Holy Week through to Easter Day in Brislington

Next week, known as Holy Week, is the week in which Christians celebrate the heart of their faith and so we are giving prominence in the newsletter to the events that follow the journey of Jesus’ last week on earth, particularly on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

On Thursday evening is the remembrance and re-enacting of Jesus’ Last Supper with his closest friends when he showed what real power – the power of self giving love - is like; and asked us to re-member him in the sharing of bread and wine

On Friday mid-day is the remembrance and taking to heart of Jesus’ death on the cross through which he showed what sacrificing his life for all humanity looks like

On Saturday is a day of absence

On Sunday, Easter Day is the celebration of the Day of Resurrection, beginning with a Sunrise service in Arnos Park. It’s a day of joy when we know that our physical death is not the end of our story, but the beginning of another chapter in it

All are most welcome to learn about and share in the story of this week

We are also highlighting below, the Muslim month of Ramadan and the Jewish festival of Passover all of which overlap and are inter-related at this time of year

Holy Week services across Brislington 2024.

For Muslims, the month of Ramadan has started when there is a special attention to fasting between sunrise and sunset, prayers and acts of charity.

At the end of each day, the fast is ended with a joyful meal, Iftar often celebrated with friends from the wider community – you can ask to be invited.

At the end of the month there is the great festival of Eid on Tuesday 9th April

Passover (Pesach) is celebrated this year from April 22 to April 30 commemorating the anniversary of the Israelite escape from slavery in Egypt as told in the Hebrew (and Christian) bible.

On the first two nights of Jewish people hold a Seder and enjoy a ritual-rich 15-step feast, which centres around telling the story of the Exodus, eating matzah and bitter herbs and singing late into the night.

Passover lasts for 8 days in the Diaspora and begins on Monday 22nd April and ends at nightfall on 30th April

I went for meal with a load of electrictians last night. None of them wanted starters, they just went straight for the mains.

People often ask where they can donate food locally - I am Member Pioneer for Co-op St Anne’s and Broomhill and we have food donation points in both stores. The one in Wyatts View goes to Family Action Food Clubs and the one in Broomhill goes to a food collection at Broomhill Juniors School. Any indate, sealed, nonperishable items gratefully received (no fridge/freezer items).

Thanks!

The Trussell Trust

We know the solution is for our social security system to be fit for purpose. More than 150,000 of us stood together and signed our petition calling for an Essentials Guarantee. Read about the day we handed it in.

British Ukrainian Aid

Turning polluting vehicles into humanitarian aid for Ukraine

In an amazing project between Transport for London and British Ukrainian Aid, London high polluting vehicle owners who scrap their vehicles are entitled to a substantial payment. They can donate their vehicle (and their payment) to charity British Ukrainian Aid who will fill it with humanitarian aid – from medical kits to portable generators – and take the vehicle and the kit to Ukraine for life saving purposes

In Brislington we don’t live in the London Ultra Low Emission Zone, but we can donate to British Ukrainian Aid to fill the vehicles with life saving equipment

This Sunday with the bible

Every Sunday we have three short passages from the bible to reflect on. There's usually one from the Old Testament - the Jewish bible as well as Christian; one from the life of the early church after Jesus; and one from the gospel stories of Jesus' life.

Have a read Here

We are heading rapidly through Lent and have now arrived at Palm Sunday leading us through Holy Week with the sharing of Maundy Thursday, the pain of Good Friday, the emptiness of Saturday and the joy of the Day of Resurrection, Easter Day

Why Palm Sunday? Because we remember and reenact that Jesus entered Jerusalem to the applause and excitement of all around.

It’s a reminder of how they and we misunderstand the nature of revolution. Revolutionary it was and is, but not in the mode of violence and hatreds

Starting to rewild part of St Anne's Church garden

We have begun a rewilding project with our Brownie group. This Sunday we were all given grains of wheat as an illustration for Ian's sermon which spoke of a grain of wheat falling into the ground and dying. After the service we took grains of wheat and scattered them on the prepared ground and surrounding area hoping we will see a harvest later in the year. Hopefully the wild flower seeds that will be sown will also grow.
