In the late ‘90s, Janis Reed launched her interior design business and began working from home in the lakeside town of Charlotte. Around the same time, she and her husband, Doug, welcomed their youngest child, a daughter named Mackenzie. With a closeknit relationship already in place, Mackenzie grew up deeply rooted in the world of design. She accompanied her mother to furniture and accessory markets, visited local vendors, and often offered her opinion on design concepts for clients. But interior design was just a sliver of the creativity that Mackenzie was exposed to as a child, sparking her eventual path as an author.
Nearly three decades later, Janis has expanded her business to include a brick-and-mortar home & gift boutique at the Piano Works in East Rochester. While Mackenzie still enjoys helping her mom and can often be found at the boutique, she’s also ventured into writing novels. After graduating from Nazareth University with a degree in Communication and Media, Mackenzie published two young adult thrillers, The Rosewood Hunt and The Wilde Trials, with HarperCollins. Additionally, her debut adult book will be published next year by Berkley/Penguin Random House.
Proud of one another and always the first to cheer the other on, Janis and Mackenzie are happy to share their thoughts on cultivating a legacy of creativity – a legacy that started right at home.
How did you cultivate creativity in your home?
J: "I believe creativity comes from sources all around you and through you. In our home, it could have been small things like setting a fanciful table for a family gathering, or decorating every surface for Christmas! More importantly, I think it was being involved in our kids’ lives: taking an active role in their interests and projects, celebrating their wins, and helping them solve challenges."
What was it like growing up with a mom who ran her own creative business?
M: "Inspiring! Often, I would walk into her office and find the desk strewn with fabric and paint samples and catalogs for whatever the current project was. It was fun getting to weigh in on things and I always felt very special when she would let me tag along on business outings. I also had a front-row seat to how much work and self-discipline it takes to run your own business –a lot!"
What inspired you to open your boutique and how does it reflect your design philosophy?
J: "My home & gift boutique is an extension of my creative vision of helping people live life more enjoyably at home. I see furnishings and gifts as more than just products or trends; they become part of one’s personal expression. The best spaces and the best gifts tell a story – yours!"
How did your upbringing impact your own creativity?
M: "Both of my parents always encouraged my brothers and me to try new things all the time, which, looking back, was huge in helping us find our passions. I feel very fortunate that they always valued creative hobbies just as much as sports and sciences. I never felt the need to hide anything from them, and every new creative pursuit was met with enthusiasm and support."
What’s been the most rewarding part of having a creative career?
J: "Interior design provides a way for me to blend creativity with purpose. An intentionally designed home supports daily activities, improves comfort, and fosters a sense of wellbeing. Knowing I can make that difference for my clients is what makes my work so fulfilling."
M: "Meeting readers who have been positively impacted by my books is truly the best part. To know that the words I write, which are often a comfort to me, can also provide comfort and an escape for someone else is more than I could have ever hoped for."
How do you support each other in your endeavors?
J: "I’m extremely proud of Mackenzie for her accomplishments. Her passion for writing, coupled with the courage to pursue and tenacity to persist, is not only admirable, it’s unstoppable; and she does it all with humility and grace. It’s so exciting for me to witness her success, as it is for all three of our children. Doug and I continue to support her efforts, offering advice and encouragement when needed. We love attending her events and promoting her books everywhere we go. I think it’s fair to say we’re her biggest fans!"
M: "I love helping out with the boutique in any way that I can. Sometimes that looks like making social media posts, sometimes it’s sending newsletter emails, and sometimes it's brainstorming and attending upcoming events. I genuinely love being at the boutique and spending time with my mom, so doing whatever I can to make things even a little bit easier for her is top priority. It’s so inspiring to see how her life-long dream of opening a retail store has come true – I’m happy to be part of it every step of the way."
Janis' boutique exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which she intentionally creates for her customers. Hospitality is a huge part of the store’s culture, and visitors are often greeted with a treat while they shop. Every purchase leaves the store in a gift-ready bag with their signature blue tissue, making the experience feel extra special. The calming environment is achieved through elements like natural light, soothing music, and the scent of a candle burning in the background. Janis and her team display furnishings and gifts in lifestyle settings, encouraging customers to envision how these items could fit into their own spaces.
