YARD SALE TIPS

Leave young kids at home. Many kids will grow bored after the first yard sale, if not earlier. Hire a sitter and shop unencumbered.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

ELECTRICAL

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.

Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.

Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

PAINTING/PAPERING

CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS

Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS

One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object.

After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project.

With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

ROOFING & SIDING

It is the first mild day of March: Each minute sweeter than before... There is a blessing in the air, Which seems a sense of joy to yield To the bare trees, and mountains bare, And grass in the green field... We from to-day, my Friend, will date The opening of the year.

Love, now an universal birth, From heart to heart is stealing, From earth to man, from man to earth:

—It is the hour of feeling.

~William Wordsworth (1770–1850), “To My Sister”

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for theride.Driversabouttoembarkonaroadtrip, whetherit’stheirfirstsuch venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING

Look for a new job or fresh income streams.A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds.Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

The rich history of agriculture in the U.S. attracted colonists to the area. Since most colonists were European, the styles of agricultural cultivation and production were Europe influenced as well. Colonists also brought a large amount of livestock with them to America, which caused changes in its natural landscape. As the population grew, farms expanded, and settlements moved from the east into the west. This caused the agricultural industry to grow exponentially, with a larger variety of produce being rooted.

HFMP angel at just the right time

Thank you - to the person who paid for the quick grocery trip the kids and I took to HFMP a week ago last Wednesday. Sometimes we need a reminder that there ARE still kind people in this world. I for sure needed the reminder, going through a challenging season in life. Thank you, so much.

Good teenagers

My seventeen year old neighbor, Jack, was coming home from track practice only to see several cars driving over an American flag that had blown in the road from high winds. He was so appalled that cars were driving over it that he stopped his truck, stopped traffic, retrieved the flag, folded it, and returned it to the company it came from. There are still a lot of good teenagers around here. We are very proud of him.

it, we see you.

In our small town we have one chain coffee shop within one of our gas stations. They have eight (!!) of the large flags lining the street and corner with their logo. And even more so, they’re surrounding the small, local diner in the same parking lot. It’s obnoxious.

Burning garbage is illegal

For over four years now we have had to endure the toxic smoke that comes from our neighbors burn barrel. They burn now almost every day. Lots of us that live rurally have burn barrels that we burn sticks or paper in, but this family of pyromaniacs burns plastic and Styrofoam all the time in a barrel in the ditch on the edge of the road. Their garbage burns a black and grey smoke that makes it impossible to enjoy the outdoors. Most of the time they light it and then leave so they don’t have to breath it like we do. Let’s be clear about something. Burning garbage in NY state is illegal. Google it. Too bad no one enforces the law though. It stinks to have to endure such horrible neighbors who know the smoke bothers us, but don’t care. And get this, they actually pay for garbage pickup weekly.

Hi, my name is Norman Rockwell. I was adopted from Barncat Outreach Inc. when I was at one of their clinics, where my human Mom volunteers. I came home to 3 adult sister cats that have decided they like me. I love all the toys and attention I get at my new home.

DID YOU KNOW? If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C. Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden. ~Ruth Stout

My dog has cancer. What next?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Golden Retriever, “Jasmine,” was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. I’m devastated. She seemed to tire easily, so I took her to the vet for a checkup, where they said her lymph nodes were enlarged. They did a biopsy to confirm that it was cancer. My question is, what now? The vet said she needs more tests, but I’m not sure what happens after. -- Grace T., Hartford, Connecticut

DEARGRACE: I’m glad you took Jasmine right to the vet, because even though the diagnosis is a serious one, she can start getting treatment that much sooner.

According to the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, lymphoma is sadly common in Golden Retrievers and other dog breeds. However, it can be treated, with chemotherapy as the primary therapy. Surgery might be recommended depending on the type of cancer.

