Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls.

Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y.

Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Dr. Ken Kreuzer: A Life of Music, Community, and Creative Growth

For Dr. Ken Kreuzer, music is not just a career—it’s an inseparable part of who he is. Raised in Webster, Kreuzer and his younger brothers, Mark and John, grew up with his parents’ musical preferences of the ‘60s and ‘70s, with lots of bass and drums from his dad and classic song writers like Barry Manilow from his mom.

Today, Dr. K calls Henrietta home, teaches at Honeoye Falls-Lima, and plays with a variety of music groups, including the HFL Jazz Combo, the HFL Marching Band, BT3 with two former students, Bernard Tomaszewski and Noah Close, and Bangers & Mash with colleague Milt Mashner, Alek Drummond, and former student Dan Atkinson.

Kreuzer says, “It wasn’t really a question that I was going to pursue music.” Early on, he realized teaching would offer him the most sustainable path within the field, though writing music remains a near-daily practice. He taught at Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Manor Intermediate School for 16 years before transitioning to HF-L High School, where he’s now taught for five years. He is a beloved teacher across the district and his passion for music is clear.

Kreuzer’s earliest musical memories include being struck by the harmonic movement in Fiddler on the Roof, specifically the G harmonic minor in “If I Were a Rich Man.” To this day, he says he “sometimes hears things in relation to that framework.” Another life-changing experience came when, after only three months of playing the trombone, he joined the Rochester Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, where he says, “Really sitting there and listening to such incredible music (Brahms’ 2nd Symphony) changed my life.”

Kreuzer earned a bachelor’s degree at Ithaca College, a master’s in compositions at East Carolina University, and a doctorate in music composition at University of Hartford. His musical journey includes formative experiences teaching music theory, composition, and 20th century history at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Virginia. There he met prominent musicians who would later record his original music.

Kreuzer also raves about the rare opportunity to conduct the Virginia Symphony Orchestra that he considers a critical “training ground for [his] varied musical interests.”

Today, Kreuzer is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist lending his expertise to the next generation. At school, he plays and teaches a wide range of instruments, including the entire brass section, flute, percussion, bass guitar, and piano. Personally, he most enjoys playing piano and bass, especially while performing with BT3 and Bangers & Mash. Recently, he even relished the opportunity to play trombone with Into the Now.

Kreuzer is a beloved music teacher known for his collaborative, welcoming teaching style that helps students reach for their creative potential. He says his “favorite part is the kids’ journey individually and/or as a group, those magical moments of performance, magical moments in each lesson. It’s rewarding and fun to work on technique and then apply that to create emotion.” Teaching and performing enrich each other in Kreuzer’s life. Working with students, he says, enhances his understanding of music and pedagogy while “Life outside of music—and gaining more life experience—has made me more truthful in the way I write and live.”

Kreuzer describes inspiration, initial ideas as most exciting, “energy in its purist form [and] it must be captured at the moment it arrives in my mind.” He says since inspiration often arrives unexpectedly, he always carries staff paper with him to record ideas. His approach to songwriting blends structural knowledge of wavelengths, frequencies, durations, and pitches, with emotional resonance, developed over years of classical composition before embracing his songwriters’ voice around age 35. He says he considers himself “a vessel and [tries] to accept the music as it comes to [him] and not impose too much of [his] ego on it.”

He adds that after so many years writing songs in different keys, he’s begun to associate colors with the keys: “Not necessarily specific colors, but different amounts of warmth or brightness. When my ear is super tuned from playing lots of scales, I can feel the color of the music. Beyond the notes and rhythms, there is depth, weight, and emphasis in everything. And while most of this is intuitive, I think it’s important to cognitively understand what it is.” He finds himself inspired by “this primal understanding and kinship with sound.”

Working with Sam Polizzi and Johnny Cummings at Sound Notion Studio, Kreuzer found a creative partnership of “equal voices and input,” saying, “In collaboration, the most powerful path I can take is when I let everyone do and create exactly as they hear their parts and not just produce my vision but add their influence as well. The vision starts with me as a songwriter, but the freedom given to the performers allows them the freedom to truly be creative.”

His latest release, To Circle the Sun, includes songs in different forms, in different keys, with many sections and tonal centers to create contrast and make the musical journey

For Kreuzer, ultimate goals are simple: to continue growing musically and personally, always placing process and authenticity above commercial success. Above all, Kreuzer’s advice to aspiring musicians, students, and everyone else is: “Never give up. Live your dreams, even if it takes a long time to fully realize them.” To quote a lyric from his “Some of My Days” song, he says, “In the end all you’ll be is what you give when you’re alive.”

Dry Cough Persisting for a Decade Might Indicate Asthma

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a dry cough that’s been going on for about 13-14 years. I’m a healthy 62-year-old and read that it is called “cough variant asthma.” I would like to know more about this but can’t really find anything about it, except that it will eventually get worse if it’s not treated. I was checked twice in the past 15 years for asthma, and I wasn’t diagnosed. However, I’ve not been diagnosed with any acid reflux or postnasal drip. -- D.S. ANSWER:Although most people think that asthma causes wheezing, cough is a very common symptom of asthma. You’ve named the two other most common causes of chronic cough: acid reflux and postnasal drip. It can be tricky to make these diagnoses.

