to feel a little overwhelmed and may wonder if there’s anything they can do to make hectic schedules more manageable.
Time management strategies can be an effective tool in busy adults’ arsenals. Efficient time management can free up more minutes or hours in the day, which can ultimately afford adults more time to exhale and thus make each day seem a little less overwhelming. Time management may require a little trial and error before adults find a formula that works for them, but they can help busy adults efficiently manage each day and hopefully reduce instances when individuals feel overwhelmed.
HERE’S A TIP: Smartphones and computers are notorious for viruses -- but I’m thinking of the kind that can make YOU sick. These devices are touched by us constantly. And then we stick them right to our faces! Take the time daily to clean off your device with an alcohol wipe to decontaminate it. Your respiratory and digestive systems will thank you.
Ways to strengthen your faith during Holy Week: Pray the Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross are commonly prayed during Lent, particularly on Good Friday. Traditionally there are 14 Stations of the Cross, each depicting a different moment in Jesus’ Passion and Death. Praying the stations often is a group church activity, but they also can be prayed solo. Getting an up close and personal understanding of the final moments in the life of Jesus Christ can have a transformative effect.

TIPS TO GET A MORE RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP
Keep devices out of the bedroom. Screens are everywhere in modern life, and that includes the bedroom. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation’s 2022 Sleep in America® Poll found that 58 percent of survey participants acknowledged looking at screens within an hour before bedtime. The NSF reports that device usage so close to bedtime can adversely affect sleep quality because the blue light emitted from screens has shorter wavelengths than other colors in the visible light spectrum, which results in more alertness than warmer tones. The blue light actually confuses the brain into thinking it’s earlier in the day, thus making it harder to fall asleep.

Thank you to the kind gentleman at the Penfield Wegmans who offered to buy my grocery items on the conveyor belt before knowing the cost because they hadn’t been rung up yet. It was baseball season, and I was wearing a pink NY Yankees cap. It meant a lot to me.
Also, during Christmas week, at Leo’s Bakery, a very nice gentleman in line saw that my credit card was rejected by the machine and offered to pay for my holiday cake. He saw that his good deed would help move the line along faster. He did not know the total amount!
Penfield and East Rochester people have kindness in their hearts. Thank you both!

Helpful Volunteers
Thank you to the VITA tax volunteers at the local college. Taking the time to prepare taxes for seniors free of charge is a blessing. Meant a lot to me and I’m sure others. Very grateful to these college students for their time and their knowledge.
Acquaint yourself with all the offerings at your local library. Books may bethefirstthingpeoplethinkof whenponderinglocallibraries, andmodern branches still maintain extensive catalogs of books spanning the genres. But libraries also offer more than books. Film fans may be surprised to learn libraries typically have extensive catalogs of films that can be borrowed on DVD, and some even allow movies to be streamed through library-affiliated streaming services. Libraries also offer services to adults, including seniors, and children that can range from tax preparation tips to passport application assistance to craft projects for youngsters.
Need to stop venting, take action
After reading BURNING GARBAGE IS ILLEGAL, I felt the need to submit my own Vent. This person needed to call their local Fire Marshall regarding the person illegally burning, not just write a Vent. People don’t like to involve themselves so they complain about situations instead of phoning authorities who would investigate and issue fines and penalties. I applaud those citizens who do take appropriate action and not just keep complaining. Authorities are not going to disclose the name of a person who called them.
Dogs in Cafés
I went to a local café and they were allowing non service dogs inside. If they were truly service dogs or service dogs in training, I fully understand allowing them to be there. But trying to eat while listening to a yapping puppy and watching a larger dog almost knock over the owner to get to the puppy was not the most pleasant way to enjoy some coffee and food. There is outdoor seating so if you feel the need to bring your non service, non trained dog to a restaurant/café then that is the place for you to sit.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME TO ACCOMMODATE MODERN LIVING
Remodeling projects allow homeowners to put their personal stamps on a property. In addition to choosing a color and design scheme that fits a particular aesthetic, homeowners may want to outfit their homes with various features that can make them more accommodating to modern living.Homeowners can use these ideas as a springboard for remodeling projects designed to modernize their homes.
· Open floor plans: Open floor plans remain coveted characteristics of modern home architecture. An open layout enables occupants to feel like they are enjoying spaces together without having to be on top of one another. Since sightlines are not obstructed in open floor plans, homeowners can enjoy a cohesive design style across each level of the home.
· Eco-friendly features: Eco-friendly features modernize homes and may even earn homeowners rebates from the government. From positioning rooms to take advantage of natural sunlight to using environmentally responsible materials throughout a home, modern homes can function with a much smaller carbon footprint than older structures.
· Smart home technology: A smart home is equipped with appliances and other devices that can be controlled remotely, typically from a phone or computer connected to the internet. Investopedia notes that smart home technology offers homeowners convenience and cost savings. Smart home technology is available across a wide range of budgets, ranging from thousands of dollars for a complete home automation to roughly $100 for a small change like a smart thermostat.
· Accessibility features: A home that can grow with its residents is advantageous. When choosing renovations, features like slip-resistant flooring, stylish grab bars and low-threshold or barrier-free showers can enable homeowners to age in place more comfortably.
· Dual owner’s suites: Dual owner’s suites can be an asset for couples who choose to sleep separately. The Sleep Foundation says individuals choose to sleep in different rooms for a variety of reasons, notably reduced sleep interruptions and improved sleep quality. Plus, an extra bedroom can come in handy when one person is ill or in the event a partner snores.Rather than one person in the relationship getting the “lesser” space, certain homebuilders now offer plans for dual owner’s suites so both people get the features they desire in a bedroom.
· Three-season room: Many homeowners aspire to bridge the gap between the indoors and outside. Three-season rooms help transition from the yard to the interior of a home, and offer a touch of nature without the bugs or unpleasant elements.
A number of home improvements can bring homes up to the standards of modern living.