Being based in Rochester has also had a positive impact on Janis' boutique. She loves being part of the vibrant local community and proudly features products made by local artisans, from framed art to specialty foods and candles. There’s a strong sense of loyalty among local shoppers, and Janis is thankful for their support of small independent stores like hers.
"This boutique is a true gem! The inventory is always changing, offering a beautiful selection of everything from baby gifts to pantry staples, jewelry, and home décor. The pieces are not only sustainable and high quality, but perfect for every season or for everyday living. Janis and Doug create such a welcoming atmosphere, always offering a drink or a sweet treat while you shop." - Mary C.

Mackenzie's creative journey began with music, as she loved being part of musicals and writing her own songs. It wasn’t until high school that she started working on her first book, and she didn’t finish it until college. But once she discovered novel-writing, it felt like the perfect fit. Now, as a published author with HarperCollins and Berkley/Penguin Random House, she has found her true calling. Mackenzie draws inspiration from the stories she loves, whether through books or movies, and strives to offer her readers the same comfort and escape she’s found in storytelling.
Though her creative pursuits have evolved over the years, Mackenzie knows that writing will always be a significant part of her life. She’s just getting started, and she’s excited to see where her journey will take her.
You can purchase her books, The Rosewood Hunt and The Wilde Trials, at her mom's boutique, Janis Reed Interiors in East Rochester.

pg. 14 Meet @sistersbookguide, a group of sisters who love literature pg. 28 Cozy getaways with thrifted fun with Sarah Pavia
Welcome to the Sisters’ Book Guide, a book club/bookstagram born from a love of literature and sisterhood.
Meet Lindsay, Katie, Kyrsten, and Amanda, four sisters with decidedly diverse tastes in books. Their monthly girls’ nights always turned into manic meetups where they frantically discussed books they were reading, none of which overlapped another sister’s choices. They soon cemented their hangout times into official book club meetings, with choice monthly reads they all got excited about. They each credit the Sisters’ Book Guide for pushing them to read more, doomscroll less, expand literary horizons, and connect – not only with each other but with lots of other readers, too!
The top question (after "What are you reading?" of course) the sisters get asked is, “Are you really sisters?” They are – kind of! Lindsay and Katie are sisters, and Kyrsten is their sister-in-law. Amanda is Katie’s sister-in-law too.
There’s nothing quite like finding the right book to curl up with. Each sister is excited to share their top two picks for reading. So, grab a cozy blanket and beverage, and let’s have a read-in, shall we?
by @sistersbookguide and vivien reed
Kyrsten is a sci-fi enthusiast who also loves fantasy books with intricate world-building and magic. She’s here for strong, smart, female main characters, and of course, romance!
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig: If you’re looking for dark and moody vibes, this is the best duology to pick up! The world-building is excellent, and the system of magic is unique – characters only develop powers by using providence cards. However, an illness permeates the land, giving people power even without cards, and the king sets out to capture those individuals.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown: In a futuristic society, after we have left Earth and found a way to populate Mars, Darrow is a slave in an oppressive society. He must find a way out of his caste and fight to overrun the corrupt government to provide a better life for his family.
Katie enjoys reads that induce “book hangovers,” especially thrillers and romance novels that include complex characters she would want to be friends with in real life!
The Wedding People by Alison Espach: This is a sharp and darkly funny story of chance encounters and unexpected friendship. It follows a troubled forty-something woman who, in a desperate moment, unknowingly crashes an uppity bride’s exclusive wedding week. Despite their differences, the two women form an unlikely bond and change each other’s lives.
Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty: What would you do if you learned how and when you were going to die? The characters in this book gain those details unexpectedly while on an otherwise uneventful flight. Their lives are changed in immeasurable ways. "I loved all the characters’ unique stories and all the ways they interconnect. This book will make you consider your own life and making the most of every day."
Lindsay loves magical realism, quirky characters, and charming, layered narratives that explore complex issues with a metaphorical lens.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: Six mythical and dangerous children (including a sixyear-old antichrist) live in an orphanage on a magical island. Linus, a lonely guy who lives for his job with the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, is sent there on a highly classified assignment. Is it sticky-sweet and chock full of life lessons? Yes.
