e Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 was named the Avon Post for Joseph Gallipeau, an Avon resident killed in action in France in 1918. His biography will be presented at the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26th.
Joseph Leo Gallipeau 1898-1918
David and Viola Carrie Gallipeau of Lakeville welcomed their third child and first son, Joseph Leo Gallipeau, on October 12, 1898. ey moved to Avon when Joseph was about 10 years old and Joseph lived on Wadsworth Avenue for many years with his little brother, Spencer, his two older sisters, Ruth and Eunice, and his younger sister, Sophronia. David was a barber in town and Viola was a homemaker. Joseph worked as a messenger boy for the Railroad as a teenager. e family lost Spencer to a car accident in 1915 when he was 10.
On July 15, 1917 at 18 years old, Joseph enlisted in the Regular Army Division at the beginning of the World War and was trained at Camp Syracuse. He was one of the first Avon boys to enlist. On September 7, 1917, he went overseas on the USS Huron as a Private First Class. In October, while stationed in France, he turned 19. He was assigned to Company D, 23rd Infantry 2nd Division.
During his service, Joseph was in the trenches for many months before he was killed in action on June 6, 1918 at Belleau Wood on the deadliest day of e Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1 - June 26, 1918). Joseph and so many others that day gave their lives in a wheat field on their way to Belleau Wood. His mother received a telegram informing her of his death on July 24, 1918.
In 1919, e American Legion first applied for an Avon charter and chose the name Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294. American Legion Posts are named for a veteran(s) from the community who gave their life in service to their country. Post 294 received their permanent charter in February 1925.
Joseph was first buried in France, but his body was brought back to America aboard the U.S.A.T. Cantigny in late September 1921. e body was then brought to the home of his parents on Wadsworth Avenue. A full military funeral was held on a Saturday morning at St. Agnes Church in the charge of the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post, including a mounted guard of honor, a firing squad from Troop M and the 54th Regiment Band of Rochester. e Legion, members of the Women’s Relief Corps, the G.A.R., Spanish War Veterans, and men who were on the border were in line. Schoolchildren also marched. Joseph’s body was reburied in Avon’s St. Agnes Cemetery near his little brother, Spencer.
On August 26, 1928, the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 applied for a headstone from the War Department for Joseph L. Gallipeau. It was delivered to the St. Agnes Cemetery in January 1929 and placed next to the family headstone.

It’s humbling to know that people from every corner of our region from our local towns have stepped up to serve. Some never returned, but their stories live on in family albums, local monuments, and the collective memory of a community that still honors them.

Rapone
In the early 1900s, auto culture started to take root in towns like Geneseo, Avon, and Dansville. Farmers who once relied on horses began adopting motor vehicles to haul goods. In fact, Geneseo had one of the region’s earliest “motor garages” by 1911, where drivers could store and service their new “horseless carriages.” Road development followed, and Livingston County’s role as a crossroads between Rochester and the Southern Tier helped shape its future. Next time you’re cruising Route 63 or 36, remember you’re driving a little piece of local history.

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

Makes about 2 dozen
6 medium-size red potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup finely chopped yellow onions
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup seeded and chopped red bell peppers
1/2 cup seeded and chopped green bell peppers
1/2 cup seeded and chopped yellow bell peppers
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon Tabasco brand pepper sauce
2 pounds medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarsely ground in a food processor
2 large eggs, well beaten
1/4 cup chopped freshly parsley leaves
1/2 cup peanut oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1. In a large saucepan, boil the potatoes in lightly salted water to cover until fork tender. Remove from the heat and drain. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Let cool.
2. Melt the butter over medium heat in a medium-size skillet. Add the onions, celery, bell peppers, salt, cayenne, black pepper, and Tabasco, and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring until they turn pink, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for about 5 minutes.
3. Combine the shrimp mixture with the potato mixture. Add the eggs and parsley and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes.
4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home.
A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available.
When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States.
The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home.
As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interestinexperiencingethnicdiningislikelytoremainconsistent.

