SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a winter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s worth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeowners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS

Maintain appliances and replace older ones. While reducing reliance on energy-thirsty appliances is a great way to reduce energy consumption, no one needs to throw away their refrigerators. Instead, maintain appliances so they are not forced to work harder, and thereby consume more energy, to function. Routinely clean the filters on window air conditioners, replacing them if they’re worn down. In addition, have HVAC units serviced annually to ensure they’reoperatingatpeakcapacity. Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY

Crowdcontrol:Localrestaurantstendtobesmallerandmoreintimatethan many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Being Insistent About a Scan Saves the Life Of a Cancer Patient

DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one. Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.

This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.

It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. -- F.B.

ANSWER: : Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

A New Internet Scam

I’d thought I could identify an internet scam when it showed up, but there’s a new one out now. It’s slick and potentially dangerous if you fall for it.

It’s called the CAPTCHA scam. CAPTCHA stands for “completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart.” They are those annoying interruptions when you’re trying to access a webpage. You typically have to click a box to prove you’re not a robot. Then you have to type in the skewed letters on the screen and click all the parts of the streetlight, or car or bus or whatever the image is. All this before it allows you to go to the page you’re trying to see.

The newest scam is that these CAPTCHAs are spreading malware in your computer with every step.

This is a sneaky scam because we’ve been lulled into complacency about those CAPTCHA verification tests, and we might tend to just click on it to get through it. Things are different now. If you come across a CAPTCHA, check the address of the webpage by looking for “https” to be sure that little “s” is present.

Here’s how the scams work:

You might be instructed to download a file or to press certain keys.

Or, after completing the first step, you might end up on a fake webpage that looks a lot like the one you were trying to get to.

Once you get through the steps, malware is installed on your computer without you knowing, and its job is to hunt for personal information on your machine.

If you suddenly get a CAPTCHA popping up when you don’t expect it, back out of the page. Don’t go there.

Even if you’re sure you’re safe, don’t download anything that a CAPTCHA steers you to.

And as always, keep good virus protection on your computer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

PLANTING THE SEED OF SELF-EXPRESSION:

Poetry Trail at Webster Arboretum Highlights Local Literary Voices

Along the magnolia plantings and peonies, looping around a gazebo, nature trails at Kent Park’s Webster Arboretum offer a respite during the warmer months. When spring blooms this year, visitors will be in for a poetic treat with the installation of the Webster Poetry Trail.

Scheduled to be completed later this month, the trail has been a 40year dream for Ron Friedman. e Henrietta resident (formerly of Webster) once owned a nursery where he’d host poetry readings, and the idea of a trail that displayed poetry has stayed with him ever since. When he discovered the Webster Arboretum, he knew it would be the perfect place for his dream to be realized. So, he proposed the idea in 2023 and secured $5,000 in funding soon a er from the Rochester Area Community Foundation through Community Impact and Clara T. Wolfard Funds.

“ e scope is pretty broad. I wanted to have poets of all ages throughout the Finger Lakes represented,” Friedman said. “ ere’s so much talent through the Finger Lakes. Some of it is undiscovered or undervalued. I wanted [the poetry trail] to be pretty representative of a broad geography.”

So, Friedman, along with two interns from SUNY Brockport, got word out on social media that they sought poem submissions. ey formed a committee of local poets and Arboretum board members who reviewed the submitted poems and picked the ones that stood out. Of about 35 poems, twelve were selected to go on the trail. Since they can only install six at a time, the poems not on the trail will travel to high schools and libraries and will be switched out a er six months. One poem, called “If I Were a Butterfly,” is particularly special to Friedman because it was written by a group of pre-K students in Webster Schroeder High School.

Jennifer Strege, a teacher librarian at the high school, said Friedman contacted her about the poetry contest, and she sent information to English teachers and high school students. But then she thought, why not submit the pre-K poems?

“We had previously read animal poems, noting how each tapped into the senses. en, in small groups with an adult scribe, kids imagined what they would do if they were a particular creature. is group envisioned themselves as butterflies, and we loved their thoughtful and o en silly responses,” Strege said. “I think poetry is fitting for young kids, because they already express themselves abstractly; they aren’t intimidated by figurative language. Young children aren’t inhibited by notions about what form poetry should take. We get from them a completely unself-conscious expression of their ideas.”

Friedman has organized poetry readings at various locations to attract interest in the Poetry Trail. Most recently, on April 2, poets Jae Newman from Rochester and Nancy Dafoe from Central NY read at the Webster Recreation Center.

Grace Hall, a graduate student in English Literature at SUNY Brockport and one of the interns who has helped, is excited to see the trail in place. Hall created an online presence for the trail on Instagram, Facebook, and a website, and she’s helped with the advertising for the poetry readings.

Hall said, “I hope the trail can be a place for community members to go to think and find a space where they can enjoy a quiet and calm moment in nature. It could also be a space for students to learn about the connections that exist between the written world and nature. I hope it continues to be a space where connections occur, as it has already allowed for many connections between community members.”

