POOL SAFETY ESSENTIALS TO LIVE BY
Rely on non-slip surfaces. The pool environment can be wet and slippery. Utilizing materials like non-slip deck surfaces or rougher concrete finishes around pools can help reduce some slips and falls. The pool resource Poolonomics says people should be instructed to avoid running near or around the pool.
Apply safe repellents that use essential oils or flavors and scents that groundhogs do not like. Epsom salt is believed to repel groundhogs.
HANDYMEN/WOMEN
Wood comes in many varieties, from hard and softwoods to wicker furniture. Mild oil-based soaps and products geared especially to cleaning wood can be handy. On wicker and painted woods, it may be best to dilute the solutions before use. Hardwood furniture and built-in decking structures may benefit from annual sanding and then reapplication of a protective finish to maintain the look of the wood for long periods of time.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.
First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Grateful
Recently, I received two blood transfusions provided by the American Red Cross. As a retired Red Cross Apheresis nurse, I was so proud and grateful for the compassionate two people who took time out of their day to donate this precious liquid gold. Until the need is there, we don’t often think about donating. Please, if you can, call the Red Cross and ask if you are eligible to give this great gift.
Co liment Made My Day
To the (much) younger man who complimented me today at Walmart, telling me I’m beautiful, you absolutely made my day! I don’t often receive those kinds of compliments, aside from my husband, which is why I awkwardly mumbled a thank you and hurried away, lol, but your words were very sweet. Somebody raised you well.

It’s always so sad to see people just throwing their cigarette butts down on the ground, especially if there’s somewhere to dispose of them close by. It makes the surrounding property look terrible and unkept. You would think people in their area of where they live would want to keep it clean. Perhaps you live like that, but others don’t want to, they choose clean areas.
Travelers on [local road], PLEASE obey the 35mph speed limit. This is the worst year ever with very few vehicles going the correct speed. It’s a nice neighborhood where people walk little ones in strollers and with their dogs. They should be able to do this safely and there are no sidewalks so they are on the roadside. Thank you to those who drive the posted speed limit.
Grocery Carts
Stop being lazy! Return your grocery cart to the store or those cart stalls. We sat there watching a lady put her groceries in her car. We bet she was going to leave it. She sure did. Having kids is no excuse either. If you can walk to get a cart, you can return it and walk back. Just laziness!

Planning for aging in place
Are you in your last home and plan to age in place where you are? Or is there at least one more abode in your future?
A recent study concluded that 84% of seniors plan to stay in their home for the rest of their lives. Planning (and hoping) doesn’t make it definite, of course. Of those who plan to stay, only a quarter have moved to a place that’s actually age-friendly, and a third of respondents have made age-related modifications to their home. Over a third say they’ll need to make modifications and that cost would be a barrier to making it happen.
And what is it people are doing to turn their homes into places where they can stay as they age? First-floor bedrooms are high on the list, allowing seniors to avoid stairs. Ramps at the outside door are another way to avoid stairs. Grab bars in showers, as well as walkin showers, are also high on the list, as well as improved lighting, non-slip flooring and doorways wide enough for wheelchairs. Those who don’t have those things in their homes want them, of course.
The physical home and any needed modifications are not the only considerations about whether seniors can age in place where they are. The community itself is important, with opportunities for new connections and maintaining the ones they already have, resources for support services they might need in the future, transportation to stores and doctors and easy access to family and friends. If you want to start planning for your own aging in place, there are many resources for assistance, such as AARP’s checklist (www.aarp.org/home-living/aging-in-place-checklist). The key is to begin early in making your home safe and comfortable for the future, especially if finances are going to be a consideration for large remodeling projects.

Adopting a Shelter Dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog?
— Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana
DEARJULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply.
There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.
Here are some important questions you should ask:
• Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown?
• Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet?
• If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)?
Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines.
Find something free: Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off of parents’ daily plates. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host.

Woman’s T-Score Continues To Worsen Amid Treatment
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old Asian woman. Each day, I walk 4 miles and do 30 minutes of stretching, as well as 1 hour of cardio, strength or balance exercises by following videos provided by my health insurance. Also, my brother and sister who are in their 60s and 70s have weak bones and muscles. It seems to run in my family.
In 2000, with a T-score of -1.9, I was diagnosed with osteopenia and commenced three episodes of treatment. For the first treatment, I took Fosamax in 2001, then started Actonel in 2002 for a total of six years. My T-score was -1.7. Three years later, my T-score was back to -1.9, so in 2009, for the second treatment, I restarted Actonel but switched to Boniva in February 2010 for a total of four years. My T-score was -1.4. Then, after four more years, my T-score was -2.2. For my third treatment, I restarted Boniva and took it from 2018-2025. My T-score is now -1.4. My primary care doctor has me on a “pill vacation” for one year, and I’m awaiting further treatment until a bone density test at the end of 2025. But I fear that without treatment, my aging bones are only getting worse.
I try to eat right, stay active, and have started doing yoga pose videos that claim to strengthen my bones. Will they? Which shots or other treatments might help me avoid further deterioration of my bones? -- R.M.H.
Q. A.
ANSWER: Osteoporosis is a condition of bones that predisposes someone to getting a fracture. Anyone can get osteoporosis, but white and Asian women are at the highest risk.
Treatment of osteoporosis includes lifestyle adjustments such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake (if appropriate), and regular exercise. Both muscle-building and weight-bearing exercise are important. Yoga and stretching probably do have some additional benefit on top of your stamina-building (“cardio”) and strength exercises. Even though the evidence isn’t very strong, most people with osteoporosis are treated with calcium and vitamin D.
I use the FRAX score to decide whether medication therapy is indicated for a patient. In men and women who are at a high risk of fracture, medicines in the bisphosphonate class -- such as alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel) and ibandronate (Boniva) -- are the most commonly used first-line treatments.
Bisphosphonates last for a long time in the body’s tissues. We don’t want to use them for too long since they suppress the normal amount of bone breakdown that is key to maintaining healthy bone. Treatment for too long can lead to atypical femur fractures. A “drug holiday” is a common strategy, and given how long you have taken various bisphosphonates, I wouldn’t worry too much about the year off.
You have had less of a response than most of my patients have had to bisphosphonates, and many experts would change the class of drugs if you remain at a high risk via your FRAX score. Should you need further treatment, a different type of medicine like teriparatide (Forteo) or romosozumab (Evenity) might be considered. At this point, you should be seeing an expert such as an endocrinologist who specializes in the treatment of osteoporosis.
Finally, although celiac disease has been thought to be less common in Asians, it often leads to poor absorption and osteoporosis, so it’s worth considering a test. Symptoms of celiac disease can be very subtle.
Gum disease: Gum disease may start with mild inflammation and then become more severe if it is left untreated. The inflammation also may affect the ligament that attaches teeth to the socket in the jaw. This ligament has many nerve fibers. When inflamed, the nerves can get fired up and cause pain.

