STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* A newly sworn-in Barack Obama visited the U.K. in 2009 and presented some rather curious gifts to the prime minister and queen: 25 DVDs to David Cameron, and an iPod Classic to the then-octogenarian Elizabeth II. Cameron returned the gesture with some “wellies” and Hobgoblin ale.

Being Insistent About a Scan Saves the Life Of a Cancer Patient &body mind
DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one.
Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.
This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.
It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. -- F.B.
ANSWER: : Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS
The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. The National Association of Realtors says homeowners get about 73 percent of their replacement window investment back when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the home. It’s important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the divided light pattern (the number of panes in each window) with the original windows.

Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.
Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup® , grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matterinthesoil.Anothersignofa possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.
Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.
Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE:
Webster-Based Youth Ministry Group Heads to North Carolina to Help Rebuild
Hurricane Helene ripped a wrathful path through many southern U.S. states more than six months ago, and there’s so much work to do. at’s why the Webster Methodist Church’s youth ministry mission trip is scheduled to head to Asheville, North Carolina this summer to help the community rebuild.
SKIDMORE WILL GO TO ASHEVILLE THIS SUMMER FOR THE CHURCH’S MISSION TRIP.
“I’ve been doing mission trips all my life, all my ministry life – that’s 40 years now, and the worst kept secret is you go to help people, but you end up getting so much out of it yourself.”
RICK LADUE
Led by Rick LaDue, Lead Pastor, and Wendy McVeigh, Director of Family Ministries, a group of up to 15 will board two 12-passenger vans in late June and head south for about a week. With people still living in temporary housing and tents, they said this will be a construction mission. McVeighsaid,“We’llbedoingwhateverisneededwhen we arrive. It could be doing roofing, drywall, painting, cleaning up debris, rebuilding [...] whatever they ask of us.”
Typically, a mix of ages attend from 6-12th grades, but this year, 10-year-old twin sisters will also attend with their parents. So far, seven youths have signed up to go. While the cost for each person is $1,000, through fundraising efforts, they’re able to offer the trip for $60 to the kids – as long as they participate in the fundraisers.
Some of the fundraising the kids will do included stuffing more than 1,500 Easter eggs and making gi bags for an Easter egg hunt. e kids also set up the egg hunt, directed traffic, helped with cra s and face painting, and cleaned up the event. ey’ll also plan a chicken barbecue drive-thru in June, and the kids will help prep food in the church kitchen and help sell tickets. LaDue said the congregation will participate through donations to help bring the cost down for the mission trip.
When they get to Asheville, they’ll be lodging in an elementary school. Classrooms will be set up with bunk beds and air mattresses, and they’ll bring in a shower trailer. “It’s going to be a little rustic,” McVeigh said. While they’ll pack many of their meals for traveling, TEAMeffort, an organization that helps organize youth ministry trips, supplies meals once they’re there.
e church organizes a youth mission trip every year or two. Two years ago, they went to Kentucky to help repair housing in poverty-stricken areas. During another trip, McVeigh said her daughter, who was 10 at the time, was in a harness on a roof hammering shingles. A er seeing a small child repair a roof, a person walking by told them they were now inspired to do their own roof. LaDue joked that if he quit his job, he could be a roofer, he’s gained so much experience from many years of mission trips. For brothers Colton and Paxton Butler, this will be their first trip. Both brothers said they look forward to getting to work. “Helping people makes me a better person, and it helps them too,” said 12-yearold Colton. Expressing a similar sentiment, Paxton, age 13, said, “I think this trip will make me a more
thoughtful person, and I will be more open to helping other people in the future.”
Beyond helping people, the youth learn real-life skills. Recently, McVeigh’s children helped replace flooring in her own home, and she said they did a good job because they’d done it before.
Of course, the youth have fun while they’re on the trip, with a fun activity usually planned for the return trip. However, one of the greatest impacts McVeigh and LaDue have experienced and observed is the relationships built during the trips. at’s why they specifically choose trips they know will be relational. McVeigh said she also believes it’s beneficial for the kids to see people in different environments, where people face serious challenges.
“I’ve been doing mission trips all my life, all my ministry life – that’s 40 years now, and the worst kept secret is you go to help people, but you end up getting so much out of it yourself,” LaDue said. “ e feelings you get from helping people in need and feeling like you made a difference in someone’s life, it’s just irreplaceable.”

