Are You Worried About The Security Of Your Home Or Business?

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE from Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

I want to thank my neighbor across the street on Broxbourne Drive in Fairport for helping to plow my driveway after the snowstorm on February 16 when he saw that my snowplow was too small to tackle the amount of snow that had piled up on my driveway. He wouldn’t even accept the money I offered him for his troubles. I want to thank the Webster Goodyear on Empire Blvd. for filling my tires with air when they were low on February 13 during the coldsnow spell we had that weekend. The man not only filled my tires, he didn’t charge me for it. I was on my way out to Hilton to see my girlfriend and I made it with plenty of time to enjoy together! I wish to send a big shout out THANK YOU to the snow plow driver who pushed the snow out of my

driveway Tuesday 2/16/16. I was out shoveling the remaining piles from an earlier plow, when you stopped and pushed it out of the way! What a blessing it was to me! You are an angel! Thank you from the house near the LeRoy American Legion! I’d like to thank all those good citizens who helped me round up my two horses when they decided to make their great winter escape on Wednesday morning 2/17/16. They trotted down snow covered roads, Jackson & South, Holley. Cindi Davis saw me trying to catch the rouge ponies and gave me a ride to keep up with the horses. Once I caught the horses I had to walk them home. Cindi stayed behind me with her car flashers on to warn traffic. Two other good citizens helped, John Carp & a red SUV; I was unable to get her name. A big THANKS to all!!

I will make this short because it is sad. My wish is that whomever owns our town cemetery will put a covering over the fence spikes so the baby deer don’t get caught and die. That’s what happened recently. Please do this good deed because it will come back to you. The wildlife deserve to be protected. To the vent about Volunteer members picking up meals and shopping with ambulance. Join us there is a U in VolUnteer and we need U. We are ON DUTY waiting for a call many hours a day as VOLUNTEERS. We have radios ON and drop everything immediately to respond to the incident. Many times we are also training NEW members in the roads, properties, churches, schools, childcare

centers, stores, markets, playing fields, doctors offices, business offices, dangerous structures, emergency access points for trails, airports, fire houses. All places we receive calls from multiple times a year. As a volunteer member over 40 years, I find that every time we are in the community we see and do something different. Join us, we need more U’s or soon we all will be paying more taxes.lf is it worth it?! I think not! Is this true? When a person is not employed--at all on any books anywhere-and has a few side jobs and earns cash--does that person file taxes AND GET A REFUND? What a scam, if true, when our military people don’t always receive a paycheck on time... Family members of the local mobile home park get special treatment from the employees who work for the park. And the employees happen to be relatives. They get their driveways plowed for free. Work done on their home for free. They can use empty lot parking for free – where we get charged $25. The rest of the residents have to pay for everything! And get rent hikes!! In this mobile home park – there is no justice!

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with

age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

St. Agnes School, in Avon, participated in the 2016 ZanerBloser 25th Annual National Handwriting Contest. The school encourages excellence in all educational endeavors. Good penmanship is part of the course of study at the school. Children begin to practice cursive handwriting at the end of the Second Grade and further mastery is taught in the Third Grade. Beginning at the Fourth Grade, students are expected to complete all written work in cursive. The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest gives students a chance to reflect upon their penmanship, and its importance to their educational experiences. The contest, open to all students in Grades K-8 in the United States, attracts over 3,000,000 participants. Students in Grades K-2 submit manuscript (print) entries; students in Grades 38 submit cursive handwriting entries. The contest entries, both manuscript and cursive are judged according to the Zaner-Bloser Keys to Legibility: Shape, Size, Spacing, and Slant. Winners of the contest are selected from both public and private school categories. State Grade-Level Winners compete against each other to become one of the 18 National Grade-Level Semifinalists. The 18 National Grade Level Semifinalists compete to be chosen as one of nine Grand National Grade Level Champions. In addition to these awards, Zaner-Bloser created the Nicholas Maxim Award to honor

Flossing helps to remove food debris from in between the teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach.

Eat healthy and nutritious foods and limit drinking soda and other beverages that contain sugar.

Brush at least twice a day to remove plaque. Plaque buildup can lead to cavities.

