How to finance long-term care needs Failing to plan for long-term care expenses may leave aging men and women with little or no assets late in life. AARP says that the cost of long-term care continues to rise and the array of options can make it difficult for families to find the best, most affordable care.

The median monthly costs for a semi-private room in a U.S. nursing facility hovered around $6,800 in 2016, according to The Genworth Cost of Care Survey. That adds up to roughly $82,000 per year.

Individuals who only anticipate hiring a home health aide should know that such options cost an average $3,800 per month.

Retirement savings can quickly dry up when long-term care is required.

Individuals need to keep in mind that, in 2014, the Social Security Administration said the average monthly retirement income from Social Security was just $1,294. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles.

Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent.

Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard.

Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules.

Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road.

Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console.

No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle.

Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way.

If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well.

MOUTH-WATERING FACTS Ordinarlily, a person produces between 0.75 and 1.5 liters of saliva daily, with peak production occurring during meals and the least amount of saliva being produced during sleep.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the best way to obtain and maintain healthy, white sclera? Mine appears to be a light, offwhite gray. -- M.T. ANSWER: Sclerae -- the whites of the eyes -- tend to thin with age and reveal the darker-gray choroid underneath. This is benign and common, but I don’t know of any way to prevent or reduce it.

Scleral color changes can happen with rare diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta, and some collagen diseases. The sclera also can change color as a result of scleritis (inflammation of the sclera), and this often happens in relation to Wegener’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The bottom line, though, is: If you are having no symptoms, it’s overwhelmingly likely that these changes are the benign form. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with positional vertigo. My doctor has me doing Cawthorne head exercises. Have you heard of these? Do they work? -- M.M.S. ANSWER: Vertigo is an abnormal sense of motion while still.

Many people describe it as a “spinning” sensation, but others feel it differently. The most common cause probably is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and rehabilitation exercises, such as the Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises, are very effective. Although medication is frequently prescribed, I recommend strongly against long-term use of medication, which can slow down or stop healing.

Although you can do the exercises on your own, I recommend learning how to do them properly and safely with an occupational or physical therapist.

ROACH: How long do shin splints last? Is there anything besides ice that will make them go away faster? My left shin started hurting a little more than three weeks ago. I ran on it once or twice, then I stopped, but it still hurts. Is this normal?

When do you think I can run on it? I did a longer run on a flat path, and normally I do it with hills, so I thought maybe that was the problem, but three weeks seems like too long. -- H.O. ANSWER: Pain in the shin bone (tibia) is common in runners, but the hard part is distinguishing between “shin splints,” properly called “medial tibial stress syndrome,” and a stress fracture of the tibia. A stress fracture usually has a discrete area of tenderness, but MTSS has more diffuse tenderness. An X-ray may be needed to be sure it isn’t a stress fracture, since the treatment is very different. A runner with a stress fracture needs to avoid impact activities like running, whereas MTSS usually gets better with just lower running mileage.

In your case, the degree of pain is higher than I would expect after three weeks. Local New York Youth Finalist In Frito-Lay Contest For Best Invention Idea Andrew Young, a fourteen-year old student from Western New York, has been named as a finalist in the nation-wide Dreamvention contest for the best new invention idea.

With nearly 13,000 submissions to the contest where one winner will receive the $250,000 grand prize, Andrew was named as one of five finalists. His invention, the “Toaster Shooter” originated from a time when Andrew observed his grandmother burning her fingers when attempting to remove toast from a hot toaster.

“I didn’t want my grandma to burn her fingers again, so I came up with the idea for the Toaster Shooter,” said young Andrew.

“When I saw the contest announced on The Ellen Show I decided to send my drawings in to see if I could win. It’s pretty cool that my invention was selected as one of the winners.”

“We were so excited for Andrew when the finalists were announced,” said Denise Young, Andrew’s mother. “Andrew has always been a creative kid and dreams of attending M.I.T. one day. Winning this contest would certainly help his dream come true.”
