Should indoor cats wear flea collars?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: At my cat’s last veterinary visit, it was recommended that she wear a flea collar or get a monthly flea treatment. “Belle” is a completely indoor cat and has never had fleas. Why do I need to prevent her from getting them? -- Carla G., Gulf Shores, Alabama

DEAR CARLA: While it seems totally reasonable to not treat Belle for fleas, there is always a risk of getting them. This is the same logic behind routine vaccinations -- it’s unlikely that an indoor cat will be exposed to rabies, but there is always a chance.

I’ll give you a personal example. Last fall, I took care of a friend’s dog for a few weeks while they were away dealing with a family emergency. On the first day, I noticed that “Kerry” was chewing on his tail and his hair was almost gone at the base of his tail. I knew right away that he had fleas, and a visual check confirmed it. All of my pets are treated for fleas, even though my cat stays indoors. With my friend’s permission, I treated Kerry with a topical flea treatment and kept him separated from the other pets for a few days until no live fleas could be found in his fur. I also monitored all my pets for fleas during his visit.

I hadn’t planned on Kerry arriving with fleas, but his owner had forgotten to give him his monthly flea treatment for a couple of months. This unplanned situation could have been a real problem for me and my pets.

There’s an old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that is certainly the case with fleas, which can be hard to eliminate from your home once they get a foothold. There are many options today -- not just collars -- to prevent fleas from getting on your cat. Talk to your vet about the treatment they recommend for Belle.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. Elsa Maxwell was dubbed “hostess with the mostest” and had an affinity for throwing luxurious and entertaining parties. She often organized scavenger hunts for the guests that involved roaming around town, seeking objects from a list.

Act of Kindness

Recently, while dining at T’s Restaurant in Webster for breakfast, I had to help my husband sit down in the booth, and cut his pancakes and bacon for him. He has some disabilities. When we finished, the waitress came by and said that we were all set regarding the bill. I looked at her, puzzled, and she told us that another patron had noticed how I had cared for my husband, and paid our bill! We were so taken aback by that gesture. Our deepest gratitude and thanks to that kind soul. May God bless you!

Auction Never Paid for My Goods

An auctioneer came to my home and told me he could sell all the things I had to sell, giving me 75% of the money he received and he’d keep only 25% for himself. I said good. He seemed like a decent man. October 2024, he loaded a large trailer with all my stuff, including a bedroom with all the furniture. They were in my garage about four hours taking everything they could. To this day, I haven’t gotten anything from him. I do have pictures of all the stuff they took. I don’t know what to do at this time. Do not trust anyone who comes to your house telling you they want to auction off your goods as they did mine. Be aware and beware.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY

It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Q. A.

ANSWER: In general, screening for blockages in the carotid arteries that provide blood flow to the brain is not recommended, but occasionally, I do see people who get the diagnosis made as part of a study or as a result of a diagnostic test that was performed for some other reason. Screening means that there are no present symptoms, and the management of asymptomatic blockages is different from symptomatic ones.

Not everybody with blockages needs surgical intervention. Guidelines recommend against surgery in people with no symptoms who have less than 70% stenosis. Only when the blockage is greater than 70% is surgery considered.

Medical treatment is effective at reducing the risk of a stroke and includes a high dose of a potent statin agent, aspirin, the careful control of high blood pressure and diabetes (if appropriate), quitting smoking, a healthy diet (such as Mediterraneanstyle), regular exercise, and weight reduction in some people.

HIV itself increases the risk of stroke by about 40% compared to people without HIV, so it is appropriate to be more aggressive at reducing risk factors. This is similar to what we see in people with chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, who have a higher heart disease and stroke risk than what would be expected based on their other risk factors.

Your HIV provider may wish to consult an expert in cardiovascular disease prevention to help you reduce your stroke risk, although many HIV experts are also skilled primary care doctors themselves. Keeping HIV under control (ideally with no detectable virus) may help reduce inflammation and consequently bring down the additional risk of heart attack and stroke associated with HIV.

Q.DEAR DR. ROACH: My spouse is frustrated by a nagging case of plantar fasciitis. It’s been continuing for five or six months now. No amount of stretching, icing or resting seems to help. They are considering using a plantar fasciitis sock device that holds the foot in a specific position to provide relief. I am wondering if you could provide any other suggestions on how to reduce or eliminate this problem. -- M.R.

ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is among the most common causes of foot pain, with nearly 1% of people complaining of plantar fasciitis pain during the previous month. Inflammation and pain most commonly occur at the bottom of the foot, just in front of the heel. The pain is often worst during the first step in the morning.

A.

Rest and cushioned shoes or heel pads are helpful for most people. I am cautious about recommending stretching, especially when the pain is severe, as overdoing stretching can make things worse.Still, most people find stretching to be of benefit. When symptoms do not get resolved with conservative management, I refer patients to a podiatrist. Some people just take a long time to heal, but 80% are better within a year. When conservative measures have failed to bring relief, your spouse’s podiatrist might consider an injection of a steroid.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

UNIQUE LOCATIONS TO HOST A WEDDING

Museums: Couples who want their guests to take a stroll through history before they watch the happy couple stroll down the aisle can consider tying the knot at a local museum. Many museums offer a variety of ceremony and reception options. The vaulted ceilings and airy quality of many art museums make them an ideal place to host large gatherings. The unique decor of such facilities guarantees couples will get some awe-inspiring photos on their big day.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Special Spring Chimney Cleanings & Inspections

DID YOU KNOW?

Using reclaimed timber when building or renovating a home benefits the environment in various ways. According to GreenBusinessWatch. org, building and renovating with reclaimed timber helps to preserve forests by greatly reducing the need to cut down trees. In addition, when using reclaimed timber to build or renovate a home, contractors and homeowners tend to use locally sourced reclaimed wood, reducing the need to transport wood from afar to complete the projects. That reduced reliance on transportation reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Processing reclaimed timber is often less taxing on the environment than processing virgin wood. However, reclaimed timber may provide more than just environmental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.

Spring Lawn Revitalization Spring Lawn Revitalization home services

Revitalizing a lawn in spring is a multifaceted process but can be well worth the reward when green grass adds to a beautiful landscape and functional yard. Here is how to get started when the weather warms, courtesy of The Farmer’s Almanac and The Home Depot.

Can’t do it all? Hiring a great, local company can get your lawn looking the best it can!

• Clean up debris. Spend a few hours raking up leaves from the lawn and removing any other winter debris like twigs so that air can reach the grass below. Also remove any thatch that has developed.

• Test the soil. Take a sample of the soil to determine its pH level and nutrient needs. Then you can make adjustments to set a strong foundation for the lawn to grow.

• Do some weeding. Pull out any weeds that have poked through early on and apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent additional weeds from taking over.

• Start the aeration process. A core aerator punches holes into the soil. This enables air and water to penetrate through to the roots.

• Overseed the lawn. Apply grass seeds over the lawn, paying special attention to any bare or thin areas so that the seed will fill in the lawn.

• Water consistently. It is important to water the lawn deeply and consistently, especially when the weather is dry, to help promote strong root development.

• Time fertilizer correctly. Apply a spring fertilizer around three weeks after the lawn starts to turn green or after the first two or three mowings. If fertilizer is applied too early it can feed weeds instead of the grass and result in fertilizer runoff.

• Mow to an appropriate height. Begin to mow when the ground is dry enough and the grass is long enough to need cutting. Leave some length to the lawn; otherwise, sunlight will reach the soil and encourage weed seeds to germinate.

The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits.

Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks.

Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

Homemade hummus with truly unique taste

Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot

Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread

Makes 2 cups

2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped

Salt

1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained

4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish

2 tablespoons chopped red onion

21/2 teaspoons ground cumin

11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds

2 tablespoons lemon juice

4 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons chile flakes

2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below)

Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below)

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.

Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

Moroccan Spice Blend

Makes about 2 tablespoons

In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine 1 teaspoon each of: ground cumin, ground turmeric, saffron threads, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, ground smoked paprika, finely grated lemon peel.

Yogurt Flatbread

Serves 4

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon coarse salt

21/2 cups plain yogurt

Olive oil

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

HOME OF THE FREE,

Celebrated the last Monday in May, Memorial Day honors the men and women who lost their lives in war serving the United States. Originally intended to honor soldiers who died in the Civil War, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress in 1971, honoring all of America’s fallen. It is also known as Decoration Day.

