RIBBON CUTTINGS

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take to social media. Though it certainly has its detractors, social media remains wildly popular. An April 2023 report from Global WebIndex indicated 60 percent of the world’s population uses social media, and the daily average usage is two hours and 24 minutes. Data from Meta indicates that 83 percent of Instagram users discover new brands while using the platform. Such reports illustrate how effective positive reviews and references to small local businesses can be. Consumers won’t need much time to share a story about a great local business on their social media accounts, but that small investment of time can pay big dividends for those companies.

Please join the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the grand opening & ribbon cutting of

Mrs. Green’s CANNAry 204 E. Main Street, Batavia

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

Makes 4 servings

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Learn the Available Options for Dealing With Kidney Stones &body mind

Q. A.DEAR DR. ROACH: IjustfoundoutthatIhaveakidney stone. I’m 77 years old, and I don’t want to deal with it. I’ve heard of potassium citrate and pulverizing it with sound waves. Are these options? -- J.M.

ANSWER: When a person gets a kidney stone, the goals are to manage any symptoms, determine if a person’s health is at risk (especially from infection or kidney damage), and decide which treatment might be necessary to prevent any new stones.

Extracorporeal sound wave lithotripsy is one way of removing symptomatic stones, as is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. The decision of whether intervention needs to be done is made by a urologist with expertise in stone management, and treatment depends on the size, type and location of your stone(s).

Prevention of a recurrent stone depends on the specific stone type and any metabolic issue the person has. Nearly everyone with stones is recommended to increase their water intake (to a level that is adequate enough to make at least 2 liters of urine a day -- and yes, we measure it) and decrease their salt intake (to less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day).

My former professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Fred Coe, told me that he has seen people with sodium levels in their urine exceeding 25,000 mg a day. A high sodium level strongly favors stone formation.

Potassium citrate is a good choice for people who have calcium oxalate stones (60% to 80% of stones) and low measured citrate in their 24-hour urine tests. A low-oxalate diet may also be appropriate, but you can’t make an informed decision without knowing which kind of stone you have and what your metabolism is like.

If you do pass a stone, save it; it will be useful for your doctor. There are several different types of less-common stones, so management can’t be tailored for you without this information.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

DID YOU KNOW?

Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS

One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.

OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT ESSENTIALS

Projector and screen: A screen and a way to project the movie are must-haves for any outdoor movie night.Projectors should be small enough that they can be carried outside, but large enough to emit enough light to fill the screen. Options range anywhere from $400 and up for quality projectors. Screens run the gamut from inflatable and freestanding options to white sheets hung from a clothesline. A dedicated screen will be more stable and look better, but it all comes down to budget.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS

Honeybees are humble insects that benefit the environment in various ways. Unfortunately, many people lump bees in with wasps and other seemingly “harmful” insects and do whatever is necessary to remove them from their properties. But it’s important to be mindful of the beneficial roles bees play and to take steps to maintain healthy habitats so they can thrive.

Bees are one of the most important pollinators of flowers, crops and fruit trees. These small insects can make or break entire food supplies. They also pollinate clover and alfalfa that provide feed for cattle. Some experts place the economic value of bees at roughly $15 billion per year.

A consortium of universities and research laboratories that reported to The White House in 2015 found that beekeepers lost 42.1 percent of their colonies between 2014 and 2015. Bee populations continue to decline. According to the conservation organization Save the Bees, recent surveys suggest close to a 99 percent loss in bees over the last 150 years, primarily due to increasing agricultural intensification.

To combat this sharp decline in bee populations, people from all walks of life can do their part to help bees thrive once again. And by helping bees, individuals also may indirectly help other beneficial pollinating insects, such as butterflies.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

ROOFING & SIDING MAKE THE

Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

PROFESSIONAL

Resale value: Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy,thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

EARLY TREATMENT KEY TO MANAGING SEASONAL DISEASES IN CATTLE

(NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious, chronic health problems. Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.

Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal.

Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. Effectively used by cattlemen for many years, it is widely available through most farm and veterinary supply companies.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The peace of avoiding the daily news

One month ago I wrote here about having avoided the television news for seven days. During that time, I didn’t have the stress from constant bombardment and media hysteria about all the problems and chronic chaos in the world. I felt better for it, both physically and mentally, but I knew I couldn’t keep it up forever.

At some point I figured I would have to rejoin the aware population and get up-to-date on what was going on.

Except I haven’t done that yet. Here at the one-month mark I’m still not watching the news.

That one hour block of time that used to be spent in front of the television getting “educated” about what was going on in the world has been used for other things.

Here are a few things I accomplished:

I shopped for, purchased and planted colorful flowers for the porch. A few times each week I feed and play with a neighbor’s cat while the neighbor works extra hours. This saves him the cost of a pet sitter and gives me a nice break with a sweet kitty.

I restarted my free online language lessons and have made considerable progress.

That’s not to say I have no clue about what’s been going on in the world.I set my phone to silently send me a few short alerts on selected topics. I can scan those at my leisure and not even click the link to read the articles. Five seconds of looking at the alert summaries tells me all I need to know. With one finger tap, they’re gone, deleted. If you want to take a news break, give it a few days or a week to try out. Don’t be surprised if you stick with it for much longer. It can be rather peaceful. (c)

PUBLIC NOTICE

NOTICE OF FILING OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CONSTRUCTION PLAN – LOCKPORT-BATAVIA LINE 112 REBUILD PROJECT

Subject: Case 22-T-0654 - Application of Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation d/b/a National Grid for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need Pursuant to Article VII for its Lockport-Batavia Line 112 Rebuild Project in Niagara and Genesee Counties.

On or about June 17, 2025, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation d/b/a National Grid (“National Grid”) intends to file with the New York State Public Service Commission (“Commission”) a proposed Environmental Management and Construction Plan (“EM&CP”) for the LockportBatavia Line 112 Rebuild Project (“Project”). e Project is National Grid’s proposal to rebuild approximately 21.7 miles of an existing 115 kilovolt (“kV”) electric transmission line, called “Line 112”. e western end of the Project would be immediately east of the first structure of Line 112, which is located just outside the Lockport Substation in the City of Lockport. e eastern end would be at (and include) the line’s Structure 211 in the Town of Alabama. e Project would rebuild all of existing Line 112 between those two structures, except for an approximately 1.9-mile section thereof on the site of the Western New York Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park being developed by the Genesee County Economic Development Center, which is not part of the Project. e facilities the Project is to replace are over 110 years old and have reached the end of their service lives. e Project will bring Line 112 up to current National Electrical Safety Code standards, and will improve the safety, performance, and reliability of the National Grid transmission system. EM&CP

e EM&CP describes the construction procedures and environmental protection measures proposed to be used for the Project. Included in the EM&CP is information relating to the specific location of the proposed construction procedures and environmental protection measures to be implemented for the Project. National Grid developed the EM&CP’s environmental protection measures in coordination with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, and the Department of Public Service Staff. National Grid also developed archaeological and historical protection measures in coordination with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. e EM&CP has been filed with the Commission in compliance with the Commission’s “Order Adopting Terms of a Joint Proposal, With Conditions” issued and effective September 24, 2024.

Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE U.S. AND CANADA

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that small businesses created 12.9 million net new jobs between 1996 and 2021. The Government of Canada reports that, between 2020 and 2021, small businesses were responsible for 69 percent of the net employment change between 2020 and 2021.

Protect yourself against COMMON SCAMS

Imagine getting a call from someone claiming a close family member is in trouble and needs money right now. Perhaps the voice sounds like the person themself asking for help.

Or the person identifies as an IRS agent and informs you that you are criminally liable for unpaid tax debts.

Maybe it is someone who found you through an online dating or friendship website and wants to visit you in person but is having financial difficulties.

Or it’s the Social Security Administration with an identity the alert.

Maybe it’s an email or phone call offering you a can’t-miss investment opportunity.