According to the Zillow Home Value Index, the median value of homes in the United States increased dramatically between 2019 and 2024. Data from the online real estate listing service indicates the median value of a home in the U.S. in August 2019 was $243,386.Just half a decade later, that value had risen to $361,282, marking a 67 percent increase in median home value over that time. Housing prices have experienced an even greater uptick in Canada, where data from the Canadian Real Estate Association indicates that the average selling price of homes sold in August 2024 was $717,800 CAD ($529,427.75 USD), a roughly 73 percent increase since August 2019, when the average homes sold in Canada went for $522,700 ($385,527.84 USD). The spike in housing costs has greatly outpaced inflation. In fact, according to a 2024 report from the real estate data firm Clever, if home prices had increased at the same rate as inflation since 1963, the median price of a home in the U.S. would be $177,511, which is less than half the median value reported by Zillow in August 2024.

eat healthy, they also might not be as nutritious as shoppers hope. According to Verywell Fit, heat, oxygen and light are the three factors that lead to nutrient loss. When produce is uncut, the interiors are of the food are protected from oxygen and light. Once cuts are made, such as when apples are sliced, then nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E might be lost.
Exercise in the morning. A recent study from the World Health Organization published in the Lancet Global Health Journal found that 31 percent of adults don’t get enough exercise. Lack of routine physical activity has been linked to a host of negative health outcomes, including an increased risk for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and stroke. Adults who exercise at night may find that attempts to squeeze in early evening or nighttime workouts add to feelings of being overwhelmed brought on by busy schedules. Exercising in the morning can free up time for other tasks in the evening, and doing so can even make it easier to manage daily stress, as the Mayo Clinic reports that exercise in any form releases endorphins and helps to relieve stress.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 67-year-old male with generally good vision. I’ve had a few floaters in my eyes over the years, but they have generally been small and have not significantly affected my vision. However, about six months ago, I suddenly had a large floater appear in one of my eyes that did affect my vision. It is right in the center of my field of vision and is very distracting. I had a checkup with my optometrist soon after, and she said there were no major issues with my eye. She said that my brain would adjust to the floater so I would not notice it as much. However, six months later, I still find it very distracting. I frequently have to move my eye to try and get it out of my center vision so I can see clearly. Are there any treatments that can be done to remove distracting floaters? -- D.H. ANSWER: ”Floaters” are bits of cellular debris in the vitreous humor, which is the gel-filled space in between the lens and the retina. The sudden appearance of floaters can represent serious eye disease, such as a detached retina, so it was wise to get an evaluation when you noticed a sudden change.
The eye does not have a way to remove floaters,so you will have them as long as you live unless you do something about it. As your optometrist said, they don’t bother most people; however, several of my readers over the years have been so bothered by floaters that they have undergone surgical vitrectomy. This is the removal of all the gel material from the vitreous cavity, including all (or nearly all) of the vitreous opacities that cause floaters. Published complication rates with this procedure are less than 1% in experienced hands.
I have also read about using a laser to break up large floaters into smaller and presumably easier-to-ignore pieces, but I have no personal experience with this. In addition, the literature is mixed.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with sleep apnea decades ago. While I was not obese, I was a little overweight at the time and made a commitment to eat better. I lost 10-20 pounds, and I’m down to under 250 pounds at 6 feet, 1 inch tall. Voila, my sleep apnea was cured! I kept the weight off and have not snored since.
While you note the connection between excess weight and sleep apnea, I didn’t see any mention of weight loss as a cure. Is it really this easy, or was I just lucky? -- D.K.
ANSWER: Weight loss is effective at treating sleep apnea in many people. However, losing and keeping the weight off in the long-term is very hard for most people. The GLP-1 drug tirzepatide (Zepbound) was recently approved for obstructive sleep apnea in people who are obese, in combination with a healthy diet and physical activity. GLP-1 agonists are quite effective at helping people lose weight and keeping the weight off (as long as the person keeps taking the medication).
It’s critical to note that not everyone with obstructive sleep apnea is obese. Some people just have the anatomy in the back of their throats that makes sleep apnea more likely, despite having a normal weight. Weight loss may not help them at all in these cases.

