Breakfast Pizza
Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

HOW
TO
AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE
For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.
The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.
A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.
The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
Decreasing the length of time a woman’s breast tissue is exposed to estrogen may help prevent breast cancer. Exposure to estrogen is reduced in the following ways:
• Early pregnancy: Estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy. Women who have a full-term pregnancy before age 20 have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have not had children or who give birth to their first child after age 35.
• Breast-feeding: Estrogen levels may remain lower while a woman is breast-feeding. Women who breastfed have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have had children but did not breastfeed.

Be willing to accept help. It’s easy for cancer patients to feel like they’re suddenly seen as charity cases upon sharing their diagnosis with an employer and their colleagues. But offers to help come from a good place, and patients would likely offer to help if the shoe was on the other foot and a colleague revealed a cancer diagnosis. It’s alright to tell people willing to help that you’ll let them know if you need anything if and when a difficult situation arises. In the meantime, thank them for their kindness and prepare to lighten your professional load as treatment begins.
CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH
Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.
Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Offer practical support. Cancer affects the body in a number of ways. Energy levels may wane and certain symptoms may arise. Side effects from treatments also can make it difficult to continue with daily tasks. So an offer to help with tasks associated with daily living, such as cooking meals, gardening, washing clothes, or cleaning up around the house, can be practical and much appreciated.Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable. This may be,“Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”

Songs for Stills: A Community Remembers Jonathan, Who Led With Love
BY SUZIE WELLS
On a late summer morning, devastating news echoed through the Honeoye Falls and Lima communities: beloved Jonathan Stills, just 40 years old, had died in a car accident. For many, the loss felt impossible to process. Surveying my community for thoughts on Stills produces a resounding refrain: Jon was an amazing, selfless human who led by example in every area of his life, and we should all strive to follow his example in our lives.
Stills was everywhere. He drove HF-L children to school as the “singing bus driver,” carried neighbors in ambulances, battled fires beside friends, spun music at weddings, and in recent years, even helped guide local government as a Lima Village Trustee. Most of all, he was a husband, a father, a brother, and a friend who led every day with love.
A LIFE WOVEN INTO COMMUNITY
Stills was born and raised in Lima, graduating from HoneoyeFalls–LimaHighSchoolin2003,andhedidn’t stray far. He spent a decade driving school buses, his voice filling the rides of children who still remember his songs. He volunteered for the Lima Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Honeoye Falls Fire Department. With magnetic energy, he co-owned Premier Party Entertainment and Premier Party Rentals, lending joy and laughter to countless celebrations. But perhaps his deepest mark was le through Love Leads Us, the nonprofit he founded in 2021 whose mission is to fight racism through lovebased initiatives.
Rick Milne, Honeoye Falls mayor, coached Stills in youth sports and called him a friend as an adult, staying connected to talk about anything and everything. Milne says, “Anyone who knew Jon was lucky. Jon truly cared about the relationships that formed with him, and you knew you had a dear friend in him. So, for me and for so much of the community, this was a huge loss.”
AllisonFowler, aclosefamilyfriendandfellowmusician says people o en talk about Jon’s music, which she admits was incredible, but “the thing that impressed me most was the way he could bring people together and make them feel valued as humans. He excelled at having discussions about hard topics in a way that honored others’ opinions but did not compromise his own values. He was humble, generous, and just a delight to be around.”
For Fowler, favorite memories of Stills include silly “weird hug” challenges with her husband (she explains: “Jon was a hugger and Shaun wasn’t, so they compromised and had “weird hug” challenges where they’d try to make a more hilarious and bizarre hug whenever they saw each other. e results were entertaining for all!”). Deep conversations about life and family, spontaneous bursts of song, excited chatter about ideas for the future, that’s what life was like with Stills, Fowler says.
“Jonathan lived a life of service and love, and it brings me comfort to see his legacy reflected in the way so many of you have cared for us.”

“Jonathan’s legacy of love for others will live on in all of us in some way if we steward its growth and development,” she says, adding, “If everyone who knew him thought of each action as a choice to love more perfectly and deeply or show up with bitterness and choose love, the world would be much more beautiful. Taking up Jonathan’s passion for ending racism would be the perfect place to start living his legacy in our community. at starts with everyone taking an interest in learning, growing, taking responsibility for themselves, and listening to others with the intent to understand.”
For Jonathan’s wife, Bethany, the weeks since her husband’s passing were filled with heartbreak and gratitude. “Every message, every gi , and every act of kindness has been a lifeline in these heartbreaking days,” she writes. “Jonathan lived a life of service and love, and it brings me comfort to see his legacy reflected in the way so many of you have cared for us.”