THE RED POPPY: A symbol of sacrifice

In 1915, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician and poet, penned a now-famous poem titled “In Flanders Fields” after he saw bright red poppies sprouting among the graves of Allied troops buried in Europe during World War I. e flower has since become a symbol of remembrance, honoring the veterans who lost their lives in battle.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, at mark our place; and in the sky e larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw e torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

– John McCrae, 1872-1918

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE

Choose the right date and time

Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares.

Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

Some of us are new to retirement and the questions quickly become: Now what? What do I do with my days? Do I continue to set the alarm for the same time in the mornings?

If you planned in detail for your retirement and have a long list of things you intend to do, you know where to begin.

But the questions about what to do with our retired days can be poignant for those who perhaps didn’t have a choice about retirement. Maybe there were health considerations. Maybe there were expectations of retirement upon reaching a certain age in a certain career. But for whatever reason, here’s retirement, ready or not. Now what?

Start with a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list, the longer the better, of every interest you have. Ideally, somewhere on that list are the makings of worthwhile activities that are physical, social and mental.

Here are some random possibilities: explore photography, teach swimming at the YMCA, write a novel, knit or crochet hats and mittens for the local Santa fund next winter, create a family scrapbook with genealogy information and photos for the next generation, play pickleball at the rec center, become a Citizen Scientist (see CitizenScience.gov), join a walking group, take a pottery class with a grandchild.

Then there are the all-important brain-stretcher activities: learn to play piano or guitar (or brush up on old skills), take a college course, play chess online, take a computer class to upgrade your skills, learn a language online (see Duolingo.com), read a book a week or start a book club.

My personal list includes dogs at the animal shelter. There are lots of dogs who need to be taken on adventure walking afternoons to pick up their spirits. I can do that a few times a week.

DANSVILLE’S VETERAN HONOR ROLL

At Williams Park in Dansville, visitors can view a recently restored World War II Honor Roll. Originally erected in the 1940s and later neglected, it now proudly displays the names of over 1,000 service members from the Dansville area who served during WWII. Accompanying plaques have been added for veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and beyond. It’s a powerful visual of how many families in a small town gave of themselves.

Magic Maze

The Senior Stretch

Stretching regularly can help alleviate pain, protect joints, prevent injury and maintain mobility as we age. Incorpora ng stretching sessions into your daily or weekly rou ne is a simple and effec ve way to enhance your health and well-being; a er all, you can do it anywhere, any me, without the need for any equipment. Here are a few ps to help seniors – or anyone – stretch safely:

• Warm up your muscles before stretching by walking or moving around for at least five minutes.

• Stretch gently and slowly, taking in a deep breath and exhaling as you stretch.

• Hold stretches for about 30 seconds, allowing muscles me to relax.

• Avoid bouncing while stretching, and never stretch to the point of pain.

Science-Backed Benefits of Strength Training 5

Experts generally recommend 20 to 30 minutes of strength training two or three mes per week. Here’s why:

Preserve and build muscle.

Muscle mass diminishes with age, increasing your body fat percentage. Strength training can help turn the tables and keep body fat in check.

Strengthen bones.

Strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

Manage weight.

Increasing your metabolism and muscle with weights helps you burn calories more efficiently.

Maintain flexibility and balance.

Weight-bearing exercise can protect your joints from injury and reduce symptoms of arthri s, while also lowering your risk of falls by improving balance.

Enhance mood and quality of life.

Strength training can help reduce symptoms of many chronic condi ons like depression, back pain, heart disease and diabetes. Research also suggests that exercise may help support cogni ve func on in older adults.

HONORING SERVICE AND SACRIFICE AT THE

Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester in Highland Park South stands as a solemn tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War and as a living, breathing space for remembrance, education, and healing for the rest of us. Designed and built through the efforts of an all-volunteer nonprofit, the memorial embodies our community’s enduring commitment to honor the sacrifices made during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.

Established in 1987, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester, Inc. received unanimous support and two acres in Highland Park from the Monroe County Legislature in 1990. Fundraising included the 1991 visit of e Moving Wall traveling exhibit like e Wall in DC (stay tuned for e Moving Wall’s visit to the National Warplane Museum in September). Construction of the memorial followed the 1992 groundbreaking,andin1994,thefirstof3,401treessymbolizing each Congressional Medal of Honor recipient were planted.

e memorial was dedicated to the community in 1996, and since then, it has become far more than a collection of monuments—it has evolved into a tranquil sanctuary and educational resource, touching countless lives beyond Vietnam veterans themselves.