Shark Heart by Emily Habeck: Shortly after Lewis and Wren marry, Lewis receives the devastating diagnosis of a rare genetic mutation. While he will keep his consciousness and memories, his body transitions into one of the ocean’s most dangerous predators: the great white shark. There is no cure. This book is poetic, heartbreaking, and delightfully strange. "I love how Habeck explores the devastation of anticipatory grief and loss under the magical veil of surrealism."
Amanda prefers books that offer an escape with compelling storylines and rich character development across genres – fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction are all fair game!
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab: Growing up in the early 1700s, Addie LaRue feels trapped by expectations that young women must marry and start a family. In her desperation, she makes a deal to live forever and without societal constraints, but she soon finds out that there is a catch. This book follows her life through the centuries and locales she lives in to present day when she meets someone who changes her whole world.
Signal Fires by Dani Shapiro: This book intertwines the lives of two families and their struggles after a tragic accident. It explores how people’s lives weave together and how one action can change the trajectory of lives forever. It highlights relationships that are complicated and messy, yet beautiful. "I loved this story about family, grief, wanting to be seen, and moving forward through challenges."

Welcome to Elevate, a one-day conference where visionaries, investors, entrepreneurs, and dreamers unite to shape the future of female-led businesses in our area.
Led by the Stella Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2012 that’s supported femaleled companies and funds resulting in over $250M allocated towards women-owned start-ups and more. Stella Foundation supports through courses, community, capital opportunities, and conferences like Elevate!
In an era where digital connectivity often overshadows face-to-face interactions, events like the Elevate Women's Business Summit in Rochester, NY are proving that local community support remains the bedrock of entrepreneurial success.
Set to take place on April 3rd, 2025, at the city's reputable venue, Arbor Midtown, this gathering exemplifies how regional ecosystems can rally together to support women-owned businesses, creating a ripple effect of growth and innovation throughout the area
The summit's theme, playfully dubbed "Femininominom," speaks to a larger truth about business communities: when local resources, from investors to ecosystem builders, unite with a shared purpose, they create a phenomenon greater than the sum of its parts. This is particularly crucial in mid-sized cities like Rochester, where the density of connections can transform casual networking into meaningful partnerships, and where community support can mean the difference between a business's survival and its thriving success.
What makes initiatives like Elevate particularly impactful is their ability to bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement through tangible, local connections.
By bringing together founders, dreamers, doers, and investors in one space, the summit creates an environment where Rochester's business leaders can forge lasting relationships that extend far beyond a single day of programming. This hyperlocal approach to business development, combined with national-level expertise, demonstrates how cities can create their own unique formula for entrepreneurial success, powered by the strength of community ties and the accessibility of local resources.

HOME START HOPE SUPPORTS WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THEIR TRANSITION FROM HOMELESSNESS TO INDEPENDENT LIVING
There was a remarkable young woman we met in 2023. She worked really hard to get custody of her two nieces to get them away from a terrible situation with their mom - her sister. Along with that, she was going to school and working as a home health aide, adjusting to the girls' schedules. When we met her, she had just moved into an apartment on Lyell Ave. They hardly had anything - she didn't even have appliances! She came to HSH to shop for new items. She brought the girls, and they were so excited to pick out their own comforters! It was like Christmas for all of them. We were also able to get them a dining room table & chairs, a couch, coffee table, lamps, end tables, and a bed for one of the girls.

Sláinte: a word most Americans have probably never heard before, but have certainly experienced. Pronounced “slan-cha,” it translates to “health” in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and it’s commonly used as a drinking toast. But to Danny and Jessica Barry, it means much more than that. It’s a word that symbolizes community and camaraderie. It’s a greeting, thank you, and “see you later” all in one.
A real-life translation of the word looks something like this: Music breaks out as laughter and cheers of “sláinte” ring through the air. The room is filled with friendly smiles that make even a stranger feel like you’ve known them forever. It’s an average night at Barry’s Old School Irish in Webster— before it closed its doors in 2023—and exactly what the Barrys pictured when they founded the pub twelve years earlier.
It all started in 2011 with their honeymoon to the quaint Irish countryside. Among rolling hills and the warm hospitality of traditional Irish pubs, the couple realized they wanted to take a little piece of that magic back home to Rochester. And so they did, founding Barry’s Old School Irish that same year.
Over the years, the pub became a Rochester staple. Jessica attributes its success to “all the wonderful people that came in the pub and filled the walls with so much love and laughter, creating memories that will last a lifetime.” And even though Barry’s may no longer be open, the echoes of those cherished memories live on in the hearts of its patrons.