CARRYING FORWARD HIS DREAM
Jonathan and Bethany had long dreamed of buying a home in the Honeoye Falls-Lima school district to raise their three children, Robby, Laelynn, and Luna. But like many small business owners, every dollar Stills earned was poured back into his developing business, and the home fund waited.
Milne, wanting to honor that dream and provide a tangible focus, helped organize Songs for Stills, a benefit concert this Sunday, October 12, from 2-6 p.m. at the gazebo in Harry Allen Park. First, HF-L’s own Brandon Mustardo and his wife, Michelle (“Michi”), will perform as a duo, and then from 4-6 p.m., Uptown Groove, a band Stills o en sang with, will take the stage. Michi says they are all honored to be part of this benefit and “hopefully, we can spread a little love and happiness to honor [Jon’s] life’s mission.” If weather interferes, the rain date is October 15th.
ere will be food trucks, raffles, and gi baskets, with 100% of proceeds going to Bethany and the family’s home fund. Milne says, “ is is a community event, not a Honeoye Falls or Lima event. It’s the community who loves Jon and Bethany. And we have a great group of volunteers helping make this event happen.”
is Sunday, as neighbors gather at Harry Allen Park, music will rise up in Stills’ honor. Friends, family, and strangers alike will sing, laugh, and give, not only to support the Stills family, but to carry forward the legacy of a man who believed that love could truly transform a community.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER
Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength.
Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

Express Yourself!
There was a vent a few weeks ago about people not wearing ‘enough clothing’ in public to which I was appalled, because I’ve never seen a vent about all the men mowing their lawns shirtless in our community. The right to express ourselves through creative clothing is something I love to see on others and would never judge, especially with the temperatures summer brings us. A few days later, as I was shopping, I happened to notice an elderly lady with a thin shirt and black bra underneath, to which I got a burst of joy that even the older generations like to dress spicy sometimes!
Book Boxes
Over the years I’ve lost many in my book club. We would exchange books between the group. We would gather then from yard sales, book sales, splurge on a few of our favorite authors. Now it’s just two of us. So, finding these book boxes is a great joy. I now put my done books in there and slip in a few children’s books from my collection.
My wife and I moved out here to this local county for the beautiful landscapes, rolling hills, peace, gratitude, and quiet 16 years ago. Now, before our eyes are this hideous slew of solar farms popping up everywhere. The problem is they did a very bad job of hiding them from the street views. Some solar farms planted trees which are half dead and not replaced. When these boards approve of the use, why don’t they follow through with covering these ugly solar farms and make the owners or companies maintain these 20-year use garbage and require they replant the trees and plant plenty? This county is getting ruined. And speaking environmentally, where are the panels to go after their 20-year use? SAY NO TO SOLAR FARMS. I see this every day and they are building so many more. Just great. www.featuredmedia.com
Medical Office’s Voicemail
I’m sure thousands of your readers have experienced the following when calling their doctors’ offices. If it wasn’t so annoying, it would be comical when I hear these on their voicemail messages: 1. “Your call will be answered in the order it was received” (how else would it be answered?) 2. “This call is being recorded for quality and training purposes” (really? I wonder if this really occurs?) 3. “We are experiencing a higher volume of calls than usual” (I called back at 3am and got the same message, so forgive my skepticism). Why can’t a real, live person answer patients’ calls?

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packagesquotedtobuildersremainedhigh.Thatmeansrealestateinvestorswhoinvest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
"You can reuse the envelopes that come in junk mail and solicitations. I use them to keep coupons together for when I go to the store, and magazine clippings that I save for my daughter." -M.W. in Alabama
Essentially, autumn is the quiet completion of spring and summer. Spring was all eagerness and beginnings, summer was growth and flowering. Autumn is the achievement summarized, the harvested grain, the ripened apple, the grape in the wine press. Autumn is the bright leaf in the woodland, the opened husk on the bittersweet berry, the fruit of asters at the roadside.

Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spiceisalsoakeyingredientwhen preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS
Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

Readers sound off on dog peeing in a neighbor’s yard
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Unbelievable that someone wouldn’t take responsibility for keeping their dog off the neighbor’s property! I just wanted to thank you for your response to the question. -LEOnard H.
DEAR PAWS: Although you were correct that any dog should not go on a neighbor’s lawn, you also may have hurt the chances for shelter dogs to get homes. We have had dogs for years, and they did their business in our yard, but we did not have a yard full of awful bare spots surrounded by yellow dying grass. What you stated could, sadly, make a family decide not to adopt a dog. -- Nancy D., via email
DEAR NANCY: While I’m not sure why being a responsible neighbor would preclude a family from adopting a dog, I’m happy that you agree with me about the bigger problem: trespassing into a neighbor’s yard to pee in it.
DEAR PAWS: We have a 7-year-old female Great Pyrenees dog and about 3 acres of lawn. I can tell exactly where our dog has peed, because the 8- to 10-inch area of grass is much greener and about 2 inches taller than the adjacent grass. She also goes on our various neighbors’ lawns near the edge of the street, and I’ve never noticed any yellowing or dead grass areas. So, what gives? Is our dog unique or is it the breed, or maybe what she eats? All the best. -- Gary S.
DEAR GARY: Some strains of grass are more resistant to the nitrogen in dog urine (Kentucky bluegrass, for one), but no grass is completely tolerant of pee. Again, the bigger problem is that a pet owner felt it was just fine to let their pet walk onto their neighbor’s lawn to “fertilize” it.

