When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter.

FREE HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Handrails, grab bars, nonslip stair treads, and many other devices can make homes safer for people of all ages and abilities. Outfit cabinets and closets with organizers that put frequently used items within easy reach. A sturdy step stool can reduce the risk of injury while reaching for items stored on high shelves.

Determine an indoor temperature that works best for the household. Keep the thermostat set as high as possible to maintain that comfort level. If you will be out most of the day, set the programmable thermostat at a higher temperature, and then lower the temperature about an hour before you plan to return home. This reduces the number of hours the air conditioner is running.

TREE SERVICES

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

DID YOU KNOW?

DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Monroe County Sheriff Dept.

On behalf of Seniors in Henrietta, I would like to thank the Monroe County Sheriff staff for all their help with the Sheriff’s Academy; we learned a lot and enjoyed the time spent at the different facilities. Thank you to all of you and especially to Deputy Kelly Valvassori who helped us through every class. Thank you.

Penny Saver Carrier

Thank you to the GV Penny Saver carrier who put up a new tube in Oakfield to replace one that got hit with the snowplow this winter. He was so nice and helpful for me to be able to get the Penny Saver without having to bungie cord the old one. We are lucky to have such a thoughtful carrier.

Big Shout Out!

Thank you everyone who was patient and asked if I needed help when my car broke down in Dansville recently. A big thank you to all. To the young gentleman who came back around after I was able to coast down to Agway parking lot, and helped push out of traffic lane. Kim E kept me calm while my hubby arrived, and Dansville police for their assistance.

Embarrassing display of flags in our town

It is tradition in our towns, communities, and country on Memorial Day to pay homage and appreciation for those who have sacrificed the most for our freedom and way of life. The simplest way our towns do this is by displaying our American flag on poles throughout the town’s center. It feels heartwarming to see these flags flying every year in every town as you drive through. Except one [local] town. This year, the town board and highway department decided to save some money and hang up used, old, faded, and torn flags on broken and bent poles. Every single flag was torn and faded! Some poles were bent towards the ground, some were pushed up flat against the utility pole, and some poles were placed with no flag at all. Just a pole. It is a disgrace to those who have served, those who have lost one who has served, and all of us! The town board has been notified and no response has come from them. Crickets... time for them to take care of the small things that bring us all together!

Main Street Woes

Our wonderful Main Street is full of potholes and destroyed pavement. NOT being addressed. [local road] is NOT safe due to the lack of repair to the potholes of winter. The tar filled in the holes is NOT working. The speed of the traffic on Main Street is NOT being addressed. The electric motorcycles on the streets going the wrong way or on the sidewalks or just being unsafe are NOT being addressed. The answers by the folks in charge of these issues are NOT appropriate and NOT demonstrating the care for the safety of our community.

VICTOR HIKING TRAILS: Connecting Community, Nature & History

Volunteers gather with gloves and tools in hand—not for fanfare, but to clear brush, check signage, and quietly extend paths into the woods so the community can step safely into nature. Victor Hiking Trails (VHT), a nonprofit entirelyvolunteer group, now tends a 65-mile trail system through forests, fields, neighborhoods, and historic corridors.

From old railbeds to rugged singletrack, boardwalks to quiet loops, VHT trails serve hikers, bikers, birders, and families across town. But the work goes beyond footpaths—it’s about connecting people to the land, to local history, and to each other.

A LEGACY ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Founded a er an advertisement sought volunteers in 1991, VHT emerged from humble beginnings. Originally, the town of Victor had less than two miles of recognized trail inside what is now Fishers Park, and that trail was maintained by the town’s water department. Marcia Bryan, Dave Wright, and other early members embarked on the adventure of forming the organization and creating the trail system.

Wright says, “It was funny, because we had no money but had a treasurer, and we had no trails but had a trail boss.” From that paradox, the organization grew. Volunteers sought land to use for public trails, negotiated easements and insurance, reclaimed forgotten old railbeds, and gradually wove a trail network. 34 years later, the network now spans more than 65 miles of trails.

e trails are diverse, with some wide, flat trails and some trails featuring single tracks that “dive up and down over roots, rocks, and creeks,” and everything in between. Wright says a lot has changed over the years, with more runners and mountain bikers, a bit of a younger crowd, and trail formation has changed to accommodate the diverse community needs.

Wright says, “We used to think of a trail in the sense of what a hiker would want or need, now we try to think about all the other folks who might be out there and that takes a different trail design.” It’s that inclusive mindset that led to trails like the Auburn and Seneca corridors—routes for bikers, walkers, runners, families, and mountain bike enthusiasts alike.

