Air travel: Transportation abroad undoubtedly will be one of the largest expenses travelers incur. Check prices from multiple airports in your area for the best rates, even if it means having to drive a bit further. If you have only one local airport, book a separate flight to a travel hub, such as Atlanta or New York, so you can comparison shop more affordable flights to your final destination.
Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills.
A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.
Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney.
Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colors and styles for a fraction of the cost. Plus, many are sold at home improvement retailers and even at
or online for reasonable prices. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.
Lately, we have come upon highway workers resurfacing the roadways. Please watch for and obey the flag person that is directing traffic. Why do some think they should drive around them, ignore stop signs, beep the horn, swear or even give them the finger? They are only doing their job in keeping the roads in good and safe condition for all of us. To the many highway workers in and around the area, a BIG THANK YOU for standing out there or driving a dump truck in this recent heat wave we have had. You are appreciated by many of us!
Hidden treasures that lie within, long forgotten, buried deep inside behind a wall where no one has ever been. We take for granted things in this life. We put nothing in perspective, just leave it to strife! I write this rave for Hocus-Focus’ artist, Henry Boltinoff, for waking a talent that was long ago lost... drawing! Mr. Boltinoff is very talented in bringing to life his art and others’ “hidden inspiration” and love of drawing. HocusFocus has saved my life in so many ways; words cannot express my gratitude and attitude for his art. The Penny Saver is very blessed to have him as an artist and contributor to the many lives he has touched... especially mine. I enjoy the Penny Saver that much more knowing Hocus-Focus is patiently awaiting an exit from my mailbox to my kitchen table top with a sketch pad, art supplies, and determination to draw the characters of Mr. Henry Boltinoff’s Hocus-Focus. Thank you for keeping me alive and well fed with drawing.
To everyone who uses [local road in local town] the speed limit is 30mph inside the village limits. Show some respect for our children, pets, and adults by driving the posted speed limit. This is our neighborhood, not a racetrack.
The disgusting behavior of phone users has really gotten out of hand. I attended an outdoor concert, and people could not just sit and listen. They had to hold their phones up to record portions of it, blocking the line of sight for everyone behind them. Some in the front row even stood up to get a wide sweeping view, and then they had to share it with their partner while still standing. I finally had to move to the open area in the rear where no one was around me so I could get an uninterrupted view.
As much as we know that everyone loves to blare their music while driving on these lovely summer days (keyword: DAYS), we do not need to hear ‘your’ loud car stereo system past 10pm. Some of us prefer to not be woken up to our homes shaking or being shaken out of bed because you decide that the entire neighborhood needs to hear your music.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-four percent of those injuries were burns, 30 percent involved the hands and fingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes. The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks. And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers, which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.
Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Here’s one more reason to keep checking back on the AARP website: the big selection of fitness offerings in the healthy living section. There are the articles, of course: complete guide to pickleball, link between sugar and cancer, ways to get an energy boost and others. But it’s the workout videos that have caught my eye.
The site (aarp.org) has videos on cardio, walking, balance, stretching, core exercises and more. The knees get a lot of much-needed attention with videos on improving knee mobility and building stronger knees. Strength training has videos on building both the upper and lower body muscles.
What I appreciated in these videos is that many of them can be done while seated or holding a chair for balance, if necessary, and none require expensive equipment. A couple of light hand weights (or even soup cans), maybe a mat for the floor, and that’s all you need.
The yoga section is comprehensive, with videos aimed at beginners who are ages 50 and 60 plus a video for those who are already 70.
But I think my favorite area is the 10-minute section for when I just don’t have time for a full workout. If you can’t make your way around the AARP site to get to the videos, do a search for “10-minute workout” to find a long list of short videos done by experts. Or search for “Denise Austin” and you’ll find dozens of exercise videos she’s created for seniors.
If you’re only going to look at one exercise article, make it “10 Exercises to Do Today for a Healthier, Happier Tomorrow.” These exercises are geared to helping us continue doing the daily things we need to accomplish: Strengthen your grocery-carrying muscles, keep your shoulder muscles limber and strong so you can put away dishes and (a favorite of many) strengthen your grip so you can open jars. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.
Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth.

IRENE SESNIE
Whether bounding over barriers in the steeplechase or charging through the final stretch at Mendon Ponds, rising junior Irene Sesnie has become a powerhouse on Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Cross Country, Nordic Skiing, and Track and Field teams. Her name o en graces the leaderboard, her times among the best, but what defines her is strength behind the stats, with patience, perseverance, and passion.
Irene’s journey began in seventh grade when, encouraged by friends and family, she decided to join the Cross Country team. “I knew I liked to run and could do so pretty well,” she says. Her first race took her to the rolling trails of Mendon Ponds, where a mix of nerves and determination carried her across the finish line in first place. “I remember being proud of myself for taking the lead and not doubting myself,” she says.