Chikungunya Disease Leaves Woman in Immense Pain for Years
Q. A.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who lives in Paraguay and had been diagnosed with chikungunya. It has been extremely painful for her for several years. Her doctor prescribed 90 mg of etoricoxib daily and a shot of duodecadron once a month.
I’ve never heard of chikungunya, and the medical care she is getting seems sketchy. I wish there was a solution for her immense pain. Do you have any knowledge of this virus and/or the medication for it? Are you aware of any new or trial drugs that might be worth trying? -- J.
ANSWER: Chikungunya may not sound like a real medical condition, but it is a viral disease that was first found in West Africa. It has since spread to the Caribbean and the Americas with transmission occurring in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and a few cases in Florida.
It is spread mainly through mosquitoes. The word “chikungunya” is from an African language and roughly translates to “stooped walk” due to the joint pain caused by the disease. In addition to joint pain, people with chikungunya usually have a fever and a skin rash. Headache and even meningitis may occur. However, joint pain is the most common long-term complication.
While most people will clear their joint symptoms within six months, symptoms can go on for years in some people. Your friend is receiving a COX-2 inhibitor (etoricoxib), which has the potential for heart damage, so it is not approved in the United States.
She is also on a chronic steroid, dexamethasone, which is used in North America but may not be the best long-term treatment as it has numerous long-term side effects. In North America, people with chronic joint pain from chikungunya are treated similarly to those with rheumatoid arthritis. This often includes methotrexate or another disease-modifying antirheumatic drug. I urge your friend to see a rheumatologist.
Q.
DEAR DR. ROACH: In your column, I frequently read letters from people who have to get up during the night to urinate. My husband had this problem and got up hourly. We assumed it was as a prostate issue.
After prostate surgery, he had a catheter for a few days, and we found that he was producing almost two liters of urine at night. The urologist immediately ordered a sleep study to determine if sleep apnea was present.
He tested positive, was started on a CPAP machine, and only needed to get up once on the very first night. It changed his life. -- D.S.
A.ANSWER: I thank D.S. for writing. Obstructive sleep apnea is a well-known cause for urinating at night, but we often forget to think about it. A really useful tool for sleep apnea, the STOPBang questionnaire, doesn’t include excessive urinating at night, but your letter is a good reminder that we should consider this diagnosis in people who are at risk for sleep apnea.
The risk factors in the STOP-Bang questionnaire are Snoring; Tired enough to fall asleep easily during the day; Observed stopped breathing or gasping for breath during the night; high blood Pressure; a Body mass index over 35; an Age older than 50; a Neck size larger than 16 inches (40 cenitmeters); and the Gender of male.
A person who answers positively to three or more of these risk factors should at least prompt a consideration of whether sleep apnea is likely enough to test the person for it.
Physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer
Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year. ough the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise benefits women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer.
e ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. ough the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer.
Body
weight and breast cancer
e National Cancer Institute reports that being obese a er menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.

Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. e ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years. None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.
Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk?
e human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise.
Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.

A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breastandnearbylymphnodestoother parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer.

Don’t touch the thermostat
By the time you read this, many of us in cold-weather areas will be listening for (and dreading) the click sound that heralds the arrival of warm air through the furnace vents. The dread comes in when we mentally calculate just how much it’s costing us to stay warm.
The temptation, always, is to set the thermostat at a lower temperature and cut costs. However, for seniors this can be dangerous. We’re no longer physically equipped to handle cold and are vulnerable to hypothermia if the temperature is too low. If you already have a preexisting condition, your risks are even higher. The National Institute on Aging suggests that we don’t set our indoor temperature to lower than 68-70 degrees.
And the math doesn’t really support lowering the temperature too much.
Rule of thumb is that for every degree you lower the temperature, you can save 1-3% on your costs. If your monthly bill is $100, that means you can potentially save $1-$3 on your costs. If you’re gone for the day, they say that if you lower your thermostat by 7-10 degrees for an eight-hour day, you can save 10% on your bill. But when you come home it’s going to be very cold inside and take hours to warm up to your normal temperature, with the furnace running every minute.

Investing in the clear plastic film that covers windows on the inside can block a lot of cold air that blows in through even the most modern windows. Experts say this can save 10-30% on your heating bill. Based on my experiences, I believe this.
Open the curtains on the sunny side of the house to let the sun in during the day. Have an annual inspection of your furnace to keep it running well.
And put on an insulated vest. You’ll be surprised how much warmer you’ll feel!

WHAT IS A TRUST?
A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust,a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust.
There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY
Play by the rules. Your employer may have a plan in place for how the company prefers resignations to be handled. The standard two- to threeweek’s notice is a guideline. Visit with human resources if you need more information, such as whether or not a resignation letter or other documentation is required.
RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.
