HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY
Substitute for refined sugar: Refined sugar offers little to no nutritional value and is full of empty calories. Heathline says that honey has bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. The antioxidants in honey, which include phenols and flavonoids, may help prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

Grubs: Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extension Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. The lawn and garden experts at GardenTech® note that wilted grass blades are often the first indicator of a grub infestation, which is followed by patches of brown turf and eventually death. Crows, skunks and moles eat grubs, so the sight of them in a lawn could indicate an infestation.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.
Stinging insects such as bees and wasps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. However, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years.
Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.
As a result, many people have realized the importance of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared toward providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) wants to remind homeowners that while creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital everyyear.
People with known allergies to insect stings or with asthma should be especially careful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and wasps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should always be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact with a stinging insect, swatting at it will often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slowly walk in one direction until the insect losesinterest.
Maintaining a garden that serves as a welcome oasis for wild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great way to protect pollinators. Without proper beekeeping training, however, homeowners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property.
If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location where the bees can be allowed to thrive without posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage,as well as attract peststo the property.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS
Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

Stray cat advice stirs up pet owners
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I received quite a few responses to my recent article on a stray cat that was being fed by a neighbor! Here are a couple of them from opposite sides.
DEAR PAWS: Bad advice in your article regarding stray cats. The complaining neighbor never mentions she has a cat while expressing concern for neighbor cats. This means she’s a busybody or a cat hater who should mind her own business. Why should she care if the cat feeder buys specialty food? Not her business, and you should have said so.
Your answer mentions contracting FIV. This is a small risk. If cat owners are worried about disease, they should keep their cats inside. You didn’t mention that the complainer could help by getting involved with TNR [trap-neuter-return], by working with the feeder to help the homeless cats. There are proactive ways to help. You should have commended the person who feeds the cats for helping. We need more people like her and less like the person who was complaining. -- Debbi J.
DEAR PAWS: I completely disagree with your answer to feeding outdoor stray cats. Those cats would not be strays if PEOPLE would act like grownups, spay and neuter their pets and stop dumping cats whenever they feel like it.
One unspayed female dumped outside will struggle to survive and can have two or three litters a year. Her babies will be feral because they don’t have human contact. At three months of age the kitten can also reproduce. There could be 40 or so by the end of the year. Relocating them does not work. A trap/neuter/return program reduces their numbers humanely.

Floater in Eye Proves To Be Incredibly Distracting
Q.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 67-year-old male with generally good vision. I’ve had a few floaters in my eyes over the years, but they have generally been small and have not significantly affected my vision. However, about six months ago, I suddenly had a large floater appear in one of my eyes that did affect my vision. It is right in the center of my field of vision and is very distracting.
I had a checkup with my optometrist soon after, and she said there were no major issues with my eye. She said that my brain would adjust to the floater so I would not notice it as much. However, six months later, I still find it very distracting. I frequently have to move my eye to try and get it out of my center vision so I can see clearly. Are there any treatments that can be done to remove distracting floaters? -- D.H.
Sue
DeBruyne
, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
ANSWER: ”Floaters” are bits of cellular debris in the vitreous humor, which is the gel-filled space in between the lens and the retina. The sudden appearance of floaters can represent serious eye disease, such as a detached retina, so it was wise to get an evaluation when you noticed a sudden change.
A.
The eye does not have a way to remove floaters, so you will have them as long as you live unless you do something about it. As your optometrist said, they don’t bother most people; however, several of my readers over the years have been so bothered by floaters that they have undergone surgical vitrectomy. This is the removal of all the gel material from the vitreous cavity, including all (or nearly all) of the vitreous opacities that cause floaters. Published complication rates with this procedure are less than 1% in experienced hands.
I have also read about using a laser to break up large floaters into smaller and presumably easier-to-ignore pieces, but I have no personal experience with this. In addition, the literature is mixed.
So much to offer, all under one roof.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP
Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

East Rochester/Penfield kindness
Thank you to the kind gentleman at the Penfield Wegmans who offered to buy my grocery items on the conveyor belt before knowing the cost because they hadn’t been rung up yet. It was baseball season, and I was wearing a pink NY Yankees cap. It meant a lot to me.
Also, during Christmas week, at Leo’s Bakery, a very nice gentleman in line saw that my credit card was rejected by the machine and offered to pay for my holiday cake. He saw that his good deed would help move the line along faster. He did not know the total amount!
Penfield and East Rochester people have kindness in their hearts. Thank you both!
Helpful Volunteers
Thank you to the VITA tax volunteers at the local college. Taking the time to prepare taxes for seniors free of charge is a blessing. Meant a lot to me and I’m sure others. Very grateful to these college students for their time and their knowledge.
Need to stop venting, take action
After reading BURNING GARBAGE IS ILLEGAL, I felt the need to submit my own Vent. This person needed to call their local Fire Marshall regarding the person illegally burning, not just write a Vent. People don’t like to involve themselves so they complain about situations instead of phoning authorities who would investigate and issue fines and penalties. I applaud those citizens who do take appropriate action and not just keep complaining. Authorities are not going to disclose the name of a person who called them.
Dogs in Cafés
I went to a local café and they were allowing non service dogs inside. If they were truly service dogs or service dogs in training, I fully understand allowing them to be there. But trying to eat while listening to a yapping puppy and watching a larger dog almost knock over the owner to get to the puppy was not the most pleasant way to enjoy some coffee and food. There is outdoor seating so if you feel the need to bring your non service, non trained dog to a restaurant/café then that is the place for you to sit.
SENIOR NEWS LINE

