Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

Remember, vinegar can help inhibit mildew growth. Therefore, keep a bottle of diluted vinegar around to spray on plastic mesh and furniture that gets wet from the rain or a pool. Store outdoor furniture away from inclement weather whenever possible to prolong its life.

Start with your windows. The windows in a home can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their heating and cooling costs. On cold days, pull back curtains so the natural sunlight can come in and warm the house, reducing the need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat. When the weather outside is especially warm, hang blackout curtains to prevent the hot sun from warming rooms and increasing the need for air conditioning. In addition, address any leaks around windows to ensure hot and cold air is not escaping and contributing to excessive energy consumption. There
Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.
Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damagedbranches, necessitatingapruning.Inotherinstances, treesmay have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape.
Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.
Serves 6 to 8
2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices
1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey
1/2 cup white wine
Zest of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
Fresh sage sprigs for garnish
1. Melt the butter in a large skillet overmediumheat.Addtheapples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.
2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.
3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

DID YOU KNOW? When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States, modern farmhouse is the most favored house style. The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/ southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor. The modern farmhouse style was the most popular choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography. Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”

My Friend, Linda by Sylva Palmer
I never had a sister, Only brothers and my sons. Although I love them dearly ey weren’t into “girlie” fun.
A lady moved in down the street, So I took a little walk. She turned out to be a friendly sort And we began to talk and talk.
roughout the years our bond grew strong, And we discussed all sorts of things. We talked of books and TV shows, Politics, weather and our offspring.
We sometimes got in trouble, Like getting lost out in the woods; Or trying on some gaudy hats, Laughing louder than we should.
Our coffee time was sacred. Nothing stopped our daily meet. During COVID we set up outside Observing a safe six feet.
But tragically my friend got sick. She fought for four long years. is month will mark a year gone by, And I still can’t stop the tears.
She was my friend, my confidant, My sounding board, “my sister,” And as long as I live on I know I’ll always miss her.
Rest in peace, Linda
Ali is almost 8 years old. He’s a rescue from Rochester Animal Services. His favorite season is summer because all the leaves are bloomed for him to “ghost walk” in.
From Geneseo to Spencerport, more cafes and breweries are allowing pets on patios. Call ahead or check social media, but many outdoor spots now welcome well-behaved pups. Don’t forget water and shade... those sunny patio bricks get hot!
Summertime in places like Leicester, Bloomfield, and Livonia often means a sudden whiff in the night. Yes—skunks. If your dog gets curious and too close, it’s best to stay calm. Tomato juice isn’t the magic cure it’s made out to be; a mix of baking soda, peroxide, and dish soap works better. Skunks tend to wander at night, so a motion sensor light or supervised evening potty breaks can help avoid late-night stink emergencies.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, I had my 9-year-old, part-poodle/Maltese dog’s teeth cleaned. The vet had to pull two teeth as well. Since this was done, “Scoobie” seems to make an odd noise as he is breathing. I feel like this is due to the tube they put down his throat as they cleaned his teeth. When I got him home, he had a hacking cough, which subsided about three days later. But the noise he makes when breathing continues. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, though. I like our vet a lot and hate to question him, so hopefully you can help me out or let me know what I could ask the vet. -- Valeeta R., Montgomery, Alabama
DEAR VALEETA: A good veterinarian will not mind extra questions from a pet owner,so I encourage you to contact your vet and describe Scoobie’s breathing noise.
In fact, you should go ahead and bring Scoobie in to have thevetcheckoutthenoiseinpersonsohecanruleoutany serious issues.Pets that are put under general anesthesia for certain procedures (such as the tooth scaling Scoobie had) can develop complications afterward, ranging from stress reactions to major health emergencies. Don’t be worried about bothering your vet -- your dog’s health is the most important thing here.
Ask lots of questions, and insist on straightforward answers from the vet -- not answers designed just to make you feel better. If afterward you feel that you didn’t receive satisfactory answers, or if Scoobie doesn’t improve, take your dog to another vet for a second opinion.

