Find a location with hands-on activities. Children may grow bored of simply taking in the sights. Vacations that enable them to “do” instead of just “see” may be more enjoyable. Visit locations with “touch” museums or science centers that encourage kids to get in on the action. Historic locales may do demonstrations or reenactments of how life was in eras past. Remember to include children in the family activities and give things a try, such as helping paddle a canoe or light a fire on a camping trip.

Don’t overlook smaller theme parks. While kids may have their hearts set on traveling long distances to the widely popular theme parks, do not rule out options closer to home. Smaller parks may not have every attraction, but they do boast a variety of activities and rides that can keep children occupied for hours. Remember that amusement parks reach peak capacity when kids aren’t in school. It may be wise to vacation at off-peak times to avoid the crowds and save time spent waiting in line.

Choose places of cultural impact. Family vacations do not need to be limited to riding roller coasters. Children can learn a lot and take away lasting memories from vacations that open children’s eyes to something new. Visiting a large city, such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, or Atlanta, can be a vacation in education. Metro

Family Friendly Vacation

Old-fashioned family vacations are a treasured art of many family traditions. Such excursions may be the only time families get to spend any extended time together.

Families have plenty of vacation prospects at their disposal. If this is the year your brood bucks tradition and tries a new vacation destination, explore these family-friendly possibilities.

areas boast attractions that can excite children, including tall buildings, museums and public transportation hubs just waiting to be explored. Families venturing internationally may want to see the cultural centers of Rome, London or Athens.

Consider a family resort. If a beachside adventure is your family’s idea of the perfect retreat, explore your options with regard to family resorts. For an all-inclusive price, these resorts may couple food packages with accommodations and activities to keep families happy. Check with popular hotel chains to see if they offer all-inclusive packages in destinations your family wants to visit. Parents who are pressed for time o en find all-inclusive resorts offer great values and don’t involve too much advanced planning.

Go off the grid. A memorable family vacation does not have to be spent in a the heart of it all. Booking a campsite location and then spending a few days in the great outdoors allows families to get back to nature while enjoying an inexpensive vacation. Families can camp in lodges or basic cabins, or rough it outside in a tent. Some families enjoy the benefits of renting an RV and visiting various campsites on their vacations. Let the activities unfold as you explore different trails and backroads along the way.

Summer Heat Safety

Before we know it, we’ll need to move into hot weather mode and take steps to stay healthy and safe in the heat. For me, most important is keeping the house cool, since that’s where I spend most of my time. The air conditioning will be set at 76 to 78 degrees, depending on the humidity.

Very soon I’ll need to put up the insulated sun-blocking blackout drapes on the sunny side of the living room where the afternoon heat can bake the outside wall. Each morning I’ll close those drapes before the sun moves around to that side of the house.

Next on my daily list will be to fill my water bottles -- a half-dozen 8-ounce bottles that I can periodically grab during the day. With the little bottles, it’s easy to keep track of how much hydration I’m getting.

But we can’t always stay home. If you have to go out in the heat, wear light, loose clothing and a hat with a wide brim.

Ask your doctor to clarify what your water intake should be during the summer.

Keep an eye on the weather news so you’ll know what to expect. Ask your town if they’ve set up any cooling centers, or head to the library or mall during the hottest part of the day.

Keep track of how you feel in the summer heat. If you have weakness, nausea, dizziness or headache, it could be heat exhaustion or even lead to heat stroke. Get help -- don’t delay.

If you’re afraid to run the air conditioner for fear it will increase your electric bill, see if you can get some financial help from LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) at 866674-6327. Churches and town halls are other possible sources of assistance. (c) 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Community minded: I have been a member of the Honeoye Chamber of Commerce, Honeoye Junior Baseball, Honeoye Lake Rotary Club, and worked with other community groups and organizations.

• Fiscally responsible: I have worked to understand the Town Budget process and I work diligently trying to keep each budget fair to the Taxpayers while providing for the Town's needs.

• I always have and always will listen to the concerns and wishes of the People of e Town of Richmond.

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Sudden and dramatic weight loss causes concern in woman

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old woman with a weight problem. My weight used to fluctuate from 130-160 pounds. Then I started to notice that I was losing weight slowly but surely on my regular diet. My doctor did not have an answer. Soon I got down to 95 pounds. My family urges me to eat more than I feel comfortable with. I weigh 104 pounds today.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this dramatic weight loss? I still struggle with keeping my weight up to 105 pounds! My height is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, and I really am quite “bony.” Thank you for any help you can give me. -- A.S.

Q. A.

ANSWER: When we see dramatic weight loss like yours (greater than 5% to 10% is generally considered important, and yours is greater than 30%), we think about a few important categories. Of course, some of these aren’t appropriate for you, but I want to give you an idea of what goes through a doctor’s head when we see a person with this much weight loss:

Unfortunately, cancer tends to leap to our minds, even though it’s not the most common cause. A full-body scan isn’t usually indicated or helpful. Instead, a careful and focused history and physical exam will often give clues as to whether cancer is likely.

