Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

MOTHER’S DAY WRITING CONTEST WINNER

“Having a mom like ours has been an adventure! From our cross-country vacations in the car as a family to our school functions, church activities and holiday parties, mom was always there for us. She instilled a pride in being part of our family as well as a confidence in developing friendships outside the family. She enjoyed participating in everything that she could. But even with all of these exciting things in our life, one of my favorite memories is of a summer day when my dad would come home from work and we would all relax and swim in our pool together and afterwards we would enjoy mom’s delicious meatballs and pasta. Even though she is now 89 going on 90 soon she is still managing to serve up her famous pasta dinner to many of us with an extra helping of love on the side! Happy Mother’s Day, Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma. We love you.” g thi afterwards we would to serve up a dma

While spring and summer months bring the household excitement, the couple are also driven to continue learning about homesteading while educating others. at’s one reason they started a Facebook group dedicated to sharing information and goods called the Homesteading Produce and Goods Exchange. e group allows area homesteaders and avid gardeners to exchange not only tips, but goods as well. Knowing that every year they grow more food than they need and with prices currently high, Read wanted a place where people could come together and exchange produce, and since then the group has slowly grown.

Mickelsen says, “With that group, we’re trying to educate people on growing their own food to be self-sustaining. We want people to get back to their roots, pun intended.” He believes that although working from the land is part of our heritage, people today are so busy, explaining, “We want to empower people and educate people on... how to grow a garden. Whether you have a small space and can only use grow containers or a large space with raised gardens, we want to help people.”

Homesteading is having a moment right now, as people return to the land. Homesteaders share on social media, and there’s even a Homesteaders of America Conference

flavor and colors of food is much more vibrant, and the taste is so much different than what you get in the store,” he says.

Another benefit of working outdoors in the soil has been stress relief. Mickelsen says, “When you get your hands in the soil and are working, it releases serotonin. Yes, it’s good physically to keep in shape and to move around, but there’s also a mental and psychological component to gardening and homesteading.”

Whether on a large scale or small scale, homesteading can mean different things for different people. For Read and Mickelsen, it means living a life close to nature, sustainability, and raising their children to understand how to cultivate land for future generations.

Read says the children “learn by watching, so when they see you working hard, they see you striving; it’s a connection between you and them. It’s something they can pass down to their children, it’s knowledge, it’s a socializing event, and it gives them knowledge they can keep with them as adults and pursue and teach others. It gives the kids an opportunity to be out in the dirt, play with the bugs, and see the fruits of their labor.”

ere are good people out there!

I wrote a check to give to my child’s teacher. I don’t know whether it fell out of her pocket on the bike ride to school, in front of the school, in the school, or in the garbage with scrap paper as she thought it had, but thank you to whatever good human put it in my mailbox. It’s not a large sum of money, but anyone could’ve written cash and cashed it. Instead, it was put in my mailbox carefully. Thank you! We all need a little reminder that there are good people and this was mine for today.

E oy your breakfast

We were out to eat at a smaller, local restaurant for breakfast this past weekend when a large group coming in needed a few of the tables together. While they were in the process of moving things around a older couple came in to eat and was told they didn’t have a table to seat them. That’s when a younger couple sitting at a table in the middle offered up their available 2 seats to the older couple to all enjoy breakfast together. Truly a sweet sentiment.

Why is it that most gas pump handles don’t have the little hook that catches the handle so that the pump continues to fill your car without you having to hold the handle? Spring is finally upon us, but during the Winter months I actually seek out the pumps (and I know where they are) that have this handle hook! Once you have the handle ‘hooked,’ you can return to the warmth and safety of your car until your tank is full. So simple an idea ... and why do you need my zip code and bonus card number and want to know if I want a car wash... a waste of my time.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like basic kindness doesn’t exist around here anymore? I’ve noticed lately that so many parents seem to avoid eye contact, rarely say hello, or even acknowledge each other - and I’m genuinely curious why. No smiles, no ‘excuse me,’ no ‘thank you.’ It feels cold and honestly, it’s sad.

I’m not posting this to point fingers or judge anyone - life is busy and we all have our moments. Our kids are watching. They see how we treat each other. But we can do better for each other and for our children. Have you felt this too? How can we help bring back a bit more kindness and warmth into our day-to-day interactions?