A Journey rough the Memorial I enjoy the peace and reflection at this memorial and wanted to learn more about the significance of all the choices made in it. At the memorial’s Overlook stand seven flags, one for each US military branch, a POW/MIA flag, and an American flag flying highest. Beneath the flags lies a black granite relief map showing Vietnam and the United States in the world, the visual juxtaposition of distance and unity intentionally underscoring the geographical and emotional distance between the two nations and the people who united them. e two acres of memorial were even intentionally “sculpted to create landforms typical of rural Vietnam.”

en there’s the striking Walk of Honor, featuring stainless steel bollards recognizing the 280 Rochester area soldiers killed or missing in action in Vietnam. e bollards, lined chronologically by date of loss, include each soldier’s name, military branch, high school, and birth and death dates. e figures, significantly made of “America’s metal” representing the soldiers’ mettle, resemble human forms marching single file either heavily burdened with the weight they physically, emotionally, and metaphorically carried OR standing tall and proud, heads tipped back, with their faces turned to the sky. Either way visitors interpret the bollards, the design compels visitors to bow their heads reverently to read the names.

VVM WALK OF HONOR
VVM OVERLOOK

One thing becomes clear as you proceed down this Walk of Honor with the timeline of key American and global history recorded on the path pavers: We are all human. As Rochesterian George Cassidy Payne described at the memorial’s 20th anniversary, as one proceeds down the line of bollards, “ e schools repeat. e names blend in. e numbers lump together. But the loss, with every bollard, becomes that much more sorrowful.”

Nearby, the Medal of Honor Grove honors Vietnam-era recipients of the nation’s highest military award. Twenty-three American redbud trees commemorate the 23 Medal of Honor recipients from New York State. At the Veterans Garden, a striking sculpture of a soldier steps into a reflective black granite wall. Here, past and present merge. e sculpture is intentionally accessible, designers say, inviting visitors to touch it and see themselves reflected alongside the soldier, bridging the divide between the living and the lost. Finally, the Garden of Reflection offers a quiet, contemplative space where engraved stones urge visitors: “In the spirit of America, seize this place and this moment to commemorate, to educate, to heal, and to remember all who have served, now serve, and will serve this great country.”

Education and Legacy

True to its mission, the memorial also functions as an educational space. rough plaques, learning stones, and online presence, it brings the history and human cost of the Vietnam War into vivid view. One learning stone notes that the 280 individuals from the Greater Rochester area killed in the Vietnam War was more than the combined losses from over a dozen U.S. states.

e Learning Center shares sobering statistics: 8,744,000 Americans served in the five branches of the US Military during the main period of Vietnam hostilities, a number only surpassedinWWI.AlargepercentageofthoseAmericanssaw duty in Vietnam due to the one-year tour rotations. Average soldier age was 19, and 61% of those killed were under the age of 21.

58,184 American lives were lost, 313,616 were seriously wounded, and over 2,300 are still listed missing in action. e war cost the US $150b in direct expenses and another $150b in indirect expenses. And the Vietnam War was notably the first war “brought into the family living rooms by television with nightly body counts.”

A stone dedicated to the Veterans of America further honors those who suffered long a er the war ended, including from PTSD, Agent Orange-related illnesses, and suicide. It serves as a reminder that the price of war extends far beyond the battlefield, a powerful lesson we should all remember as we face conflict.

An Enduring Place of Healing

e memorial’s creation and upkeep are stewarded by a board of directors comprised of veterans from Vietnam, Korea, and the Persian Gulf who have served our community throughout their military and civilian lives. ey work hard to ensure the stories of those who served and sacrificed are never forgotten. More than a monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester is a living memorial—growing with each visitor, each emotion, each name whispered or touched in remembrance. is Memorial Day—and every day—the memorial calls us not only to remember the past, but to learn from it, and to carry its lessons into a more compassionate future.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marksanearly20percentincrease in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

BEAT THE TRAVEL CROWDS THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, if unlikely, even if you travel during off-peak hours. Recognition of that can make traffic jams or flight delays a little easier to manage. Parents can prepare kids for delays by letting them know in advance that some setbacks are possible. Build expected delays into your itinerary so you aren’t stressing out about missing anything. If travelers luck out and experience no delays, then the weekend begins that much sooner.