Perhaps the caller or email congratulates you on winning a grand prize.

Perhaps a text message informs you of a package needing delivery confirmation.

Or you log into a website and a pop-up warns you that your identity has been found on the dark web and is being used for criminal purposes.

Perhaps a warning tells you your system has a virus and urges you to call a toll-free number or click a link for tech support.

Unfortunately, all these scenarios and more are becoming increasinglycommonplaceintoday’sdigitalworld.Scammersare experts at playing with your mind and preying on your emotional vulnerabilities. ey create a sense of urgency, whether over the phone, online, or through text and email. ey want you to act fast without thinking. ey use fear to scare you into believing something bad will happen if you don’t pay. ey act like they’re in charge to make you think you have to do what they say. And some promise easy money or try to make you think they are in love with you.

All are lies to manipulate you to send money, reveal personal information, or both. If you are pressured to take immediate action without thinking it over or talking with someone else, including an attorney, it is a scam.

One of the most common scams today involves the purchase of gi cards, although providing personal information such as social security numbers and dates of birth or wiring money are also prevalent. Real companies and government agencies will never ask you to pay with gi cards. Only scammers will tell you to buy a gi card and give them the numbers off the back of the card. No matter what they say, that’s a scam. If you are buying a gi card for any reason other than physically giving it to someone in real life, it is a scam.

Gi cards are like cash for scammers. It is almost impossible to track gi cards a er they have been redeemed. Once a scammer has the card’s info, they quickly turn it into money. It is also nearly impossible to get your money back, which makes gi cards the perfect tool for scammers to get away with stealing. Even if you’re careful, you might still get tricked.

If you think you’ve been scammed, act fast. e sooner you act, the better your chances of getting your money back.

If the scam involves gi cards, call the company that issued the gi card. Tell them what happened. ey might be able to freeze the card or refund your money. Look for the company’s contact number on the back of the card or online. If the scam involves wiring funds or providing personal information, contact your bank, wire service provider, or credit card issuer immediately to report the fraud and stop any further activity.

In every event, report the scam to your local police and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at https:// reportfraud. c.gov. You may also want to contact the three major credit bureaus to place an alert on your file and freeze the opening of any new credit accounts at https://www. annualcreditreport.com/protectYourIdentity.action.

Save everything related to the scam, including e-mails, texts, receipts, and gi card numbers. Write down everything you remember about the scammer. e more evidence you have, the better, as it will help the police and the gi card company with their investigation.

How to Handle Our Flag With the Care and Respect It Deserves

Proper Folding Technique

Follow this folding technique once the United States flag is lowered from its mast or mount:

1 Begin by holding the flag at waist height between two people parallel to the ground.

2 Fold the lower striped section of the flag lengthwise, up and over the blue field of stars.

3 Fold again, bringing the folded edge up to meet the open top edge. e blue field of stars should now be visible facing outward.

4 Bring the striped corner of the bottom folded edge up and over to meet the top edge in a triangular fold.

5 Turn the outer point of the triangle inward to align with the open top edge.

Display Guidelines

• e flag should be displayed in public only from sunrise to sunset, unless it is illuminated during darkness.

• e flag should not be displayed during rain, snow and wind storms, unless it is an all-weather flag not prone to damage.

• On Memorial Day, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon. e flag may also be flown at half-staff to honor a newly deceased federal or state government official by order of the president or governor.

6 Continue this triangular folding pattern along the entire length of the flag.

• When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the blue field should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right (the observer’s le ). e same guidelines apply to a window display: the blue field should appear on the le to observers viewing it from the street.

• e flag should never be displayed upside down, unless to convey distress or great danger.

• Dirty, ripped, wrinkled or frayed flags should not be used. An American flag that is worn or damaged beyond repair should be retired in a respectful manner.

