Getting a COVID Booster Before a Cruise Is Prudent for Couple DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I will be traveling to the United Kingdom in July and will be on a ship with about 700 passengers. We are wondering whether it would be smart (or unnecessary) to get a COVID booster before the trip. We are both in our late 60s and have had all the available COVID shots. (The last one we received was on Oct. 10, 2024.)

Q.

I have mild asthma, and we both have BMIs of about 30 with no other health issues. There is so much information and misinformation on these vaccinations, so I would appreciate your educated opinion. -- O.W.I.

A.

ANSWER: In my opinion, it would be very smart to get a COVID shot before you go, ideally at least two weeks ahead but no more than three months ahead. The vaccine takes about two weeks to work and gives its best protection for about three months.

At the time of this writing, a new strain (NB.1.8.1) is rapidly spreading in other countries and in North America. It would be very prudent for you both to get the vaccine, especially given your risk factors of being over 65, being a little overweight, and (in your case) having mild asthma. You may very well be exposed on a cruise ship, which is where some of the earliest COVID cases came from.

While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has recently set new requirements on who can get the vaccine, and they have done so without the input of experts -- the basic scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists who should all be giving input on vaccine policies. In short, administrators have removed your doctor’s ability to decide whether you are appropriate for the vaccine.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

Since you are over 65, you and your husband should still be able to get the vaccine unless the FDA further restricts the ability to get vaccines. For others in similar situations, I recommend getting the vaccine while you still have this choice.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain.

Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DR. ROACH WRITES: Quite a few readers asked me about a recent high-profile case of advanced prostate cancer -- President Joe Biden -- and how this could have happened.

I first answer with humility. I don’t know what the screening was like for President Biden. Although I have read reports that he was not being screened, I am not confident that I know enough to have an opinion on the appropriateness of the screening strategy used in his case.

Second, I answer from my knowledge on the biology of prostate cancer, which is that not all prostate cancers can be caught through screening. A PSA level can be low even with advanced cancer. Also, some prostate cancers can grow very quickly in between screenings. Both of these would be uncommon, however.

Screening does reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer but does not eliminate it. Prostate cancer death rates have decreased by about half in the U.S., partly from screening and partly due to improvements in medical, radiological and surgical treatment.

According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika.

Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary.

Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

Exercise videos on AARP Here’s one more reason to keep checking back on the AARP website: the big selection of fitness offerings in the healthy living section.

There are the articles, of course: complete guide to pickleball, link between sugar and cancer, ways to get an energy boost and others.

But it’s the workout videos that have caught my eye.

HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all.

While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and New York Sea Grant (NYSG) announced $199,696 in grants for five Great Lakes basin projects.

The initiatives support local community plans to restore water quality, protect ecosystems, and strengthen community resilience and stewardship. These selected projects support measurable progress toward the priority goals of the Great Lakes Action Agenda for New York’s Great Lakes watershed.

This project will include invasive plant species management and programming workshops to educate local forest landowners about invasive species identification and management strategies.

Genesee County Parks: $39,753 for “Healthy Headwaters: Empowering Youth to Restore Riparian Habitat in the Upper Black Creek Watershed” to restore 140 linear feet of riparian (situated on or adjacent to rivers and streams) habitat in the headwaters area of the Upper Black Creek watershed, using ecosystem-based management techniques and nature-based solutions that reduce erosion in Genesee County Park and Forest. The project will engage a coalition of community organizations as well as 200 youth and 25 adult volunteers in hands-on restoration and education to build stewardship and inspire future environmental leaders.

This project will transform 6.75 acres and more than 2,700 linear feet of degraded land along Two Mile Creek into a resilient and ecologically functional riparian area.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County: $40,000 for “Seeds of Stewardship: Community-Based Native Seed Network for the Northeast Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Region” to launch a native seed collection and propagation program across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. The project will train volunteers, develop local seed storage and propagation infrastructure, and utilize native plant material to support habitat restoration and resilience.

New York Sea Grant, a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York, administers the program in partnership with DEC’s Great Lakes Program. The program is funded through the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and Article 14 of the New York Ocean and Great Lakes Ecosystem Conservation Act outlined in the EPF. The 202526 enacted State Budget increases the EPF to a record $425 million, helping support critical environmental programs such as land acquisition, farmland protection, invasive species prevention and eradication, enhanced recreational access, water quality improvement, and an aggressive environmental justice agenda.

Atlantic States Legal Foundation: $39,943 for “A Community-Driven Tree Planting Initiative for Adaptation and Revitalization in Pulaski” to engage residents and partners in planning and planting more than 70 trees in priority locations throughout the village of Pulaski, reducing risks such as flooding and heat stress, enhancing ecosystem services, and supporting long-term environmental stewardship. Guided by the RichlandPulaski Comprehensive Plan and Climate Action Plan and three inclusive community workshops, residents and local partners will help identify strategic planting locations, develop site-specific plans, and learn about the social, ecological, and economic benefits of trees.