LEGACY
IN FORM AND FUNCTION:
The Enduring Vision of Wendell Castle and His Workshop
“Our goal is to inspire trailblazers –people who try not to see any boundaries to their creativity.”
In a quiet corner of Scottsville, where rolling farmlandgiveswaytoanunassumingindustrial building, the spirit of a design icon continues to shape the world of art furniture. It was here that Wendell Castle, celebrated American artist, cra sman, and visionary, created some of the most iconic sculptural furniture pieces of the 20th and 21st centuries. And today, it is here that the Wendell Castle Workshop (WCW) carries forward his bold legacy.
Widely regarded as the father of the American studio furniture movement, Castle (19322018) spent over five decades redefining the relationship between art and function. His daughter, Alison, says, “My father was known as the father of the woodworking furniture movement. He came along and made wood furniture that was meant to be experienced as both art and as furniture.”
From the earliest days of his career, Castle “consistently challenged the traditional boundaries of functional design,” embracing stack lamination and hand carving to create curvilinear, o en whimsical forms that were sculptural yet functional. Castle was renowned for his expert cra smanship, organic forms, and original techniques he shared with students at Rochester’s School of American Cra smen and Rochester Institute of Technology. With works housed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, his influence reached far beyond his upstate New York studio.
A Studio Reborn
Within the same studio Castle lived, worked, and innovated years ago, his legacy continues in a very tangible way. In 1980, Castle founded the original Wendell Castle Workshop as a twoyear degree-granting school that operated until 1988. Decades later, Alison Castle found herself considering how best to honor her fathera erhispassingin2018,andshesays,“Itbecameimmediately clear that a school would be the perfect way to honor him.”
By 2019, the Wendell Castle Project, a nonprofit dedicated to education, conservation, and programming centered on Castle’s work, was born. Four years later, in 2023, the Wendell Castle Workshop was revived, not as a degree-granting institution, but as a creative hub offering immersive classes, residencies, and programming for artists, woodworkers, and dreamers of all skill levels.

Ken Page, director of the Workshop, notes that Castle “turned the art world on its head” by forging a deep connectionbetweenfurnitureandfineart. eworkshop continues to uphold that vision, with programming rooted in Castle’s pioneering techniques and creative philosophy. “We consider ourselves custodians of the stack lamination and carving techniques that Castle championed, including the CNC technology that he adopted in the latter part of his career.”
e Workshop space itself is both reverent and alive. Fourteen individual workbenches now fill the central studio, flanked by two machine rooms. In his former living quarters, a gallery showcases the work of Wendell andhiswife, artistNancyJurs.Studentstouringthespace find themselves surrounded by finished and unfinished pieces, models, tools, and drawings.
A Place to Imagine
For many, the experience of working in Castle’s studio is transformative. Workshop student, Christina Alario, described it as “truly eye-opening” to reflect on Wendell’s legacy as she “listened to him as if he was here. He touched these tools, he created in this space. And I let myself imagine what it would be like if I did that too. I truly think my journey to working with wood in a different way started here.”
Another student, Sam Margolis, echoed the power of the place, saying, “It’s pretty special to work in Wendell’s workshop. It gives you an opportunity to step into his shoes. ere’s a camaraderie and respect with the great

rough technique classes, projectbased courses, and specialized instruction designed just for this setting, theWCWgivesmakersaccess to something rare – education that’s grounded in artistry, risk-taking, and the pursuit of form without boundaries.
A Vision Moving Forward
e Wendell Castle Workshop is more than a woodworking school; it’s a living legacy. It offers residencies for artists and designers, houses Castle’s archive, and builds connections with the local and international communities. With its mission to “inspire the next generation of Wendell Castles,” the Workshop places diversity, inclusion, and public engagement at the heart of its programming. at inspiration may take many forms – a teenager discovering wood as a creative medium, a seasoned sculptor honing a new skill, or a curious visitor encountering the intersection of art and furniture for the first time. But all who enter the Workshop enter a space charged with purpose.
As Alison Castle affirms, “Our goal is to inspire trailblazers – people who try not to see any boundaries to their creativity.” In that spirit, the Wendell Castle Workshop preserves a legacy and invites others to shape their own.