A particularly fond pub memory happened one St. Patrick’s Day when a friend of the Barrys brought his horse to the celebration. “Turns out his horse was a big fan of Guinness and had a pint with everyone there,” she recalls, still smiling at the thought.
After over a decade of building community and camaraderie at Barry’s Old School Irish, Danny and Jessica decided to close the pub in 2023 and pursue their dream of creating a liquor company. Though the pub’s doors may have closed, the spirit of sláinte lives on in a new form – the bottle form, to be exact.
“During the pandemic, you were able to sell alcohol out the door, so we would make fresh Irish cream on the spot as a mixed drink every day for people to take home,” Jessica explains. “This allowed people to take home a piece of the pub on any night to enjoy, even though they couldn’t physically be at the pub at that time.”
It was this that originally sparked the idea for Barry’s Irish Cream Liqueur — the first drink in Danny and Jessica’s new endeavor, and one that truly captures the spirit of Barry’s Old School Irish in a bottle. Now, the Tipperary, Ireland-made drink is available all over New York State in restaurants, bars, liquor stores, and of course, pubs.
Looking for ways to up your St. Patrick’s Day game? There are few better folks to show you how than Danny and Jessica Barry and their three kiddos. For this family, St. Patrick’s Day goes beyond wearing green and hunting for four-leaf clovers – it’s a full-day, full-family affair of parade marching, recipe crafting, and embracing their Irish roots – and enjoying a drink or two (though this tradition’s just for the grownups).
“When it comes to the big day itself, we recommend making a whole day of it,” Jessica says. She suggests kicking off your St. Patty’s Day with a cup of Irish tea and Irish cream bundt cake. Lunch calls for a bowl of potato and herb soup, with homemade Irish brown bread and Kerry Gold butter on the side.
For dinner? “Obviously corned beef and cabbage! The best tip we can give when preparing your corned beef is to let it slow cook in Irish beers like Smithwicks and Guinness all day. Potatoes and carrots accompany the dish as well. For dessert, throw some Barry’s Irish Cream in your coffee with homemade whipped cream on top, sprinkled with a bit of nutmeg.”
Another cherished Barry tradition is participating in the annual Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Every year, the whole family proudly marches through downtown, clad in green from head to toe. Danny and Jessica have been attending since they
were kids themselves, which makes being recognized as the 2024 Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade Business Leaders of the Year all the more meaningful to them.
“We got to lead the parade, with our kids right there marching by our side. Smiles on our faces, proudly wearing our business leaders of the year sashes, and shillelagh in hand. What a day –one that we’ll hold in our hearts forever!”
For the Barry family, celebrating all things Irish doesn’t stop at St. Patrick’s Day. Fall brings crisp air and crunchy leaves, but it also brings the annual Barry’s Irish Festival. Born from a goal of bringing the community together to celebrate Irish culture, the event is a full-day, family-oriented affair featuring local bagpipers, Irish organizations, Irish dance schools, and musicians like the Gates Keystone Club Police Pipes & Drums – who the Barrys are huge fans of.
“They are some of the kindest people in the world,” Jessica says. “Unbelievably talented too…anytime there is a big Barry’s event, they are there for us.”
For Danny and Jessica, the festival is a cherished opportunity to watch “strangers become friends and friends become family. It’s incredible to see the very best of the human spirit all tied together with a shamrock bow.”
It’s a day that truly captures the spirit of the word that’s been there throughout their journey, from a honeymoon in the Irish countryside to launching a liquor company and beyond: sláinte.
INGREDIENTS:
Cooking spray with flour
1 cup crushed pecans
1 package yellow cake mix
1 package instant
vanilla pudding
4 large eggs
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup Barry’s Irish Cream
Glaze:
1 stick of butter
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup Barry’s Irish Cream
1/4 cup water
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 325° F. Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan. Sprinkle chopped nuts evenly over the bottom of the pan.
Combine cake mix and pudding mix in a large bowl. Beat in eggs, Irish cream, oil, and water with an electric mixer on high speed for five minutes. Pour batter over nuts in the prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, about one hour. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
While cake cools, make glaze: Combine sugar, butter, and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in Barry’s Irish cream.
