HOW TO DETERMINE

IF IT’S

TIME TO DOWNSIZE

Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.

When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition.

For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape.

Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

Minimum purchase $1,500. There is a promotional fee of $150 for this transaction to qualified buyers.

Put that backyard grill to good use. Plan meals around outdoor cooking so the ambient heat will stay outside and you will not have to turn on the oven or the stovetop. Include side dishes, such as salads, fresh vegetables and fruits or gazpacho, that can be served cold. If you must heat something indoors, try doing so in the microwave.

CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY

(NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awareness about the benefits of saving energy today, tomorrow, and for good.

1. TELEVISION: “The Simpsons” first appeared as a short on which TV show?

2. GEOGRAPHY: What is the distance between mainland Russia (Siberia) and mainland United States (Alaska)?

3. GAMES: What is the highest score you can achieve in one frame of bowling?

4. MYTHOLOGY: What is the Roman god of the sea called?

5. SCIENCE: What are the only letters that don’t currently appear in the Periodic Table?

6. MOVIES: Which animated movie’s tagline is “Escape or die frying”?

7. LITERATURE: The Republic of Gilead appears in which 1980s novel?

The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about $575—on your household energy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs work with electric utilities to provide low-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. For more information visit www.energystar.gov/SaveForGood.

8. FOOD & DRINK: Which spice is often praised for its antiinflammatory properties?

9. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: In which country did Cirque du Soleil originate?

10. LANGUAGE: What is glossolalia?

10. The ability to speak in a previously unknown language, also known as speaking in tongues.

Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save nearly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions. ©

Phantom pregnancy in dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside.

He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York

DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.

Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.

The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.

PERSONAL AD

I am searching for SWF over 45. A young Olivia Newton John look-alike because she is beautiful and a great singer, such as the 1980 song “Magic”. e same year, Johnny Lee, a country singer sang “Looking For Love In All e Wrong Places”. Check out the lyrics on the internet- official music video HD under 4 minutes.

My female sidekick for nearly 3 decades passed away last year due to a medical condition. She had a pretty smile and a good heart. She answered an ad that I placed in this Penny Saver in 1995 and right off the bat everything went well.

I’m looking for a pretty lady with a nice smile, non-smoker, good health, no kids, vegetarian, enjoys 70’s & 80’s romantic music like Olivia Newton John and Karen Carpenter.

If I cannot find a local lady, I will invest resources to the Rochester area. If this ad strikes an interest, feel free to email me your name, contact number, and a photo (optional), that would be great. By the way, I put a lot of time and thought into this and how I feel being I’m unique, humorous and chatty. GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS

Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

Learn the Available Options for Dealing With Kidney Stones &body mind

DEAR DR. ROACH: IjustfoundoutthatIhaveakidney stone. I’m 77 years old, and I don’t want to deal with it. I’ve heard of potassium citrate and pulverizing it with sound waves. Are these options? -- J.M.

ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones.

Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).

Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).

My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.

Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.

If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions

SHARING PLANTS & RESTORING HISTORY:

Digging Up the Cleveland House Museum Gardens

“What I like to tell everybody, to put in perspective, is it was built when George Washington was president, so it’s seen a lot of things in its history, and it has survived.”
- TRISH LAMBIASE

Equipped with a garden spade and containers, Naples area residents gathered outside the Cleveland House Museum on a May Saturday to dig up the gardens around the house. From black-eyed Susans and tulips to hellebore and peonies, anyone who walked away from the museum that day took a piece of Naples history with them.

e Naples Historical Society hosted the event, with the goal of removing all the flower beds closest to the house’s foundation. At more than 200 years old, Cleveland House’s exterior is overdue for some much-needed TLC. When crews break ground on the project (most likely this fall), they’ll remove two centuries of soil and leaf buildup rotting the historical house’s lower boards.

According to Trish Lambiase, president of the Naples Historical Society, the last family to own the property was between 2002–2004, and then it was rented out for a while. When the last people living there moved out around 2007, it had a stint as an antique store. In 2018, the Naples Historical Society purchased the house and opened it as a museum in 2019, featuring revolving exhibits on Naples history.

e museum first received a grant in 2022 for a foundation analysis, but the pandemic slowed progress. en, the historical society sold the 1838 Carriage House, with the proceeds dedicated to restoring the Cleveland House.

Built in 1794 by Revolutionary War veteran Ephraim Cleveland, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, cited as exhibiting “distinctive period features.”

