Map out your sales. Look at advertisements and plot which sales you plan to visit. If you have specific items in mind to buy, you may have to visit several sales before you find what you need.
Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.
Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.
When looking for a new hobby, adults may find that activities that suit their personalities tend to be the most rewarding.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What advice do you have for the treatment of gallstones? -- N.W.
ANSWER: Gallstones are common (6% of men and 9% of women will get one over a lifetime) and are mostly composed of bile salts and cholesterol. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and the risk of complications. Depending on the size and composition of a person’s gallstones, there are different therapies available.
Themostcommontreatmentforsymptomaticgallstonesissurgery. Surgery is highly effective, although there are complications such as bleeding, infection and leaks. About 10% of people will develop diarrhea after surgery, which tends to get better over weeks to months but sometimes requires treatment with a bileacid-binding drug like cholestyramine. Surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means faster healing times.
For people who are not good candidates for surgery (such as those with significant medical illnesses) or people who do not want surgery, there are other options. Medications given by mouth, such as ursodiol (Actigall), can dissolve gallstones, but this can take a long time, usually several years. People with smaller stones that are mostly made of cholesterol can be good candidates for this treatment. However, it is not 100% effective.
Another option is a tube placed into the gallbladder through the abdominal wall to drain bile, which is also sometimes done to remove stones, but I have seldom seen it done. Similarly, shockwave treatment, which is commonly used for kidney stones, is rarely used but can be a reasonable option in people with only one or two stones.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, I had my 9-year-old, part-poodle/Maltese dog’s teeth cleaned. The vet had to pull two teeth as well. Since this was done, “Scoobie” seems to make an odd noise as he is breathing. I feel like this is due to the tube they put down his throat as they cleaned his teeth. When I got him home, he had a hacking cough, which subsided about three days later. But the noise he makes when breathing continues. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, though. I like our vet a lot and hate to question him, so hopefully you can help me out or let me know what I could ask the vet. -- Valeeta R., Montgomery, Alabama
DEAR VALEETA: A good veterinarian will not mind extra questions from a pet owner,so I encourage you to contact your vet and describe Scoobie’s breathing noise. In fact, you should go ahead and bring Scoobie in to have thevetcheckoutthenoiseinpersonsohecanruleoutany serious issues.Pets that are put under general anesthesia for certain procedures (such as the tooth scaling Scoobie had) can develop complications afterward, ranging from stress reactions to major health emergencies. Don’t be worried about bothering your vet -- your dog’s health is the most important thing here.
Ask lots of questions, and insist on straightforward answers from the vet -- not answers designed just to make you feel better. If afterward you feel that you didn’t receive satisfactory answers, or if Scoobie doesn’t improve, take your dog to another vet for a second opinion.

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

My Friend, Linda by Sylva Palmer
I never had a sister, Only brothers and my sons. Although I love them dearly ey weren’t into “girlie” fun.
A lady moved in down the street, So I took a little walk.
She turned out to be a friendly sort
And we began to talk and talk.
roughout the years our bond grew strong, And we discussed all sorts of things. We talked of books and TV shows, Politics, weather and our offspring.
We sometimes got in trouble, Like getting lost out in the woods; Or trying on some gaudy hats, Laughing louder than we should.
Our coffee time was sacred. Nothing stopped our daily meet. During COVID we set up outside Observing a safe six feet.
But tragically my friend got sick. She fought for four long years. is month will mark a year gone by, And I still can’t stop the tears.
She was my friend, my confidant, My sounding board, “my sister,” And as long as I live on I know I’ll always miss her.
Rest in peace, Linda