Now that lymphoma has been confirmed through the biopsy, the next step is to determine how far the cancer has spread through Jasmine’s body. Several tests are done: blood tests, urinalysis, a bone marrow test, X-rays and sonograms. Some veterinary offices are equipped for these tests, but you may be referred to specialist care for more advanced testing. These tests are essential for developing an appropriate treatment plan for your dog.

If the vet has not yet followed up with next steps since the diagnosis was made, call and ask for more details and their recommendation. Most vets provide this information along with the diagnosis, so it’s worrisome that you don’t have a path forward. You can always select a different vet if you aren’t confident in the current one.

Scams against Seniors are getting worse

Data breaches and financial scams against seniors are at all-time highs. What was bad before is apparently even worse now.

Why do scammers target seniors? Here are the top reasons:

- They perceive that we have a lot of money. After all, we worked all those years ... we saved a lot of cash, they assume. And now we have huge pension and Social Security income that surely puts us in a high income bracket, they assume.

- Many of us grew up in an era when we were polite to people on the phone. Scammers take advantage of that and coax us into divulging private information.

- Many of us aren’t especially skilled with technology. We press buttons on our phone that we shouldn’t, or click links in strange email, not realizing that we’ve just enabled the download of a virus or made a connection to the scammers.

Here are a few suggestions for staying safe in the war with the scammers: Order your credit report from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian and go over them line by line. Be sure there isn’t anything you don’t recognize, that no extra loans show up and no additional names are listed. To do this, go online to annualcreditreport.com and order your free credit reports. If you spot something wrong, report it at IdentityTheft.gov or call the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-372-8311.

Lock down your credit at all three credit bureaus. This will keep anyone from opening credit in your name.

To learn safety on your electronic devices, ask your senior center, library or even your bank for a class on how to avoid falling for an online scam. And perhaps most valuable of all: Don’t feel the need to be polite if a stranger calls you on the phone and starts asking questions. Just hang up. Better yet, don’t answer if you don’t recognize the number.

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER

Let your loved one know it’s alright to say, “No.” Caregivers may want to give their loved one advice, but it’s important that they recognize recommendations, however wellintentioned they may be, may not always be welcome. That can create unnecessary tension between caregiver and patient. Let your loved one know they can decline suggestions, and always ask permission before giving advice.

DENTAL EMERGENCIES

When does a dental problem become an emergency? Some issues need immediate attention, while others can wait until your next dental checkup. A dental emergency is any problem that requires immediate attention, like severe pain, bleeding that won’t stop, the risk of losing a tooth, or an infection.Otherexamplesareasudden or severely painful toothache, sudden swelling in the mouth or jaw, exposed nerves, knocked out or fractured teeth, abscesses, and objects lodged in the teeth or gums. Missing fillings and crowns can also be considered dental emergencies, due to the risk of further damage and infection. If you’re not sure if your issue requires an emergency visit, call your dentist to discuss your symptoms.

Anesthesia Required for Colonoscopy Has a Very Low Risk of Delirium

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, who is 71, has been having some short-term memory problems over the past two years. We recently saw his primary care doctor, who asked him some questions and had him do a few tasks. He did fail a few of them. She agreed that there was something going on, and now we have to wait to see a neurologist.

He has an appointment for a colonoscopy next month, and I’m concerned about how the anesthesia will affect his already compromised short-term memory. I saw the same thing happen with my father; he was having the same issues and broke his leg, which required surgery. He was never the same afterward. He couldn’t live on his own anymore and required memory care right away. I have been told by medical staff at the hospital that this sometimes happens after a surgery because of anesthesia.

What are your thoughts about my husband’s upcoming colonoscopy? Should I be worried about what this will do to his memory issues? -- S.L.

ANSWER: There are many kinds of memory issues that can affect older adults, and while Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, this does not mean that your husband has it. Getting an evaluation by a neurologist is an excellent idea.

Anesthesia does not cause dementia. However, some people, like your father, do develop a complication called postoperative delirium. Delirium is different from dementia because it comes on quickly. The cause is almost always identifiable, whether it’s due to medical illness, surgery, infection, low oxygen, metabolic abnormalities (such as sodium levels), etc. Delirium can last for a very long time and often unmask dementia that had been previously well-controlled.