Pigs are valued not just for their meat, but for their brains. Studies have shown pigs can use mirrors, solve puzzles, and even learn basic commands on par with dogs. If you’ve ever raised one, you know they’re curious, vocal, and full of personality. And yes, they love a good belly rub.
While not every town has an official dog park, places like Al Lorenz Park in Mt. Morris and Vitale Park in Lakeville are go-to spots for dog owners looking to stretch four legs. Be respectful of leash rules, and you’re likely to meet a few familiar furry faces!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: At my cat’s last veterinary visit, it was recommended that she wear a flea collar or get a monthly flea treatment. “Belle” is a completely indoor cat and has never had fleas. Why do I need to prevent her from getting them? -- Carla G., Gulf Shores, Alabama
DEAR CARLA: While it seems totally reasonable to not treat Belle for fleas, there is always a risk of getting them. This is the same logic behind routine vaccinations -- it’s unlikely that an indoor cat will be exposed to rabies, but there is always a chance.
I’ll give you a personal example. Last fall, I took care of a friend’s dog for a few weeks while they were away dealing with a family emergency. On the first day, I noticed that “Kerry” was chewing on his tail and his hair was almost gone at the base of his tail. I knew right away that he had fleas, and a visual check confirmed it. All of my pets are treated for fleas, even though my cat stays indoors. With my friend’s permission, I treated Kerry with a topical flea treatment and kept him separated from the other pets for a few days until no live fleas could be found in his fur. I also monitored all my pets for fleas during his visit.
I hadn’t planned on Kerry arriving with fleas, but his owner had forgotten to give him his monthly flea treatment for a couple of months. This unplanned situation could have been a real problem for me and my pets.
There’s an old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that is certainly the case with fleas, which can be hard to eliminate from your home once they get a foothold. There are many options today -- not just collars -- to prevent fleas from getting on your cat. Talk to your vet about the treatment they recommend for Belle.

People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.
DIY INJURIES
When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far.
When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

The Environmental Protection Agency says many bugs that resemble bed bugs. Identifying bed bugs correctly is a critical first step to treating an infestation. Here are some of the more notable attributes of bed bugs:
· Bed bugs are generally long and brown with a flat oval-shaped body around the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs that have recently fed will be balloon-like and reddish-brown in color.
· Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller, and their color is a translucent white-yellow.
· Bed bug eggs are pearl-white in color and the size of a pinhead.
· Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae and they cannot fly. They cannot jump long distances, instead moving by crawling and climbing. They can climb heights and drop down from above onto beds to find a meal.
Orkin of Canada says that, since bed bugs are nocturnal and small, detecting them can be challenging. Usually blood stains on sheets or black spots of dried bed bug excrement indicate an infestation even before bugs are seen.
Bed bugs tend to be discovered in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, and in the folds of curtains. Bed bugs may hide in drawer joints or in electrical receptacles. They even can hide in cracks along the top or bottom of a wall.
Bed bugs can survive and remain active at temperatures as low as 46 F, advises the EPA. Heat is what kills them most readily, and a room or area must be hotter than 113 F consistently to do so.
Avoiding bed bugs requires diligence. Reducing clutter, inspecting secondhand furniture for bed bugs and vacuuming frequently can help. Check luggage racks and hotel rooms for bed bugs prior to remaining in the room. Cold and hot treatments may kill some of the bed bugs, but an infestation usually will require treatment by a professional exterminator.
Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to overnight and then rinse away the mineral deposits.

Clear debris. Garden beds and surrounding landscapes that survived winter without being damaged might still be littered with debris. Remove fallen leaves, branches and even litter that blew about on windy winter days before planting season. Make sure to discard any debris effectively so it does not find its way back into the garden.

Gray or pink grass: Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to snow is gray or pink grass. The NALP reports that this is a byproduct of snow mold caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary, as the NALP notes these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. If the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary.

Honor fallen heroes by creating handmade luminaries to line your front walkway, porch, or driveway. Use clean mason jars, red/white/blue tissue paper, and LED tea lights. Kids can help cut tissue into small pieces and mod-podge them onto the jars.Add a small tag with the name of a veteran you’d like to remember or simply write “Thank You” or “We Remember.” At dusk, the soft glow is a moving tribute that neighbors and passersby will appreciate.

