DID YOU KNOW?

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME

Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxingsanctuary.

There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room.Insulatingproperlywillallow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort.

Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help controlfirebylimitingitsspread.

Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity andpropagationofnoise.

Pick Like a Pro is Apple Season

Apple picking is a favorite fall tradition across Western New York, and a little planning can help you make the most of your visit. Be sure to pick apples the right way: instead of pulling straight down, gently twist or roll the apple upward. Ripe apples will come off easily with the stem intact, which helps them stay fresh longer. When inspecting apples, look for ones that are firm and brightly colored, and leave behind any with bruises or insect damage.

Also, don’t overload your bags or baskets. Apples bruise easily, and stacking too many on top of each other can lead to crushed fruit that spoils quickly. Only pick what you know you’ll use. With a little care and attention, you’ll go home with a beautiful haul that’s perfect for pies, crisps, or snacking fresh off the tree.

TYPES OF AERATORS

Slicing aerator: According to Pennington, slicing aerators employ rotating blades that slice through thatch and down into the soil. These aerators leave the soil in the ground.

Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

Arbs

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH

Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.

Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

Different types of treatment are available for patients with breast cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.

The little smalltown things really matter! Last week, Livonia Postmaster, Rebecca Kemp, saved a local man, Howard J.’s life. Howard went to the post office daily to pick up his mail, and last week, when Rebecca noticed Howard had not picked up his mail for a few days, she took it upon herself to stop over to his house in the village. When she got there, the door was open and she could see him on the floor, not moving. She quickly called 911 and emergency personnel found him severely dehydrated and barely cognizant. Evidently, Howard took a nasty fall and since he lived alone and did not have his phone nearby to call for help, he lay there for a few days until Rebecca came to check on him. Knowing he had no family, she even took time off the next day to visit him in the hospital. Rebecca without a doubt saved Howard’s life and is clearly watching out for the community! Thank you!

Everyone, check on your neighbors. Let’s all watch out for each other!

Great People

I had two flat tires in Brockport today. I am so very grateful to the couple who stopped to help while on their walk, and a HUGE thank you to the police officer who helped me while I waited for the tow truck, then the service center for their understanding and help during my situation! It is very much appreciated!

I made a mistake

After a particularly stressful trip to [local town] one evening, when everything was just going wrong, I made a mistake. At the main traffic light, I saw the car next to me pull forward and assumed the light changed and I started to drive. I realized my mistake with the first car’s horn. At that point, I had no recourse but to remain in the intersection until I was free to move. However, a man in a truck was unforgiving and remained in front of me, leaning on his horn, screaming/cussing at me and waving his arms. I don’t know what he expected me to do. Until he moved, I was stuck. I felt stupid, embarrassed, and anxious. I wish people would stop being so angry and have a little consideration for mistakes. I’ve never claimed to be perfect and never met someone who was.

Kennel in Village?

When we moved here 18 years ago, we had no idea the village would become a kennel. There are now at least ten dogs on one street. Only one of the owners does the right thing. They are well controlled. The rest of the owners let their dogs bark incessantly, non-stop. If you are going to have dogs that is fine, but they need to be trained and controlled. To force neighbors to listen to them constantly bark is wrong on many levels.

Man With Pacemaker Must Be Careful Around Induction Stovetops

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has a pacemaker. We have an induction stove, and his cardiologist was uncertain if it was safe for him to use it. So, he does not cook on the stovetop and stays clear of it when I am cooking.

Is it safe for him to use at least the back burners? When I am out of town or just not home, he is afraid to use the cooktop. I feel like at least the back burners should be at a sufficient distance to be safe. Do you know if it would be safe for him to use? He is 5 feet, 5 inches tall. Thank you. -- V.S.

ANSWER: Induction cooking stoves use powerful electromagnets to create a magnetic field. Inside the metal of your cookware, this creates electronic currents, which dissipate heat through electric resistance. However, this powerful magnetic field can also “tell” your pacemaker to turn itself off or change its mode of activity. This is why it’s important to avoid strong magnetic fields when one has a pacemaker.

