Make this a safe fireworks season
Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Aweinspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year.
Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections.
While summer might be the seasonoffireworks,it’simportant that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe.
• Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.
• Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.
• Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.
• Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
• Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.
• Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.
If not handled properly, fireworks can cause serious injuries to kids and adults. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave it to the professionals.

The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Big Shout Out!
Thank you everyone who was patient and asked if I needed help when my car broke down in Dansville recently. A big thank you to all. To the young gentleman who came back around after I was able to coast down to Agway parking lot, and helped push out of traffic lane. Kim E kept me calm while my hubby arrived, and Dansville police for their assistance.
It is tradition in our towns, communities, and country on Memorial Day to pay homage and appreciation for those who have sacrificed the most for our freedom and way of life. The simplest way our towns do this is by displaying our American flag on poles throughout the town’s center. It feels heartwarming to see these flags flying every year in every town as you drive through. Except one [local] town. This year, the town board and highway department decided to save some money and hang up used, old, faded, and torn flags on broken and bent poles. Every single flag was torn and faded! Some poles were bent towards the ground, some were pushed up flat against the utility pole, and some poles were placed with no flag at all. Just a pole. It is a disgrace to those who have served, those who have lost one who has served, and all of us! The town board has been notified and no response has come from them. Crickets... time for them to take care of the small things that bring us all together!
Main Street Woes
Our wonderful Main Street is full of potholes and destroyed pavement. NOT being addressed. [local road] is NOT safe due to the lack of repair to the potholes of winter. The tar filled in the holes is NOT working. The speed of the traffic on Main Street is NOT being addressed. The electric motorcycles on the streets going the wrong way or on the sidewalks or just being unsafe are NOT being addressed. The answers by the folks in charge of these issues are NOT appropriate and NOT demonstrating the care for the safety of our community.

Immunity to Rubella Does Not Equal Immunity to Measles
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a recent column of yours in which you said that everyone my age can assume we’ve had measles. I remember having measles in the second grade but have a vague memory of my parents calling it German measles, which I believe is rubella.
If a person has had either, do they have immunity to both types of measles? -- S.F.
Q. A.
ANSWER: If you were born before 1957, you are likely but not 100% sure to be immune to measles (sometimes called red measles) and mumps. However, rubella (German measles) is a different disease, and immunity to one does not ensure immunity to the other.
The biggest health concern with rubella is when a woman of childbearing age contracts it as the potential damage to her developing fetus can be severe. So, every woman who could get pregnant is tested for immunity at the earliest opportunity. All health care workers should have documented immunity to measles, mumps and rubella.
The United States is in the middle of a large measles outbreaknow,andthoselivinginanareawithtransmission should be sure that they are immune to measles. This can be done by checking blood antibody levels or giving an extra dose to those who have already been immunized (or two doses to those who have never been immunized).
At the time that I write this, there is no rubella outbreak in the U.S., but if there is, the advice will be similar to demonstrating immunity to rubella as it is for measles.
Always practice summer sun safety
When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Webster Students Restore 1986 K-Wagon and “Catch” a Passion for Learning

For 14 years, a 1986 Dodge Aries K Wagon sat rusting in a Westtown, NY barn with its windows down. During that time, the floors rusted and rodents infested the interior. But when Webster omas technology teacher Sean Campbell brought it to the school this past September, his automotive students got right to work. By mid-May, they had completed the bulk of the restoration in time to showcase it at the district’s Alumni Car Show.
In the last several years, Campbell and his students have restored three cars: an ‘89 Dodge Spirit ES Turbo, an ‘85 Omni GLH Turbo, and the current ‘86 Dodge Aries K Wagon. According to MarketWatch, the automotive industry faced a decline in technicians in 2020. To promote automotive careers, New York State provided financial assistance to improve classroom technology facilities and attract more students to hands-on career paths. As a result, Webster omas overhauled its entire tech department and expanded it by opening the new automotive shop in 2021.
Campbell says, “ e addition of the new shop expanded our capacityquiteabit.So,withfourworkingbays,Icannowdevote one of them to an ongoing project.” is year, the newest pet project for Campbell’s automotive students at Webster omas High School’s Titan Garage was the “K-Wagon.”
He says, “It’s o en hard to find a car that’s inexpensive enough to afford and still has the potential for restoration. Many old cars in this area require too much time and money to make the process feasible. is one was definitely on the edge.”
Initially, Campbell envisioned a “grocery getter rat rod powered by a Shelby-inspired 2.5L turbo engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.” For the uninitiated, a “rat rod” is a term used to describe a car that’s typically built on a budget and designed to appear unfinished or worn, giving it an edgy look.
Over the course of the school year, they removed the entire drivetrain, fuel system, interior, wiring, and harnesses. ey replaced the engine, restored the interior, and replaced the suspension and brakes. ey also added new paint but le some of the old paint to achieve that “rat rod” look.