In addition, doctors want to make sure that the person is up-to-date with their age-appropriate screenings, which include breast and colon cancer screenings in a 75-year-old woman. In a person with a history of smoking, I always consider lung cancer and will usually order at least an X-ray.

A condition that is commonly forgotten when thinking about weight loss is the inability to absorb food properly, and celiac disease is the most common disease to cause this. Diarrhea is common but not always present with this condition. People can lose calories through their kidneys as well, and diabetes is by far the most likely cause of this, although there are rare other causes. Excess urination is universal in uncontrolled diabetes but can be minimized by the patient. Endocrine disorders, especially hyperthyroidism, often cause weight loss. Mental health issues, especially depression, are very commonly associated with weight loss. Anorexia nervosa is uncommon but not impossible in older adults.

Any serious disease -- heart, lung, liver and others -- can also cause serious weight loss. Some medications can cause unexpected weight loss as well. Chronic infections are another important cause of unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis, HIV and viral hepatitis are the most common, but there are many uncommon and rare infections.

As adults get older, some degree of weight loss is expected, but it is the degree and speed of the weight loss that needs to be considered when deciding whether this is a serious medical issue. Since it sounds like your weight loss has come on quickly, this is more concerning but a bit less so since it seems like it has stabilized. Still, were you my patient, I’d recommend a more thorough evaluation than it sounds like you’ve had.

I learned a valuable lesson after I made a home visit to give a patient a thorough medical evaluation about her continued weight loss. I found that she had inadequate food at home and was too embarrassed to tell me.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

pet place

Hi, I’m Frankie. My mother just adopted me from the shelter. I love eating treats, looking out the window, playing with my toys at night and sleeping in my fort.

SILVER LAKE SUMMER SAFETY FOR PETS

Silver Lake is a gem in the Perry area, and it’s not just people who love it, plenty of dogs take a splashy swim during the hotter months. If your dog’s a water lover, make sure they’re wearing a collar with up-to-date tags and that they stay within sight. Be cautious about blue-green algae blooms, which can be dangerous to dogs. After swimming, give them a quick rinse to remove residue and dry them off to avoid hot spots. A lake day can be a great day... with a few simple precautions!

Ra lesnakes are a risk for dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I moved from a suburb to the mountains a couple of months ago,and while my dogs are thrilled to have several acres to run free on, I’m terrified that they will be bitten by rattlesnakes. A neighbor said that they are plentiful out here. How can I prevent this, and what do I do if they get bitten? -- Larry in Tennessee

DEAR LARRY: While there is always a risk of a dog getting injured by something out in the countryside, it’s important not to let fear get the best of you. Instead, focus on prevention. Here are some of the things you can do to minimize their overall risk of injury -- from snakes and other potential risks.

-- Train your dogs to come when you call them; if your property is big enough that they run out of sight, train them to respond to a whistle, which carries much farther.

-- Rattlesnakes (and other snakes) hang out in messy debris piles, wood stacks and crevices with overhangs. They stay out of sight (they’re much more afraid of you and your dogs) unless they are threatened. Clear debris piles off of your property, and stack your firewood on a raised platform, at least 5 feet from your home’s foundation.

-- If your dogs consistently run to one location on your property, follow them and find out what’s so interesting. An animal lair or deer run can be very interesting to dogs, but the same location can attract bigger predators.

-- Consider fencing in a half-acre or acre behind your house and keep your dogs within the fence; you’ll be able to monitor them better and control the space, so critters don’t come in.

HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME VIBE

Reading: Individuals who have long wanted to read more should know that they’re not alone. A 2019 survey commissioned by the reading subscription service Scribd and conducted by The Harris Poll found that 35 percent of respondents wished they could read more. Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. But people who aspire to read more can take a book to the beach or out on the deck on a warm afternoon or evening. Leave the smartphone inside so you can relax and read distraction-free.

TIRES: ROTATE AND RELAX

Most car owners know to check tire pressure, but rotating your tires every 5,000–7,000 miles ensures more even wear, a smoother ride, and longer life for all four. It’s a simple thing that’s often forgotten and in the summer, with more driving and warmer pavement, it’s especially important.

Co assionate Car Care

I was in a collision (safe and well, all repairable!), that really set me back and felt like a big hurdle to get through. A huge shout out to Kolb Family Automotive for taking so much stress away! Dan and the team stayed on top of everything and made it completely seamless. They answered my many questions with genuine respect and were incredibly kind–a complete shocker based on other car shop experiences I’ve had before. With kindness from day one, they truly reflected the personal touch of a family owned business. Thank you for being honest, professional, and quick to get me back on the road!

