I recently passed by a neighbor’s roadside sign that I thought read ‘fresh veggies.’ I turned around for some zucchini and to see what else they had. I understand prices are high for products and travel and the companies who run county fair concessions and rides need to make money. $5 is not bad to get in but try to eat. Drink. Stop Feeding e Varmints
For God’s sake please stop feeding the varmints in the neighborhood!! I know you think you’re being helpful, but leaving food of any sort in your yard is only inviting rodents and such into the neighborhood. I work nights and often sit on my porch late at night and people would be disgusted what creeps around after they are tucked into bed thinking they did a good deed by feeding skunks, rats, woodchucks, etc. And PLEASE turn your spotlight garage lights off at night! Metformin Can Help All People, Not Just Diabetics, Lose Weight
Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old woman who isn’t prediabetic or diabetic.My BMI is 31.2.My doctor has prescribed a trial of metformin for weight loss as an alternative to starting Ozempic or one of the other weight-loss drugs. I have lost three pounds in a month, which is a start; exercise and healthier eating is also encouraged.
What are your thoughts on this new weight-loss tool and its possible longterm success? -- J.H.
Q. A.
ANSWER: Metformin, a treatment for diabetes that works mostly by preventing the liver from making sugar, isn’t new and has been used to help people lose weight for at least 20 years. While it was first shown to help people with prediabetes or diabetes, it is also effective at helping people with normal blood sugar lose weight. However, the effectiveness is modest, with most people losing around 2-3 kilograms (about 5 pounds), which is stable as long as people continue taking the medicine.
I certainly agree with the changes in lifestyle. In studies, people who adhere to a healthier diet and exercise are likely to lose more weight than people who take metformin without lifestyle changes.
I’ve had occasional patients who get motivated by the success of metformin, making it easier for them to comply with the diet and exercise changes. I’ve also had people say that the weight they lose with metformin makes it easier to exercise. Metformin is moderately successful in preventing diabetes, but it is not as effective for weight loss as approved weight-loss medicines such as semaglutide (Ozempic).
Some of my patients have read about metformin as an anti-aging drug based on animal data, and there are studies ongoing to see whether this is true in humans. I do not recommend its use for this purpose outside of a clinical trial.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m unable to find out from my health care provider’s clinic whether they offer a vaccine for the specific variant of COVID that is now said to be spreading. Do you know if there is a vaccine for this, and who is making it? -- J.A.
ANSWER: The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee at the Food and Drug Administration recommends against a new vaccine formulation this fall, so it appears that we will be using the same vaccine as last year. Fortunately the current vaccine appears to be effective against the new NB.1.8.1 variant,which is now present in all areas that are monitored by the World Health Organization.
The FDA has approved a new, more-effective Moderna vaccine, but at the time of this writing, it has not yet been approved by the Centers for Disease Control. The new vaccine gives high protection with less antigens. However, the specific variants of COVID used for the vaccine will not be updated this year.

In the world of food recalls and alerts, just when you think you’ve seen it all, something even more scary and dangerous comes along.
Celebrate those special days. You already see or speak with your family during birthdays or holidays, so find other moments in time to keep communication going. Try calling your kids and grandkids on the anniversary of a special trip, or setting up a weekly phone call to hear more about a big event in their life and provide updates of your own. Also find unique holidays to get in touch. What better way to celebrate your day than spending it talking with the ones you love most?

We’ve had the “normal” stuff, of course. There was the cheese produced in a facility that had mice and rats.There was the cheese that was recalled for risk of listeria.We had undeclared wheat in chocolate cookies and boxes of cheese crackers that actually contained peanut butter crackers, a potential life-threatening problem for those who are allergic to peanuts.Then there was the undeclared soy and wheat in ice cream. An energy drink was found to contain alcohol because the alcoholic drink was mistakenly packaged in the energy drink cans. Just regular stuff, right?
But it was another one that gave me a chill: instant coffee was found to contain ground glass.
The coffee was sold in 48 states, with only Hawaii and Alaska being left out. It wasn’t just one manufacturing lot that was affected, but three. The company was notified by a customer and immediately issued the recall. I hate to think of the possible injuries that could be caused by drinking that coffee.
At the same time, this last week saw consumer products recalls for the charger to smartwatches because they can overheat and ignite, kids’ pajamas that don’t meet flammability standards, jewelry with excess levels of cadmium (which can cause health effects due to skin exposure), heated socks that can cause burns and blisters, a multitool with a blade that can cause cuts and a set of kitchen steps with a safety bar that can collapse.
Whew. It’s been busy in the recall department, and those are only from the consumer products section.

Hanna Quigley’s Journey
“There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of wielding a big axe and swinging with gravity to smash a log.”
When Hanna Quigley steps up to a block of wood, axe in hand, one phrase echoes in her mind: “Crash ‘em, bash ‘em, smash ‘em.” It’s the same mantra her grandfather yelled during backyard whiffle ball games in Honeoye Falls, and it still fuelshertodayasshecompetesagainstthenation’s top lumberjills.
At just 27 years old, Quigley has carved her place in the elite ranks of professional timbersports. In 2025, she finished 8th at the U.S. Women’s Pro Championship, capping a steady climb through the competitive field that began during her college years.
Growing up in Honeoye Falls, Quigley describes her family as her biggest source of support: parents who never missed a game or concert and a grandfather who planted the seeds of her competitive spirit.
At Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, she split her time between music and athletics. A standout on the volleyball court, she helped her team reach the state championship her junior year. In the classroom, she rose quickly in the wind ensemble, earning a perfect score at Solo Fest her senior year and serving as flute section leader sophomore through senior year.
Looking back, Quigley credits teachers and coaches with instilling the discipline and drive she carries today. She recalls wind ensemble director, Mr. Borden, as a defining influence: “He had a high expectation for us, that every person was crucial to making this happen, and ultimately that we could achieve a high-quality performance. I flourished in this environment, knowing I had the direction and support to play music I never thought possible, and I found this unwavering sense of determination to nail my part of it.”
A er high school, Quigley attended SUNY Environmental Science & Forestry in Syracuse, majoring in landscape architecture. She never imagined her career in design would intertwine with competitive lumberjill sports.
“I was not necessarily an outdoorsy person going into college,” she says. “I envisioned myself in New York City designingsomethinglikethehighline,workingdayandnight on various studio projects. While I was a very competitive person, I didn’t really consider myself very athletic. I was more focused on fashion than muscle.”