How can I keep this big guy calm on the leash? -- Vance K. in Minneapolis DEAR VANCE: Congratulations on your new dog! And kudos for prioritizing his behavior training.

The most important factor in your dog calming down on the leash is consistency, consistency, consistency. You need to work with him first thing in the morning -- during and after his morning walk -- and in the evening. Sessions can be just five minutes long.

Positive reinforcement is another factor. When Sharpe starts to associate good behavior with a positive stimulus -- a treat or extra affection -- he’ll repeat that behavior more often, and willingly.

Lately, we have come upon highway workers resurfacing the roadways.

Please watch for and obey the flag person that is directing traffic.

Why do some think they should drive around them, ignore stop signs, beep the horn, swear or even give them the finger? They are only doing their job in keeping the roads in good and safe condition for all of us. To the many highway workers in and around the area, a BIG THANK YOU for standing out there or driving a dump truck in this recent heat wave we have had. You are appreciated by many of us!

A rave to praise Hidden treasures that lie within, long forgotten, buried deep inside behind a wall where no one has ever been. We take for granted things in this life. We put nothing in perspective, just leave it to strife! I write this rave for Hocus-Focus’ artist, Henry Boltinoff, for waking a talent that was long ago lost... drawing! Mr. Boltinoff is very talented in bringing to life his art and others’ “hidden inspiration” and love of drawing. HocusFocus has saved my life in so many ways; words cannot express my gratitude and attitude for his art. The Penny Saver is very blessed to have him as an artist and contributor to the many lives he has touched... especially mine. I enjoy the Penny Saver that much more knowing Hocus-Focus is patiently awaiting an exit from my mailbox to my kitchen table top with a sketch pad, art supplies, and determination to draw the characters of Mr. Henry Boltinoff’s Hocus-Focus. Thank you for keeping me alive and well fed with drawing.

Telephone Crimes The disgusting behavior of phone users has really gotten out of hand. I attended an outdoor concert, and people could not just sit and listen. They had to hold their phones up to record portions of it, blocking the line of sight for everyone behind them. Some in the front row even stood up to get a wide sweeping view, and then they had to share it with their partner while still standing. I finally had to move to the open area in the rear where no one was around me so I could get an uninterrupted view.

Quiet Hours mean ‘Be Quiet! ’ As much as we know that everyone loves to blare their music while driving on these lovely summer days (keyword: DAYS), we do not need to hear ‘your’ loud car stereo system past 10pm. Some of us prefer to not be woken up to our homes shaking or being shaken out of bed because you decide that the entire neighborhood needs to hear your music.

Bloomfield – Regina Crista Schmitt, 64, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 25, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.

Regina’s sparkle, warmth, and love were truly one of a kind. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, laughter, and unwavering love – and she will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Regina was born on April 29, 1961, in Germany to Ernst and Maria Wienand. She grew up in Kleinostheim, where she attended school and developed the deep sense of care and compassion that would define her life. Regina poured love into everything she did – especially into creating warm, welcoming homes where others could find peace, comfort, and rest.

Regina is predeceased in death by her father, Ernst Wienand; her parents-in-law, Wilhelm & Thekla Schmitt; and her brothers-in-law, Rodney Golding, Freddie Wieland & Jurgen Zimmerman.

A true social butterfly, Regina lived with a vibrant zest for life. Her deep faith, unwavering love, and joyful spirit touched everyone she met. Her devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family, and countless friends was a testament to her exceptional character. She brought light, laughter, and warmth into every room, and her kindness, generosity, and willingness to serve others set a powerful example of a life well lived.

Regina had a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature and found joy in life’s simple pleasures – especially flowers, gardening, and evenings spent around a campfire with loved ones. She was passionate about giving back and was actively involved in her community. After the passing of her father, she volunteered at the House of John hospice. She also served as a Girl Scout leader for both of her daughters and regularly attended support groups alongside friends facing similar health challenges.

Regina is survived by her husband, Volker Schmitt; her daughters, Patricia (Chet) Hamann & Jennifer ( Jesse) Baker; her grandchildren, Noah, Natalie, Christopher, Kennedy & Cody; her mother, Maria Wienand; her siblings, Margit Wieland, Hans Peter (Birgit) Wienand, Heike Zimmerman, Judith (Stefan) Kieser; in-laws, Alfred (Rose) Schmit, Herb ( Janet) Schmitt, Heidi (Dan) Gardner & Peter (Benita) Schmitt; several nieces, nephews, cousins & friends; and her social pup, Hunter, whom she adored endlessly.

Services for Regina will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
