Teahasbeenenjoyedasabeverage for thousands of years and has featured prominently in many cultures during that time. The cultural practice of drinking tea is believed to have originated in ancient China. Although there are many different types of tea, the World Tea Council says black tea is the most consumed tea across the globe, comprising around 75 percent of total tea consumption. The most popular type of black tea is Assam tea, which is grown in India. The second-most widely consumed tea is green tea, which accounts for approximately 20 percent of total tea consumption.
As the summer days grow shorter and the crisp scent of autumn fills the air, families everywhere are preparing for another exciting school year. Whether you’re a student stepping back into the classroom, a teacher setting up for the months ahead, or a parent adjusting to a new routine, the start of the academic year brings both challenges and opportunities. By adopting healthy habits early, you can set yourself on a path toward physical wellness, mental resilience, and overall success.
Prioritize Sleep
Rest is essential. Children, teens, and adults should aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night. A consistent bedtime routine helps the body recharge, improves concentration, and boosts overall energy levels for the busy days ahead.
Fuel with Nutrition and Hydration
Begin each morning with a balanced breakfast, try to avoid or limit sugar-filled snacks, and make water your go-to beverage throughout the day. Proper nutrition powers both the body and mind, giving students the focus needed to learn and thrive.
Stay Active
Exercise isn’t just for athletes. Make time for at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Fall is the perfect season for family walks, bike rides, or even backyard games—simple ways to stay healthy while spending time together.
Manage Stress Wisely
e start of a school year o en brings packed schedules and new responsibilities. Incorporating stress-management techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or relaxing hobbies can help keep anxiety in check and create a sense of balance.
Stay Organized and Connected
Maintaining a calendar is a practical way to balance work, school, and personal activities, reducing stress and improving productivity. Equally important are social connections. Spend time with friends, family, or join clubs and organizations to build meaningful relationships that support emotional well-being.
Practice Hygiene and Self-Care
As classrooms and activities bring people together, germs are inevitable. Good hygiene—like handwashing, sanitizing, and covering coughs—helps prevent illness and keeps everyone healthier throughout the season.
Set Realistic Goals and Be Present
Success doesn’t happen overnight. Create realistic goals, avoid overwhelming yourself, and remember it’s okay to ask for help when needed. Limiting unnecessary screen time also helps you stay present in daily activities, making both work and relaxation more fulfilling.
As we move into fall, let’s commit to healthier routines that bring out the best in ourselves and one another. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and successful 2024–2025 school year!
Avoid alcohol. Some may consider alcohol a sleep aide, and there’s good reason for that perception, even if it’s misguided. Hackensack Meridian Health notes that alcohol acts as a depressant for the central nervous system that can cause brain activity to slow down. As a result, alcohol can increase feelings of relaxation and tiredness. However, that effect is not long-lasting, and as alcohol levels in the blood drop, individuals are likely to wake up and may even find it hard to fall back asleep. Waking up in the middle of the night cuts down on the time individuals spend in the most restorative stage of sleep, which is why individuals often feel as if they got little rest after a night of drinking.
DO note that certain foods can react chemically with the metal container, especially high-acid foods like tomatoes and fruit juices. Therefore, the shelf life of these types of foods is shorter than others. High-acid canned foods should be used in 12 to 18 months, while low-acid canned foods can last two to five years.

Consume cooked vegetables within a day or two. Healthline notes that exposure to air after cooking can decrease the vitamin C content of vegetables. This is something for people to keep in mind, particularly if they like to prepare meals in advance due to hectic schedules that leave little time for daily cooking. Consume cooked vegetables within a day or so of preparing them to avoid losing out on nutrients.

Another great fair week in Hemlock this year. Thank you to all who run the fair. My family had a wonderful time. Also a shout out to the 4-H Youth. It was great to see the animals and how well taken care of these animals were. You all did an amazing job. Can’t wait for next year’s fair.
Finishing up at Canandaigua Wegmans self-checkout, I found both my credit card and my Shoppers Card were not in my purse. When I told the attendant I had cash, she directed me to the Service desk. There I was asked my name, where upon I was handed both of my cards. They had fallen out of my purse in the parking lot. (Note to self - ALWAYS ZIP YOUR PURSE.) A very good Samaritan had brought them into the store. Whoever you are - a million thanks.
I was at a local Tops grocery store recently. I use the bus. Had several heavy bags in the rain that day. A stranger with a dark blue van asked if I needed a lift. Went out of her way to get me back home.