With all the negative, questionable and just plain bad news out there lately, I’ll take good news anywhere I can find it.
And one place is the website Good News Network (www. goodnewsnetwork.org). GNN, started in 1997, currently has 21,000 good news stories from around the world. Categories range from life, to gardening, to health, business and more.
There’s a free app for the phone, and if you don’t like to see ads, you can pay a yearly fee of $15 to get rid of them. Or click the “Subscribe” button to get a free bit of good news in your email each day.
There’s even a GNN book: “And Now, The Good News: 20 Years of Inspiring News Stories,” by Geri Weis-Corbley, available on Amazon in paperback. The reviews for the book are great, saying that the short stories are real mood-lifters. I’ll be ordering it. Here’s an example: The bank that lost 66 of its employees on 9/11 have paid to put all those employees’ kids through college. How great is that?!
Here’s another one from the book: A piece of a family farm was being sold at auction and a very young family member wanted to bid and hopefully win back the property. By common agreement, all the other 200 farmers at the auction stayed silent while the young family member was bidding. He won back the family’s farm land.
The Good News Network isn’t the only bright spot. Positive News (www.positive.news) will send a good news email once a week. The categories range from society to science to economics and more. It’s British, which makes it even more interesting. If you’d rather look around on your own, do an online search for good news, positive world news or even good news for seniors. You’re sure to find something to smile about!

A heartfelt thank you to the parking and office staff of the Orleans County 4H Fair for their courtesy, thoughtfulness, and follow-up. Our precious granddaughter lost an item that is very special to her at a few levels within minutes of walking away from our parked car. With heavy hearts, we went to the fair office to inquire about lost and found, and our number and the item description were taken with a promise to call if it was found. As it is a high demand item, we expected nothing, but to my surprise, I got a call two days later that it had been found! A very, very special thank you again to fair staff for follow-through and honesty. These lessons are more valuable than the item itself and I thank you all for being a part of the village it takes to raise a child right! We also had a wonderful time at the fair! Great job, as always!
I am so grateful for our libraries. I have the fondest memories of weekly trips to the library with my father. Now I can share that experience with my grandson. We attend the weekly story time at two libraries. He is able to enjoy fabulous stories, engage in craft projects, and/or dance and play with other children. Of course, libraries offer more than that. They provide internet access for those who do not have it at home. They provide employment resources for those looking for jobs. They offer a variety of fun classes and build community. Of course, you can always find a good read there. Our communities are enriched by our libraries. And thank you to the librarians who make it happen.
I live in [local town] on a side street. The complex behind me thinks it’s okay to use my driveway and lawn to cut through to their apartment. If that isn’t bad enough, dropping trash along the way. Then it’s all hours of the day and night. I hear their convos on phone with each other and their loud music. If you live in [town] please think of your neighbors.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What advice do you have for the treatment of gallstones? -- N.W.
ANSWER: Gallstones are common (6% of men and 9% of women will get one over a lifetime) and are mostly composed of bile salts and cholesterol. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and the risk of complications. Depending on the size and composition of a person’s gallstones, there are different therapies available.
Themostcommontreatmentforsymptomaticgallstonesissurgery. Surgery is highly effective, although there are complications such as bleeding, infection and leaks. About 10% of people will develop diarrhea after surgery, which tends to get better over weeks to months but sometimes requires treatment with a bileacid-binding drug like cholestyramine. Surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means faster healing times.
For people who are not good candidates for surgery (such as those with significant medical illnesses) or people who do not want surgery, there are other options. Medications given by mouth, such as ursodiol (Actigall), can dissolve gallstones, but this can take a long time, usually several years. People with smaller stones that are mostly made of cholesterol can be good candidates for this treatment. However, it is not 100% effective.
Another option is a tube placed into the gallbladder through the abdominal wall to drain bile, which is also sometimes done to remove stones, but I have seldom seen it done. Similarly, shockwave treatment, which is commonly used for kidney stones, is rarely used but can be a reasonable option in people with only one or two stones.
Contact your local bar association. According to the ABA®, bar associations in most communities will make referrals according to specific areas of law. This can ensure people without much or any experience hiring lawyers find one with the right experience and practice concentration. Local referral services also may help, and the ABA® notes that many, though not all, have competency requirements for lawyers who wish to be referred. When speaking with a referral service, ask if they have such requirements in place and how frequently they reevaluate lawyers they refer.