Invert cake onto a serving dish. Prick the top and sides of cake with a toothpick. Spoon glaze over the top and brush onto the sides. Allow cake to absorb glaze, then repeat until glaze is used up.
Michelle Nichols Martocello Director of Personal Development and Education for The NXT Level Collective
Michelle Nichols Martocello is an entrepreneur, acclaimed interior designer, & passionate hospitality expert. As the top national designer at Bassett Furniture and the Director of Personal Development and Education for the Next Level Collective, she brings creativity and expertise to every endeavor. A seasoned traveler, Michelle combines her passion for adventure with a dedication to crafting exceptional guest experiences through her short-term rental business, WBC Vacations.
Michelle, how have your travels influenced your vision for WBC Vacations?
My travels to 37 countries & 28 states taught me that great hospitality is about thoughtful details, not just luxury. I’ve stayed in everything from 5-star hotels to hostels & cozy guesthouses, and I brought those lessons from those stays to WBC Vacations. Every element, from soft linens to intuitive layouts, was chosen to create a beautiful, functional haven where guests feel welcomed & inspired while sticking with a cottage budget.
What challenges did you face while starting WBC Vacations, and how did you overcome them?
One major challenge was when a tree fell on the house, delaying our opening. It was a tough setback, but I used the extra time to fine-tune the property. My background as an interior designer helped reframe the delay into an opportunity to make the space even better.
How did your design expertise shape your Airbnb?
Many properties settle for “good enough,” but I wanted WBC to stand out. As a designer, I focused on blending style with practicality. Every piece, from curated furniture to lakeside aesthetics, was chosen to create a memorable experience. Professional photography helped showcase the space online, setting us apart in a competitive market.
How do you balance WBC Vacations with your other ventures and family life?
It’s a juggling act, but I thrive on organizing what I am passionate about. My husband’s support is invaluable, and I find joy in seeing my ventures come to life. Balancing everything is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Follow Michelle on Instagram @nichols_interiors // @wbc_vacations

Sometimes, we all need a little getaway to break up the routine. Why not make it even more special by renting a house or room at a boutique hotel or bed & breakfast, and adding a few thrifted touches? Whether you’re with friends or family, combining a unique space with thrift-inspired activities creates the perfect recipe for a memorable and budget-friendly retreat!
BY SARAH PAVIA
Thrift stores are a goldmine for fun and quirky decorations, from vintage party hats to themed decorations. Pick a theme for your getaway, and have each guest thrift a décor item or an outfit to match it. For example, try a ’70s or retro theme where everyone pulls together something stylish and nostalgic. It’s a fun way to give your gathering a unique vibe!
If your getaway spot has a kitchen, you're in luck! Thrift stores are filled with vintage cookbooks and recent releases. Grab a few, and then head to a local market to gather ingredients for a homecooked meal. You could even choose a dish that represents the area you're staying in! For larger groups, let everyone bring a cookbook and make different recipes together. Maybe end the night with a mini cooking competition – who’s ready for the ultimate taste test?
Looking for a way to keep everyone entertained? Thrift stores have tons of board games, card games, and puzzles! Ask your guests to bring along their favorite game or one they haven’t played in ages. It’s an easy way to create laughs and new memories. To make it extra fun, you could swap games at the end so everyone has something fresh to bring home.
A swap is a great way to mix things up and keep things sustainable. Whether it's books or clothing, everyone brings gently used items to trade. For books, wrap them up and write your favorite quote or a short description on the front. If you don’t have something to bring, no worries – thrift stores are the perfect place to pick up something new to swap!
From yarn to paints, thrift stores have tons of crafting supplies. Grab a few materials in advance (or ask your guests to bring something from home), and get creative together! You could all create simple home décor pieces, like photo frames, or maybe cards for upcoming birthdays. It’s a fun way to spend the evening and make something personal to remember the trip by.
An overnight stay with friends doesn’t have to be extravagant to be memorable! With a little creativity, you can make it special without breaking the bank. Plus, a thrift store trip beforehand lets everyone bond and find hidden gems for your getaway.
Looking for the perfect place for your next getaway?

Mindful journaling has a way of turning everyday thoughts into moments of clarity. For Alexis Russell, it’s been a path to creativity, healing, and personal growth. Originally from Washington, DC, she now calls Rochester home with her husband and two daughters. As the founder of Inspiring Experiences, LLC, and co-founder of EXP Studio, LLC, Alexis is passionate about creating spaces that inspire innovation and community. Her own journey through postpartum depression led her to discover the transformative power of journaling. Now, she’s sharing how this simple practice can help others find peace, insight, and personal growth.
