The Rt Hon. The Lord Mayor of Bristol 2024 to 2025
"I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be representing our beautiful city of Bristol as Lord Mayor for 2024 to 2025. Coming from a humble background, it is certainly a position I never expected to have.
I was born and raised in Weston-super-Mare in 1968. My father was originally from Bristol and my mother was from Bath, so I have a great affinity towards the West Country and have always enjoyed visiting its historic towns and cities and walking and cycling in the beautiful countryside.
In 1986 I left home to study for a degree in Geography at Plymouth Polytechnic and later a PGCE at Oxford University. Like many young people, I wanted to travel and see the world and so spent several years teaching overseas in Hong Kong and Japan.
I met my partner, Robbie, in 1998 and we spent ten years in Dublin before moving together to Bristol in 2008, settling first in Knowle and then Brislington.
Until recently, I was teaching at an international school in Clifton. I like working in international environments as I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and learning about different cultures. I also love the fact that Bristol is such a great multicultural city, and I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible and celebrating this city's wonderful diversity during my year as Lord Mayor".
We’re again hosting a walk for the Bristol Walkfest, which will take place on Saturday 25th May at 11:00.
We’ll be meeting at the playground on Eastwood Road BS4 4RR and following the red trail of our walking routes.
The commentary will focus on the history of the site and the work The Friends of Eastwood Farm do to maintain the nature reserve. The walk will end at Beeses, so perfect for refreshments after the walk
This month’s meeting will be May 30th at St Cuthbert’s church, Sandy Park Road, 7.30pm.
There will be a short talk about Holymead School, which opened in 1905. We will have a collection of old photos of classes, staff & groups on display from 1920s-1980s, which you can take away for a donation to BCHS. Come along and find yourself!
£5 admission, including raffle ticket & refreshments.

Bellway is staging a community drop-in event at Hungerford Community Centre and Social Club, on Hungerford Road, between 3pm and 7pm on Wednesday, June 5. People will be able to meet the team, find out more and ask any questions.
The developers behind plans to build up to 555 new homes on the edge of Bristol will aim to submit detailed plans this summer. Bellway wants to create a new "environmentally sensitive community of up to 555 homes" on a site next to the Brislington Park and Ride in Bristol.
The fields are between the Brislington Park and Ride and the former Wyevale Garden Centre on the A4 Bath Road in Brislington, right up against the city boundary with Bath and North East Somerset. The housebuilder is proposing a new neighbourhood, off the A4 Bath Road, which would bring sustainable transport links, investment in the local infrastructure and provide around 190 affordable homes, as well as the opportunity for community-led and self-build homes.
8th and 16th June
The Great Big Green Week (GBGW) is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate crisis and protect nature. For the third time, Friend of Eastwood Farm are teaming up with Bricks (St Anne’s House) to put together a local programme to join in. So far we plan a Big Balsam Bash (control of invasive species), the launch of a community climate action plan for our neighbourhood, a gardening workshop, opportunities to chat about green things, and some other events .
Do you know about any green/climate-related events, such as clothes swaps, litter picks, green art projects that happen during or around the dates of the GBGW? Do get in touch with Gaby (gsmeier@btinternet.com), these events could be included in GBGW, and more people will hear about it.

This year we are celebrating our past, present and future! The group is one of the oldest in Bristol and back in the 1960's put on two BBQs for over 20k people in Arnos Vale Park, the event was to fundraise enough money to buy the grounds and build the hut we still use today. This summer we will hosting another (albeit it on a smaller scale) at The Wigwam on Saturday 8th June, alongside all the games and activities for the children we will have a bar, bbq and plan to unveil a plaque thanking individuals for the work they have put into the group since being formed in 1908.
So, if you an exmember, currently involved or just fancy coming along to have an afternoon of fun bag some tickets now!

We are looking for volunteers who can spare an hour of them time to help with the event. Activities include, setting up and taking down the market stall umbrellas and tables, helping run the PA system and performances and distributing flyers on your street ahead of the event
If you are able to help make this free community event a success, please email Brislingtonvillagemarket@gmail.com

Every Sunday we have three short passages from the bible to reflect on. There's usually one from the Old Testament - the Jewish bible as well as Christian; one from the life of the early Church after Jesus; and one from the gospel stories of Jesus' life.
So now we move on into the long summer reaches of Trinity Sundays, beginning this week with Trinity Sunday itself
Christian understanding that God is ‘Tri-unity’ goes back to the earliest days of experiencing God and reflecting on scripture – both Old and New Testaments.
We experience God as Creator, as the foundation of everything; we experience Jesus as the presence of God experiencing our human condition; and we experience God as invisible but essential aspects of our lives – love, joy, peace for example, known as the ‘fruits of the Spirit’