What started with one push mower and one trail now has a vast array of tools and volunteers to tend to the many trails. ree times each week, volunteers take to the trails “to ensure they are passable for all the users who o en take advantage of them without a thought of where the trail came from.”

BUILDING BRIDGES, TRAILS, & BELONGING

Victor Hiking Trails thrives on volunteerism, bringing together people from all over to run the system, Wright says, and “these trails have given the Town a sense of identity.” He’s really proud of the work they’ve done carving and maintaining paths but also says it’s “stitching together landowners, municipalities, and communities in collaborative stewardship.” Wright says this gives him an opportunity to create and give back to his community.

JenniferChambers,1988VictorCentralSchoolalumand now Chair of the American Hiking Society, recognizes VHT’s efforts, saying the volunteers have built trails that connect neighborhoods, restore natural areas, and open new outdoor corridors for Victor residents and visitors. She is happy VHT received National Trails Fund grants for projects including support for the construction of a bridge linking the Auburn and Lehigh Valley trails with the Domine Trail as well as another repairing a crucial

Trail a er trail, stories are layered into the land, such as the trestle crossing on the Auburn Trail, reclaimed from old rail lines, and the more rugged Seneca Trail ridges once traversed by Indigenous peoples. Dryer Road Park draws mountain bikers with its pump tracks and jumps, and local families and scout troops continue to add benches and signs, even on private land like Helen’s Way, signifying the cooperation within the community. Behind each mile, each boardwalk, each stretch of shaded woodland is a story of neighbors working side by side, landowners opening their property, and a small town that chose to define itself through shared trails. It’s stewardship without spectacle, and a legacy built by volunteers, one boardwalk plank and stone dust path at a time.

Victor Hiking Trails thoughtfully connects diverse habitats, historical corridors, and neighboring communities. Whether you’re a casual stroller, an avid cyclist, a spirited mountain biker, or a volunteer looking to give back, VHT offers trails, community, history, and nature. ey host community hikes every second Saturday, educational outings, library-led walks every Wednesday, and maintenance sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER

Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Summer has set in with its usual severity. ~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

DID YOU KNOW?

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

Swimming and outdoor activities are great ways for kids to stay physically active all summer.

Here are some easy-to-follow tips to help keep them safe and secure while having fun in the sun:

SUN SAFETY

• Avoid outdoor activities during midday when UV rays are strongest.

• Remember that UV rays can burn skin even when it’s cloudy.

• Wear a hat and sunglasses.

• Wear clothes that cover as much skin as possible.

• Use sunscreen with minimum SPF 15 on all exposed areas of the body, remembering ears, lips, tops of feet and backs of legs.

• Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours.

• Reapply sunscreen every time you get out of the water.

WATER SAFETY

• Make sure swimming pools are surrounded by secure fencing with a latched gate.

• Always supervise children when they are in or near water. Drowning can occur in even an inch or two of water.

• Make sure kids wear life jackets in and around lakes, the ocean and other natural bodies of water, even if they know how to swim.

• Make sure every passenger on a boat or personal watercraft wears a life jacket that fits properly.

• Train children to swim at an early age. Everyone should learn how to float and move through water.

• Learn CPR. Visit redcross.org for local and online class information and availability.

PLAYGROUND SAFETY

• Limit your child’s playground use to age-appropriate equipment.

• Make sure playground equipment has soft material like wood chips, sand, mulch or rubber underneath it.

• Make sure there are guardrails on playground equipment to help prevent falls.

• Look out for tripping hazards in play areas, such as tree stumps or rocks.

• Check the temperature of metal playground equipment during hot and cold weather.

LAKE LIFE & LIFE JACKETS

From Silver Lake to Conesus, dogs love a good splash but not all are strong swimmers. If you’re boating, consider a doggie life vest. It makes retrieval easier if they fall in, and yes, they come in adorable patterns too.

Wesley, Cooper, and Hope

Wesley is our 10 year old chocolate lab that loves everyone and every kind of food!

Cooper is our Boxer mix. He is a fantastic hunter, and gives the best snuggles.

Hope is our husky mix. She runs the house and loves to do cartwheels flips on the couch and run through the wooded trails.

ANSWERS TO COMMON PET FOSTERING QUESTIONS

What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires.