By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have HIV and pulmonary hypertension. I was part of a research study, and a scan found blockages of about 50% in my carotid arteries. I’ve never had any symptoms or a stroke. Do I need to have surgery? -- V.P.
ANSWER: In general, screening for blockages in the carotid arteries that provide blood flow to the brain is not recommended, but occasionally, I do see people who get the diagnosis made as part of a study or as a result of a diagnostic test that was performed for some other reason. Screening means that there are no present symptoms, and the management of asymptomatic blockages is different from symptomatic ones.
Not everybody with blockages needs surgical intervention. Guidelines recommend against surgery in people with no symptoms who have less than 70% stenosis. Only when the blockage is greater than 70% is surgery considered.
Medical treatment is effective at reducing the risk of a stroke and includes a high dose of a potent statin agent, aspirin, the careful control of high blood pressure and diabetes (if appropriate), quitting smoking, a healthy diet (such as Mediterraneanstyle), regular exercise, and weight reduction in some people.
HIV itself increases the risk of stroke by about 40% compared to people without HIV, so it is appropriate to be more aggressive at reducing risk factors. This is similar to what we see in people with chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, who have a higher heart disease and stroke risk than what would be expected based on their other risk factors.
Your HIV provider may wish to consult an expert in cardiovascular disease prevention to help you reduce your stroke risk, although many HIV experts are also skilled primary care doctors themselves. Keeping HIV under control (ideally with no detectable virus) may help reduce inflammation and consequently bring down the additional risk of heart attack and stroke associated with HIV.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My spouse is frustrated by a nagging case of plantar fasciitis. It’s been continuing for five or six months now. No amount of stretching, icing or resting seems to help. They are considering using a plantar fasciitis sock device that holds the foot in a specific position to provide relief. I am wondering if you could provide any other suggestions on how to reduce or eliminate this problem. -- M.R.
ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is among the most common causes of foot pain, with nearly 1% of people complaining of plantar fasciitis pain during the previous month. Inflammation and pain most commonly occur at the bottom of the foot, just in front of the heel. The pain is often worst during the first step in the morning. Rest and cushioned shoes or heel pads are helpful for most people. I am cautious about recommending stretching, especially when the pain is severe, as overdoing stretching can make things worse.Still, most people find stretching to be of benefit. When symptoms do not get resolved with conservative management, I refer patients to a podiatrist. Some people just take a long time to heal, but 80% are better within a year. When conservative measures have failed to bring relief, your spouse’s podiatrist might consider an injection of a steroid.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Recently, while dining at T’s Restaurant in Webster for breakfast, I had to help my husband sit down in the booth, and cut his pancakes and bacon for him. He has some disabilities. When we finished, the waitress came by and said that we were all set regarding the bill. I looked at her, puzzled, and she told us that another patron had noticed how I had cared for my husband, and paid our bill! We were so taken aback by that gesture. Our deepest gratitude and thanks to that kind soul. May God bless you!
Please don’t pull in close behind the automatic car washes. I can tell you when you prepaid every month and you have to go through and trigger it to your windshield tag, it never works the first time. I have to back up and try it again. With somebody so close behind me I can’t back up and I’m stuck there. In other words, it never works the first time; you have to back up and try it again every single time. Please give us space.
An auctioneer came to my home and told me he could sell all the things I had to sell, giving me 75% of the money he received and he’d keep only 25% for himself. I said good. He seemed like a decent man. October 2024, he loaded a large trailer with all my stuff, including a bedroom with all the furniture. They were in my garage about four hours taking everything they could. To this day, I haven’t gotten anything from him. I do have pictures of all the stuff they took. I don’t know what to do at this time. Do not trust anyone who comes to your house telling you they want to auction off your goods as they did mine. Be aware and beware.
Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. Elsa Maxwell was dubbed “hostess with the mostest” and had an affinity for throwing luxurious and entertaining parties. She often organized scavenger hunts for the guests that involved roaming around town, seeking objects from a list.

Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people.
Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

Some of us are new to retirement and the questions quickly become: Now what? What do I do with my days? Do I continue to set the alarm for the same time in the mornings?
If you planned in detail for your retirement and have a long list of things you intend to do, you know where to begin.
But the questions about what to do with our retired days can be poignant for those who perhaps didn’t have a choice about retirement. Maybe there were health considerations. Maybe there were expectations of retirement upon reaching a certain age in a certain career. But for whatever reason, here’s retirement, ready or not. Now what?
Start with a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list, the longer the better, of every interest you have. Ideally, somewhere on that list are the makings of worthwhile activities that are physical, social and mental.
Here are some random possibilities: explore photography, teach swimming at the YMCA, write a novel, knit or crochet hats and mittens for the local Santa fund next winter, create a family scrapbook with genealogy information and photos for the next generation, play pickleball at the rec center, become a Citizen Scientist (see CitizenScience.gov), join a walking group, take a pottery class with a grandchild.
Then there are the all-important brain-stretcher activities: learn to play piano or guitar (or brush up on old skills), take a college course, play chess online, take a computer class to upgrade your skills, learn a language online (see Duolingo.com), read a book a week or start a book club.
My personal list includes dogs at the animal shelter. There are lots of dogs who need to be taken on adventure walking afternoons to pick up their spirits. I can do that a few times a week.

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.
Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
