For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.
Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. Avon American Legion Post Honors Fallen WWI Soldier, Joseph Gallipeau

e Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 was named the Avon Post for Joseph Gallipeau, an Avon resident killed in action in France in 1918. His biography will be presented at the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26th.

David and Viola Carrie Gallipeau of Lakeville welcomed their third child and first son, Joseph Leo Gallipeau, on October 12, 1898. ey moved to Avon when Joseph was about 10 years old and Joseph lived on Wadsworth Avenue for many years with his little brother, Spencer, his two older sisters, Ruth and Eunice, and his younger sister, Sophronia. David was a barber in town and Viola was a homemaker. Joseph worked as a messenger boy for the Railroad as a teenager. e family lost Spencer to a car accident in 1915 when he was 10.
On July 15, 1917 at 18 years old, Joseph enlisted in the Regular Army Division at the beginning of the World War and was trained at Camp Syracuse. He was one of the first Avon boys to enlist. On September 7, 1917, he went overseas on the USS Huron as a Private First Class. In October, while stationed in France, he turned 19. He was assigned to Company D, 23rd Infantry 2nd Division.
During his service, Joseph was in the trenches for many months before he was killed in action on June 6, 1918 at Belleau Wood on the deadliest day of e Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1 - June 26, 1918). Joseph and so many others that day gave their lives in a wheat field on their way to Belleau Wood. His mother received a telegram informing her of his death on July 24, 1918.
In 1919, e American Legion first applied for an Avon charter and chose the name Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294. American Legion Posts are named for a veteran(s) from the community who gave their life in service to their country. Post 294 received their permanent charter in February 1925.
Joseph was first buried in France, but his body was brought back to America aboard the U.S.A.T. Cantigny in late September 1921. e body was then brought to the home of his parents on Wadsworth Avenue. A full military funeral was held on a Saturday morning at St. Agnes Church in the charge of the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post, including a mounted guard of honor, a firing squad from Troop M and the 54th Regiment Band of Rochester. e Legion, members of the Women’s Relief Corps, the G.A.R., Spanish War Veterans, and men who were on the border were in line. Schoolchildren also marched. Joseph’s body was reburied in Avon’s St. Agnes Cemetery near his little brother, Spencer.
On August 26, 1928, the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 applied for a headstone from the War Department for Joseph L. Gallipeau. It was delivered to the St. Agnes Cemetery in January 1929 and placed next to the family headstone.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 53-year-old healthy male, and I always request to check my PSA levels each year. My 57-year-old brother’s new doctor denied his request for a routine PSA check on their initial visit. She said that the test now produces more false positives as well as unnecessary procedures and surgeries, so she said “no” and wouldn’t order it.
Are primary care physicians discouraging the PSA test for older men now? I don’t get any push back when I request to check it. Also, I heard the digital rectal exam (DRE) isn’t as valid anymore for screening. His new doctor also did not do a DRE. I’m curious to know your thoughts on the current DRE and PSA screening guidelines for primary care physicians. -- C.C.
Q. A.
ANSWER: The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a screening blood test for cancer, and the recommendation for its use has gone back and forth over decades since it’s been introduced. Since screening and prevention are my areas of expertise, I have followed the literature on the use of PSAs and other screening tests very closely.
In my opinion, your brother’s doctor was wrong to refuse to order the test. She was right that it does produce false positives, which could potentially lead to unnecessary surgeries; however, there are good ways to reduce unnecessary treatment while still ordering the test, which can save lives.
Most prostate cancer is so slow-growing that it is likely never to bother a man until he dies from something else. So, we don’t want to operate on these relatively indolent cancers because there’s a possibility of a serious side effect from surgery, such as urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction (neither of which any man wants).
Before operating, careful testing is done on the prostate cancer, including imaging (ideally by an MRI scan), a biopsy with pathological examination, and often genetic testing of the tumor. Along with the PSA results, we can separate prostate cancer into categories of very low risk and low risk versus intermediate and high risk.
Once we have the diagnosis, we can make good recommendations so that we can identify the rare high-risk cancers while not unnecessarily treating the low-risk cancers. Without screenings, we can’t keep rare, small and aggressive tumors from spreading until it’s too late.
Now I have to tell you that 57 isn’t so much “older” than 53, at least from the perspective of prostate cancer screening. The most important time for prostate cancer screening is ages 50-70. There are some men who benefit from starting screening at a younger age (those with a family history, Black men, and men with certain genetic risks), and there are some who benefit from starting screening when they’re older than 70.
The DRE does not add much to the results of the blood test. Approximately 1% of men will get prostate cancer that is diagnosed by the DRE as part of combined screening. Many men will refuse screening if it includes a rectal exam, and it’s estimated that 90% of abnormal rectal exams will be false positives. On the other hand, I’ve had instances where quite a few men don’t feel like they have been adequately screened unless they get the DRE.
I have a discussion with every man about PSA testing, and I recommend it for most men in this age group. But I only rarely have had a man say that he doesn’t want it once he understands that we won’t recommend surgery unless the combination of all the studies show this is a high-risk situation.