For an induction stovetop, the recommendation is to stay 60 centimeters (2 feet) away from the device while it’s turned on.This doesn’t mean that he can’t use it at all, just that he shouldn’t be touching the pot continuously and should be using the back burners, which will likely keep him the requisite distance away.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My oncologist tries to type out his own notes from my office visit, but I think that he copies and pastes info from old notes. My history with him is very long and detailed (MRIs, CT scans, lab results, etc.). In addition, notes from all my hospital stays for chemo are there.

After my last office visit, he scheduled me for an MRI but made no mention of any change in medication. I read his notes on the app and noticed there was an order for a new medication that was sent over to my pharmacy. It was for procarbazine, which I took as part of my chemotherapy in early 2024.

It was a mistake, but it was very upsetting. I had to make several phone calls to get it straightened out. So, if people have access to online notes, please make sure that you are looking at the most recent information. -- M.D.

A.ANSWER: Having the ability to read your physician’s notes is, in my opinion, a very good thing. Correcting mistakes is probably the most important reason why. One study found that 25% of doctors picked up an important mistake in their record based on patient feedback.

Procarbazine, by the way, is an extremely powerful chemotherapy drug and would never have been dispensed by the pharmacy without confirmation from your doctor. In the hospital, there are multiple layers of protection to make sure that the right person gets the right dose of the right medicine. It wouldn’t be given out lightly.

Reading your doctor’s note hopefully gives a person some insight into a doctor’s thought process and may help people understand why their doctor made the recommendations that they did. Occasionally I have people who ask to change their medical records. This isn’t allowed, but a note can be made about what the mistake was so that the information can be corrected.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS

Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

Puppy training 103: Regression

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a beautiful black Lab. “Sadie” was 10 weeks old, well socialized to people and other dogs by the shelter staff, and started training beautifully. Now she is 7 months old, and some days it seems like she has forgotten all of her behavioral training. She won’t respond to commands, she pulls the leash and she jumps on people at the door. Why is she suddenly such a handful? -- Barry G. in Bellingham, Washington

DEAR BARRY: Congratulations! Your puppy is reaching the “rebellious teenager” phase of growth. This is a totally normal (if irritating) phase of a healthy, happy young dog,and it starts at about 7 to 10 months of age.

Much like human teenagers, puppies at this phase develop fun traits like selective hearing (they won’t always listen or respond when called), challenging authority and testing boundaries. Part of what’s happening is hormonal changes and growing pains, along with more familiarity with her environment and the routine you’ve set. These are important stages in Sadie’s development, so don’t get discouraged. You haven’t failed at training her.

During a regression (which can also happen in adult dogs), it’s important to focus on the basics of behavior training and maintain the routine you’ve established. If you walk Sadie each morning and practice “sit,” “lay down,” “heel” and “come” (recall from the end of the leash), don’t change.

It’s also important to manage your frustration. That can be hard when an adolescent dog is tangling the leash around your ankles! Breathe deeply, remind yourself that this, too, shall pass, and keep the leash short.

Go for the GOAT!

Leaves of three, let it be. You’ve heard that, right? Me, too, but I never paid much attention until I started weeding my yard and discovered poison ivy. Or rather, it discovered me. Turns out, even the tiniest amount of urushiol, the oil poison ivy produces, can cause an allergic reaction.

So how to get rid of it? A quick online search reveals several options: hand pull it, roots and all, without touching its leaves, stems, roots, or berries; douse it with boiling water, though it may not destroy its roots, and even a er being scalded, it can still cause a rash; smother it to block oxygen and light, though it’s well adapted to shade; or apply chemical weed killer, though you may kill far more than just poison ivy. When all else fails given its incredibly resilient nature, hire a professional, like Mama Mae. Mama Mae is a large alpine goat. Rescued from slaughter a er she developed mastitis and was no longer useful to her original farm’s breeding program, she’s now a member of Kaizen Ridge Farm’s all-female goatscaping crew, most recently helping take care of two large scale land clearing projects along Keuka Lake. She’s one of the farm’s around 75 rescued goats, and they stay busy clearing poison ivy and other unwanted or invasive vegetation around our area.