Starting a Garden Indoors
The many feet of snow on the ground where I live is an indication of just how far I am from starting a vegetable garden this year. However, it’s not too early to start vegetable seeds indoors.
Not all vegetables are good candidates for starting inside from seed (root vegetables such as carrots won’t do well started in shallow containers), but peppers, onions and spinach are good candidates to start indoors. Later, I’ll add seedlings for more variety, including marigolds to repel garden pests.
On my to-do list:
Schedule the guy with his tiller to come break up the ground in a month. There’s no sense in renting a heavy machine I’ll have no way to operate.
Order a load of mulch for delivery later to be spread for weed control and preserving moisture in the soil.
Cut the milk cartons I’ve saved over the winter into seed germination pots. A 3-inch depth will be deep enough -- and they’re free. A layer of plastic wrap will serve as a humidity dome.
Collect from my neighbor all the ice-pop sticks her grandchildren have left so I can use them as plant markers.
Be sure the indoor grow light works, that I don’t need a new bulb.
But most fun of all the things on my to-do list will be choosing the seeds and deciding what to grow. Catalogs have been arriving (they all also have websites), each more beautiful than the last.
If you have no yard, consider container gardening. If you have a sunny location, you can grow peas, strawberries, lettuce, potatoes, spinach and so much more right outside your door. Do an online search for “container vegetable garden” for advice on the size of containers to use, the type of soil and a list of vegetables that should not be planted next to each other.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL
Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses.

Mikaela Engstrom
RIT SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHER EMPOWERS WOMEN IN SPORTS WITH HER PLAYBOOK BLOG
BY NIKKI LO N G
For many, sports photography is about capturing the action—the split-second shot, the game-winning goal, the raw emotion of victory and defeat. But for Mikaela Engstrom, it’s about something more. It’s about ensuring the women who shape the sports world are given the spotlight they deserve. rough her blog, Her Playbook, women in every aspect of sports—from athletes, creatives, equipment managers, and more— share firsthand experiences from their careers while inspiring the next generation of women in sports.
CHASING THE SHOT
Engstrom’s journey into sports photography began in high school, where a yearbook class first introduced her to the possibility of working in the sports industry. “I wasn’t aware at the time that I could work in sports as a career,” she recalls. “It’s been my goal ever since.” Her dream job? Working for the Professional Women’s Hockey League or National Hockey League, or as a director of photography for a Big-12 university.
Engstrom, who currently studies photography at RIT and serves as the student supervisor of photography for
the university’s athletic department, has “loved every moment of working in sports so far…Each experience has allowed me to push my work and knowledge of each sport that I shoot.”
GROWING THE GAME
Her Playbook began as a class photo project, but it quickly turned into something much bigger. “ e assignment was to make work about what inspires you,” she explains, “and I am continuously inspired by the many different kinds of women I’m surrounded by in the sports community.”
rough her work in sports photography, Mikaela noticed an underrepresentation of women in sports media. She wanted to create a space where women in sports—whether they play, coach, work behind the scenes, or are simply fans—could share their stories. Her Playbook became that space, a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of women in sports and providing young girls with role models who prove that they, too, belong in this industry.
“I made this platform for my younger self and all other girls in sports who are looking for an athlete, coach, or creative like them and want to know how they got there,” she says. She hopes “young girls can use this as a resource to understand that women do have a place in this male-dominated community and that they can get to where they dream of being as well.”
Eventually, Mikaela hopes to organize virtual and inperson discussions with women in sports, offering aspiring professionals the opportunity to learn directly from those who have paved the way.
ADVICE FOR WOMEN PURSUING SPORTS CAREERS
For women looking to break into the sports industry, Mikaela has one key piece of advice: “Just keep going.” It’s easy to let a negative comment shake your confidence, but she encourages you to push through those moments and prove why you belong. e sports industry, like many others, canbechallenging, butresilienceandperseverance will set you apart. Every setback is an opportunity to grow, improve, and prove not only to others but also to yourself that you are capable and deserving of success.
Share your original stories about local heroes, community events, school achievements, or hidden gems–email your story idea to hometown@gvpennysaver.com!
Another piece of advice she has for anyone wanting to work in sports—not just women—is to take the initiative in building connections with those you admire and aspire to learn from. Reaching out to professionals in the field may seem intimidating at first, but networking can be one of the most powerful tools for growth. While not everyone will respond, many will, and more o en than not, they will be willing to offer guidance, share their experiences, and help you succeed.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Continue to be loyal: A recent study from researchers at the Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. That highlights just how valuable repeat customers are to small businesses. Consumers who have had positive experiences with small businesses in their communities in the past can continue to support those companies by looking to them first when they need new products or services. Doing so not only helps small businesses retain more customers, but it increases the likelihood that consumers will again have positive buying experiences.

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.

PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Unplug when you get home. Perhaps the simplest and most effective way for parents to regain a healthy work-life balance is to unplug their devices. Employing “Do not disturb” settings on smartphones and turning off tablets can ensure parents don’t spend their time at home working but connecting with their families.