I am thankful every time I go shopping, for people who leave carts out in the parking lot. To those who think failure to return a grocery cart to a cart stall are lazy, please consider a different perspective. I have a bad hip, bad back, bad knee, bad foot (all can make walking difficult); and asthma (can leave me very short of breath). I have a handicap tag, but the spaces are often full. If I cannot park close to the store or right by a cart stall, I look for a spot where someone, for whatever reason, left their cart, which I use as a substitute walker. After shopping and returning to my car, I often have too much pain to take a cart to a stall and return to my car without the cart to support me. Essentially, I return it to the spot where I found it and say a silent “thank you” to the person who left it there for me to use.

Keep water sanitary. Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so that it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbor any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The pool equipment company Pahlen says the ideal water pH is 7.4 because that is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes, and it also supports good chlorine disinfection. Color me shocked. The reason: I thought I was the only one, or at least one of a very few. Little did I know that so many other seniors are also playing video games -- and that more than half of those are females.
When asked why they play, 77% of seniors responded that they play video games to relax, 51% to have fun and 65% to keep minds sharp. There’s social interaction, which helps combat isolation. We can improve memory, problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination. We can slow cognitive decline, reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and improve mental flexibility. In other words, playing video games can be good for us.
How to get started if you don’t already play? I started playing video games right after I got my first computer, back in 1994. While I’ve gone through several computers over the years, I still have some of the original games, and they’re now classics. For several years I had a membership that sent me a new game every month as well.
To get started now, if you’d like to trying playing video games, begin with something easy, either for your computer or tablet. You have so much to choose from. There are word games and puzzles. There are classic games where you can play chess against the computer. There are trivia games, community builders (you build an online town) and shooter games where you kill enemies or monsters. You can play by yourself or in groups online.
One place to start is the AARP Games Center (aarp.org/games), where you can play dozens of games for free and even more if you’re a member.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

I can’t afford to take my two Dachshunds, “Kili” and “Fili,” to the vet for their annual checkups and shots. And I’m terrified what will happen if one of them gets sick. Do you know of any way I can cut expenses for pet care? -- Dave M., Santa Monica, California
DEAR DAVE: I completely understand. These are difficult economic times, especially on a fixed income. But there are lower-cost pet care options available.
First, contact Kili and Fili’s veterinarian and explain your situation. Ask if they offer any discounts or payment options for care, or if they have any recommendations for free or low-cost care. Vets will work with you to keep your dogs healthy.
Next, contact the local Humane Society or shelter and ask the same questions. Shelters want pets to stay with their owners and have resources and contacts to help make their care easier and more affordable.
Ask about low-cost or free pet vaccination events (often called shot clinics). These take place in many towns and cities at least once a year. For less than half the cost of a routine visit (and sometimes free), these clinics give pets their required vaccines and may offer additional services like physical exams and blood tests. These are frequently announced online, but you may be able to locate one by contacting your town office or the local shelter.

Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR
According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.
GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY
Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished.
Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.
Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once.
Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.
Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.
Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.
Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