For Alexis, journaling has been a constant since childhood, inspired by her grandmother’s advice to write everything down. Over the years, her practice evolved from spontaneous notes and reflections to a lifeline during challenging times, especially after the birth of her first daughter.
Alexis struggled with postpartum depression, and she felt disconnected, numb, and overwhelmed by grief for her former identity and the unexpected challenges of motherhood. “I struggled to connect with my daughter,” she recalls. “My body was there, but my mind felt lightyears away.”
Through journaling, Alexis began asking herself questions, reflecting on her emotions, and gradually reconnecting with herself and her daughter. This journey inspired her StoryCards™, a tool rooted in the questions and insights that emerged during this pivotal period.
Journaling, Alexis believes, is more than a practice; it’s a sanctuary and a tool, “a space for release—a way to step back and process your experiences, thoughts, and emotions without the weight of judgment or expectation.” She emphasizes that there is no “right” way to journal. Instead, it’s about showing up authentically and using it as a mirror and a map for personal growth.
Driven by a desire to help others, Alexis shares her experiences to remind struggling moms they’re not alone. By offering tools and techniques that helped her find clarity and peace, she hopes to inspire others to do the same. “Helping others with love and compassion is at the heart of everything I do,” she says.
Her message is simple yet powerful:
“Together, we can find a way forward.”
Mindful journaling extends beyond the page, fostering connections to other mindful habits, such as eating. Alexis noted, “Journaling has helped me reflect on my emotions and habits, which directly impact how I approach food.” Identifying emotional eating triggers and differentiating between physical and emotional hunger has transformed her relationship with food.
Mindful eating, much like journaling, emphasizes awareness and presence. Alexis shares, “It’s not just about what you eat but how you eat.” She encourages using journaling prompts to explore your relationship with food, reflecting on emotions and sensations before, during, and after meals. Together, these practices promote self-compassion and deeper connections with one’s body and habits.
Message to the Community
Alexis’ advice to anyone curious about mindful journaling is simple: “Give it a try. If you’re searching for something to help you through tough times or a way to cherish life’s beautiful moments more meaningfully, mindful journaling might be exactly what you need.” The practice, she believes, is a space for reflection, growth, and self-discovery—a journey that unfolds uniquely for each person. Slowing down, being present, and cultivating awareness can transform not only how we interact with the world but also how we connect with ourselves.
1. Start Simple
Let go of perfection. “If it feels overwhelming, journal prompts can be a great way to begin. The key is simply deciding to start—and then actually giving it a go.”
2. Experiment with Techniques
From more structured approaches like Morning Pages to free-flowing reflections on specific prompts, find what resonates with you. Alexis says she worked through a variety of techniques before she found what journaling habits worked best for her at this time in her life.
3. Create a Ritual
Whether it’s first thing in the morning, last thing before bed, or during quiet moments when a baby sleeps, for instance, consistency helps make journaling a meaningful habit.
4. Use Guided Prompts

5. Be Patient with Yourself
Journaling doesn’t have to happen daily to be effective. While a routine can help, it’s all about finding what works best for you. Mindful journaling is your practice, your space to reflect, grow, and embrace the journey in your own time and your own way.

Prompt: What must I release from the past season to make space for new growth? How can I gently let go of what no longer serves me?
Guidance: List what feels heavy or outdated in your life—habits, beliefs, or relationships. Imagine setting these things down gently, like taking off a winter coat. Then explore what new possibilities might fill that space.
Prompt: What seeds of intention do I want to plant for the year ahead? How can I nurture them daily to bring them to life?
Guidance: Think of one or two areas where you’d like to grow—personal, professional, emotional, or spiritual. Write about small, consistent actions you can take each day, like watering and tending to seeds, to nurture these intentions.

Prompt: As I observe the natural world awakening, how can I align my personal growth with the rhythms of the season?
Guidance: Spend a moment visualizing spring—the budding flowers, longer days, fresh breezes. Reflect on what these symbolize for you. Write about how you can mirror this energy in your own life—renewal, growth, or new beginnings.