BY F. LEE JOHNSON, ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN 2010, EDITED FOR SPACE BY AUTHOR’S SUBMISSION
“The Future of our country will always be sure when there are men such as these to give their lives to preserve it.”
PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY
To the memory of the gallant men who served their country aboard the United States Submarine (USS) resher (SSN-593) fi y years ago, President John F Kennedy, said, “ e Future of our country will always be sure when there are men such as these to give their lives to preserve it.”
No one close to the submarine service can reflect on the tragic time of early April 10, 1963 without again experiencing the shock and sadness we felt upon learning of the resher’s loss. Time has added other awareness to these emotions: the submariners and those closely associated with this branch of service today know feelings of kinship, pride, gratitude, and profound respect for the brave that ill-fated day.
For us they live... as individuals each will be and are missed by their families and loved ones. We cherish the memories of the men... they are very real in memory and spirit. We shall not forget all 129 of them, 16 officers, 96 crew, and 17 civilian technicians.
e resher was the lead ship of the world’s most advanced class of nuclear-powered attack submarines. Named for the shark of the same name, the resher was endowed with significant advanced sonar equipment in noise reduction and fire control equipment. She was designed to operate deeper and more silently than any of her predecessors to render detection by an enemy extremely difficult. Her motto was “Silent Strength.”
On the morning of April 9, 1963, resher put out to sea to conduct sea trials, and the next morning, some 220 miles off Boston, MA, something went terribly wrong. resher sank to test depth and was unable to get a positive (buoyancy) up angle to surface. As she sank deeper and deeper, unable to surface, she imploded and sank to her watery grave 1-1/2 miles to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. e Navy held a court of inquiry to determine the cause of this tragedy, and while some speculations surfaced, no one knows the cause to this day.
I pay tribute to my wife’s brother, John Francis (Jack) Hudson, Enginemen 1st Class, who died in the resher submarine that day:
Jack, son of Milton I and Mary E Hudson, was born February 11, 1935, in Cli on Springs. He graduated from Red Jacket Central High School in Manchester in 1954. An Eagle Scout, Jack enlisted in the US Navy along with four classmates in July 1954 in Buffalo, received basic training at Bainsbridge, Maryland Company 197 – 13th Battalion 1st regiment, and attended Class A Enginemen School at Great Lakes, Illinois.
Jack had a tour of duty aboard the submarine tender USS Bushnell (AS515) in Key West, FL. Later, he was assigned to the submarine tender USS Fulton (AS11) at State Pier, New London, CT. In September 1957, the Fulton participated in the NATO exercise “Strike Back,” docked in Rothesay, Scotland for submarine support.
Jack volunteered for submarine service. He attended sub school in Groton, CT, Class 155, section 216, and graduated in May 1958. Jack’s first submarine assignment was the diesel-electric USS Jallao SS368. Jack served as an Engineman 2nd Class (EN2) and qualified for his silver Dolphins on board Jallao.
In February 1961, Jack put in for and was accepted into nuclear school. A er graduation, he was assigned to the crew of the (nuclear-powered) USS resher. Jack earned the Navy’s Good Conduct metals twice, National Defense Service Metal, and a Letter of Commendation from the commanding officer of the resher. While on resher, Jack received Engineman 1st Class (EN1) rating.
I met Jack while we both worked aboard the Jallao, and learned we only lived eight miles apart back home (I’m from Phelps). We rode home together on weekend passes, and I later married Jack’s sister, Margaret.
Jack le behind wife, Ronna Lee Hudson of Naples, a son Wayne Payl from his first marriage, his mother, Mary E Hudson of Newark, two sisters, Patricia Merriam of Falmouth, MA and Margaret Johnson of Phelps. His father Milton I predeceased Jack, and his mother and sister Pat have joined Jack in 2000 and 2010, respectively.
It’s hard to think that it was over sixty years we said goodbye to Jack and his shipmates. “Sailors, rest your oars.”

The higher up in altitude a person goes, the stronger the sun’s rays become. Therefore, sun exposure in the mountains can be more dangerous than exposure at sea level.
One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone.
Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

A heartfelt thank you to the parking and office staff of the Orleans County 4H Fair for their courtesy, thoughtfulness, and follow-up. Our precious granddaughter lost an item that is very special to her at a few levels within minutes of walking away from our parked car. With heavy hearts, we went to the fair office to inquire about lost and found, and our number and the item description were taken with a promise to call if it was found. As it is a high demand item, we expected nothing, but to my surprise, I got a call two days later that it had been found! A very, very special thank you again to fair staff for follow-through and honesty. These lessons are more valuable than the item itself and I thank you all for being a part of the village it takes to raise a child right! We also had a wonderful time at the fair! Great job, as always!
I am so grateful for our libraries. I have the fondest memories of weekly trips to the library with my father. Now I can share that experience with my grandson. We attend the weekly story time at two libraries. He is able to enjoy fabulous stories, engage in craft projects, and/or dance and play with other children. Of course, libraries offer more than that. They provide internet access for those who do not have it at home. They provide employment resources for those looking for jobs. They offer a variety of fun classes and build community. Of course, you can always find a good read there. Our communities are enriched by our libraries. And thank you to the librarians who make it happen.
I live in [local town] on a side street. The complex behind me thinks it’s okay to use my driveway and lawn to cut through to their apartment. If that isn’t bad enough, dropping trash along the way. Then it’s all hours of the day and night. I hear their convos on phone with each other and their loud music. If you live in [town] please think of your neighbors.
Becauseyouareextraspecial?Tothepeople who broke open the recycling receptacle on SaturdayJuly5thanddumpedtheirgarbage in. There are cameras on the DPW building!! This is a free service for our community and was closed due to the holiday weekend with signs posted in advance. The kind gentleman that worked that morning had to crawl in and retrieve your garbage! I hope it was worth it for you. Shame on you!

With all the negative, questionable and just plain bad news out there lately, I’ll take good news anywhere I can find it.
And one place is the website Good News Network (www. goodnewsnetwork.org). GNN, started in 1997, currently has 21,000 good news stories from around the world. Categories range from life, to gardening, to health, business and more.
There’s a free app for the phone, and if you don’t like to see ads, you can pay a yearly fee of $15 to get rid of them. Or click the “Subscribe” button to get a free bit of good news in your email each day.
There’s even a GNN book: “And Now, The Good News: 20 Years of Inspiring News Stories,” by Geri Weis-Corbley, available on Amazon in paperback. The reviews for the book are great, saying that the short stories are real mood-lifters. I’ll be ordering it. Here’s an example: The bank that lost 66 of its employees on 9/11 have paid to put all those employees’ kids through college. How great is that?!
Here’s another one from the book: A piece of a family farm was being sold at auction and a very young family member wanted to bid and hopefully win back the property. By common agreement, all the other 200 farmers at the auction stayed silent while the young family member was bidding. He won back the family’s farm land.
The Good News Network isn’t the only bright spot. Positive News (www.positive.news) will send a good news email once a week. The categories range from society to science to economics and more. It’s British, which makes it even more interesting.
If you’d rather look around on your own, do an online search for good news, positive world news or even good news for seniors. You’re sure to find something to smile about!

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished.
Organizationcanhelpprofessionalskeeptrackoftheirworkassignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.
Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of peopletheydubbed“supertaskers”werecapableofmultitaskingwithout adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once.
Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.
Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.
Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.