Campbell says students enjoyed working on this project car all day long, coming in on their free periods and lunch blocks. He believes the love of learning is “caught, not taught.” Automotive students have a choice of three transportation-related classes. Anyone who wants to go above and beyond can take part in the real-life project car. While dozens of students worked on the car in addition to the regular curriculum, a smaller group of students showed up every day and did about 80% of the work under Campbell’s direct supervision. ese are the kids who have “caught” that love of learning, and he says, “I had one of those students come to me recently and say, ‘You know, Mr. Campbell, building cars is kind of like art – it’s a form of expression.’ And that about sums it up!”
Hunter Korts, a senior at Webster omas, is a member of the team that rebuilt the car and plans to enter the automotive industry later this year at Hoselton. Seeing the engine start for the first time was his favorite part of the project. Of course, there were challenges, and Korts says, “ e electrical was an absolute nightmare. I think I rewired over half the wiring harness myself and wired about every connection we installed under the dashboard.” en, tracking down replacement parts was no easy task.
Like Korts, 10th-grade automotive students Mason Snopkowski and Elyjah Peets-White agree it was

Of course, showing off their hard work at the Alumni Car Show in May was a bonus. In the car show’s first year, it drew about 20 cars, all of which were owned by former students. Now, in its eighth year, the show has grown to include more than 80 cars, with alumni from as far back as the 1960s in attendance. Snopkowski says, “ e experience was energizing, passionate, and sensational. It was a great opportunity to see all the omas graduates’ personal cars and their passion for them.” Peets-White adds that he especially enjoyed connecting with visitors by recounting the car’s backstory.

Campbell believes the popularity of the Alumni Car Show suggests that the automotive education students have received at the school has had a significant impact on the community, saying,
“The auto program is a home for many students who may not ‘fit’ anywhere else.
ey are o en very smart but may not do well learning from a book. ey are physically coordinated and have good spatial skills, but they may not be athletes. ese kids find a home in the Titan Garage – It is very humbling to play a small role in providing a space that allows students to get a taste of what may grow into a lifetime of passion.”

Why Vaccinate Your Pet
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t see the point of vaccinating a pet, especially if they’re kept inside for most of their lives. I’ve read that vaccines can cause more harm than good. It’s not natural to vaccinate. A dog or cat’s immune system should be able to handle most diseases. So why bother to vaccinate? --

DEAR NATURAL: You couldn’t be more wrong. A pet’s immune system is not an invulnerable shield against all attacks; it’s a constantly adapting system that has to “learn” what microbes and viruses are threats and which are not. Unfortunately, some diseases cause serious illness or death before a pet’s immune system can respond to them.
Part of what vaccines do is help a pet’s immune system learn about specific threats without causing harm to your pet.Vaccines contain a safe, weakened or killed version of a pathogen; when injected, the immune system produces antibodies to specifically attack that pathogen -- and they remember that in the future.
A disease like rabies, which is always fatal, is best fought off by a vaccine, which helps your immune system mount a frontline defense if a pet is exposed to it. For example, if a vaccinated cat is attacked and bitten by a rabid fox or raccoon, a veterinarian will give the cat a booster shot and monitor the cat in quarantine for 30 to 60 days. An unvaccinated cat who is attacked by a rabid animal might be euthanized immediately, or quarantined for up to 4 months.
Because there is no such thing as 100% prevention fro exposure to various diseases, even your indoor pets need to have their core vaccinations.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes. The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks. And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

The dangers of bagged salad greens
Sometimes we just want to take the easy path and quickly grab a few things for dinner. Bagged salad greens are often on our list -- but it’s the last place we should be taking a shortcut in meal prep.
Between contaminated water in the fields and many people involved in the processing, handling and storage, food safety experts are pointing to bagged salads as the item near the top of the list for safety concerns and outbreaks of E. coli. And that makes it a real risk for seniors or anyone with a compromised immune system.
How to avoid the dangers of E. coli? Buy whole head lettuce instead of bagged and throw away the outer leaves. Rinse the lettuce under running cold water and dry it with paper towels. Besides the force of the water during rinsing, the drying with paper towels can also help remove the E. coli contamination. Do the same with other leafy greens such as spinach.
However, if you do want to buy packaged salad greens, the dilemma comes when the package claims that they have been pre-washed. “Triple washed! Ready to eat!” the package will proclaim. The question is: Should you believe it? Or should you go ahead and wash it? The experts, including the FDA and USDA, say not to wash it. The reason, they say, is that we at home are more likely to contaminate the greens ourselves with a dirty sink.
People on blogs across the internet are insulted, however, being told they would contaminate food in their own kitchens. They intend to wash all produce, even if the package says it’s not needed and even if it’s organic from a farmer’s market.

Lemon Drizzle
Cupcakes
Makes 12
Cupcakes:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup self-raising flour
Zest of 1 lemon
Drizzle:
Juice of 2 lemons
5 1/2 tablespoons sugar
LemonButtercream:
1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/4 cups powdered sugar
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Sprinkles
Lemon Zest
Preheat the oven to 350° F and get 12 cupcake liners ready. Beat the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, self-raising flour and lemon zest and mix until combined. Spoon the mix evenly into the cupcake liners and bake for 18-22 minutes until they are baked through and springy to the touch.
Mix together the lemon juice and sugar for the drizzle in a bowl. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, carefully spoon the drizzle over the cupcakes, then leave them to cool fully on a wire rack while you make the buttercream.
Beat the butter until smooth; this can take a couple of minutes. Add the powdered sugar in two batches, beating well after each addition, then add the lemon juice and beat again.
Pipe or spread the buttercream onto your cupcakes, then sprinkle each one with some sprinkles and lemon zest.