Over the past 6 months, the price of groceries has increased exponentially. A 12 oz bag of coffee cost 4 dollars more. A pound of Angus beef increased from $7.50 to $10.00. Produce is expected to increase by 40 percent because there are no longer workers to pick the crops. Times are hard and they will only become worse.
It is great that you walk your dogs, it is good for both of you. What isn’t great is that you don’t pick up after them. And there are some that do pick up, but decide it is ok to leave the little bag on a lawn or the sidewalk. PICK UP the bag and take it home, or find a dumpster nearby, usually there are plenty of them. It is not right that you leave your mess for others to take care of!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your article regarding the cat not swallowing his medications. My father taught us years ago to teach our puppies to eat wet food off a spoon. Now that the dogs are older and our vet has them on glucosamine and vitamins C and E, we put the pills with the spoonful of wet dog food and voila, they eat it! In fact they look forward to their pill time. I don’t know if the same method would work with a cat, but I would think so. -- Sharon A., via e-mail
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: After reading your column on getting cats to swallow pills, I wanted to share information about a product I found to be helpful in this regard. It is called Pill Pockets, and it is available at many veterinary hospitals and most major pet stores. The product is essentially a treat with an open side to allow the pill to be put inside and then closed up by pressing in the sides. It comes in pouches of approximately 45 treats and in different flavors like salmon and chicken.
My cat loves the treat, and it allows me to give her a pill without any hassle or stress for either of us. It is also available for dogs. Please check it out. Your readers may find this product helpful. -- Elaine B., Belmont, Calif.
DEAR SHARON AND ELAINE: Many thanks to both of you! I received several helpful tips from readersongivingmedicationstopets, fromhiding the pills in food to ordering custom preparations from pharmacists. Sometimes a pet owner will have to try more than one method to see which works best, and I’m grateful to everyone for their suggestions.Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Volunteers typically offer their time and services in an effort to help others, but researchers believe volunteering has a profound effect on individuals who lend a hand, particularly when those pitching in are children and teenagers.
A 2023 study published in the journal JAMA Network Open found that volunteering is associated with improved overall health and wellness among children and adolescents. Researchers behind the study found that children who volunteered were 34 percent more likely to be in excellent or very good health compared to peers who did not volunteer. In addition, 66 percent of child and adolescent volunteers were more likely to be seen as “flourishing” and 35 percent were less likely to develop behavioral problems compared to their peers who did not volunteer. These findings are nothing to scoff at, as mental health issues continue to affect young people at rates that many find alarming. For example, recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates nearly one in three girl high school students considered suicide in 2021. Though additional research into a potential link between volunteering and improved mental health among modern adolescents is necessary, it’s worth nothing that studieshavelongsincedetermined that volunteering is good for volunteers’ mental health, with volunteers often reporting greater life satisfaction than individuals who do not volunteer.
DEAR DR. ROACH: When I have appointments with my physicians at our local, highly rated academic health system, they no longer do a physical exam. But in the aftervisit note, there is a documented and complete physical exam that doesn’t reflect reality. This happened on all types of visits, including annual visits and pre- and post-surgery visits.
If I am examined by a resident, the attending physician will attest in the after-visit note to having examined me alongside the resident when, in actuality, the physician was not in the room. I find this appalling, but it seems to be common practice. These doctors are billing for services that they do not deliver. Do you see any effort in the medical world to respond to this? -- J.H.
ANSWER: The new electronic medical record systems make it easy to document a complete physical exam, sometimes with a single click. If this happens once, it’s a mistake. If it happens consistently, this is at least a system error, if not deliberate deception. The term used in the industry is “upcoding” because documentation of a complete examination allows for higher billing to the insurance company.
Physicians need to be very careful not to document a physical exam that they didn’t do. A less-kind word for consistently doing this practice is “fraud.” Penalties can be up to tens of thousands of dollars per false claim. The rules for resident supervision are complicated. In general, billing can only be done for services that are provided by or are under the direct supervision of the attending physician. There are exceptions to this, such as resident physicians who provide primary care. However, once again, saying that you were there supervising the resident when you weren’t is against the law.
Now if the attending physician comes in the room and asks questions to confirm the key findings of your medical history, they do not have to do a complete examination to fulfill the obligations for the primary care exemption.
Outside of primary care, the attending physician must be physically present for the key portions of the services that are being billed.
Q. A.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I saw your recent column about the wife with intractable depression. I can relate, but you barely glanced over what has been life-changing for me as a treatment: TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation). It is quick, easy and painless, and most insurance companies (even Medicare) fully cover it. To be frank, Doc, not nearly enough suffering people have ever even heard of TMS as an option. Would you illustrate to your readers just a tad more about how powerful it can be as a treatment option? -- R.F.W.
ANSWER: Most people with depression respond well to treatment with a combination of psychotherapy and one of the standard medications, but some people need to try several medications before they find one that works for them. Unfortunately, there are people who do not get good results with medication. TMS is an option in these situations (but you don’t have to fail with multiple medications to try TMS).
Even in people who have failed with multiple medications, about 30% will have a “marked” improvement or a resolution of their symptoms. TMS doesn’t cure everybody, but I agree that it’s a therapy that needs to be more widely used. The biggest problem is that it isn’t available everywhere.