Car Accident Witness
[A couple months ago] my vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road while I was stopped at a signal light. Because my focus was on the red light I did not see the vehicle coming toward me going thru the red light and was blindsided at the impact, with the car then continuing on to collide head on with a 3rd vehicle. She was kind enough to follow this vehicle for quite a distance knowing it would cause an accident and to speak with me and the police as a witness. I am extremely grateful for the time she spent to set the record straight in which some explanations as to who is at fault or what actually happened can be twisted around by some insurance companies.
Grave Concerns
On a recent visit to my parent’s grave to place an Easter wreath, I was saddened to see so many dead X-mas wreaths and plants still on graves in April. We’re blessed to be able to leave flowers, flags and objects as some cemeteries don’t allow it at all. People need to be more considerate and respectful of the deceased and their families and remove the dead plants in a timely manner or replace any faded artificial flowers and flags. The presence of litter detracts from the peaceful and solemn atmosphere of the cemetery.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The list of food recalls is growing
It seems that there’s one recall after the other lately, mostly for our foods. To stay safe with what we eat, we need to keep an eye on those recalls. Some of them have been scarily bizarre. The latest ones include pieces of plastic in sausages, wood in frozen meals, stones in chocolate bars, botulism in juice and tree nuts in cheesecake.
Then there are the undeclared allergens, like the milk that was in tortilla chips and chicken salad, which can affect people who have a dairy allergy. And we have the hot sauce with undeclared sulfites, which can seriously affect people who have an allergy to sulfites.
Then, in a potentially very dangerous mistake for those with heart and blood pressure problems, ground coffee was labeled as decaffeinated when it actually had caffeine.
And when you thought you’d recover from an illness with some over-thecounter help, we had a cough and cold medication recalled for being contaminated.
Humans aren’t the only ones to be affected by the wrong ingredients in our foods. A recent recall was for a dog snack that was contaminated with salmonella.
Nobody likes extra email to wade through, but in the case of recalls, we really do need to pay attention.
Signing up for email notifications is the best thing we can do right now, especially with the increase in the number of recalls. Go to www.recalls.gov/ food.html, www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls and www.foodsafety.gov to sign up for email alerts. Or if you really don’t want extra emails in your inbox, make a point of going to those sites once a week and scrolling through the list of new recalls.
Even if you think you probably don’t have a recalled item, if you’ve ever bought it in the past, check your freezer and cabinets. That item might still be there.
I tend to like antique things. Something can be old, but it can be timeless. ~CeeLo Green

Contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained. Although they’re not likely to be as motivated by praise as dogs, cats can respond to food treatsparticularly something soft and smelly. However, that may take some practice as, according to Petfinder, cats are less instinctively driven to work in partnership with humans. But those tasty treats may inspire them to stay and come and even use a toilet in lieu of a litter box.

Is this puppy ready for a long hike?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a beautiful pup at about 3 months old this winter. Now that the weather is warming up and “Blondie” is about 6 months old, I can’t wait to start going on hikes with her. How far can a puppy that age walk? Do you have any safety tips? – Carl J., via email
DEAR CARL: Blondie sounds like an amazing pup! With the correct training, she will eventually be able to accompany you on some hikes – but not this season.
Puppies at 6 months of age should only take limited walks, ranging from five to 10 minutes max, on level ground. Don’t take them farther – pushing them too soon can cause a host of physical problems because their growth plates haven’t fused.
Most experts recommend lengthening walks gradually starting from about 9 months. For longer distances over uneven ground, and when training dogs to carry their own panniers, wait until they are 12 to 18 months old.
So, you won’t be able to take Blondie with you on day hikes this year – unless you carry her. There are special “sport sacks” just for carrying small- to medium-size dogs. Think of it as a fitness challenge for you, and a way for your pup to learn to love the outdoors.
In the meantime, you can work on Blondie’s obedience training. It’s critical that she respond immediately when you call her, especially out on hikes. She should also be well socialized to people and other dogs – this prevents a lot of grief on the trail. Right now is the perfect time to do that, and to bond with your dog so that you have fun whether you’re outdoors or not.

WEAR A BASE LAYER. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that wicks away moisture. There are even some that are made to be water repellent and stain resistant with anti-odor properties for those in warmer climes. Since this is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin, you want something that will allow moisture to escape as you sweat.
