PIGS ARE SMARTER THAN YOU THINK
Pigs are valued not just for their meat, but for their brains. Studies have shown pigs can use mirrors, solve puzzles, and even learn basic commands on par with dogs. If you’ve ever raised one, you know they’re curious, vocal, and full of personality. And yes, they love a good belly rub.
Roxy is cuddly, friendly and adventurous. She is an outdoor cat and is 7 years old. She is like a friend to me!
COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS
Diabetes: While not entirely preventable, as diabetes can be caused by either a lack of the hormone insulin or the body’s inadequate response to insulin, pet owners can manage the disease with the right foods and insulin injections.

The case of the chronically constipated cat
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 13-year-old cat, “Tibbles,” has suddenly developed a litter box problem. He pees quite a lot -- I’m constantly scooping the box -- but I have not seen any poo for about three days. Tibbles seems comfortable and doesn’t seem distressed. -Jamie B. in Milwaukee
DEAR JAMIE: A significant change in litter box habits is a signal that something is going on, and you should call the veterinarian.
Cats are famously good at hiding illness. It’s an instinctive trait to keep predators away. If they’re feeling a bit off, you’ll almost never notice. If they’re seriously ill, they may hide themselves away. Senior cats like Tibbles become very secretive as their body ages. They walk more slowly and jump less if arthritis is developing. Their personality may change. They may yowl from discomfort or confusion.
Your cat may be developing a kidney problem, but to confirm this, you’ll need to bring Tibbles to the vet for some tests. It would be helpful to collect a urine sample and a stool sample (if he goes before your visit), so the vet can present results faster. If you’re not able to do that ahead of the visit, the vet may give you collection tools and instructions on how to get those samples and bring them in later.
Make sure that your cat is hydrating as well as possible. Keep his water bowl filled. Give him less dry kibble and more paté-style cat food. Limit his treats to just one or two pieces a day, or switch to a “lickable” treat (available in packets at most retailers).
The veterinarian will provide further dietary adjustments, and possibly medication, once they’ve observed and tested your cat. Follow their instructions precisely to help Tibbles become regular again.
For Albion native Karen Kinter, community has never been something separate from daily life. It’s the thread that runs through her family, her faith, her hobbies, and her work.
Kinter has spent her life in Albion, where neighbors know her as much for her presence at One Catholic Holy Family Church, local festivals, and Friday night football games as they do for her role as CEO of Oak Orchard Health. She’s a familiar face at the Strawberry Festival, cheering on the Muckdogs, and teaching spin classes at Village Spin in Medina.
Her roots in Orleans County keep her grounded. When asked where people might find her on a given weekend, she doesn’t hesitate: small-town events, church gatherings, or enjoying meals at her favorites, Main Street Pizzeria or Batavia’s Original.
While she happens to lead a large healthcare organization, her path there wasn’t driven by ambition alone. With degrees from Medaille University and the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School, she began her career in finance and billing for Visiting Nurse Service. But what pulled her forward wasn’t numbers. It was people. She says, “I’ve always had a passion to work within my community to have an impact to support our neighbors and friends to be healthier.” at drive eventually brought her to Oak Orchard Health, where she has worked in different roles for over a decade before stepping into leadership in 2022.
At Oak Orchard, Kinter has overseen expansions in medical, dental, and behavioral health services across five counties. Under her leadership, the Albion Wellness Center reopened in 2024, and new therapists were added in Albion and Brockport to help meet the growing need for pediatric and adolescent care. Kinter quickly points out that Oak Orchard Health is about more than just medicine. “It’s about building community partnerships that serve people from birth through every stage of life.” at philosophy shines through in projects like the Warming Centers Oak Orchard helps operate in Orleans County and Brockport.
TOP KAREN KINTER, CEO WITH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TEAM BOTTOM AT THE WELLNESS CENTER OPENING
e Homeless Alliance of Western New York praised the effort, calling the warming centers “truly remarkable.” For Kinter, the recognition is gratifying, but the real reward is knowing that people in her community have a safe place to turn when they need it most.
KinterisalsopassionateaboutmakingOakOrchard a place where employees feel supported. “I believe our people are the heart of Oak Orchard Health,” she says. Fostering open communication and listening to staff have helped create a culture where employees feel valued, something she considers essential to good patient care and community.
To Kinter, leadership is less about titles and more about service. She sees her role as an extension of her community values. e recognition she’s received, including a Women of Excellence Award, enables her to mentor other women, and she says, “To me, it’s all about being a role model, mentoring other women, helping with their career pathways, and overcoming challenges both personally and professionally.”
Her sense of balance comes from keeping her priorities clear. Work is important, but so is staying active, showing up for local events, and living her faith. She credits Albion itself, with the close-knit people, the small-town rhythms — with shaping who she is and how she leads.
“Serving a rural community means that the needs are significant, but it’s extremely rewarding to serve
those who have difficulty accessing care. We are always looking to develop programs that will help everyone,” Kinter said.
For her, the work comes down to one simple goal: helping her neighbors live healthier, fuller lives, and healthy, connected people make stronger communities. “We want the community to be more stable by promoting health and well-being. We treat their illnesses, mental health, and social needs. For the community to advance economically, people must be healthy. OOH can help.”
For neighbors in Albion and across Orleans County, Karen Kinter is more than a CEO. She’s a local who shows up, gives back, and never forgets where she came from.