Helen W. Gannon
August 25, 2025
Mrs. Helen W. Gannon, 85, passed away on August 25, 2025, in Hospice care at Medina Memorial Hospital in Medina, New York. A devoted nurse, loving mother and grandmother, and lifelong volunteer, Helen’s life was marked by compassion, dedication, and deep love for family and friends.
Born on June 25,1940,in the Flatbush Avenue section of Brooklyn, New York, Helen was the daughter of Ernest and Anna Walther, both of whom emigrated from Europe seeking better lives in America. Helen learned the value of hard work early on, working in her father’s grocery store and helping raise her younger brother. Helen was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan (until Dem Bums left New York in 1957).Staying true to Brooklyn, she became a Mets fan when the team was founded in 1962 and remained one to the very end.
Helen graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, and became a registered nurse. She worked at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown in many capacities over 34 years, but was proudest of her role as Head Nurse of Pediatrics and the love she gave to the children there. She later became a clinical instructor at BOCES and assistant supervisor at e Meadows Nursing Home in Otsego County. rough each position, Helen touched countless lives.
Helen married Truman Gannon in 1970, with whom she shared many years until his passing. Helen took great pride in her family and found immense joy in her granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband, Truman Gannon; her parents, Ernest and Anna (Surin) Walther; brother, Herman Walther; and half-sister, Anna Surin. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Richard and daughter-in-law Shannon Welch; granddaughters, Aubrey, Taya, and Kaylin Gannon; brother, Ernest (Maureen) Walther; sisterin-law, Virginia Walther; nephew, Robert Walther; nieces, Donna (Scott) Noll, Andrea (Josh) Long, Lara Smith, Stephanie (Robert) Morlino; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
Helen was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Native Daughters of Cooperstown, the St. Peter Lutheran Church Ladies’ Group, and served as Treasurer and Advancement Coordinator for Boy Scout Troop 1254 of Cooperstown. She also volunteered, knitting caps for newborns as well as patients undergoing cancer treatment, prayer shawls, and mittens for schoolchildren. Her hands were busy when there was someone to help or comfort.
Helen’s legacy will live on in the warmth she brought to those she cared for, as a nurse, as a friend, and as family.
e family wishes to extend their thanks to Medina Memorial Hospital, the Second Floor staff, and Orleans County Hospice for their support and graciousness. A memorial service will be held for Helen on September 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1355 West Avenue, Medina, New York. Donations can be sent to her favorite charity, Mary Cariola (Children’s) Center: Walking on Sunshine (Team Taya), 1000 Elmwood Ave., Suite 100 Rochester, NY 14620 (or online at https://marycariolacenter.salsalabs.org/walkingonsunshine2025/t/ teamtaya) in her honor.
Works with religious officials: Very often a funeral home is a conduit that facilitates all facets of the funeral process. They may reach out to a preferred house of worship to organize a mass or other religious service, and will also contact the cemetery and work with them to secure a plot and deed. This also alleviates pressure down the line on grieving family members who need time to mourn.

TIPS TO GET CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT EXERCISE
Look for new ways to exercise. Plan vacations and day trips around an activity. Perhaps the family can learn how to surf or snorkel on a trip; otherwise, a trip to the zoo or a museum can involve a lot of walking.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).