JOHN DEMING
e School of Rochester City Ballet (SRCB) is thrilled to announce John Deming as its new School Director. A Rochester native, Deming brings a lifetime of professional ballet experience, a deep passion for dance, and a strong connection to the local arts community.
Deming’s dance journey began early, shaped by a rich family history in ballet. His grandmother danced recreationally at the School of American Ballet in New York City, and his mother, Julia Deming, performed professionally with the Harkness House before returning to Rochester. Julia was one of the first teachers at Draper Center for Dance Education (formerly Mercury Ballet), where John trained in his formative years.
ough he initially resisted dance classes, it wasn’t long before ballet won him over. Deming recalls being placed in a boys’ athletic class as a child, which didn’t resonate with him. But at age 11, he returned to ballet and “never looked back.” At 17, he moved to Boston to train with Boston Ballet on a full scholarship, a pivotal time that exposed him to a broad range of classes and performance opportunities. “I loved Boston as a community,” Deming says, appreciating both the training and the experience of seeing the full scope of a professional ballet company in action.
A er two years in Boston, Deming launched his professional career with Carolina Ballet under the direction of Robert Weiss and worked with artists like Zalman Raffael—whom he praises as “an amazing artistic director.” From there, he spent three years with Ballet Memphis, performing works by esteemed choreographers like Matthew Neenan, Jennifer Archibald, and Mark Godden, while also having the opportunity to tour, including performances in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.
Deming later trained in Fort Lauderdale under Magaly Suarez, a legendary Cuban ballet teacher whose inspiring style profoundly influenced him. Suarez’s ability to command the studio while nurturing students’ growth remains a model for Deming’s own teaching philosophy.
In 2018, family and community ties called him back to Rochester. When Rochester City Ballet needed a dancer on short noticeforaperformanceof Raymonda Suites, Deming stepped in—and never le . Now, a er seven years of performing principal roles in classics like Swan Lake, e Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty, Deming is planting even deeper roots: a home, a fiancée (fellow RCB dancer Katherine Duffy), and a beloved dog. Rochester, he says, truly feels like home again.
“The art form inspires me. [In dance], you’re always looking for perfection, but you know you’ll never get there. There’s always something to work on, something that can get better.” JOHN DEMING
As School Director, Deming is passionate about guiding the next generation of dancers. He is excited about the school’s momentum and the strong sense of community at its heart.
“We’re excited about the collaboration with Rochester City Ballet, Draper, a lot of wonderful organizations and residents,” he says. Upcoming projects include collaborations with local groups like the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), including performances of Romeo & Juliet excerpts at the RPO Dance Festival and the beloved annual Nutcracker anksgiving weekend.
Deming raves about their first collaboration with the Society of Chamber Music in this weekend’s Anastasia productions, and they look forward to collaborating with the Chamber in future productions. rough all of the opportunities, Deming focuses on cultivating an environment of patience, resilience, and joy among his students.
Reflecting on the Rochester artistic community, Deming says, “We are so lucky to have such great organizations, the orchestras, the art galleries, all of it. And we want to keep that alive with the dance school.” He hopes SRCB’s work will inspire young dancers and continue to enrich Rochester’s vibrant community.
About his own artistic journey, he says, “ e art form inspires me. [In dance], you’re always looking for perfection, but you know you’ll never get there. ere’s always something to work on, something that can get better.” He candidly admits that earlier in his career, frustration over imperfection was common, but with time, however, he has embraced the long view, reminding himself, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and dance demands patience and persistence.
Share your original stories about local heroes, community events, school achievements, or hidden gems–email your story idea to hometown@gvpennysaver.com!
To aspiring dancers, he offers both humor and wisdom: “Point your feet!” he laughs, before turning serious, saying, “Don’t get frustrated with yourself. ere’s always tomorrow (we assume, of course). You always get another chance to develop.” He emphasizes the importance of trusting the process, being tenacious about technique, and, most importantly, enjoying the journey: “If it’s not fun, then don’t do it.” Deming is passionate about what he does every day, and he hopes aspiring dancers find what inspires them as well.
e School of Rochester City Ballet prides itself on blending professionalism with passion. Every faculty member is a professional dancer, and the school offers a comprehensive curriculum rooted in the Vaganova technique. Students enjoy rich performance opportunities alongside the Rochester City Ballet company. With Deming’s leadership, the school is poised to grow even stronger, nurturing creativity, discipline, and a lifelong love of dance in every student.
Stop by and say hi to Deming and his colleagues at the school’s next Open House on May 25, where they welcome all to experience firsthand how SRCB’s professional dancers nurture the next generation. To learn more about programs, visit www.schoolofrcb.com.