Why Vaccinate Your Pet

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t see the point of vaccinating a pet, especially if they’re kept inside for most of their lives. I’ve read that vaccines can cause more harm than good. It’s not natural to vaccinate. A dog or cat’s immune system should be able to handle most diseases. So why bother to vaccinate? -Natural Pet Parent

DEAR NATURAL: You couldn’t be more wrong. A pet’s immune system is not an invulnerable shield against all attacks; it’s a constantly adapting system that has to “learn” what microbes and viruses are threats and which are not. Unfortunately, some diseases cause serious illness or death before a pet’s immune system can respond to them.

Part of what vaccines do is help a pet’s immune system learn about specific threats without causing harm to your pet.Vaccines contain a safe, weakened or killed version of a pathogen; when injected, the immune system produces antibodies to specifically attack that pathogen -- and they remember that in the future.

A disease like rabies, which is always fatal, is best fought off by a vaccine, which helps your immune system mount a frontline defense if a pet is exposed to it. For example, if a vaccinated cat is attacked and bitten by a rabid fox or raccoon, a veterinarian will give the cat a booster shot and monitor the cat in quarantine for 30 to 60 days. An unvaccinated cat who is attacked by a rabid animal might be euthanized immediately, or quarantined for up to 4 months.

Because there is no such thing as 100% prevention fro exposure to various diseases, even your indoor pets need to have their core vaccinations.

See if you can count the total amount of blueberries there are to pick from!

_ A single blueberry bushcan produce as many as 6,000 blueberries per year.

_ There are two types of blueberries: highbush and lowbush. Highbush blueberries are the type you commonly find at grocery stores and farmers markets. Lowbush blueberries are smaller, sweeter blueberries often used for processing into juices, jams, blueberry mu n mixes, and so on.

Immunity to Rubella Does Not Equal Immunity to Measles &body mind

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a recent column of yours in which you said that everyone my age can assume we’ve had measles. I remember having measles in the second grade but have a vague memory of my parents calling it German measles, which I believe is rubella.

If a person has had either, do they have immunity to both types of measles? -- S.F.

ANSWER: If you were born before 1957, you are likely but not 100% sure to be immune to measles (sometimes called red measles) and mumps. However, rubella (German measles) is a different disease, and immunity to one does not ensure immunity to the other.

The biggest health concern with rubella is when a woman of childbearing age contracts it as the potential damage to her developing fetus can be severe. So, every woman who could get pregnant is tested for immunity at the earliest opportunity. All health care workers should have documented immunity to measles, mumps and rubella.

The United States is in the middle of a large measles outbreaknow, andthoselivinginanareawithtransmission should be sure that they are immune to measles. This can be done by checking blood antibody levels or giving an extra dose to those who have already been immunized (or two doses to those who have never been immunized).

At the time that I write this, there is no rubella outbreak in the U.S., but if there is, the advice will be similar to demonstrating immunity to rubella as it is for measles.

KIDS AND SLEEP

School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

SUMMER FUN FOR ACTIVE SENIORS

Take a fishing charter. Casting a rod from a dock or pier is perfectly acceptable, but securing a spot on a fishing charter is a great way to spend hours out on the water enjoying the scenery and the sport of fishing. Plus, there’s the added benefit of enjoying the fruits of your labors by cooking the day’s catch for dinner once you arrive home.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The dangers of bagged salad greens

Sometimes we just want to take the easy path and quickly grab a few things for dinner. Bagged salad greens are often on our list -- but it’s the last place we should be taking a shortcut in meal prep.

Between contaminated water in the fields and many people involved in the processing, handling and storage, food safety experts are pointing to bagged salads as the item near the top of the list for safety concerns and outbreaks of E. coli. And that makes it a real risk for seniors or anyone with a compromised immune system.

How to avoid the dangers of E. coli? Buy whole head lettuce instead of bagged and throw away the outer leaves. Rinse the lettuce under running cold water and dry it with paper towels. Besides the force of the water during rinsing, the drying with paper towels can also help remove the E. coli contamination. Do the same with other leafy greens such as spinach.

However, if you do want to buy packaged salad greens, the dilemma comes when the package claims that they have been pre-washed. “Triple washed! Ready to eat!” the package will proclaim. The question is: Should you believe it? Or should you go ahead and wash it? The experts, including the FDA and USDA, say not to wash it. The reason, they say, is that we at home are more likely to contaminate the greens ourselves with a dirty sink.

People on blogs across the internet are insulted, however, being told they would contaminate food in their own kitchens. They intend to wash all produce, even if the package says it’s not needed and even if it’s organic from a farmer’s market.

It’s difficult to know what to believe, but one thing is a fact: Seniors who develop an E. coli infection can become severely ill. Take care.