Prompt: What small steps or actions can I take now that will lead to meaningful progress by the time spring is in full bloom?
Guidance: Break down a larger goal or aspiration into the smallest actionable step you can take today. Write about how even the tiniest progress can add up over time and how it feels to take that first step.

She went above and beyond, joining vendor meetings, being super organized, and offering endless décor options. Her personality made planning feel like working with a friend.
On the big day, when she revealed the reception tent to us, my jaw was literally on the floor. We can’t thank Miranda enough for

You may have heard of the incredible Letchworth State Park. Next to the Glen Iris Inn is a fountain that has been spraying water daily since 1860. In winter, this fountain transforms into an ice volcano after a series of super cold days—it’s a stunning sight! The size of the ice volcano varies each year, so you’ll never see the same one twice.
While you’re there, bring your sled or snowshoes to take advantage of the park’s winter beauty. But as winter transitions into spring, the landscape comes alive with vibrant green hues and budding wildflowers—it’s a beautiful shift to witness! Be sure to explore the charming town of Perry, just a short drive from Letchworth. There, you’ll find delightful shops like Eleven Covington, the newcomer Old Souls Bakery, and the fabulous Ration Wine Bar. You’ll also find East Hill Creamery just a bit
Western New York is a region that truly captures the essence of seasonal charm. Whether you're looking to embrace the beauty of nature, indulge in delicious local flavors, or unwind in peaceful surroundings, there’s no shortage of activities and destinations to enjoy. From the dramatic landscapes of Letchworth State Park to the quaint villages of Aurora and Naples, each area offers its own unique experience, no matter the season. Here’s a guide to some of the best places to visit in WNY that showcase the region's undeniable charm year-round.
If you’re looking for the perfect place to relax and recharge during your visit, I highly recommend staying at one of the Dell Collective properties. Amanda is the most thoughtful host, and her properties are incredibly special. I recently stayed at the 19A Cabin in Portageville, a
Amanda’s mission is to make your stay as cozy and chic as possible, and she always succeeds. The cabin is just minutes from the park, and if you find yourself craving a meal, Valley Bread and Bounty in nearby Fillmore is a mustvisit! Their coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and cinnamon rolls are a treat.
Another fantastic year-round destination is the RMSC Cumming Nature Center in Naples. This hidden gem is known for its majestic pines, which are truly a sight to behold in person. Whether you visit in winter to cross-country ski, snowshoe, or walk the Gnome Roam trail, or return in the warmer months to explore the other available trails, there’s always something to see. From December through March, the Gnome Roam is a magical winter experience, but as the days lengthen and the snow melts, the trails open up to reveal the vibrant forest preparing for spring. For just $5 per person, you can immerse yourself in nature.
Be sure to stop at Ontario Park at Gannett Hill, which offers free entry and stunning views, especially from the Jump Off Overlook. In winter, Bristol Mountain is the place to ski, and when the fall foliage arrives, the chairlift rides offer breathtaking views.
After your outdoor adventure, Hollerhorn Distilling is perfect for cocktails and a meal, or you can head to Old School Café, Plenty the Bakery (my personal favorite), and Roots Café, home to Inspire Moore Winery.
While you’re in town, don’t miss a visit to Naples Maple Farm for a tour or a maple syrup tasting—it’s the best! If you’re looking for something fun to do in the month of March, The Farm is hosting a Tours & Tastings Pancake Breakfast on the weekends of March 22nd & 23rd and March 29th & 30th. It’s sure to be a fun weekend! Get your tickets on their website. For a cozy stay, consider their unique Airbnb located inside the working maple farm, where Michal-Kathryn has created a welcoming space with thoughtful touches, including maple syrup with breakfast.
Aurora, a charming village on the east side of Cayuga Lake, offers stunning views, quaint shops, and inviting eateries, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing getaway. As spring arrives, the town bursts with life, and the lake becomes a scenic backdrop for outdoor exploration.
Take a leisurely stroll along the Great Gulley Falls Trail, or relax at the cozy Aurora Brewing Company, which serves hearty meals and local brews. Visit the whimsical Mackenzie-Childs Headquarters, where you can tour the farmhouse and explore the beautiful grounds adorned with unique art.
