"A CROWN OF FRIENDSHIP“

October 26th 7.30 at St Cuthbert's Crypt, Sandy Park Road. Entrance £5 for non members

Jonathan Rowe tells the story of Bristol First World War poet, Fabian Strachan Woodley ( 1888 - 1957).

Born in Clifton he was a poet, journalist , sportsman and a hero of the First World War, awarded the Military Cross. He was also gay and a Christian.

Some of his work appeared in the very first anthology of male same sex love poetry and prose ever published in the U.S.A in 1924.

QUISUTDEUS ( "Who Is Like God?" )

Written in the trenches of Loos, June 1917. This morning as I walked the winding road, Through villages shell - shocked and forlorn, I marked how every dwelling had it's scar, Nor was there one but was battle torn. Long since the inhabitants had fled away, Only the birds were there that summer morn.

And suddenly I spied at the cross ways

A crowned Christ upon a cross of pain, Whose eyes, unfathomable utterly , Looked ever out across a shell scarred plain. Behind Him rose the shadow of His house, Which men in substance built - and broke again.

Even thus, through every hamlet that I passed It was the same - Christ reigned triumpantly, And men of hate no weapon could devise, To break his cross, or mar his Effigy, But of his goodness He permits them stay To be our Help and Strength eternally.

Thank You

We would like to say a big Thankyou to all the Guides, Brownies, Parents ,bakers, and helpers, and especially to everyone who supported us.

We raised an amazing £262.08 for the Unicornfest Luekaemia Care charity, which is absolutely brilliant!

Thankyou everyone!

Petition on Brislington Buses

Cllr Tim Rippington (Brislington East), Cllr Katja

Hornchen (Brislington East), David Jepson (Campaigner, Brislington West)

Since 2019 Brislington has lost its services from Tesco and Callington Road Hospital, Hungerford Road and Wick Road to St Anne's. The St Anne's area itself has no bus service linking it with the A4 corridor and Bristol Temple Meads.

We are asking WECA to fund an expansion of both the No 1 and No 36 services, to better service the area and give people real public transport opportunities. We call for the following:

1) Increase the frequency of the No 1 to at least every 10 minutes and modify every second journey to be a 1A serving St Anne's instead of Broomhill.

2) Re-instate the 36 service beyond St Anne's to serve Wick Road, Hungerford Road and Tesco Brislington.

If you support our campaign to improve Brislington's bus services, please sign up Here and we will present this petition to WECA at its meeting on 6th October.

Marmalade Trust Christmas Cheer

Christmas time usually conjures up joyful images of family and friends celebrating, exchanging gifts, excited chatter and delicious food. For some people, however, it can be a dreaded, sad and lonely time. Marmalade Trust understands how difficult Christmas can be for someone who is struggling with loneliness. We don’t want anyone to spend Christmas Day alone if they don’t want to, so we invite them to join us for a free festive lunch on the big day, or a doorstep visit. Members are those who feel particularly lonely and isolated this year, for example, a person of an older age who may have no family or friends around.

St Anne's House

We are seeking compassionate volunteers to help local over 75s by driving them to a heartwarming and FREE Boccia group every month. Boccia is a chance to bond, share laughter, and create cherished memories together.

Drivers will play a key role in getting the guests to and from the group. They also get to stay for the game, tea and chat!

The best part? You only need to commit a few hours of your time each month, probably on a Thursday! This small act of kindness will have an immeasurable impact on our community.

Please reach out to us if you're interested in giving some time to this fantastic local project and opportunity to make friends, support your community and meet new people in the process.

As a volunteer driver you will be picking up one to two activity guests from their homes so they can attend our monthly activity-based groups. These outings are the highlight for many of our activity guests and, for some, it is the only time they leave their house for a social occasion. You will be required to complete a DBS check for this role, for which Reengage will cover the cost. Tasks include:

● Driving one to two activity guests, using your own car, to the venue and returning them home again after the activity.

● Staying at the group to help with activities, conversation and serving refreshments.

● Liaising with the group coordinator to confirm which activity guests you will pick up.

● Keeping the group coordinator informed of any concerns or issues you might have.

Please contact 07709 264 201 and leave a message or email Ellie from

Beyond Brislington

Who said this?

It may be a surprise!

“Despite all attempts to deny, conceal, gloss over or relativize the issue, the signs of climate change are here and increasingly evident. No one can ignore the fact that in recent years we have witnessed extreme weather phenomena, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought and other cries of protest on the part of the earth that are only a few palpable expressions of a silent disease that affects everyone”

This Sunday with the bible

Every Sunday we have three short passages from the bible to reflect on. There's usually one from the Old Testament - the Jewish bible as well as Christian; one from the life of the early church after Jesus; and one from the gospel stories of Jesus' life.

Have a read Here

In this Sunday’s bible passages, there’s a severe warning about what might happen if we abuse the gifts we have been given.

-

-

We are abusing the gift of God’s beautiful creation

We are abusing God’s gifts of peace

We are abusing relationships between people Here’s the warning:

-

‘ThereforeItellyou,thekingdomofGodwillbe takenawayfromyouandgiventoapeoplethat producesthefruitsofthekingdom’.

Do One Thing for ASD 2023

ASD=Anti-Slavery Day

Anti-Slavery Day is an annual opportunity for churches, businesses, charities, and individuals to consider afresh what they can do to eliminate modern slavery in their communities.

However, when we hear the numbers of people trapped in slavery in the UK and beyond, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless.

That’s why we've launched our “Do One Thing” campaign to coincide with Anti Slavery Day this October!

Any action, no matter how small, could change or save the life of somebody in desperate circumstances. What's more, small steps can lead to more significant changes and working towards slavery-free communities is not something we can do on our own or overnight.

Here’s what some are doing

It could be as simple as signing up for a modern slavery seminar to learn more about the issue, putting up helpline posters around your church buildings, or downloading the Safe Car Wash App and using it whenever you go to a hand car wash.

So, this month, please:

• think about one step you can take

to fight modern slavery

• film yourself or your church describing your pledge, upload to your socials and tag The Clewer Initiative. Use the hashtags #DOT4ASD #AntiSlaveryDay

look out for our short films on your socials and please share them widely! We need to inspire more people!

Operation Christmas Child

This is a Christian organisation that not only gives shoeboxes to children with very little. Giving boxes like these is often a way into remote communities where there is very little contact.

For £20 per box you can fill a box on line from various choices and for a boy or girl in the age group of your choosing.

You can then donate the gift as part of St Luke's group by selecting 'group' and putting St Luke's Brislington in the name box.

We are aiming to get 20 boxes donated on line.

You are also most welcome to collect a box from St Luke's church on Sunday mornings and make up your own or if you are unable to give so much any cash donations can be made via Rosemary Spada and she will use the funds to make up more boxes on line.

Thank you for any support you can give. More Information Here
