While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summertemperaturesreachtheir hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.

Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.

Bridge Closure
The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.

The peace of avoiding the daily news
One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.
At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.
Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.
That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.
Here are a few things I accomplished:
I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch.
A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours.This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.
I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.
That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted. If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful.

Before social media, people connected over coffee, conversation—and cars. In towns like Caledonia, Warsaw, and Le Roy, weekends in the 1950s and ‘60s often meant polishing your ride and cruising down Main Street.

Nothing beats the flavor of fresh-picked fruits and vegetables, but growing your own food benefits more than just your taste buds! Here are a few more great reasons to start a vegetable garden of your own or a community garden:
• Eating just-picked ripened vegetables from your garden lets you enjoy peak nutritional value over food that has been harvested, shipped and distributed to a grocery store.
• Gardening promotes functional fitness through movement. It also treats your body to fresh air and Vitamin D from the sunlight.
• Growing your own food reduces use of fossil fuels traditionally needed to transport produce from farms to grocers.
Getting started is as easy as picking an area that receives at least six hours of daylight exposure, whether it’s a plot of earth or a raised planter box. Find out what grows well in your area by talking to neighbors or vendors at your local farmers’ market, then start small with something you really enjoy eating!
All-Natural Strategies to Safely Protect Fruits and Vegetables
• Plant gardens in raised beds. Raised beds can eliminate some garden infiltration by small critters that come up and under from the ground, such as rabbits, gophers, groundhogs, slugs, and some other crawling pests.
• Prepare homemade insecticide. The environmental information site Treehugger provides information on making a homemade insecticide from vegetable oil and a mild soap. Use one cup of oil with one tablespoon of soap (such as Dr Bronner’s castile soap). Add this mixture to one quart of water in a spray bottle. This concoction can eradicate aphids, mites, thrips, and more by coating insects’ bodies and effectively suffocating them. Soap-and-water sprays or even neem oil sprays work similarly.
• Sprinkle diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth, commonly known as DE, is an abrasive powder comprised of fossilized algae diatoms. It’s commonly used as a filter medium in swimming pools, but also makes an effective pesticide. The material’s abrasive and absorbent qualities draw moisture out of insects, essentially dehydrating them to death. DE can be sprinkled around the base of plants, but will need to be reapplied a er rain and watering.
• Space out plants. Tightly planted crops create a breeding ground for fungal diseases and also provide hiding spots and warmth for pests. Leaving room between plants can help avoid these issues, according to Gardening Channel.
• Use row covers or garden mesh. Many plants can be covered all year long as long as the covers are li ed during flowering if the crops depend on pollination by bees. Veggiemesh® is a cover that can be laid over plants.
• Interplant crops in the garden. Interplanting is a technique that involves alternating crops, herbs and flowers to confuse the pests so they have a difficult time finding what they want to eat. Alternate rows of vegetables with herbs and flowers that appeal to beneficial insects.

DEAR DR. ROACH: IjustfoundoutthatIhaveakidney stone. I’m 77 years old, and I don’t want to deal with it. I’ve heard of potassium citrate and pulverizing it with sound waves. Are these options? -- J.M.
ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones. Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy.The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).
Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).
My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.
Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.
If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.

Cupcakes Makes 12
Cupcakes:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup self-raising flour
Zest of 1 lemon
Drizzle:
Juice of 2 lemons
5 1/2 tablespoons sugar
LemonButtercream:
1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/4 cups powdered sugar
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Sprinkles
Lemon Zest
Preheat the oven to 350° F and get 12 cupcake liners ready. Beat the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, self-raising flour and lemon zest and mix until combined. Spoon the mix evenly into the cupcake liners and bake for 18-22 minutes until they are baked through and springy to the touch.
Mix together the lemon juice and sugar for the drizzle in a bowl. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, carefully spoon the drizzle over the cupcakes, then leave them to cool fully on a wire rack while you make the buttercream.
Beat the butter until smooth; this can take a couple of minutes. Add the powdered sugar in two batches, beating well after each addition, then add the lemon juice and beat again.
Pipe or spread the buttercream onto your cupcakes, then sprinkle each one with some sprinkles and lemon zest.

Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

What is heat stroke? Phantom pregnancy in dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside.
He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York
DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.
Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.
The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.

Closer looks at what is hiding in plain sight in nature can lead to compelling pictures. Zoom in and think about a macro lens, which will magnify even the tiniest details.