In anticipation of the signs being completed, Friedman and Donna Schayder, a master gardener of Monroe County, recently walked the grounds and identified where the signs will go. Signage will be made of a weather-resistant aluminum composite and created by Webster’s McAllister Signs. While Friedman ordered the materials needed for the bases, a team from Webster Parks and Recreation is storing, cutting, and installing them.

With installation approaching, events are lining up. On April 28, a high school group from Olean will visit the Arboretum, with Rochester poet and retired Hilton High School English teacher David Ruekberg serving as guest instructor. Once the trail opens and the weather is nice, Friedman said they’ll host a dedication event. And to honor the youngest poets, they’ll host an event just for them.

“Families are really excited about it. I hope to plant the seed that writing is a special form of self-expression you can take with you throughout your lifetime. When everything else fails, they can still have that,” Friedman said.

Strege, who hasn’t seen the children much since they moved onto kindergarten in the district, is also excited to see their faces when their poem is displayed.

e Poetry Trail installment’s future beyond this year is yet unknown. For it to be sustainable, it will need additional funding and organizational support from interested community members. “Whether I continue with it or a group picks it up and runs with it, we’ll see. e seed is planted, and it needs some nurturing,” Friedman said. “ e dream, of course, is that those pre-K kids come back in 15–20 years and say, ‘ at’s how I got started as a writer.’”

To help me fly, And I would land on a flower Or eat sweet fruits

Like strawberries, cantaloupe, and watermelon. If I were a bu erfly, I would be a vegetarian Like my sister, who doesn’t even like meat.

If I were a bu erfly, I would land on a person wearing bright clothes And ckle their nose and lips. I wouldn’t make any noise. I would just fly by.

BUDGETING FOR LONG VACATIONS ABROAD

Look into lodging: There is a lot of wiggle room when it comes to lodging and price points. You can stay in five-star hotels and pay a premium or consider hostels if bells and whistles aren’t your priority.Keep in mind that a longer stay could come with a discount. Airbnb, for example, lets hosts list weekly or monthly prices, with monthly discounts running 40 to 60 percent less than daily rates.

Anticipation

Music has a big impact on my life. And all it takes sometimes is a simple thought or word or phrase, and I’ll start singing, mostly in my head, but also out loud, a song that matches the idea. Carly Simon’s “Anticipation” comes to mind for this time of year... the advent of Spring. Sing along!

Why is it that no live person answers your calls any more? How can every company be experiencing a higher volume of calls all at the same time? Alexander Graham Bell is rolling over in his grave right now.

STOP means STOP, not Yield

PSA: STOP signs mean you come to a complete stop before proceeding when it’s your turn to go. It seems most drivers consider STOP signs as YIELD signs instead. I’ve almost been hit by numerous drivers just gliding through. Sure, some slow down a bit, but it seems brakes are not even applied. Please stop at STOP signs.

Why does a local restaurant bother to stay open? The hours are never the same, they close in the middle of the day. We have driven 20 minutes to find it closed. The food is very good, prices are fair. BUT, they aren’t going to make it if this is a routine.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION

Cats can become pregnant even during the first estrus cycle. A feline’s pregnancy lasts around 63 to 65 days, or about nine weeks. A cat also can be impregnated again very quickly after giving birth, as nursing kittens will not prevent a subsequent pregnancy. The average litter size is three to six kittens, so it’s easy to see just how many kittens can be born of one cat if she’s left to her own reproductive devices. Females also can be mated by more than one male or even one of their male relatives.

Scrapes and Cuts

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an adventurous Shorthaired Pointer named “Gordie” who loves running through the woods behind my home while I walk behind him. He occasionally comes back with scrapes and cuts. I want to share with your readers how I take care of his minor injuries, and when a vet visit is necessary.

Most of the time, Gordie’s scrapes are very minor. I always check him when we get back to the house, because he can easily pick up ticks, too. I remove any clinging ticks and kill them right away. I check the pads under his paws, and run my hand along his coat to remove burrs. If he has a scrape on his side or paw, I clean it with warm water, disinfect it and put some antibiotic ointment on it. If it’s a place where he can scratch or lick, I cover it with a gauze bandage for a couple of days.

Last month, Gordie limped over to me with a deep laceration on his left front paw pad. Fortunately, we weren’t far from home. I carried him inside and gently looked at the injury. It wasn’t bleeding too badly, but the cut was very deep, and trying to clean it was very painful for him. This time, we had to see the vet. I wrapped his paw in gauze to protect it and off we went. The vet stitched him up, and Gordie has to wear a lampshade collar for the next week or so to let it heal.

I hope my story will be helpful to readers. -- Tyler N., Dracut, Massachusetts

DEAR TYLER: This is very helpful! Best wishes to Gordie for a speedy recovery. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

What does the word Easter mean? Another theory suggests that the word ‘Easter’ originated from the German word for ‘East,’ also meaning dawn.

The most common Easter tradition is dyeing Easter eggs, including a lot of fun activities such as egg rolling and egg hunts. Flying kites and games like leapfrog are also popular, as well as games associated with the Easter bunny.

Chocolate and other candy, especially bunny- or egg-shaped ones are widely consumed. Pastel colors like pink, baby blue, and lilac are associated with this day and are seen everywhere on clothing, dyed eggs, and at events.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadiantravelersabouttodepart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.