ough the term might be new, goatscaping has a long history going back centuries. Goats were among the first domesticated animals as people discovered their ability to clear large areas early on. Today,inCalifornia, goatsreducewildfiredangerby eating dry brush, while in New Mexico, they clear vegetation from arroyos to keep the water flowing. In Washington, DC, goats eat vines choking out trees in the historic Congressional Cemetery. In Toronto, they maintain urban meadows by eating highly invasive, non-native plants like Common Buckthorn, Autumn Olive, and Garlic Mustard, and in Seattle, goats have long been employed to clear steep hillsides. ese are just a few examples of large-scale goatscaping in action.

FILOKI RESTS IN THE BARN AFTER A BIG JOB

e benefits are many. Goat crews clear land without the use of herbicides or pesticides, are o en less expensive than human crews, and can easily access terrain humans and heavy machinery cannot. ey aren’t noisy like mowers and require no gas, aside from whatever’s required to bring them onsite. And unlike heavy machinery that compacts soil, goats aerate the ground as they go and this, combined with the fertilizer they leave behind, enriches the land they work.

Here in western New York, both Rochester Gas & Electric and the NY Power Authority employ Kaizen’s crews to clear utility easements and manage embankments in areas that are hard to reach and along ecologically sensitive waterways, but Kaizen’s crews are also available for smaller jobs, like clearing poison ivy in our backyards.

Acreforacre, suburbanareasaccountforhigherpesticide use than rural areas as we homeowners apply chemicals more heavily and more o en in our yards and gardens. Many commercial weed killers contain glyphosate, a board spectrum, non-selective herbicide that kills a wide variety of plants. It also enters the soil and water that feeds everything from the birds and butterflies we love to see to all of us, our kids, and our pets.

Goats offer a chemical-free alternative. When they eat a plant’s leaves, they stop it from photosynthesizing, stunting its growth and making it much easier to manage.

And unlike mowing and weed whacking, which can scatter seeds to make a bad problem worse, late season goatscaping can keep plants from going to seed and spreading. Better yet, any seeds goats eat are digested in their four stomachs, leaving them unviable. So, how does it work? Most projects start the same way, with an initial assessment to determine how large an area needs to be cleared, how many goats are required, and how long it will take. Temporary fencing is then set up to protect off-limits areas and the goats get to work. ough goatscaping may take a bit longer than mowers and other machines, they get the job done and leave the area naturally fertilized and chemical-free.

If your property, whether urban, rural, or suburban, large or small, needs clearing, before opting for chemical weed killers, consider Mama Mae and her crew. In the Rochester area, reach out to Kaizen Ridge Farm in Victor, and in the Buffalo area, contact Let’s Goat Buffalo in Orchard Park. Both employ rescued goats, many once bound for slaughter, and both service properties big and small. Choose goats over glyphosate for a huge win-win, not just for Mama Mae and her rescued goat crew but for our soil and water and the entire food web it supports!

Just after the death of the flowers, And before they are buried in snow,

There comes a festival season, When nature is all aglow— Aglow with a mystical spendour

That rivals the brightness of spring,

Aglow with a beauty more tender Than aught which fair summer could bring....

~Emeline B. Smith, “Indian Summer”

HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER

Offer practical support. Cancer affects the body in a number of ways. Energy levels may wane and certain symptoms may arise. Side effects from treatments also can make it difficult to continue with daily tasks. So an offer to help with tasks associated with daily living, such as cooking meals, gardening, washing clothes, or cleaning up around the house, can be practical and much appreciated. Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable. This may be, “Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”

e Maple

Out back, in the yard, stood a maple tree.

Each spring her buds gave us hope of life returning; Her branches were perfect for fledging baby bluebirds. Even a bald eagle once sat in her hair!

Each summer her graceful leaves gave us shade and precious oxygen and that lovely shushing sound. She was even trusted to hold our children in her arms swinging merrily.

Each autumn she became a glorious bouquet of color offered up to God. She even fed the woodpeckers as she was dying.