Very often, primary care doctors will do a “therapeutic trial” that involves a short-term prescription to see if there is improvement. For acid reflux, it might be an H2 blocker like famotidine (Pepcid), which acts faster than a proton-pump inhibitor like omeprazole. This is often faster, easier, and much less expensive than a diagnostic test like a 24-hour pH monitor (the gold-standard diagnostic test).

Similarly, a physician might give a trial of asthma medication (such as a bronchodilator like albuterol) to see if it stops the cough, rather than immediately testing a person’s pulmonary function with a trial of bronchodilators -- a standard diagnostic test for asthma. Sometimes a pulmonologist will order a “methacholine challenge test” where an airway irritant is given at very low doses to see if it will trigger an asthma response in the lung. Postnasal drip can sometimes be confirmed by a physical exam, but a fiberoptic laryngoscopy is seldom necessary to make the diagnosis.

When therapeutic trials are not helpful, diagnostic tests become necessary. I personally order lung testing before and after bronchodilators on all patients with suspected asthma, as the tests give important information beyond a diagnosis. Lung testing can be used to follow the course of the disease and identify whether there may be a separate problem in addition to asthma.

Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity.

Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Convenience versus safety sometimes it’s impossible to have both when it comes to tech devices.

There are more smart devices than we could have imagined 10 years ago, and every day brings something new. We have smart door locks, thermostats, refrigerators, indoor and outdoor security cameras, televisions, cellphones, light bulbs, speakers and wall plugs.

Whether it’s data breaches, surveillance, intrusions, hijack of your device or outright cyber attacks and theft of your information, smart devices can make you vulnerable if they are hacked.

Take smart thermostats, for example. Those smart gadgets track all kinds of things about you. Scariest of all is that they keep track of when you leave home and when you come back, information that a thief would like to have.

If you want a smart device, be sure you understand the downside and the risks. Keep the software updated, use strong passwords and understand the settings, especially on any device with a camera or microphone. Your smart television speakers could work in the reverse and capture the sounds in the room, for example.

Before you buy a smart device, or to learn more about devices you might already have, go online to search for “dangers of smart devices.”

DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong.

Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn.

When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

• Clean up debris. Spend a few hours raking up leaves from the lawn and removing any other winter debris like twigs so that air can reach the grass below. Also remove any thatch that has developed.

• Test the soil. Take a sample of the soil to determine its pH level and nutrient needs. Then you can make adjustments to set a strong foundation for the lawn to grow.

• Do some weeding. Pull out any weeds that have poked through early on and apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent additional weeds from taking over.

• Start the aeration process. A core aerator punches holes into the soil. This enables air and water to penetrate through to the roots.

• Overseed the lawn. Apply grass seeds over the lawn, paying special attention to any bare or thin areas so that the seed will fill in the lawn.

• Water consistently. It is important to water the lawn deeply and consistently, especially when the weather is dry, to help promote strong root development.

• Time fertilizer correctly. Apply a spring fertilizer around three weeks after the lawn starts to turn green or after the first two or three mowings. If fertilizer is applied too early it can feed weeds instead of the grass and result in fertilizer runoff.

• Mow to an appropriate height. Begin to mow when the ground is dry enough and the grass is long enough to need cutting. Leave some length to the lawn; otherwise, sunlight will reach the soil and encourage weed seeds to germinate.

• An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a portable grill or as elaborate as your budget will allow. A DIY pizza oven can also be a fun way to enjoy cooking outside.

• Fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas bring coziness along with great function - and they help extend the outdoor enjoyment in cooler weather.

Accessories. Just like indoor room, outdoor rooms benefit from appropriate accessories. Make sure you plan for them in your budget as well as in your designs.

• Lighting - Landscape lighting, lanterns, candles or strings of white outdoor lights can all add beautiful ambience.

• Sound - Add pleasing audio with outdoor stereo sound systems, trickling water features or even just simple wind chimes.

I wrote a check to give to my child’s teacher. I don’t know whether it fell out of her pocket on the bike ride to school, in front of the school, in the school, or in the garbage with scrap paper as she thought it had, but thank you to whatever good human put it in my mailbox. It’s not a large sum of money, but anyone could’ve written cash and cashed it. Instead, it was put in my mailbox carefully. Thank you! We all need a little reminder that there are good people and this was mine for today.

Enjoy your breakfast We were out to eat at a smaller, local restaurant for breakfast this past weekend when a large group coming in needed a few of the tables together. While they were in the process of moving things around a older couple came in to eat and was told they didn’t have a table to seat them. That’s when a younger couple sitting at a table in the middle offered up their available 2 seats to the older couple to all enjoy breakfast together. Truly a sweet sentiment.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like basic kindness doesn’t exist around here anymore? I’ve noticed lately that so many parents seem to avoid eye contact, rarely say hello, or even acknowledge each other - and I’m genuinely curious why. No smiles, no ‘excuse me,’ no ‘thank you.’ It feels cold and honestly, it’s sad.

I’m not posting this to point fingers or judge anyone - life is busy and we all have our moments. Our kids are watching. They see how we treat each other. But we can do better for each other and for our children.

Guilt-Free Banana Chocolate Smoothie Makes 4 1-cup servings 11/2 cups chocolate soy milk 3 ounces chopped dark chocolate 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, preferably Dutch-processed 2 tablespoons bee pollen 2 tablespoons flaxseed oil 2 cups sliced banana 1 cup chocolate frozen yogurt 2 tablespoons shaved chocolate for garnish (optional) Combine soy milk, chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, bee pollen, flaxseed oil, and banana in a blender or smoothie maker. Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape.