In autumn, don’t go to jewelers to see gold; go to the parks!
~Mehmet Murat ildan
The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept.
How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves....
But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.
~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

Expired products at home?
When the pandemic began over five years ago and our stores were keeping odd hours and sometimes the shelves were empty, many of us stocked up on food and supplies when we could get them. We chose canned goods and dry boxed foods like pasta, as well as staples like bleach and sanitizing wipes.
Where are those items now? Are some of them still on our shelves at home, maybe tucked in the back and kept for emergencies?
It’s time to check those items for expiration dates. Most are likely too old to be used, and many of them can make us sick if we do.
Here are a few hints as you go through your stash:
You’ll likely need a magnifying glass as you look at each item because the dates are often very small.
The dilemma with foods is that the experts don’t agree. Some claim that an expiration date doesn’t really mean the food is no longer good, while some say to pay attention to the dates. Plus, there’s a difference between “best by,” “sell by” and “use by” dates. Confusing, isn’t it? I tend to go by the date that’s printed as the cutoff date. Bleach really does expire and lose potency, and so do the sanitizing wipes, antibacterial hand soap and other cleaning products. Look on the product for a lot number and check the company’s website for dates of manufacture or how to decode the batch number.
Even your shampoo has a limit to the time it can sit unused in your bathroom cabinet, and so do toothpaste, deodorant, hand lotion, eye drops -- nearly everything you use. Go online to www.checkfresh. com. Click the brand of your item and type in the lot number. It will tell you when it was made.
When in doubt, call the manufacturer. It’s better to be safe than to use an expired product.
Education is vital for young people to reach their full potential and enjoy success in adulthood. Students’ academic journeys begin as early as preschool and continue for decades. While students ultimately earn degrees or professional certifications in their own names, their academic journeys are often a team effort that includes the support of their parents.
Parental involvement in school can pay significant dividends for students. In 2019, the American Psychological Association reviewed more than 400 studies examining parental involvement in school. That review found that students whose parents were involved in their children’s schooling showed greater academic achievement, school engagement and motivation compared to youngsters with parents who were not involved. That payoff compels millions of parents to get involved in their children’s schooling, and the following are a handful of ways to do just that.
• Start the year off right. Parental involvement in children’s schooling can begin before a new school year gets under way. Orientation events designed to acclimate students to new schools can help calm youngsters’ nerves when they’re beginning kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, or high school. Transferring to a new school due to a family relocation or another variable can be difficult for students, and parents can make that transition a little easier by attending orientation events before the first day of classes. Back-to-school nighs held a week or two into the school year also present a great chance for parents to start the year off right.
• Actively communicate with children’s teachers. Parents can contact teachers at the start of a new school year to identify the best way to communicate. Some schools utilize apps to facilitate communication with parents. Some teachers may prefer communicating via email, phone calls or even text messages. Parents should not hesitate or be afraid to reach out to teachers about their children’s needs.
• Do your part at home, too. Parental involvement in children’s education can extend to the home as well. Parents can emphasize the importance of education in conversations with their children and offer to help with homework when children seem to need some assistance. Parents also can ask about assignments and tests, enthusiastically engage in projects designed to involve students’ families, and provide a stable, distraction-free home environment where kids can focus on their schoolwork.
• Volunteer with parental organizations. Parent teacher associations/organizations are always in need of members to help to organize special events and volunteer at school functions. Parents can join groups such as a PTA or PTO to get more involved in campus life. If joining such groups is not possible, parents can let it be known that they would like to volunteer for events throughout the school year.
• Ask children about their day. One of the simplest ways parents can be more involved in children’s schooling is to ask them about their day when they arrive home. Ask children what they did in class, and which parts of their day they found most, or even least, enjoyable. When parents express an interest in what kids are doing at school, that may compel kids to be more interested in their
Children are the ultimate beneficiaries when parents get involved in their youngsters’ education, and there’s no shortage of ways for moms and dads to engage at school.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