Tonight, with the snow swirling outside, she warms our home in a final blessing.

How good God made the maple! I shall miss her.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Robotic pets

Some of us have gotten to the age where we wonder if adopting a pet would be the right thing to do, even though we know that having a pet would help with feelings of loneliness. Or maybe we have a friend or relative with Alzheimer’s or who is in long-term care and needs some company or stress reduction but can’t have a pet.

With those very things in mind, a company has created animatronic robot cats -- Joy For All Companion Pets for Seniors by Ageless Innovation.

While mostly marketed to seniors in long-term care facilities, there’s no reason you can’t have one at home!

Look for them on Amazon.com (Joy For All Companion Cats) to get all the details. The cats are the size of adult cats and come in three colors: black and white tuxedo, silver and white, and orange tabby.

They run on four C batteries and there are three settings: on, mute and off. The videos on the Amazon page show just what these robotic kitties do. They roll on their back, open and close their eyes, move their limbs, turn their head and even meow and purr when petted. And I can verify: When I played one of the cat videos and the robotic cat meowed, my own cat woke up from a nap and reacted to it!

These cats are expensive, ranging from $125 to $179, depending whether you find one on sale. They’re also marketed to children, perhaps to get them used to a pet before getting a real one, but they’re not toys.

Not a cat person? Rather have a puppy? You’re not being left out. The Joy For All Companion Pet Golden Pup feels like a puppy, moves, barks, wags his tail and has a heartbeat. It even comes with a bandanna.

* There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams.

She was always busy, although her lifestyle was simple: canning food and preserves, tending her gardens, singing and feeding the birds. Some of Fran’s significant accomplishments include her graduation from Radford University and she completed her Masters in Education from SUNY Geneseo.

Fran was a member of the Rochester reshold Choir. She also wrote songs that have been sung in reshold Choirs all over the world. For many years, she was the Sunday School coordinator fot the Word of Life Church in Rochester, New York. She was a volunteer at the Episcopal SeniorLife Communities in Rochester, playing her guitar and singing with the precious folks.

Fran’s presence will be sorely missed. We let go of a remarkable woman, a loving mother, a doting grandmother, and a kind soul. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the love, joy, and kindness that were the essence of Fran’s being.

(Hamilton, Montana) Jeff passed away at age 51, March 23, 2025 in Hamilton, Montana.

Jeff was a 1992 graduate of Victor High School and graduate of FLCC Conservation Program. He had acquired many skills in life including journeyman Masonry and Tile setter, Forestry conservation, guitar player, wood carver, writer, wilderness rescue, improv performer and evangelist. Jeff could master anything he put his mind to.

He was blessed to grow up in a time before technology, and spent most of every hour outdoors with his friends and brothers hiking, trailblazing and camping in and around Farmington, and our beautiful Finger Lakes.

Jeff struggled with health issues for much of his life. Many years ago, he became a devout Christian and grew in his faith over years. He consistently prayed for healing. God did heal him by taking him Home and Jeff is now whole, healed and living in glory at Jesus’ side.

He is survived by his father, Andrew Asproulis; his mother, Joanne Nemitz; his brothers, Greg and Mike; many cousins and aunts and uncles, and the very best lifelong friends that few have. Jeff was a natural evangelist, and absolutely believed in the truth of the Bible and spoke openly of his faith to spread the message of salvation, his commitment to Christ, his endurance through suffering, and his assurance of a spiritual reward because he faithfully served God’s purpose to the end of his life.

Jeff “fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7.

Please join us at Victor Community Church, 7500 Rt 251, Victor, NY on October 24th at 3pm for a casual memorial gathering and meal.

The two major types are the TWO-toed and THREE-toed sloths.

Their closest relatives are anteaters and armadillos.

Sloths spend their lives in the TROPICAL RAIN FORESTS

They munch on leaves and twigs.

Sloths can swim three times faster than they can walk on land.

Their ability to slow their heart rates to one-third its normal rate, gives them the ability to hold their breath for a whopping 40 minutes underwater.

Sloths are NOT pets.

They can live anywhere between 10 and 30 years!

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