The risk of delirium after the usual medication for a colonoscopy is small. The inhalation agents given in general anesthesia are much more likely to cause delirium. While a colonoscopy can be performed without sedation, in my opinion, the risk of delirium after a colonoscopy with the usual sedation is so low that it is not necessary to forgo it.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Jonathan Barefoot

March 10, 2025

Caledonia – Jon passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with his adoring and devoted wife by his side. He was 82 years old.

Survived by his wife of 28 years, Elizabeth Barefoot; his children, Kimberly Barefoot, J. Scott Barefoot (Lisa), Debbie Barefoot, Timothy Barefoot; his grandchildren, Megan (Martin) McNamara, omas Barefoot (Ali), Matthew Harrington, Alice Barefoot, Nicholas Harrington; sister, Ruth Keller, sister-in-law, Doris Barefoot, brother, Sidney Barefoot (Donna), sisterin-law, Margaret Churchill, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jon was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Barefoot; father, James Barefoot; step-mother, Evelyn Barefoot; brother, David Barefoot and sisters, Murrelle Bishop and Karen (Fred) Cwiklinski.

He was born in York, NY and lived most of his life in Livingston County. He started Barefoot Septic at the age of 18. Jon ran the business for 30 years until his son Scott joined him, and grateful to have Scott with him, co-ran the company for the next 30 years until he retired. He was known as a businessman of integrity, kindness, generosity, and caring by his employees, customers, vendors and the community at large. Besides digging in the ground, he enjoyed helping people with their septic and plumbing problems. A good day for Jon was if he could help someone in need, and that they felt loved by their interaction with him.

Jon enjoyed operating his equipment, particularly his backhoe. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, being outdoors, hunting and reading. He was a long-time member of Stone Presbyterian Church where he was an elder, occasional preacher and ran a Bible Study.

“The obscure we see eventually. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.....” ~ Edward R. Murrow

In our interpersonal relationships, how often we suddenly wake up to a situation that should have been obvious from the beginning. In some cases, we may not want to face up to an unpleasant fact so we ignore it and pretend to search for other solutions.

For some reason, the more obvious a thing or an idea may be, the easier it avoids detection. The lesson here is that, when we must find an answer, we should check out the obvious first, rather than come to it as a last resort.

Over the years, we have served a great number of families in this community. Most of them came to us on the recommendation of other families who appreciated our thoughtful consideration.

Preplanningafuneralmaysoundmorbid, asfewpeoplewanttothinkabout deaths or discuss dying with their families. But there are numerous

Jon and Liz were married in 1996 and spent many years traveling out west and around the Finger Lakes besides being involved in their families and church lives. In their later years together they stayed closer to home, spending weekends in Rochester or Skaneateles, hiking in parks, going out to dinner and attending the RPO and other cultural events around the area.

Most of all, he loved spending time with family. He was always interested in what his children, grandchildren and extended families were doing, always wanted them to call on him if they needed help with anything and always wanted them to know how much he loved them.

Jon was not a man of many words, but in his smile and in his eyes he could convey his love not only to family but to anyone he encountered. Loving others through his faith in Christ was essential to him, and the legacy he leaves for us is to love others as Jesus has loved us.

A special note of thankfulness to his caregivers, Tonya Lichti and Cassie Connolly, and to his doctors, Christine Rodgers, PA and Leila Kirdani, MD. We are forever grateful for your love, support, availability and constant care.

Friends and Family are invited to call on Friday, March 21 from 4-7pm, at Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 W. Main St., Caledonia. His Celebration of Life will take place at 11am on Saturday, March 22, at the Evangelical Presbyterian Stone Church, 3177 Church Street, Caledonia. Private interment. Reception to follow service at church.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Evangelical Presbyterian Stone Church, 3177 Church Street, Caledonia, NY 14423.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.