Her first semester at ESF didn’t go as planned. She missed the cut for both the volleyball team and wind ensemble and searched for an outlet when a friend unexpectedly signed her up for the lumberjack sports club. Quigley walked into practice skeptical and walked out hooked.

What began as a curious college club quickly grew into a passion. Quigley committed to training, balancing gym work with hours of practice with the saw and axe. Over the years, she built the strength, skill, and mental toughness needed to compete at the pro level.
She says, “When I entered the sport, I was in absolute awe of the women around me. ey were essentially celebrities to me, and I loved watching all the events. I would get really nervous to compete, understanding the gap between them and I. In the next few years, I worked on my mental training, nutrition, muscular growth, and equipment to hone my skills and performance. I was starting to really crush my times from prior years.”
She explains that to stay in the top few places of each event or achieve an overall, “you have to essentially PR or break a new world record to stay in the race.” Her results show how far she’s come: multiple top-three national finishes in the Women’s National Professional Championships.
Outside competition, Quigley has built a career as a landscape architect with Colliers Engineering & Design. e company supports her professionally and sponsors her athletic pursuits, and she says, “ ey’ve seen the connection between landscape architecture and lumberjacking as a true benefit to each - an appreciation for our natural resources and celebration of the relationship between people and their environment. says a lot about the company’s values and culture. I think my journey fits well into their objectives of being curious, seeking excellence, adapting and growing, and being safe and well.”
Her family has been equally all-in. What started with relatives attending local college meets has grown into a traveling cheer section. Several family members even bought an RV to follow her around the country. “I’m lucky to have the loudest cheerleaders I can ask for out there,” she says.
And then there’s the community of fellow athletes. Among them is her closest friend, fellow competitor Sam Graves, who trains with her year-round. Quigley says, “We started training together throughout the year, picking each other up through lows, pushing each other to achieve high results, sharing tips and tricks to advance in the field. Sam’s my best friend in and out of the timbersports world.”
Looking ahead, Quigley has her sights set on big goals: breaking records in events like the underhand chop and jilland-jill crosscut, championing the inclusion of new events like the one-board springboard at the national level, and ultimately claiming a first-place finish at the U.S. championships.
But beyond titles and times, she’s proudest of the personal growth the sport has given her, saying, “I’m proud of the confidence and courage I’ve gained. With my size, femininity, and knowledge, I’ve been able to find my niche in a male dominated sport and have risen to the challenge of the skill and strength required to be successful.”
When she’s not competing or designing, Quigley enjoys singing with her family band, spending time with her dog, and exploring local art and farmers markets.
To the next generation of aspiring lumberjills, her message is simple but powerful: “Our sport crosses all sizes, shapes, and abilities. Nobody looks at me and thinks, ‘Oh, she’s a professional lumberjill!’ It’s something that is possible to any woman with dedication, curiosity, and determination.”

Pets in history: Heroic dogs and cats
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Thank you for discussing war dogs and their service with our armed forces. Can you highlight some non-military canine heroes, too? -- Jim F., San Diego
DEAR JIM: Absolutely! Dogs have been performing heroic feats for as long as they’ve been our companions. But only a few have made it into the history books. Here are a few that some readers may not have heard of:
Balto and Togo: In January 1925, a diphtheria outbreak threatened the population of Nome, Alaska. To deliver lifesaving serum, teams of sled dogs relayed 500 miles across ice and snow in treacherous weather. Togo led his dog team across the longest, most dangerous part of the relay. Balto, a young and inexperienced husky, sprinted through fierce winds to reach the town in record time. Today, their journey is commemorated each year with the Iditarod sled race.
Riley: A Golden Retriever search-and-rescue (SAR) dog who became the face of SAR dogs in the wake of 9/11. At one point, Riley was sent alone in a basket over a 60foot chasm to search the wreckage on the other side. He was one of many dogs who searched the World Trade Center rubble to recover those lost. Riley died in 2010, suffering various health problems, possibly from his time at Ground Zero.
Buddy: In 1928, this German Shepherd became the first Seeing Eye dog in the United States. Born in Switzerland, she (yes, Buddy was a she) was trained by Dorothy Harrison Eustis, who ran a kennel that trained military and police dogs. Eustis matched Buddy to Frank Morris, a sight-impaired man from the U.S. Morris championed the use of Seeing Eye dogs, demonstrating Buddy’s skill at leading him across busy Manhattan streets.
Trainers train owners as well. Trainers won’t just work with pets, but also with pet owners. Obedience trainers will work with pets to teach them how to behave while also teaching owners various ways to positively reinforce the animals. This is a great way for owners to get hands-on experience and learn proper obedience training techniques, which are not always as easy to learn as owners may think.

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccerintheUnitedStatesin2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.
