Repair Café The October BS4 Repair Cafe will be on Saturday 21st from 10am until 12 noon at St Cuthbert's Church Hall (bottom entrance) on the corner of Wick Road and Sandy Park Road.

What do you have that needs fixing? What don't you use anymore because it's broken. Come on down and see what our amazing volunteers can do for you!

Looking ahead to Remembrancetide The first weeks of November are kept as days of remembrance.

31st October The Eve of All Saints, All Hallows Eve or Hallowe’en Ist November All Saints Day When we bring to mind and give thanks for all those we think of saints – people who have led lives that have been marked by goodness, whom we sometimes call holy.

2nd November (kept on Sundays 29th October at St Peter’s and 5th November at St Christopher’s) All Souls Day When we remember those known to us personally who have died recently on in the past. This is an opportunity to grieve together and to be thankful for lives loved and no longer with us here 5th November Remembrance Sunday The nearest Sunday to Remembrance Day 11th November Remembrance Day These days keep us in remembrance of lives lost particularly in the First and Second World Wars, but also of the all too many wars in the years since 1945. This year we need to include the victims of Russian war of invasion against Ukraine. We also need to remember the victims in Israel and Gaza at the present time.

Sparke Evans Park Bridge We're closing Sparke Evans Park Bridge in a fortnight for up to two years so we can restore this 90-year-old bridge.

Brislington War memorial clean-up

October 28th at 10am It will soon be time for our annual clean-up of the Brislington War Memorial on Bath Road. Everyone is welcome to join us on October 28th at 10am. We plan to spend the morning, pruning any overhanging branches, collecting litter and giving the whole area a sweep. We will then decorate the memorial with hundreds of knitted poppies donated from our local churches. St Christopher’s Church will also be holding a remembrance service at the memorial on Saturday 11 November, commencing at 10:45am. More details in the Remembrancetide articles

Bereavement peer-support group Do you know anybody who would be interested in completing a short free online training course which will guide them through the process of setting up a bereavement peer-support group

in their neighbourhood?

The training encompasses a focus on creating a community peer support group that is sustainable and does not rely on funding. It is based on the successful model of the STAR (Share, Talk and Remember) Bereavement Peer-Support Group in Stockwood Bristol which provides free support for people grieving from a bereavement or difficult transition in their life.

The free course is particularly aimed at local residents who are interested in setting up a bereavement peer-support group in their local neighbourhood Here are the start dates for the STAR Training the Trainers Course, which is delivered via Zoom, and consists of 4 modules each delivered as a 2-hour workshop over a fourweek period. Brislington Conservation and History Society "A CROWN OF FRIENDSHIP“ October 26th 7.30 at St Cuthbert's Crypt, Sandy Park Road.

Entrance £5 for non members Jonathan Rowe tells the story of Bristol First World War poet, Fabian Strachan Woodley ( 1888 - 1957).

Born in Clifton he was a poet, journalist , sportsman and a hero of the First World War, awarded the Military Cross. He was also gay and a Christian.

Some of his work appeared in the very first anthology of male same sex love poetry and prose ever published in the U.S.A in 1924.

QUIS UT DEUS ( "Who Is Like God?" )

Written in the trenches of Loos, June 1917.

This morning as I walked the winding road, Through villages shell - shocked and forlorn, I marked how every dwelling had it's scar, Nor was there one but was battle torn.

Long since the inhabitants had fled away, Only the birds were there that summer morn.

And suddenly I spied at the cross ways A crowned Christ upon a cross of pain, Whose eyes, unfathomable utterly , Looked ever out across a shell scarred plain.

Behind Him rose the shadow of His house, Which men in substance built - and broke again.

Even thus, through every hamlet that I passed It was the same - Christ reigned triumpantly, And men of hate no weapon could devise, To break his cross, or mar his Effigy, But of his goodness He permits them stay To be our Help and Strength eternally.

Baptisms at St Luke’s This Sunday 22nd October, Emily and Sophie will be baptised at St Luke’s during the 10.30 service Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love.

For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents and godparents, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Jesus, making serious promises and declaring the faith.

Annual Bereavement Service Sunday 5th November at 3.00p.m.

We will be remembering those who have died, particularly those who have died in the past few years.

The theme of the service will be thanksgiving to God for their lives and the promise and hope of God’s help in Christ. Where we have been involved in the funeral, the names of those who have died from the parish in the past year will be read out during the service and there will also be an opportunity for anyone to remember those whom they have loved and lost.

We do hope that you can come on Sunday 5th November at 3.00pm. and that you will find it a comfort at this time. After the service coffee or tea will be served in church and you are warmly invited to stay. For any who wish, there will be the opportunity too for someone to pray with you more personally.

We welcome you with love and Christ’s peace to you, from all at St Luke’s Church.

Operation Christmas Child This is a Christian organisation that not only gives shoeboxes to children with very little. Giving boxes like these is often a way into remote communities where there is very little contact.

For £20 per box you can fill a box on line from various choices and for a boy or girl in the age group of your choosing.

You can then donate the gift as part of St Luke's group by selecting 'group' and putting St Luke's Brislington in the name box.

We are aiming to get 20 boxes donated on line.

You are also most welcome to collect a box from St Luke's church on Sunday mornings and make up your own or if you are unable to give so much any cash donations can be made via Rosemary Spada and she will use the funds to make up more boxes on line.
