is now a NYSP Lieutenant at the NYS Intelligence Center and her brother recently retired from the Air Force).

Feroleto earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from SUNY Geneseo in 2000 and earned a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice at the University at Albany two decades later. She credits her passion for lifelong learning as a driving force behind her continuous professional development, including specialized training in law enforcement leadership, emergency management, and critical incident response.

Outside of work, Feroleto prioritizes time with her fiancé and three boys, sharing a love of sports and outdoor activities like hiking, boating, kayaking, and just relaxing on Silver Lake. She is also an active member of the New York State Police so ball team, embracing the competitive spirit and camaraderie of the team while promoting teamwork and morale in a different capacity.

A Career Defined by Dedication and Leadership

Feroleto’s 22-year career has been marked by diverse assignments across multiple troops and roles. She began as a field training officer in Steuben County(TroopE),thenasatrooperinPlattsburgh(TroopB).Overtheyears, she climbed the ranks in Troop K (Westchester and Putnam Counties) and Troop D (Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison Counties), eventually becoming Administrative Captain in Canandaigua (Troop E). Her experience also includes time in Professional Standards Bureau and Communications, as well as special assignments including the State Fair Exhibit, State Police Summer Program, Child Seat Technician role, Promotion Exam Detail, and the Master’s Program.

Reflecting on her career trajectory, Feroleto says, “When I started as a young trooper, my long-term goal was to achieve the rank of Lieutenant, following in my father’s footsteps. Once I reached that milestone, I set my sights on something new, becoming the first female Major in Troop A. Now that I’ve reached that goal, I’m taking time to appreciate the journey and the people who helped me get here before deciding what’s next.”

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Change

Like many in law enforcement, Feroleto has faced challenges, particularly in balancing career and family. Taking time off to raise her children posed concerns about falling behind, but she says she “reminded [herself] that raising a family was just as important as [her] career,” and she “made a conscious effort to be present for both.”

She has witnessed significant changes in the field, particularly regarding women’s roles. With national representation of women in policing historically at 11%, initiatives such as the 30x30 Initiative— aiming for 30% female recruits by 2030—are helping shi the landscape. Feroleto is deeply invested in these efforts, advocating for more women to pursue careers in law enforcement, and she said she’s “seen a noticeable rise in female recruits and leadership… the shi is encouraging… diversity, especially in leadership, is critical to strengthening our organization and enhancing how we serve our communities.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

As a mentor and leader, Feroleto emphasizes the importance of diversity in law enforcement. She recalls cutting her hair off before the academy to blend in, only to realize that the profession needs individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives. “If you have the dedication, integrity, and perseverance to pass the background, physical fitness exams, and psychological evaluations, then you belong in this profession. ere is no single ‘type’ of officer; what matters is your commitment to service and your ability to do the job with honor.”

Share your original stories about local heroes, community events, school achievements, or hidden gems–email your story idea to hometown@gvpennysaver.com!

She also recognizes the significance of her position as a role model for young women considering a career in law enforcement. “I once read that ‘you cannot be what you cannot see,’ and that resonates deeply with me. I want other women to see women in leadership positions and know that leadership roles are not only attainable but something to aspire to.”

Feroleto is inspired by her colleagues, whom she says, “ ey are my motivation every day.” She seeks to recognize and appreciate officers’ service, sacrifice, and responsibilities, “fostering an environment where professionalism, growth, and service are prioritized.”

Looking Ahead

As Major of Troop A, Feroleto remains focused on fostering professionalism, mentorship, and excellence within the New York State Police. She is committed to strengthening community relationships through initiatives like the Special Olympics and organizations such as New York Women in Law Enforcement (NYWLE) and the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLE).

“If you have the dedication, integrity, and perseverance to pass the background, physical fitness exams, and psychological evaluations, then you belong in this profession. There is no single ‘type’ of officer; what matters is your commitment to service and your ability to do the job with honor.”
MAJOR AMIE P. FEROLETO

Her personal and professional goals remain intertwined—whether leading her team, coaching or cheering on her children, or bringing law enforcement and the public together in community initiatives, she seeks to continue making a positive impact on those around her. With her historic appointment, Major Amie Feroleto paves the way for future generations of law enforcement officers, proving that leadership, service, and perseverance know no bounds.

COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

(NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Problem

Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association.

Read The Label

Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.

You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor.

Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance.

Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies

Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.

What Else To Watch For

Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:

• Alcohol

• Amphetamines

• Antidepressants

• Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine)

• Caffeine

• Oral Contraceptives

• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example)

• Illicit Drugs

• Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone)

Learn More: For more information about keeping your heart healthy, go to www. heart.org/hbp. The maker of Coricidin HBP, Bayer Healthcare LLC, is a proud sponsor of the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure Effort.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

My small dog got out. She was just a puppy in training still. As I ran down the street in Newark, an officer stopped and helped me save her. I would like to thank him again for going out of his way to help.

On Jan. 24th, I lost my pet, Marlee. I went to get a mate to be with my other furry friend. I called several rescue shelters and foster homes. No one happened to have a lap furry friend. I called the animal shelter in Batavia and I’m so happy I found you! I want to give a hug and love to Linda and Brenda, two volunteers there. They said to come and see what they have. They had what I wanted. These people were so great and understanding and awesome! We just love our new furry friend, whose name is now Dallas. Great job to all the staff. I am very pleased with the outcome. God bless you all. Thanks again!

Co are Vet Pricing

Learn from my experience! I recently brought my two cats into a local Vet for their 3-year Rabies and FVRCP shots. When I called for the appt I specifically said, "shots only, that's all I can afford.” Well, much to my surprise when I was done, I received an invoice for $480! Yes, that's FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY DOLLARS! I was not only charged for the shots, but the bill also included a $87.50 "Wellness Visit" for each kitty! I was beyond shocked. They only weighed my cats and asked me questions-OK? So, after the fact I called two other local Vets and here is the comparison pricing I received: 3-Year Rabies I was charged $118 for each kitty, while for the other 2 two Vets I called their pricing was $40/$50. Wellness Visit I was charged $87.50 for each kitty; other two Vets I called their pricing $50/$60. FVRCP I didn't question as it was a low cost. Please learn from my experience and remember this $480 bill I received and be sure to comparison shop your local Vets. Not all are created equal.
