GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

DOG-RELATED LAWN DAMAGE

Dogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dogurineandfecescanadverselyaffectthelookandhealthofalushgreen lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns.

In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

Install a low-flow shower head. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful and costly. Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.

Being Insistent About a Scan Saves the Life Of a Cancer Patient &body mind

DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one.

Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.

This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.

THE BENEFITS OF BUILDING A STRONG CORE

Sculpt abdominals: The cosmetic benefits of building a strong core should not be overlooked,as individuals might gain additional motivation to keep exercising and eating right when they see desirable results in the mirror. Core exercises strengthen and sculpt abdominal muscles, creating a win-win situation for anyone who wants to get healthy and look good doing it.

It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. --

ANSWER: : Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

MOUTHGUARDS FOR ORAL PROTECTION

A mouthguard protects your teeth, gums, tongue, andcheeksfromtrauma and injury. A mouthguard should be worn during contact sports and any athletic activity that puts your face at risk of injury. Mouthguards can also be worn at night to mitigate bruxism (tooth grinding). There are different options for mouthguards. Your dentist can make a mold of your teeth to create a custom mouthguard, which will be more comfortable and offer better protection. A custom mold can be made for either sports protection or bruxism prevention. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are molded to the shape of your teeth at home by boiling the mouthguard to soften it and then shaping it to fit your teeth while it’s still warm and pliable.

One of our basic philosophies at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is that our

patients must recognize the need to take charge of their oral health and do what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. We’ll work together as a team with you to achieve the longterm benefits that quality dentistry affords. From recommendations about mouthguards to routine well visitstomajordentalreconstructions, we’ve got your dental needs covered. Treating both children and adults, our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. One size fits all mouthguards come ready to wear but rarely fit well and offer the least protection.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses.

While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

oly Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, whoChristiansbelieveistheSonofGod,establishedthesacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

In many areas, we’ve grown accustomed to the unpredictable nature of the weather— especially during transitional seasons like Spring. One moment it’s sunny, the next it’s pouring rain, then it might switch back to mild or chilly temperatures, and even snow! It can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. For businesses, this constant shi in weather can make advertising feel like a challenge. But here’s the thing: while we can’t control the weather, we can control how we adapt our advertising strategies to navigate through it.

A key element in successful advertising is planning—especially when the weather is unpredictable. Imagine a scenario where weather wasn’t even a factor. e real question becomes: What message do you want to send, and what do you want your business to be known for at that moment?

Effective advertising isn’t just about responding to the weather. It’s about keeping your business front and center in the minds of your customers, regardless of whether the skies are clear or cloudy. Creating a consistent message that resonates with your target audience is what makes your brand memorable.

In a world where the only constant is change, embracing the unpredictability of weather allows brands to connect with consumers in ways that feel timely and relevant. So next time the weather shi s unexpectedly, see it not as a challenge but as an opportunity to engage, inspire, and drive conversions.

EASTER SYMBOLISM COMPLEMENTS THE HOLIDAY

Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special.

Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter.

The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death.

In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season.

The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb.

Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection.

The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all - the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.”

Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS

Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

Trainers train owners as well. Trainers won’t just work with pets, but also with pet owners. Scrapes and Cuts

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an adventurous Shorthaired Pointer named “Gordie” who loves running through the woods behind my home while I walk behind him. He occasionally comes back with scrapes and cuts. I want to share with your readers how I take care of his minor injuries, and when a vet visit is necessary.

Most of the time, Gordie’s scrapes are very minor. I always check him when we get back to the house, because he can easily pick up ticks, too. I remove any clinging ticks and kill them right away. I check the pads under his paws, and run my hand along his coat to remove burrs. If he has a scrape on his side or paw, I clean it with warm water, disinfect it and put some antibiotic ointment on it. If it’s a place where he can scratch or lick, I cover it with a gauze bandage for a couple of days.

Last month, Gordie limped over to me with a deep laceration on his left front paw pad. Fortunately, we weren’t far from home. I carried him inside and gently looked at the injury. It wasn’t bleeding too badly, but the cut was very deep, and trying to clean it was very painful for him. This time, we had to see the vet. I wrapped his paw in gauze to protect it and off we went. The vet stitched him up, and Gordie has to wear a lampshade collar for the next week or so to let it heal.

I hope my story will be helpful to readers. -- Tyler N., Dracut, Massachusetts

DEAR TYLER: This is very helpful! Best wishes to Gordie for a speedy recovery. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

FINDING THE MUSIC IN THE WORDS: The Poetic Journey of David Michael Nixon

Poetry has rarely been the most lucrative of callings— but for David Michael Nixon, it’s been a lifelong one. Born in Batavia and raised in Lockport from the age of three, Nixon’s love for verse began in 11th grade, when a school project on drones along the Mohawk River called for three poems. His English teacher, James Ashcra , praised the work—even if he admitted poetry wasn’t his strong suit. at moment, Nixon says, sparked something irreversible. “I decided I’d be a poet,” he recalls. “I didn’t realize how unlikely I was to make a living on it.”

Still, he never looked back, saying, “I write because I like readingandwritingpoetry. It’sawaytotrytofindoutthings— and to experience the art of it.” He has written thousands of poems, revised hundreds, and published chapbooks and full-length collections, with countless pieces appearing in journals and magazines across genres and locales. Nixon’s work spans a wide range of styles: rhymed and metered verse, syllabic forms, free verse, and hybrids in between. He says some poems begin with a formal structure in mind while others grow organically from a phrase or an inspired rhythm. A “quick writer,” Nixon prefers the “initial writing,” when inspiration strikes and an idea flows. When something works well in initial writing, he doesn’t like to revise much. However, as he’s grown, he’s come to accept the need for revision, saying, “Maybe I’m not as wildly inspired as I once was or maybe my standards are just higher and I think it has to be better.” However, he admits and advises, “If

you set the bar too high, you might not achieve anything.” It’s a balance.

