Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. Dansville Peace Poster Contest Winner Moves on to State

ast fall, Dansville youth between eleven and thirteen years old turned in an incredible 84 entries to the Lions Club’s annual Peace Poster Contest which begins with local entries in October, progressing through regional and state levels before culminating at the national level later the following year. Two students won first and second place respectively, and the first-place winner, Addison Musto, went on to win first at Regional in Batavia and will go on to State this spring.

Lions Club member Ann Mahus has been the liaison between the school and the Lions Club for the ten years it has participated. “The contest is part of the Lions International Association and has been held for over three decades,” she explained. “In October, we received 84 entries, and to get 84 entries from students between the ages eleven and thirteen just in the Dansville area is outstanding.”

Every year, the contest has a different theme. Sponsored students may submit one entry each within specific parameters; however, the content is up to the creativity of the students. “This year’s theme was the “Journey of Peace,” shared Mahus. “The interpretation was up to the student to portray the journey of peace onto their poster. Posters are judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.”

Dansville 8th Grade art teacher, Greg McMaster has had his 8th grade students participate in the annual peace poster contest for the past ten years. “I always like to do communitybased things when I can,” said McMaster. “The Lions Club approached us, and I thought it was a good idea. Ann Mahus has been our liaison the entire time, and she is a tremendous resource for our students.”

“Academically, it functions as a kind of pre-test to see where students are at artistically entering 8th grade,” stated McMaster. “There are no right or wrong answers. It is just them, and we really push the creative aspect.”

The student participation benefits go beyond academics.

“We adjusted our curriculum to make this a part of it,” McMaster continued. “They can have success at local, regional, state and national levels. It is very local, so students

At the local level, the first place winner receives a $50 check, and the second place winner a $25 check. “It is so fun to see the kids’ reactions,” said McMaster.

“Addison Musto is the first Dansville art student to make it to this level and go on to the state competition,” said McMaster. Musto won at the local level before moving onto and winning at the district level which includes at least seven counties.

can receive recognition in town. They have grandparents, aunts and uncles and other family who are involved in the Lions Club, so they might say, ‘I saw your poster, and that was really good.’ It is a smaller pat on the back but an effective pat on the back.”

“I think it is really important that we are basing everything on our youth,” concluded Mahus. “Some of the artwork that we are seeing from these students between the ages of eleven and thirteen is amazing.”

Can Chocolate Worsen Irregular Heartbeat?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 82 years old and still very active.

I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse.

Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation?

Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day.

But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time.

Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart.

An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them.

Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about.

However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings.

Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal.

Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily.

While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic.

There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH.

HOST A SPORTS VIEWING PARTY TO REMEMBER Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts.

Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings.

Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players.

Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech.

As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television.

What’s going on in

Dansvill Rotar

Dansville Rotary Club was chartered in 1922 sponsored by the Elmira Rotary Club. We are anxiously looking forward to our 100-year celebration in two years.

President Nancy Nice has focused on Veteran Recognition during her year as President. We had a special Veteran luncheon in November for all Vets who could attend.

Our two big fundraisers each year are the food stand at the Balloon Rally over Labor Day weekend and the annual Tip Off Basketball Tournament held in early December. The Club is very grateful to all who advertise in the ad book produced for the Tournament.

Again, this year we held our Community Thanksgiving Dinner serving 450 people. It is truly a Community event with all the help we receive preparing the meals under the direction of Kent Rounsville to the many folks who come out that day to assist with all the deliveries.

Since its inception the Dansville Athletic Wall of Fame has been sponsored by the Rotary Club.

Walking the entrance hallway to the school gym the many plaques of the honored athletes can be seen. It’s a very impressive display.

Winter in the Village has the Rotary combining with Genesee Valley Penny Saver to sponsor the very popular horse drawn carriage rides where each child receives a free book as the Club continues its effort supporting literacy.

Continuing to support literacy this March the Club will spend two days reading to grades in the Primary School and at that time will leave a book for each classroom’s library.

The past couple years we have added another two mile stretch on Route 63 North from Dansville Mini Storage and two miles North. The amount of trash that accumulates in a six month period is amazing.

Don’t forget as you travel around town to take advantage of the Rotary Little Libraries. There are four different locations with one at the Town Hall, the hospital at the Cancer Center entrance, Cumminsville Park and one at the Scottsburg Community Center. Help yourself, the books are yours to take.

Saturday, February 8th, is the Club’s annual Trivia Night at the Community Center. Tables of eight for $125 is inexpensive entertainment for a few hours on a cold, winter Saturday night. Guessing by the time you read this tables might be sold out.

Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation.

Though Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has passed, it is not too late to thank the men and women who put a uniform on every day to protect and serve.

Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room in Webster. As I looked out the window, I saw a man riding his bike. On People need to seriously start picking up the poop from their dogs! I am so tired of, and disgusted by, dog poop all over the place, including my front lawn. I have a large dog that I walk every day, and I 100% pick up after him. You know who you are; stop it!

After reading about a disruptive child in a checkout line especially when the child tried to steal personal property and was messing with the cash register, I have to wonder why this cashier did not immediately call for the manager to come to the front of the store and handle this situation. That is one of the responsibilities of a store or front-end manager.

Does anyone in the [local town] know what a stop sign is or how to stop?

On Sunday, January 26, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville-Chili School District and the Monroe County Parks Department at the Churchville Elementary School. Every time garbage day is windy, my yard ends up strewn with wind-blown trash and recycling. If people simply took a little more care with how they fill and place their bins, I wouldn’t be stuck picking up and disposing of someone else’s garbage.

Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy.

Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.