Once soil is pulled back from the foundation, a stone mason will analyze it. e plan is to install a French drain to draw moisture away from the foundation, and gravel will be laid around the house. Lambiase says, “Of course, in order to excavate around the house, we’ve had to pull up the beautiful plants around the house. at’s why we had our plant give and take.”

On the day of the event, attendees could take as many bulbs or flowers as they wanted. Many donated, and the historical society raising $250 earmarked for replanting the gardens. “ e gardens can’t be put back around the house, but we’ll have some other beautiful gardens,” Lambiase says.

Jun Liu, the house’s official gardener, was also on hand to answer questions about maintenance and care. In the six years the historical society has owned the building, Liu has planted many native plants and helped with garden design, beautifying the property.

Although the gardener insists Lambiase is an active green thumb herself, Liu, who works as a garden designer and gardener at e Maxfield Inn in Naples, o en focuses on the wild gardens. She chooses low-maintenance plants native to the area that are easy to take care of and are usually ones that will spread on their own and fill out the gardens.

Share your original stories about local heroes, community events, school achievements, or hidden gems–email your story idea to hometown@gvpennysaver.com! READ MORE STORIES AT GVPENNYSAVER.COM

Given her loving dedication to garden landscaping, one might think Liu would be sad to see some of the gardens go, but she enjoys sharing, saying,

“I think the point of a public garden is you can share, whether it’s the garden itself or knowledge, learning from others. The sharing is a very rewarding process.”

According to Lambiase, Cleveland House was one of the earliest frame houses built in Naples—and the goal is to preserve it for another 200 years.

Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.

Fairport ursday evening concerts here! Yea!

Perinton Concert Band played wonderfully well for our first of the season. Thank you to a large group of fine musicians whom we appreciate. That’s the Brighter side.. but perhaps the few people who stand on the sidewalk adjacent to the concert goers who TALK most of the time might consider moving away from that part of the sidewalk or, stay, stop talking and find you will enjoy and appreciate music!

Brighter Vent

When you purchase takeout food, you are responsible for proper disposal. Why do you think it is okay to drop it in a parking area or someone’s yard? Why do you expect someone else to pick up after you? I’m tired of finding smelly packages of trash as well as cigarette butts and beer cans. Please take care of your own trash.

Bridge Closure

The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The peace of avoiding the daily news

One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.

At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.

Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.

That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.

Here are a few things I accomplished:

I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch.

A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours. This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.

I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.

That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted. If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time. ~John Lubbock, “Recreation,” The Use of Life, 1894

TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING

Tent size and location - Calculate how many people will be on the camping trip and how much space they will need to rest comfortably. Purchase or rent a tent that will provide enough space. Multiple tents also can be used if the goal is to separate family members. The next consideration is where to set up camp. Look for a level area that is relatively free from debris. Clear away any rocks and twigs, as debris under the tent can damage it and make it harder to fall asleep. Families may want to camp a short distance from restroom facilities if they are available, which will make it easier for the midnight bathroom breaks that inevitably crop up.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

April 26, 2025

Canandaigua/Avon: Mary Chest, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in Canandaigua, NY, at the age of 86.

Born in Paul Smiths, NY, to the late Lawrence William Goodrow and Eveline Stella Delametter, Mary was predeceased by her husband, James Chest, and her daughter, Catherine Margaret Bement. She is survived by her children, Michele (Barry) Edwards, Michael Bement, Mary Lynne Bement and Matthew (Stacy) Bement; grandchildren, Natalie (Noah) Klebanoff, Nicholas Edwards (Karlie Kellstrom), Delaney Bement (Jack Whitt) and Sophie Bement; greatgrandchildren, Graham and Griffin Klebanoff; along with cherished nephews, a niece and friends.

A lifelong learner and creative spirit, she was the proud owner of e Pincushion, a local fabric store, and worked in quality control at General Foods–Birds Eye, as well as a bookkeeper for the Avon Town Clerk’s office.

She found joy in simple pleasures—gardening, sewing, cooking, walking, birdwatching, and playing euchre. She was an avid reader and remained engaged with the world around her.

Mary spent her final months in the care of Light Hill in Canandaigua, where she was surrounded by dignity, compassion and love.

A joint Celebration of Life for Mary and her daughter, Catherine Bement will be held on ursday, July 10, 2025, from 1 to 4 pm, at the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum, 295 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY. Parking is available via the main entrance off Granger Street.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.