At [local park] today, an off leash dog ran up to my dog and jumped up on me. Its owner yelled, “He’s friendly!” So what? You don’t know if MY dog is friendly or reactive. In public places, LEASH YOUR DOG. If you want your dog to run around off-leash, rent or build your own PRIVATE fenced in area. My dog was small, but next time your off leash dog approaches a less friendly, large dog, it could be really bad, violent, or even deadly. It’s common sense, be respectful of the park, and respectful of your community. You and your dog ain’t special. Next time I’m reporting you to the cop who was sitting across the street.

Appalling state of [local business] grounds

On a recent visit to [local business], I was very disturbed at the state of the outside of the building. Decorative trees that should be trimmed and shaped each year are overgrown. The trees are taller than the building and encroaching on each other to make it look like a jungle. Where shrubs were once planted to enhance the entrance way is now filled with only weeds and dried dirt. What would it take to have a company come in twice a year and trim trees and shrubs and do some clean up? The [local business] should be ashamed at the impression their patrons get when stopping in or driving past one of the most visited facilities in the [local town].

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL

Go overboard on gifts. The idea isn’t to buy Dad’s love, but Dad’s first Father’s Day is a truly unique time. On behalf of his firstborn, purchase a few different gifts - those items that he has been interested in buying but has resisted in favor of saving money for new onesies and burp cloths. Or invest in one special event gift, such as tickets to a game to see his favorite team or a concert to catch a favorite band.

Naples Commemorates the Connection Between Local Resident, William “Billy” Marks, and Frederick Douglass With a Community Potluck

“The slavery contest was fierce and bloody. The outcome, however, is worth all it cost. We truly are a great nation where the term freedom means all that it implies.”
W.R. Marks

William Marks, known as “Uncle Billy” to everyone in the Naples area who knew him during the 1800s, was born on January 17, 1814, in Burlington, CT and died in Naples on August 29, 1879. He was one Neapolitan who truly le his mark on Naples.

William “Billy” Marks overcame a severe childhood illness that le him slightly crippled, refusing to let it hold him back. As a young man, he became a successful and wellliked peddler, traveling through New York and Pennsylvania selling quality goods with honesty and charm. In the 1830s, his travels brought him to Naples, where he met and fell in love with Emily Catherine Holcomb, a descendant of early Massachusetts settlers. ey married in 1839, and at Emily’s urging, Billy settled in Naples, briefly partnering in a general store before striking out on his own.

Using his skills as a salesman, carpenter, and leader, Marks built a furniture store and his home on Main and Mechanic Streets. According to Robert J. Vierhile, who wrote a series of essays for the Naples Historical Society in the 1980s, “Billy Marks loved Naples, and Naples loved Billy.”

Marks became a trusted figure in town, running the area’s first formal funeral parlor, building coffins and providing affordable funeral services. “Marks’s two teams of fine horses were the undertaking Cadillacs of the time,” Vierhile wrote. During the Civil War, Marks even issued his own local script money, widely accepted when cash was scarce. By 1850, Marks was Naples’ most respected merchant, civic leader, and a devoted Christian Methodist.

A passionate abolitionist and devout Christian, Billy Marks strongly opposed slavery and couldn’t understand why anyone would condone selling a human being or why fellow Christians wouldn’t condemn the government for allowing it. When Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850, making it a federal crime to aid fugitive slaves, Marks was outraged and could not sit idly by. Marks joined the Western NY abolitionist movement and was struck by Frederick Douglass’ lectures and writings on the injustice, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery.

Marks invited Douglass to speak in Naples, but all the town’s Christian ministers declined requests to hold the speech in their churches, not wanting to get involved in abolition. So Marks built a temporary auditorium, “a huge platform in front of his home on One Mechanic Street, put chairs in his yard, provided free refreshments,” as Vierhile described, and in July 1852, over 300 Naples residents “came to hear Frederick Douglass... talk about the evils and un-Christian aspects of slavery.”

EMILY AND WILLIAM MARKS COLLECTION OF THE NAPLES HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A erward, Marks established a secret Naples “station” on the Underground Railroad and is credited with helping transport over 600 fugitive former slaves, known as “passengers,” to freedom in Canada, despite the risk of fines and imprisonment. His love for people fueled his courageous efforts. He risked his family, business, and future to help the former slaves.

In a 1909 letter submitted by Billy’s son, W.R. Marks – published in the Naples News, archived by the Naples Historical Society, and cited in Vierhile’s essays – the younger Marks reflects on his father’s devotion to the cause, citing simple morality and human decency against enslaving other humans. e elder Marks even used his hearse to conceal “passengers” in need of quick transport. e younger Marks recalled hosting notable abolitionists including Frederick Douglass, Wells Bruce, and Bishop Logan, and sheltering as many as 25 fugitives at one time in their home and property. As W.R. Marks wrote, “ e slavery contest was fierce and bloody. e outcome, however, is worth all it cost. We truly are a great nation where the term freedom means all that it implies. Naples had her full share in that conflict.”

Many residents back then didn’t know how much Billy Marks did for the Underground Railroad. Many still

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER

Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.