HEALTH CARE SCREENINGS FOR MEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 39
Blood pressure: The United States Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health urge men between the ages of 18 and 39 to have their blood pressure checked at least once every two years. Many men already have their blood pressure checked during annual wellness visits, which all men should schedule regardless of their fitness levels and overall health. Men with preexisting conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and kidney problems, may need more frequent blood pressure screenings. In addition, annual screenings are recommended if the top number is between 120 and 139 and/or the lower number is between 80 and 89.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I want to point out a serious health concern. My daughter turned 40 last year and got a mammogram that came back with a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 microinvasive carcinoma. She underwent three surgeries, the last of which was a double mastectomy.
I read that cancer incidence increases with hormone usage that is greater than five years in a row. My daughter’s doctor prescribed “the pill” to her for much greater than five years and never even warned her of the risk.
How many other women are unaware of the risks? In many cases, these women are busy, young professionals as my daughter is. They are using the pill because it is so easy. Please warn them and their parents. -- M.R..
ANSWER: The association of combined oral contraceptives with breast cancer is controversial. Many large studies, such as the Nurses’ Health Study, didn’t find an association between “the pill” with breast cancer, either while a woman is using it or after she stops.
Q. A.
There have been some studies that have shown an increase in risk, but the magnitude of the risk is small. In a large Danish study, the overall increase in risk was about one additional case of breast cancer in 8,000 women taking the pill for a year. For women under 35, the risk was one case in 50,000 women per year. The studies that showed a risk for breast cancer did not show an increased risk when women took them for longer.
Oral contraceptives certainly have risks. Blood clots are more common among users. They have side effects that can be very bothersome and sometimes prevent women from using them. However, there is an overall improvement in mortality risk among users because even in 2025, having a baby puts a mother’s life at risk, and oral contraceptives are effective at preventing pregnancy.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy male, age 65. I get 7-8 hours of sleep most nights, but during the night, I typically wake up three to four times with a very full bladder. So, I use the bathroom, then return to bed.
My question is, where do my kidneys get all the water to make so much urine? I’m not drinking during the night, and I don’t drink anything before I go to sleep. Where is it coming from? This does not happen during my waking hours. -- B.F.
ANSWER: When you drink or even eat food with a high water content, this fluid will be absorbed into your blood, but it takes time. Once it’s in your blood, it will then be filtered by your kidneys to make urine, but this, too, takes time.
In general, I tell my patients to stop drinking 4 hours or more before bedtime. People who have kidneys that aren’t at 100% function may need an even longer time so that they can urinate all the fluid out.
There are other considerations. Many men and women over 60 develop swollen legs during the day due to leaky blood vessels and valves in the veins. Taking in excess salt worsens this problem. The fluid will go back into the blood overnight, and it can easily be enough fluid to fill the bladder. Compression stockings can reduce the amount of fluid in the legs.
Finally, the body has a system for reducing urine output at night (the anti-diuretic hormone is secreted at night to prevent you from having to get up), and in some people, this system fails. The hormone can be given nasally in these cases, but since it can affect blood sodium levels, it needs to be used very judiciously.
Lines are short. Waiting in long lines for checkout or to pick up merchandise ordered online can drain consumers’ energy and contribute to stress. Local businesses tend to have short lines and small crowds, which can lead to a more pleasant shopping experience.
from our family to yours
We started as one paper out of a garage in Avon, NY, tediously writing, pasting, and hand drawing ads for our weekly shopper. Now, we have grown to cover quite a footprint in Western New York–delivering papers from the Southern Tier’s Steuben County northwest through Orleans County with our now twelve weekly editions!
Since our founding in 1948, our beloved publication has continued to expand while remaining family-owned and operated right here in Avon.

Beautiful Tribute
Brighter
Thank you SO much for sharing the beautiful tribute to Chuck Mangione in the Hometown Stories. He was one of my clients and a dear personal friend, and he was such a wonderful person. It was great to read that someone wrote such a beautiful piece about him.
Precious Gesture
As I walked my son down Main Street the other day, I noticed we were approaching a man mowing his lawn. I was a little worried about my baby’s ears because of the noise, but as we got closer, the man cut his engine and we walked by. I noticed he wore ear plugs. I said, “Did you just stop so we could walk by?” He replied, “Absolutely. I would never take that chance.” So to the wonderfully kind man who did that for us the other day, I just want to say thank you! What may have seemed like a small gesture of kindness to you really meant the world to me. I haven’t stopped thinking about it all week. We live in a special little town!
Batavia Angels
I would like to thank the four gentlemen who helped my husband, Chris, when he fell out of his wheelchair on August 22nd at the corner of Jefferson and Main St. What’s more, I am most grateful to the four young EMTs who checked Chris’ vitals and took him to the ER. It was our 27th wedding anniversary and we were walking to the little waterfall behind the courthouse. Thank you all so very much! God bless you all.
Please, out of respect for fellow shoppers, let’s keep nudity out of public shopping places. It’s very embarrassing. If you feel the need to dress so skimpy, please do it within the walls of your home. Thank you!
Tips for Food Delivery Drivers
As a [food] delivery driver for the area, I’d like to explain how we get paid to deliver your food. The [company] pays $2 an order plus whatever tip you leave. So if your order isn’t picked up, consider tipping $1 for every mile you are away from the place you’re ordering.
Don’t Citicize Unless You Offer Help
So many of our neighbors struggle to make ends meet nowadays. How about a little patience and grace instead of the eye rolling and groans when someone takes a little extra time at the register because a card gets declined or, heaven forbid, an EBT card doesn’t scan properly. Remember that many of us are just one accident away from the same boat.