For Nixon, sound plays a central role—creating “music in the words without being music”—a kind of sonic architecture that grounds his work. But the meaning, point of view, and imagery always remain essential. He says it’s sometimes hard to know what may register with listeners, but “One of the things I’m best at is sound, and a poem has to work on the page and out loud.”

Over the years, Nixon has learned from a wide array of poetic voices, drawing inspiration and mentorship from poets especially across the Western NY area. SUNY Brockport workshops have le a particularly lasting impression, as did the many informal poetry circles he’s joined over the years.

He’s been an active member of Western New York’s vibrant poetry scene, from Just Poets in Rochester and Sea of Coffee Open Mics in Geneva to the long-running Poet’s eater in Hornell. e region, he says, boasts a “strong and varied poetry scene,” with spaces like Writers & Books, Poetry Central, and the Dove Block Cultural Center offering consistent platforms for poets.

The smooth round stone leapt to my hand, perfect for slingshot, but I paused.

After a beat, I put the weapon back, then chose a flat stone that could walk on water.

Nixon’s poems frequently involve themes of peace and justice, family, death, religion, nature, and poetry itself. He says, “Any topic might be possible, but I o en write about what forms the just—what makes a worldview.” His work is grounded in an ethos of love and non-violence, advising everyone to focus on self-reflection and identify what truly means the most to you, instead of being swayed by fads and trends.

Despite decades of poetic output, Nixon remains humble and deeply human in his approach. “Don’t get discouraged if you’re not the best in the world,” he advises younger writers. “I felt confident when I had no reason to be confident. But even the best poet in the world could get better.”

For aspiring poets, his advice is clear: write o en, revise with care, and share your work. “You have to be persistent. If you’re not serious about it, it’s easy to be discouraged,” especially in America, where poetry isn’t always revered, he says. But who will receive your work if you don’t get it out there?”

His belief in poetry—both as cra and compass—remains strong. “Poetry helps people explore life and enjoy the beauty of the art,” he says, adding that poetry brings beauty to everyday experience.

You can find David Michael Nixon on Facebook and at open mic stages throughout the Finger Lakes and Rochester areas. Catch him at e Dove Block in Geneva this June 29th when he and Howard Nelson will be featured readers, or stop by Sea of Coffee for an evening of verse and camaraderie. SENIOR NEWS LINE

A New Internet Scam

I’d thought I could identify an internet scam when it showed up, but there’s a new one out now. It’s slick and potentially dangerous if you fall for it.

It’s called the CAPTCHA scam. CAPTCHA stands for “completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart.” They are those annoying interruptions when you’re trying to access a webpage. You typically have to click a box to prove you’re not a robot. Then you have to type in the skewed letters on the screen and click all the parts of the streetlight, or car or bus or whatever the image is. All this before it allows you to go to the page you’re trying to see.

The newest scam is that these CAPTCHAs are spreading malware in your computer with every step.

This is a sneaky scam because we’ve been lulled into complacency about those CAPTCHA verification tests, and we might tend to just click on it to get through it. Things are different now. If you come across a CAPTCHA, check the address of the webpage by looking for “https” to be sure that little “s” is present.

Here’s how the scams work:

You might be instructed to download a file or to press certain keys.

Or, after completing the first step, you might end up on a fake webpage that looks a lot like the one you were trying to get to.

Once you get through the steps, malware is installed on your computer without you knowing, and its job is to hunt for personal information on your machine.

If you suddenly get a CAPTCHA popping up when you don’t expect it, back out of the page. Don’t go there.

Even if you’re sure you’re safe, don’t download anything that a CAPTCHA steers you to.

And as always, keep good virus protection on your computer.

HOW TO CREATE A ROMANTIC NIGHT AT HOME

Slow dance: When was the last time you enjoyed a dance in each other’s arms? Turn up “your song” and sway to the beat. Dancing together can rekindle romantic feelings and needn’t be reserved for special occasions like weddings.

“Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it all into words is all that is necessary. ” Margaret Cousins

“Hometowns seem to be loved most by the people who used to live in them....” ~ William D. Tammeus

Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder. We constantly hear celebrities of all kinds referring to their idyllic early years in their hometown. To hear them, one has to wonder why anyone would ever leave such a friendly, fun-filled place.

Whatever hometown we come from, of whatever size, we tend to think our future lies elsewhere, in greener pastures beyond a distant fence. Only later do we realize that it wasn’t too bad at home and our affection for the place of our youth increases as the years go by.

We believe that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved to make a satisfactory adjustment to their loss.

Celebrate the memory of someone who has touched your life by publishing a memoriam in our passages section.

TOP 5 EASTER CANDIES!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs

Easter M&Ms

Jelly Beans

Chocolate Bunnies

Cadbury Creme Eggs

What does the word Easter mean? Another theory suggests that the word ‘Easter’ originated from the German word for ‘East,’ also meaning dawn.

The most common Easter tradition is dyeing Easter eggs, including a lot of fun activities such as egg rolling and egg hunts. Flying kites and games like leapfrog are also popular, as well as games associated with the Easter bunny.

Chocolate and other candy, especially bunny- or egg-shaped ones are widely consumed. Pastel colors like pink, baby blue, and lilac are associated with this day and are seen everywhere on clothing, dyed eggs, and at events.