NO CAVITY CONTEST!!* Have your child come in for a dental cleaning during the month of February. All children that are CAVITY FREE will be entered into a drawing for movie passes (2 adult, 2 children), popcorn and drinks. $55 value.

And w hen spending extended time in the sun, it’s important to pack sunglasses and a brimmed hat to avoid squinting into the light.” Unfortunately, migraines may cause people to miss out on important events w ith friends and family.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 9, 1981, a nuclear accident at a Japanese power plant dumps 16 tons of radioactive waste into Wakasa Bay. Despite the risk to people eating contaminated fish, the public was not told of the spill for more than a month. Fish in the area displayed mutations for several years afterward.

APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Stinging insec ts suc h as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of fac tors, inc luding the lac k of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pestic ide usage, have threatened pollinator health in rec ent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protec ting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sourc es of nec tar and pollen. The N ational Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile c reating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely benefic ial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insec ts c an pose signific ant health and safety risks. In fac t, stinging insec ts send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings c ould trigger a potentially life-threatening reac tion. There is also a c ommon myth that bees and w asps c an only sting onc e before they die. This only holds true for some spec ies of stinging insec ts, and people should alw ays be c autious around hives and nests. If a person c omes in c lose c ontac t w ith a stinging insec t, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to bec ome more aggressive. The best c ourse of ac tion is to remain c alm and slow ly w alk in one direc tion until the insec t loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elc ome oasis for w ild bees or c ommunity bees that are being raised by loc al professionals is a great w ay to protec t pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insec ts to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be c ontac ted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe loc ation w here the bees c an be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public . If the hive is loc ated in a building, utilizing a professional is also c ritic ally important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover c ombs c ould c ontain honey that c an ferment and c ause serious damage, as w ell as attrac t pests to the property.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

How Safe Is Ultrasound? DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M. ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound.

Construction is complete and we are moving into our new space!

G rand O pening C om ing S oon DON’T FORGET! Dr. Washburn’s patients will be seen by Dr. Doaga at this new location.

NEW PATIENTS ALWAYS WELCOME

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S. ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broadspectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. It’s worth discussing further with your urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. How t o prot ect your car’s resale value Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

“The future is the past returning through another gate....” ~ Arnold H. Glasgow Students of history tell us that we can foretell the future by reviewing the past. In fact, it has been suggested that we can control our own future by applying the lessons the past has taught us. It is to be hoped that mankind is making progress through the centuries and not merely repeating the same mistakes. However, to progress, we must make changes and improvement in the way we do things. Since history does seem to repeat, it gives us a valuable guide to help us determine what changes are needed and how to make them. We are proud of our excellent record for dedicated service to the families of this community. We suggest that you come in and get acquainted. Let us answer your questions without obligation.

Sympathy Sayings You can address your card with “Dear” and sign off “With deepest sympathy” •Sending you positive thoughts through this difficult time. I want you to know how special your family is to us and we are here for you. •At time like these it is best to lean on your faith and your friends. Whichever one is closer. Your __________ will be forever missed. •Words can not express the heartache we feel for you and your family. We hope you allow the love around you to help ease your pain. •The memories will last forever, but ___________ (deceased) spirit will sorely be missed. We are here for you whenever you want to reminisce about all the good times we shared together. •Your amazing spirit continues to shine through this time of loss. Stay strong, love does conquer all. •You are in our prayers. May your spirit focus on all the love around you during such a difficult time. •Take it easy on yourself right now. Time is the only thing that will help your heart sing again.

IMAGINE YOURSELF It is quite common for those attending a funeral to imagine themselves in the place of the mourning family or even the deceased. They may ask themselves how they will respond to the stark reality of death and whether they prepared sufficiently. In this moment of contemplation, it is important to take stock of your own funeral plans. If you have deferred these important decisions, imagine your family being left with the responsibility of carrying the added burden of planning your funeral without your guidance at a time when they are most emotionally vulnerable. If you’ve already made your final arrangements, you can feel comforted by the fact that your family has been spared the difficulty of deciding for you. Preplanning has become more the norm since it alleviates loved ones from having to make those difficult decisions while grieving. Whether you desire a traditional service or prefer a more personalized event, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests. Reach us today at (585) 346-5401, and tour facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.
