How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.
Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms.
Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones.
Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean.
Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.
Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

And one place is the website Good News Network (www. goodnewsnetwork.org). GNN, started in 1997, currently has 21,000 good news stories from around the world. Categories range from life, to gardening, to health, business and more.
There’s a free app for the phone, and if you don’t like to see ads, you can pay a yearly fee of $15 to get rid of them. Or click the “Subscribe” button to get a free bit of good news in your email each day.
There’s even a GNN book: “And Now, The Good News: 20 Years of Inspiring News Stories,” by Geri Weis-Corbley, available on Amazon in paperback. The reviews for the book are great, saying that the short stories are real mood-lifters. I’ll be ordering it. Here’s an example: The bank that lost 66 of its employees on 9/11 have paid to put all those employees’ kids through college. How great is that?!
Here’s another one from the book: A piece of a family farm was being sold at auction and a very young family member wanted to bid and hopefully win back the property. By common agreement, all the other 200 farmers at the auction stayed silent while the young family member was bidding.He won back the family’s farm land.
The Good News Network isn’t the only bright spot. Positive News (www.positive.news) will send a good news email once a week. The categories range from society to science to economics and more. It’s British, which makes it even more interesting.

Dog Makes Odd Breathing Noise
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, I had my 9-year-old, part-poodle/Maltese dog’s teeth cleaned. The vet had to pull two teeth as well. Since this was done, “Scoobie” seems to make an odd noise as he is breathing. I feel like this is due to the tube they put down his throat as they cleaned his teeth. When I got him home, he had a hacking cough, which subsided about three days later. But the noise he makes when breathing continues. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, though. I like our vet a lot and hate to question him, so hopefully you can help me out or let me know what I could ask the vet. -- Valeeta R., Montgomery, Alabama

In fact, you should go ahead and bring Scoobie in to have thevetcheckoutthenoiseinpersonsohecanruleoutany serious issues.Pets that are put under general anesthesia for certain procedures (such as the tooth scaling Scoobie had) can develop complications afterward, ranging from stress reactions to major health emergencies. Don’t be worried about bothering your vet -- your dog’s health is the most important thing here.
Ask lots of questions, and insist on straightforward answers from the vet -- not answers designed just to make you feel better.If afterward you feel that you didn’t receive satisfactory answers, or if Scoobie doesn’t improve, take your dog to another vet for a second opinion.

Examining the Common and Available Treatments for Gallstones &body mind

DEAR DR. ROACH: What advice do you have for the treatment of gallstones? -- N.W.
ANSWER: Gallstones are common (6% of men and 9% of women will get one over a lifetime) and are mostly composed of bile salts and cholesterol. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and the risk of complications. Depending on the size and composition of a person’s gallstones, there are different therapies available.
Themostcommontreatmentforsymptomaticgallstonesissurgery. Surgery is highly effective, although there are complications such as bleeding, infection and leaks. About 10% of people will develop diarrhea after surgery, which tends to get better over weeks to months but sometimes requires treatment with a bileacid-binding drug like cholestyramine. Surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means faster healing times.
For people who are not good candidates for surgery (such as those with significant medical illnesses) or people who do not want surgery, there are other options. Medications given by mouth, such as ursodiol (Actigall), can dissolve gallstones, but this can take a long time, usually several years. People with smaller stones that are mostly made of cholesterol can be good candidates for this treatment. However, it is not 100% effective.
Another option is a tube placed into the gallbladder through the abdominal wall to drain bile, which is also sometimes done to remove stones, but I have seldom seen it done. Similarly, shockwave treatment, which is commonly used for kidney stones, is rarely used but can be a reasonable option in people with only one or two stones.

Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Aweinspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year.
Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections.
While summer might be the seasonoffireworks,it’simportant that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe.
• Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.
• Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.
• Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.
• Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
• Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.
• Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.
If not handled properly, fireworks can cause serious injuries to kids and adults. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave it to the professionals.

I am so grateful for our libraries. I have the fondest memories of weekly trips to the library with my father. Now I can share that experience with my grandson. We attend the weekly story time at two libraries. He is able to enjoy fabulous stories, engage in craft projects, and/or dance and play with other children. Of course, libraries offer more than that. They provide internet access for those who do not have it at home. They provide employment resources for those looking for jobs. They offer a variety of fun classes and build community. Of course, you can always find a good read there. Our communities are enriched by our libraries. And thank you to the librarians who make it happen.

A Jazz Legacy from Rochester to the World

Chuck Mangione, the beloved Grammy-winning jazz musician from Rochester, died peacefully in his sleep at home on July 22, 2025 at age 84. Known globally for his flugelhorn melodies and signature feel-good sound, Mangione was also a prominent figure in Rochester’s music scene and a source of local pride for decades. Mangione, whose given name was Charles Frank Mangione, was born on November 29, 1940. He and his older brother, Gap, grew up in a jazz-loving Italian-American family on Rochester’s northeast side. Jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey were regular guests at the Mangione home, and it wasn’t long before Chuck picked up the trumpet and began playing alongside his brother in what became “ e Jazz Brothers.”
A er graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 1963, Mangione’s career quickly gained momentum. He joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he honed his skills in bebop style jazz, and later returned to Eastman as director of its jazz ensemble from 1968 to 1972, helping to lay the foundation for what would become one of the country’s premier collegiate jazz programs.
While rooted in traditional jazz, Mangione carved his own path by blending classical, pop, and folk elements into a smooth, melodic style that became his trademark. at distinctive sound reached mainstream audiences in 1977 with the release of his album Feels So Good. e title track becameoneofthemostrecognizableinstrumentalrecordings in modern history, climbing to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the adult contemporary chart. It was an unexpected hit for a jazz artist, and its soaring flugelhorn melody helped propel the album to double platinum status. Mangione had already earned a Grammy in 1976 for his composition “Bellavia,” and he’d go on to win a second in 1979 for the soundtrack to e Children of Sanchez. He also composed “Give It All You Got” as the official theme of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He delivered that performance live during the Games’ closing ceremony, further cementing his role as a widely recognized figure.

In the late 1990s, a new audience met Mangione through the animated series King of the Hill, where he played a cartoon version of himself. e running
gag that he could never stop playing “Feels So Good” became a pop culture joke and Mangione leaned into it with his trademark self-deprecating humor. His appearance on the show made him instantly recognizable to a younger generation and kept his music in the public ear long a er its commercial peak.
Over the course of six decades, Mangione released more than 30 albums and received 14 Grammy nominations. Some jazz critics occasionally dismissed his work as overly commercial, but fans never did. His melodies turned up in film scores, television shows, and even Olympic ceremonies. For many, his music offered comfort, as it was upli ing, joyful, and unmistakably his own.
Chuck Mangione’s death leaves a silence in the jazz world, but his legacy plays on. From Eastman practice rooms to packed stadiums, and from vinyl records to animated sitcoms, his music crossed boundaries and brought a smile to generations of listeners. Rochester and the world mourn his passing and celebrate a life richly lived in melody and spirit.