Irene’s race-day mindset is rooted in consistency: same routine, same playlist, same focus, and she says, “Your mind quits before your body. Not letting doubt take over is an incredible advantage.”
She leans on pre-race habits like listening to the cross country team’s bus playlist and visualizing the course in segments. “I like to break the course up in my mind and create a loose plan so it doesn’t feel as overwhelming in the moment.” During the race itself, Irene brings her attention back to basics: posture, breathing, and one stride at a time, saying, “ is breakdown of mechanics calms my body and

Her 1500m personal record of 4:54 stands out as a major highlight, about which she says, “Achieving sub-five minutes this season was my biggest goal,” noting how few girls hit that mark each year. Now Irene is chasing new goals: winning a team Sectional title, qualifying for States again, and becoming an individual Sectional champion. rough it all, she credits her teammates and coaches, especially Coach Nolan Hoh, for creating a supportive and high-achieving environment. She says, “ e team aspect simply cannot go overlooked. We have so many amazing, caring, and compassionate people on this team.” She has known Coach Nolan, a dedicated three-sport coach, since her eighth grade year. His athletes appreciate his unwavering commitment, genuine care for every runner, and the sense of humor he brings to practices.

Beyond high school, Irene dreams of competing for a Division I program in cross country and track. And someday, a er her college racing days are over, she hopes to take on even longer distances, such as a marathon. “I would still love to run in my free time and share my joy of running with others,” she says.
For now, summer training is underway, complete with morningruns, teampractices, andplentyofdetermination. When she’s not running, Irene finds joy in painting and sketching. She enjoys spending time with animals and in nature, which she hopes to tie into her future career.
When asked what advice she’d give new runners, Irene’s words reflect the wisdom of someone who’s learned to trust the process: “Be patient with yourself and your progress. You will 100% see the improvement you want, if only you give it time.”
If there’s one thing Irene proves over and over again, it’s that greatness isn’t about avoiding pain but running through it.

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.
Reading: Individuals who have long wanted to read more should know that they’re not alone. A 2019 survey commissioned by the reading subscription service Scribd and conducted by The Harris Poll found that 35 percent of respondents wished they could read more. Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. But people who aspire to read more can take a book to the beach or out on the deck on a warm afternoon or evening. Leave the smartphone inside so you can relax and read distraction-free.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* In a practice called sexual death feigning, female dragonflies play dead to avoid sex. Why? A scientist at the University of Zurich observed that, when faced with aggressive males, female moorland hawker dragonflies will freeze in mid-air, fall to the ground and lie motionless in an attempt to avoid injury and sometimes even death that can result from being coerced into mating. Four other species, including the spider and praying mantis, are known to do this as well.

By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I will be traveling to the United Kingdom in July and will be on a ship with about 700 passengers. We are wondering whether it would be smart (or unnecessary) to get a COVID booster before the trip. We are both in our late 60s and have had all the available COVID shots. (The last one we received was on Oct. 10, 2024.)
I have mild asthma, and we both have BMIs of about 30 with no other health issues. There is so much information and misinformation on these vaccinations, so I would appreciate your educated opinion. -- O.W.I.
ANSWER: In my opinion, it would be very smart to get a COVID shot before you go, ideally at least two weeks ahead but no more than three months ahead. The vaccine takes about two weeks to work and gives its best protection for about three months.
At the time of this writing, a new strain (NB.1.8.1) is rapidly spreading in other countries and in North America. It would be very prudent for you both to get the vaccine, especially given your risk factors of being over 65, being a little overweight, and (in your case) having mild asthma. You may very well be exposed on a cruise ship, which is where some of the earliest COVID cases came from.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has recently set new requirements on who can get the vaccine, and they have done so without the input of experts -- the basic scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists who should all be giving input on vaccine policies. In short, administrators have removed your doctor’s ability to decide whether you are appropriate for the vaccine.
Since you are over 65, you and your husband should still be able to get the vaccine unless the FDA further restricts the ability to get vaccines. For others in similar situations, I recommend getting the vaccine while you still have this choice.
DR. ROACH WRITES: Quite a few readers asked me about a recent high-profile case of advanced prostate cancer -- President Joe Biden -- and how this could have happened.
I first answer with humility. I don’t know what the screening was like for President Biden. Although I have read reports that he was not being screened, I am not confident that I know enough to have an opinion on the appropriateness of the screening strategy used in his case.
Second, I answer from my knowledge on the biology of prostate cancer, which is that not all prostate cancers can be caught through screening. A PSA level can be low even with advanced cancer. Also, some prostate cancers can grow very quickly in between screenings. Both of these would be uncommon, however.
Screening does reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer but does not eliminate it. Prostate cancer death rates have decreased by about half in the U.S., partly from screening and partly due to improvements in medical, radiological and surgical treatment.
Third and most importantly, I answer with compassion. Looking backward is not helpful to the person who is facing a difficult diagnosis. I wish the best for President Biden and his family, and I am confident that he will get the best care available.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