7 If a tail remains, fold it neatly into the remaining open fold.

Disposal Etiquette

Flag Retirement Ceremonies

8 Folding is complete when the flag is in a triangular shape with only the blue field visible.

e U.S. Flag Code states that “ e flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” e American flag is an important and sacred symbol, and flag ceremonies are carried out to dispose of retired flags in a respectful manner. Burning a flag in an undignified manner constitutes desecration.

• Many state and county government offices and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts have flag disposal boxes outside of their buildings. Police stations also o en collect flags for disposal. American Legions, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and other organizations may collect flags as well. Ceremonies are most o en conducted on June 14, Flag Day.

• If a flag ceremony drop-off location is not available, anyone can hold a flag retirement ceremony, provided it is conducted in a respectful and dignified manner. Flags may be ceremoniously folded and burned in compliance with local and state fire codes and ordinances, or folded and buried in a wooden box. Flags made of synthetic materials that could be potentially hazardous if burned may be recycled through flag companies or various organizations. Me and my little brother were fishing on Canandaigua Lake when I lost 2 pretty big pickerel that morning. That afternoon I went to Walmart to grab a bigger net and a few lures. . As I go to checkout the cashier tells me that her reader is down and that this register only does cash, so my whole line goes to other registers and I join a line behind the people that were behind me. As they are almost done checking out there is a big announcement over the intercom saying that all card readers are down and they are only taking cash. I ask if I can just try to tap my debit card to see if it will work but before the cashier can even say anything the couple infront of me checking out says “don’t worry, we’ll pay for it; just make sure to pay it forward.” We are very grateful for their generosity and I can’t wait to pay it forward and catch the next lake record.

Bridge Closure

The bridge in [local town] is still closed. Reconstruction was originally scheduled to begin on April 3, 2023 but didn’t begin until May 15, 2023. It was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 after an 18-month closure. It is still closed and we are assured that it will open in July 2025, but don’t hold your breath on this date. If that date holds true, it will have taken 28 months or 2 years and 4 month to rebuild the bridge. In contrast, it took 1 year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building in 1930. I hope [local town] doesn’t have any more major construction projects because we are getting tired waiting for this project to end.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS

One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone.

Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

FEATURED BUSINESSES

PERRY FARMERS’ MARKET = DOG DATE?

Saturday mornings in Perry aren’t just for produce, local pet lovers often bring their leashed dogs to the farmers’ market. It’s a great chance to socialize your pup, enjoy the fresh air, and pick up a treat or two from local vendors (many of whom bring biscuits just for pets!).

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS

Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Phantom pregnancy in dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll bet you’ve never heard of this one before! My cousin has a female dog who has never been spayed. So she routinely will go into heat. Well, a few months ago, she started behaving funny. She didn’t want to eat, she started pacing the house and then would flop down and not want to go outside, for walks or anything. Even though she wasn’t eating much, she put on weight and her mammaries started to swell. She also started “guarding” her toys and acting aggressive if anyone tried to reach for them. I told my cousin, maybe she’s pregnant, but he insisted that she had never been around a male dog or gone unsupervised outside. He took her to the vet because he thought she was ill. Would you believe, the vet diagnosed her with a “phantom” pregnancy? She had all the signs of being pregnant but there were no puppies. The vet gave her medication for a few weeks, and eventually she got back to her old self. What do you think about that? -- Terry P. in Albany, New York

DEAR TERRY: I have heard of this before! In unspayed females, pseudo-pregnancy, or “phantom pregnancy,” can happen after a heat cycle. It’s uncomfortable for the dog and concerning for the owner.

Treatment includes confirming the absence of a pregnancy, followed by medication to reduce anxiety and stop milk production. Hormone therapy is sometimes needed.

The best way to stop phantom pregnancy from happening again is to spay the dog after all symptoms have subsided, and it’s highly recommended. Spaying will help your cousin’s dog be far more comfortable -- she won’t go through heat cycles any longer -- and have a healthier, longer lifespan, too.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

DID YOU KNOW?

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, andretirementagecanarrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves infinancialstraitsatapointintheir lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solventpeopleshouldbeginsaving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