Unwind at the Inns of Aurora, where charming accommodations, lush gardens, and breathtaking lake views await. Enjoy the nightly wine hour by the fire, dine al fresco in the blooming gardens, or indulge in a spa treatment. Aurora offers a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and adventure year-round.
One of my favorite activities is driving to Keuka Lake to explore the wineries and distilleries along the trail, followed by dinner at Hammondsport’s Park Inn. The Finger Lakes towns are bustling with visitors during the summer, but spring offers a peaceful and beautiful experience as the vineyards come alive with new growth. Domaine Leseurre has a fabulous macaron wine pairing, Krookid Leyk Distilling features a rotating menu of boozy coffee flights on Sundays, and Living Roots boasts a stunning tasting room with unmatched views of Keuka Lake.

When you think of the changing seasons, what comes to mind? As a writer, visual words come to mind: melting snow, emerging color. As a poet, one figurative word stands out: renewal. As a drone photographer, the shift from winter to spring offers something entirely different. Alex Ramos is a licensed drone pilot, photographer, and videographer whose aerial shots capture the subtle transition — from icy wind chill to warm sunlight, ice breaking up on the lakes, and snowflakes melting on abandoned structures. He photographs the Flower City using his DJI Mini 3 Pro drone. While others tend to rush through the last cold days, Alex slows it down with panoramic captures that highlight the city’s revival. I had the privilege of chatting with Alex about his photography and the story he’s passionate to tell.
When the season changes from winter to spring, what do you love about the change and what places do you love to capture?
I love it when the snow melts and the color that we know and love around Rochester begins to show again! My absolute favorite thing is the return of the vibrant sunrises and sunsets again, they make for great photographic captures! [When this happens] I love going to Mendon Ponds. Seeing this area transition from winter to spring is always a treat. Letchworth is a good one too. I always enjoy seeing the valley in the park. As the snow melts, the waterfalls rage and there’s tons of water flowing.
What
Drone photography and videography is fun; I’m so passionate about it! What makes it so unique is reaching new heights with it. Sure a camera may take higher resolution photos, but they can’t take photos 400 feet in the air! With my license and FAA approval, I get to capture something truly incredible, a bird’s eye view otherwise difficult or impossible to capture with traditional cameras. Drones capture stunning aerial shots, dynamic camera movements, and unique angles that enhance the visual appeal of both videos and photos.

I see your photos of abandoned buildings and structures, which are so eye-catching! What draws you to capture these scenes? What do you see in our city’s history and what do you envision for Rochester’s future when you highlight these areas?
What draws me to photograph abandoned buildings and properties around the city is the history each place holds. Every building has its own unique story, whether good or a bad. It excites me to get creative and tell its story to my followers. Rochester has a rich history. Between the various abandoned asylums, or a department store that has been closed for decades, Rochester has a story to tell, and I try to tell it. What I see in our future when I highlight these areas is a chance for renewal. It’s a chance for our local leaders to maybe take action to redevelop these abandoned properties into something useful for our communities.
What location have you come to love that you want others to know about?
I have two! The first is High Falls, with its breathtaking view of the waterfall, and the Rochester skyline behind it. The other is a parking garage in downtown Rochester named the Court Street Garage. It’s my absolute favorite place to bring my drone day or night. I park on the roof and admire our skyscrapers lit up in various colors. I send my drone up and capture our city lit up at night. I think people should take the time to bring a chair, sit on the rooftop, and take it all in. It’s very calming.
When it comes to telling a story through photography, what story are you most passionate about telling?
The story I’m most passionate about is one I can create. Whether it’s a drone photo/video of the ROC Holiday Village in winter or Innovative Field in the spring, I want to capture the joy of a city coming together in celebration.
If it’s photos of our natural parks, I aim to highlight the beauty around us and encourage people to appreciate it. If it’s about abandoned properties, I want to uncover the forgotten stories—those people might not know or may have long since overlooked.
Through Alex’s photography, we get an exhilarating perspective of our city as he reveals its magnetism through his aerial view. Alex inspires us to respect and appreciate the quiet beauty of winter’s end and teaches us to embrace the vibrant transformation as the city awakens to spring -- just by looking up.
No one heard the first break.
Early crumbs, then glacial glass.
This rush announces winter –a commanding presence of fluent fury. Winter warmth cracks ice, frozen crystals hush, delicate growth hides, to preserve what’s on the other side. The steady hold of winter.
