Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time. ~John Lubbock, “Recreation,” The Use of Life, 1894

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK
Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.

POISONOUS PLANT TO AVOID AROUND THE HOUSE
Dumb cane: The houseplant dieffenbachia, commonly known as Dumb cane, adds tropical appeal indoors. The sap of the plant causes the tongue to burn and swell, enough to block off air to the throat. It can be fatal if ingested by both pets and humans.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY
Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

Living in rural WNY has perks but also pet challenges. Pets can run into coyotes, porcupines, and even the occasional skunk. Whether your dog’s an explorer or your cat’s an outdoor napper, staying up to date on vaccines and flea/tick meds is especially important in our neck of the woods.
came into our lives 6 years ago on a cold winter day. His mom cat dropped him off on our deck when he was just a small baby for us to care for. What a gi it was.Right in time for the holidays. It’s a long story that some day I’d like to write a book about. But for today I’d just like to say he’s my cuddle bug and we just adore him.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside.
He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York
DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.
Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.
The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.

Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.

The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.

One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.
At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.
Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.
That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.
Here are a few things I accomplished:
I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch.
A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours. This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.
I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.
That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted. If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful.

PHILETUS SWIFT
“So here I would take the liberty to say to every young man of our town never despise manual labor. Place the standard of your ambition at an elevated grade, as did this our veteran and highly respected pioneer townsman, and go thou and do likewise, and thou too shall be promoted to stations high and honorable.”
DR. CALEB BANNISTER
Phelps was blessed with many industrious early pioneers, and Philetus Swi stands out as one of the first and notably hard-working ones. One of ten children, Philetus was born in Kent Litchfield, Connecticut in June 1763 to Elisha Swi and Mary Ransom. Philetus’s older brother, Brigadier General John L. Swi , served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Elmore’s Regiment, Connecticut Line at the Niagara Frontier. John and his family came to what is now Palmyra in 1788, and Philetus and his family settled in modern-day Phelps the following year.
Philetus served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the War of 1812 at the Niagara Frontier, and when Governor Daniel Tompkins ordered the New York militia of 600 volunteers to promptly set out for the frontier, they served under Lt. Col. Philetus Swi ’s command. In his book, Battle of Chippewa, H. Charles Mc Barron Jr., says Lt. Col. Philetus Swi brought his battalion as reinforcements to General Brown’s Regiment’s Le Division at Queenston Heights and later in the battle of Fort George. Historians are not sure if Philetus, his brother, John L. Swi , or their younger brother, Captain Elisha Swi Jr., ever crossed paths at the frontier.
In 1789, Philetus bought lot 1 of 320 acres east of Unionville, bordering the old Pre-Emption line. He built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of Route 96 and County Road 6. On the north side of presentday Route 96, Philetus built his two story, Federal-style limestone home in two stages starting in 1792 and completed in 1816. Philetus’ home was placed on the National Register in 2005. My cousins Katy (Raes) and Marinus (Zeke) Lockemeyer were caretakers of the home for many years. I am sure many of you have driven by the stately home and probably never knew who built it!
I didn’t!
In 1790, Philetus worked hard chopping timber on John Decker Robison’s farm. In 1817, he built a grist mill, a flour mill, and a saw mill on Canandaigua Outlet. His nephew, Henry Swi , ran the mills until 1858.
Philetus was elected Assessor at the first town meeting and served as Phelps’ 8th Town Supervisor from 1818-1822. He was also the Presidential Elector in 1820, recorded as voting for James Monroe and Daniel D. Tompkins.
Dr. Caleb Bannister described Philetus’ work in his 1852 Address Pamphlet on Phelps Agricultural Society, saying, “ ere that Mr. Swi Labored with such zeal and ambition that he was under the necessity o en of divesting himself of his body linen for the purpose of wringing out the water with which it was saturated from the pores of his body. I mention not by way of disparagement, but as highly to his credit. His persevering industry in subsequence years, was crowned with the most flattering success in accumulation of wealth. His sound common sense was equally successful in securing the confidence of his fellow citizens; he was promoted to office of high honor and trust, both civil and military, he became Judge of the county court, a member of the State Senate 1810-1815 & from 18161818, and at one time discharged the duties of

Lieutenant Governor, as president Pro-Tempore of the senate, and he commanded a regiment in the Army of 1812 on the Niagara Frontier.
“So here I would take the liberty to say to every young man of our town never despise manual labor. Place the standard of your ambition at an elevated grade, as did this our veteran and highly respected pioneer townsman, and go thou and do likewise, and thou too shall be promoted to stations high and honorable.” How true a statement!
Philetus was originally buried in the Phelps Pioneer Cemetery, which retains a gravestone to mark it, but on January 1, 1905, his granddaughter had his remains reinterred in the Webster Rural Cemetery (Grave location DD RO5 G42). Why, I don’t know. Also notable, while some early historians referred to Philetus as Gen. or General, and his gravestone notes Gen. as well, I cannot substantiate that rank, only Lieutenant Colonel. Regardless, Philetus Swi was a significant part of Phelps’ past and a very hard-working individual that helped make our region what it is today.

DEAR DR. ROACH: IjustfoundoutthatIhaveakidney stone. I’m 77 years old, and I don’t want to deal with it. I’ve heard of potassium citrate and pulverizing it with sound waves. Are these options? -- J.M.
ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones.
Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).
Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).
My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.
Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.
If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strengthtraining activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupledwithstrengthtrainingmay also provide adequate physical activityforagingmenandwomen. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those riskswhilestillbeingactive.