Stray cat advice stirs up pet owners
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I received quite a few responses to my recent article on a stray cat that was being fed by a neighbor! Here are a couple of them from opposite sides.
DEAR PAWS: Bad advice in your article regarding stray cats. The complaining neighbor never mentions she has a cat while expressing concern for neighbor cats. This means she’s a busybody or a cat hater who should mind her own business. Why should she care if the cat feeder buys specialty food? Not her business, and you should have said so.
Your answer mentions contracting FIV. This is a small risk. If cat owners are worried about disease, they should keep their cats inside. You didn’t mention that the complainer could help by getting involved with TNR [trap-neuterreturn], by working with the feeder to help the homeless cats. There are proactive ways to help.
You should have commended the person who feeds the cats for helping. We need more people like her and less like the person who was complaining. -- Debbi J.
DEAR PAWS: I completely disagree with your answer to feeding outdoor stray cats. Those cats would not be strays if PEOPLE would act like grownups, spay and neuter their pets and stop dumping cats whenever they feel like it. One unspayed female dumped outside will struggle to survive and can have two or three litters a year. Her babies will be feral because they don’t have human contact. At three months of age the kitten can also reproduce. There could be 40 or so by the end of the year. Relocating them does not work. A trap/neuter/return program reduces their numbers humanely.
Getting a pet is a 15- to 20-year commitment. If you can’t do it, then don’t acquire a pet and certainly don’t dump them. -- Linda G.

Computers are vital for work or school. Computers can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a basic model to upwards of $3,000 for a top-ofthe-line machine. Either way, purchasing a computer involves a considerable sum of money and buyers may wonder just how far that money will go in terms of the computer’s longevity. According to the technology resource Nerds on Site®,theaveragelifeof acomputer falls between three to eight years, and varies depending on the type of the computer and how it is being used. A desktop computer tends to last around five years, while laptops have shorter lifespans because of the batteries needed to keep them running, damage that can occur when transporting the devices and heat buildup from inefficient cooling. Despite the relatively short lifespan of modern computers, users who emphasize proper care and maintenance can likely add years to the life expectancies of their devices.

FUNERAL PRE-PLANNING WITH A PRO EASES ANXIETY
Avoid confrontations: Working directly with a professional also helps alleviate the burden on family members, who may not agree on arrangements or concur on what they believe would be a loved one’s final wishes. When preplanning a funeral, individuals can spell out in their own words exactly what they desire and even finance the funeral in advance.
SERVICES OFFERED BY FUNERAL HOMES
Establish the desired ambiance: Funerals tend to be somber, but they also can be celebratory. Funeral home staff can help families establish the desired tone of the service by showcasing how the viewing space can be decorated and prepared for visitations.

TIPS TO GET CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT EXERCISE Choose interactive toys. Select toys for kids that require movement. These can include sporting activities, scooters, bicycles, and even video games that involve physical activity. Kids will be moving while they play, which is a first step.
Don’t forget to have fun while you color. There are no rules. Color inside the lines or outside them. Have fun!
TIPS TO FOSTER POSITIVE ATTITUDES IN KIDS Practice affirmations as a family. Life throws challenges at everyone, but some supportive words along the way can make all the difference. Big Life Journal, which offers tools for parents, teachers and counselors to help kids grow up confident, says affirmations like “I am enough” or “I am kind” can change attitudes. And everyone should remember failing is not always a negative. Failure can be the first step toward learning an important lesson.

BIG REASONS to Shop Small
Not just on Small Business Saturday, but every day that you can. Need milk, eggs, bread, or beer? Go to the local corner store instead – Say “hey” and get to know the owner who’s paying taxes to keep your neighborhood in tip-top shape.
Get vocal on social Post pictures, tweets, and status updates of either the small business you own, or of yourself shopping at one, and be sure to use the hashtag #ShopSmall. Also write positive Yelp reviews for the small businesses you love and support. Sign up for local business’ loyalty programs – Does a local business have a customer loyalty and rewards program? Sign up for it – not only will you be supporting a local business, but you’ll get discounts and rewards for it, too.