A Tribute To My Dear

Friend “Fouad Alshehabi”

For the good and decent person that you were, I will always remember you. Your departure from this world was so sudden and unexpected.

I knew you as my little brother but you called me mama. I cannot tell you what an honor it was to be known by this endearment.

We came together in a most unusual way, you a deaf person, being bullied and harassed by another tenant showing ignorance and prejudice, ugly words, but if it weren’t for them, I never would have known you and your wife so closely, and the good people you were.

Good can come from evil. I only wish that the powerful people would have understood the importance of doing “ e Right ing” to protect you in our courts from those who would weaponize it, to fabricate tales, where facts didn’t matter.

Witnesses need to be heard and questioned by lawyers for an accurate defense, unfortunately, that did not happen, and when the appropriate interpreter for the deaf is not used by your lawyer, an inappropriate plea deal was the solution.

I came forward as a witness for you, to reveal the lies with facts along with hard evidence to invalidate the case altogether. But nobody did anything that should’ve done something, someone should’ve seriously defended you.

I was unable to remove the stains against you while you were still with us, but at least now you know, I never gave up trying to clear your name.

I miss you. I miss you more than I realized I could, every day, I think of you. e beauty that you provided for our building will be noticeably missed this summer. An adornment gravesite so abundant with life, created by your family along with the others who knew you, who honored and respected you so highly did attend to this lovely sight, as it was so visibly seen.

I know your memory will live on within our hearts. May you live forever, little brother, Vickie Ellers

Dry Cough Persisting for a Decade Might Indicate Asthma &body mind

Q.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a dry cough that’s been going on for about 13-14 years. I’m a healthy 62-year-old and read that it is called “cough variant asthma.” I would like to know more about this but can’t really find anything about it, except that it will eventually get worse if it’s not treated. I was checked twice in the past 15 years for asthma, and I wasn’t diagnosed. However, I’ve not been diagnosed with any acid reflux or postnasal drip. -- D.S.

ANSWER:Although most people think that asthma causes wheezing, cough is a very common symptom of asthma. You’ve named the two other most common causes of chronic cough: acid reflux and postnasal drip. It can be tricky to make these diagnoses. Very often, primary care doctors will do a “therapeutic trial” that involves a short-term prescription to see if there is improvement. For acid reflux, it might be an H2 blocker like famotidine (Pepcid), which acts faster than a proton-pump inhibitor like omeprazole. This is often faster, easier, and much less expensive than a diagnostic test like a 24-hour pH monitor (the gold-standard diagnostic test).

Similarly, a physician might give a trial of asthma medication (such as a bronchodilator like albuterol) to see if it stops the cough, rather than immediately testing a person’s pulmonary function with a trial of bronchodilators -- a standard diagnostic test for asthma. Sometimes a pulmonologist will order a “methacholine challenge test” where an airway irritant is given at very low doses to see if it will trigger an asthma response in the lung. Postnasal drip can sometimes be confirmed by a physical exam, but a fiberoptic laryngoscopy is seldom necessary to make the diagnosis. When therapeutic trials are not helpful, diagnostic tests become necessary. I personally order lung testing before and after bronchodilators on all patients with suspected asthma, as the tests give important information beyond a diagnosis. Lung testing can be used to follow the course of the disease and identify whether there may be a separate problem in addition to asthma.

Looking ahead to Memorial Day, we’re grateful for the brave individuals who gave all. ank you.

MOTHER’S DAY

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

polltime

US President Wilson proclaimed the first Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May in 1914 following the campaign of Anna Jarvis, who sought to honor her late mother’s legacy of community service and peace/unity promotion. 111 years later, Mother’s Day (May 11th this year) remains a holiday to celebrate and/or honor mothers. How do you celebrate Mother's Day?

- I host or go out for a meal

- I send flowers or a thoughtful gift to the mother/s in my life

- I spend quality time either with my mom or doing something she likes to do

- I write a heartfelt card, letter, or poem to express my love and gratitude

- I help her with chores she doesn’t like to do

- Some or all of the above

- None of the above
