If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re ableand separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

In today’s digital world, getting kids to pick up a book can be a challenge. While reading offers countless benefits, from boosting creativity to improving vocabulary, many children are spending less time reading for fun. Parents who want to encourage their kids to read more can try several effective strategies to foster a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
Start by setting limits on screen time to help shift their attention to other activities like reading. Becoming a reading role model by showing your own love for books is another powerful way to inspire kids. Make books more accessible by taking them to the library, buying books from their favorite genres, or introducing digital reading options like e-readers. Finally, don’t worry about the content—they don’t have to read classic novels! As long as it’s age-appropriate, let them enjoy whatever books capture their interest, whether comic books or magazines.

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES
Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliancesandplentyofstoragespace.

Campfire Safety
87% of wildfires were caused by humans in 2019, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. You can help prevent wildfires while camping by following these safety tips from the USDA Forest Service:
DO
• Make sure your campfire is a safe distance from tents or anything that could burn.
• Create a ring around the campfire using rocks, and make sure the area surrounding the ring is cleared of leaves and debris.
• Keep pets, kids and playing a safe distance from the campfire.
• Allow the campfire to burn out into ashes whenever possible.
• Use water to drown campfire ashes, then stir and add more water until the ashes are cold.
DON’T
• Don’t start a campfire if conditions are windy.
• Don’t bury warm coals or ashes in a campfire pit.
• Don’t use flammable liquids to start a campfire.
• Don’t burn glass, cans, plastic or garbage.
• Don’t leave a burning campfire or warm ashes unattended.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE
Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest. Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion can take a toll on crops and livestock.

Honoring Veterans One Mission at a Time
“I’ve had family members come up and say, ‘I’ve always been close to my mom or dad, but this trip has taken it to a new place.’”
KIM GOULD
When Honor Flight Rochester Mission 89 took off in early June, veterans boarding the flight were in for a surprise when they saw Freedom One sitting on the tarmac. Southwest Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 featuring the 50 stars and 13 stripes of the American flag hosted more than 60 veterans on a mission to visit the war memorials in Washington, D.C.
While the veterans of Honor Flight always fly Southwest, this was the first time the airline brought Freedom One. Launched in 2008, Honor Flight Rochester is the area’s local hub for the Honor Flight Network, a national nonprofit organization operating since 2005.
According to Kim Gould, incoming president and co-founder of Honor Flight Rochester, a 2008 article in the Democrat and Chronicle looking for volunteers to start a hub in the area prompted Kim and her husband, Jeff, to get involved. “My husband looked at me and said, ‘We should do it in honor of our fathers,’ who were both World War II veterans,” she says. Donations funded the first flight, which took off in October 2008 with ten veterans aboard. e mission? To get every veteran to see the memorials in D.C. at no cost to them. Since then, they’ve flown more than 4,000 veterans. Rich Stewart, outgoing Honor Flight Rochester President, says, “ ere’s a magnetism about Honor Flight. It caught fire very early.”
To go on a mission, veterans can apply through the website. According to Stewart, outgoing vets are given preference based on “earliest eras first, postmarked within the era, catastrophic health issue in any era.” e organization typically runs six flights from April to June and another three in September and October.
AlthoughBuffalotrieditout,RochesteriscurrentlytheonlyHonor Flight hub east of the Mississippi that stays overnight. Gould says that much of the “magic of the trip” happens in the evening. When an Honor Flight sets off, the veterans, each accompanied by a companion, a “guardian,” arrive at 4 a.m. A er they check in, they enjoy breakfast and then it’s time to fly. A er they land in Baltimore-Washington International Airport, a veteran motorcycle group called the BWI Brownies escorts the group to their first memorial visit of the day.
STEWART AND GOULD
THE FREEDOM ONE
While there’s no specific order, veterans are driven by bus to a variety of memorials, including the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Air Force Memorial, U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery where they visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Back at the hotel, they enjoy a sitdown dinner, where they’re honored with a ceremony. en, the mic opens up for anyone who wants to share.
Gould says a er dinner is “the magic time,” full of bonding and camaraderie. During this time, many veterans really open up about their experiences, even for the first time ever. Gould says, “I’ve had family members come up and say, ‘I’ve always been close to my mom or dad, but this trip has taken it to a new place.’ It opens the door for people who have had a hard time sharing.”
It’s also not unusual for veterans who served together and haven’t seen each other in years to run into each other on an Honor Flight, or people who went to grade school together and haven’t seen each other since to recognize one another.
A er breakfast the next day, they’re back on their way to the airport for the return trip. But the journey doesn’t end there. Back in Rochester, they’re greeted by a welcoming line as they disembark. With family, kids, VFW members, active military, the Honor Flight
Dolls, bands playing, and more, the appreciation for their service is palpable.
Once the veterans, guardians, and crew make their way to the International Room, entertainment begins, with speakers, singers, and the color guard.
Aside from the camaraderie the veteransmayfindonthetrip,Stewart also says the program is a thank you, which, for some such as the Vietnam veterans, is long overdue, as he says, “What they experienced when they came back was beyond the dark side.”
As of July 1, Stewart will step down a er roughly twelve years as president, and Gould will take the reins. Of course, as a co-founder, Gould already has the experience and expertise to oversee Honor Flight Rochester, but her decision to step up is more personal: Gould and Jeff helped found the hub because they wanted to honor their fathers. Now, Gould wants to carry on the work they felt so strongly about, saying, “I lost [my father] unexpectedly and tragically, and it’s important to carry on the dream we set out together.”

Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake.

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

PIGS ARE SMARTER THAN YOU THINK
Pigs are valued not just for their meat, but for their brains. Studies have shown pigs can use mirrors, solve puzzles, and even learn basic commands on par with dogs. If you’ve ever raised one, you know they’re curious, vocal, and full of personality. And yes, they love a good belly rub.

Phantom pregnancy in dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside.
He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York
DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.
Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.
The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.
MOXIE came into our lives 6 years ago on a cold winter day. His mom cat dropped him off on our deck when he was just a small baby for us to care for. What a gi it was.Right in time for the holidays. It’s a long story that some day I’d like to write a book about. But for today I’d just like to say he’s my cuddle bug and we just adore him.

Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.

Bridge Closure
The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.

ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones. Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).
Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).
My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.
Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.
If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The peace of avoiding the daily news
One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.
At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.
Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.
That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.
Here are a few things I accomplished:
I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch.
A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours. This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.
I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.
That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted.
If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful.

Log flume rides allow thrillseekers to extend their fun into the water. The modern log flume may be traced back to old mill rides that used tracks to guide boats through tunnels and hills. Modern log flumes are much more splash-intensive.
